MHERST, Mass. - Ahmad Nivins poured in 31 points and 12 rebounds to lead Saint Joseph's highest scoring output of the season, as UMass (11-4, 0-1 A-10) fell to the Hawks (8-4, 1-0), 98-92, in Wednesday night's Atlantic 10 basketball game at the Mullins Center. The loss ended a 15-game home winning streak for the Minutemen and was their first conference loss at home since 2005-06. Ricky Harris led the UMass offense with 25 points and four 3-pointers, while Gary Forbes added 22 points and hit five 3-pointers. Etienne Brower chipped in with 14 points and Dante Milligan grabbed 10 rebounds. Pat Calathes added 21 points and 15 boards for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's shot 58.5% (38-65) for the game, while UMass shot 42.7% (32-75) from the field. The Minutemen were 13-33 (39.4%) from 3-point range and the Hawks were 6-14 (42.9%).
UMass started slow, missing six of its first nine shots to fall behind, 12-7, but quickly heated up, scoring on six of seven possessions to take a 23-20 lead with 10:40 left in the opening half. It was a back and forth for the rest of the half as the offenses took over. The teams traded leads seven times and were tied five times until the Hawks outscored the Minutemen, 15-5, over the final 3:48 of the half to take a 52-44 lead into the locker room.
Harris led the Minutemen with 14 first half points with the help of three 3-pointers. Forbes added eight points and hit two from long range. Nivins led all scorers with 20 points on 8-for-10 shooting for the Hawks in the opening 20 minutes. UMass shot 50% (15-30) from the field and from 3-point range (8-16), while Saint Joseph's shot a blistering 66.7% (22-33) in the first half. The Hawks held the advantage on the boards as well, 18-9.
The Hawks started the second half by outscoring UMass, 19-10, over the first 4:57 to put the Minutemen down by 17, 71-54. UMass then used an 8-0 run, consisting of a Matt Glass 3-pointer, a Forbes 3-point play, and Harris layup, to reduce the deficit to nine, 71-62, with 12:42 left. Etienne Brower made all three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt to pull UMass within six, 83-77, with 5:24 left. The Hawks responded with a 10-4 spurt over the next 3:36, to take a 12-point lead with 1:36 remaining and secure the win.
The Minutemen return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 16 when they travel to Dayton to take on the 17th-ranked Flyers (13-1) in a 7 p.m. tip.
NOTES
UMass' home win streak of 15 games ended with the loss. The Minutemen's last loss came on Jan. 2, 2007 against Miami, 72, UMass 71. UMass is now 28-5 in its last 33 games overall.
It was UMass' first conference loss in 10 games since a 72-71 loss to Charlotte on Feb. 22, 2006.
A game after having three players with 20 points, UMass had two against Saint Joseph's as leading scorer Gary Forbes continued his streak with his 19th game in a row including all 15 this season with 22. Forbes scored more than 20 points for the 10th time this season and 19th time in his career.
Ricky Harris broke in double-figures for the 15th game in a row this season with 25 including 14 in the first half. Harris tied his career high of 25 for the fourth time this season. He had 25 at Syracuse, at Boston College and at No. 15 Vanderbilt.
Dante Milligan had his second career game with double-figure rebounds with 10.
Etienne Brower made his first 3-pointer, with 6:29 left in the first half, in six games after missing 21 in a row dating back to Dec. 15.

Travis Ford on the game
Saint Joe's is a terrific team. They look like a team who had ten days to prepare for us. They had terrific execution. The first half was very frustrating for us. St. Joe's made some great shots. We were not very competitive and we need to get tougher. In this league, if you are not ready, then you are left behind and they did not show their competitive nature tonight.
Coach Ford on preparation
We could not see this coming tonight. I thought we would respond better. St. Joseph's is a much tougher and more physical team; especially on the inside. We played pretty tonight, while they played hard. We were out-rebounded by 15, and we gave up 21 points and 15 rebounds to their third best player.
Coach Ford on Nivens
He is tougher than all of the players we have on the inside. We need to be more physical. He man-handled us. If he did not get tired in the end, he could have scored 40 points. We let him do what he wanted.
Coach Ford on the defensive switch at halftime
We changed our defense to trapping later, but it was really the second shots that killed us. Every time we would get back in the game, they would come up with a huge second shot. When something is on the line, things need to switch. Luckily, it is not too late in the season for a change to happen. This league is a physical and an aggressive league, and tonight we were on the soft-side.
Ricky Harris on what went wrong
We dug ourselves into a hole and we were sluggish. In Atlantic-10 play, you need to bring your best game. We need to learn from this, and in practice tomorrow, we will try to learn from all of our mistakes. It is tough playing from behind for the whole game, but we need to learn to bounce back.
Phil Martelli on the game
I was so impressed with watching the speed and the freewheeling kind of plays that UMass made. We wanted to make a concentrated effort. Lowe is the guy that makes them go and to hold him to 8 pts was terrific. I said to Travis that what they have done and the way that they retooled them selves. We wanted to take speed out of the game but we were unable to do that. We played some zone. We still have work to do in terms of completion of the game and playing it all the way out. When we have Ahmad [Nivins] going like that I think that we are going to be hard to guard.
Coach Martelli on playing tough teams
I think we are who we are 7-4. We have had a chance against teams and lost when other teams have gone and done it. I am delighted for games like this. I put on our board tonight that we want to earn ours. Not let anyone give it to us. Tonight we lined up against one of the top teams in the league and we came out with a win.
