MHERST, Mass. - Behind a 24-point effort by Ricky Harris, UMass (13-4, 2-1 A-10) defeated Charlotte (11-6, 2-1 A-10), 86-79, on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center. With the win, UMass knocked off the final unbeaten team in the Atlantic 10 and moves into a tie with several teams atop the balanced conference standings. Etienne Brower logged his third career double-double and first at UMass with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Gary Forbes and Dante Milligan each added 15 points, while the Minutemen made a season-high 29 free throws. The game featured a total of 13 lead changes and nine ties.
For the game, the Minutemen shot 46.9% (23-49), including 42.3% (11-26) from 3-point range, while 49ers shot 36.2% (25-69) and 34.5% (10-29) from behind the arc. UMass held the edge on the boards, 41-39, and blocked 12 shots, led by Tony Gaffney's five.
The Minutemen got off to a slow start, missing eight of their first ten shots and falling behind, 14-8, six minutes into the game. A Harris steal and layup preceded Luke Bonner taking a charge and then hitting a 3-pointer at the other end to jumpstart UMass. With the scored knotted at 18 at the 11:35 mark, UMass went on a 15-0 run over the next 3:03 to take a 30-18 lead. The 49ers came back with a run of their own, 11-0 over a 1:01 span, to take the lead, 36-35, with 3:17 left in the half. UMass outscored Charlotte, 6-2, in that time to take a 41-38 lead into halftime. Leemire Goldwire led the 49ers with 25 points and was 5-for-16 from 3-point range.
Brower led UMass with nine first half points, while the Minutemen outshot the 49ers, 48.4% (15-31) to 37.8% (14-37). Milligan grabbed seven boards to lead UMass to a 22-21 edge in rebounding in the first 20 minutes. Goldwire paced Charlotte with 11 points.
The 49ers used a 9-0 run early in the second half to take the lead back, 50-45, with 16:33 to go. Harris and Forbes then combined to outscore Charlotte, 14-5, over a 3:25 stretch to give UMass a 59-55 lead with 12:56 to go.
The teams would then slug it out, exchanging the lead six more times. Milligan scored seven-straight UMass points, five of them coming at the foul line, to give the Minutemen the lead for good, 74-72, at the 4:54 mark. Goldwire pulled the 49ers within three, 80-77, with 42 seconds left, but Milligan, Harris, and Gary Correia, who hadn't shot a free throw in 14 games, combined to make six free throws in the waning seconds to ice the UMass victory.
The Minutemen return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Philadelphia to take on Saint Joseph's at 6 p.m. The game will be televised live on CN8.
NOTES
UMass moved to 13-4 for the second year in a row to equal its best start the 1995-96 season when UMass began the season 26-0.
Ricky Harris continues to score in double-figures in every game as he netted 24. Harris had his 10th game with 20 or more points this season and fourth in a row. He is averaging 24.0 points over the last four games.
Coming off the bench for the second game in a row, Etienne Brower scored in double-figures in as many games with 14. It was his 11th game with 10 or more points this season and 25th of his career.
Brower connected on 3-of-5 from 3-point range giving him 6-of-10 in the last two games after making just 4-of-37 spanning nine games.
Brower tied his career-high with 10 rebounds, for the fifth time in his career. It was his first double-double at UMass and third of his career with two coming at BU.
Dante Milligan started for the second game in a row and scored in double-figures for the second game in a row as he finished with 15. He set a career-high with 11 made free throws. He also attempted a career-best 14.
Milligan played a career-high 27 minutes and had a career-high four assists. His most minutes previously was 25 vs. Yale this season. He had handed out three assists two games ago vs. Saint Joseph's.
Freshman Gary Correia made his first two free throws in 14 games to seal the win with 35 seconds remaining.
Gary Forbes scored in double-figures for the 21st game in a row including all 17 this season with 15.
Luke Bonner drew two charges to give him 12 on the season. Dante Milligan also drew a charge in the first half, his first this year.
Sedale Jones saw playing time for the third time this season, playing three minutes in the first half as a defensive stopper.

Coach Travis Ford's general comments
I don't say it a lot, but I was proud of my team tonight. It was not a pretty game, but I liked that. I like how we had to fight to win that game--how we had to grind it out at the end. We had to win a game the way we haven't had to win a game in awhile. Usually, we win games by outscoring people, but tonight, although we scored a lot of points, I thought both teams really fought. I was very impressed with Charlotte's team--led by a great player. I can't say we played pretty or great, but we played every possession and we did not let little things bother us, which we have the tendency to do. I thought that was a well-earned victory.
Coach Ford on Dante Milligan's performance
Milligan was huge in this game. I had to take him out in the first half, and let him have it pretty good. He didn't like that, but I sat him down on the bench. Sometimes, you have to upset Dante to get him going. He is such a nice guy. I never thought, though, that I would be leaving him in for free throws. Usually, I sub him out, but tonight I left him in because he was one of the only guys making free throws.
Etienne Brower on credibility in the Atlantic 10
We got picked 8th in the conference, but we knew that we had a lot more than that to give, and we wanted to prove that to the A-10 and the teams we faced. I'm glad that our team is playing as well as we're playing right now. If we can keep it up, I think a lot of people will start looking at us the way that they look at Xavier, Dayton and URI. They will start to give us some respect, and I think we have earned that respect. Hopefully, with some more wins--like this and like at Dayton--we can get ourselves on the map.
Gary Correia on pressure free throws
It was definitely nerve-racking. We shoot free-throws all the time at practice, but in a game, it's a different situation. I knew the game was on the line, so I composed myself and put them in. After I made them, it felt great.
Dante Milligan on quality free throw shooting
The past two weeks, I have been practicing free throws with Matt Glass after practice. I give a lot of my credit to him because he stays with me for 300-400 makes and helps me with my follow-through and concentration. It doesn't matter that he is a freshman; I'll take advice from whoever will give it to me. He has definitely helped me stay focused and reach my potential.
Milligan on defensive changes
We knew that Charlotte's main offensive focus was Leemire Goldwire, so we tried to limit his shots and his looks at the basket. He is the primary shooter on their team. The other guys don't shoot as well as he does. We tried to limit not only his threes, but his overall touches.
Brower on turnout of game
It was nice to see people come out, but we need to see more people in the stands. We need to get people in the seats! Our style of play is a lot of fun. Most of the time, we score a lot of points, and I don't know what crowd would not want to see that. We are happy that they came out, but we need them to come out more. At the end of the game, when we are putting our hands up--we feed off that energy. We played really well at Syracuse and Boston College because we feed off their crowds of 10,00-20,000 people, even though its negative energy. We don't have a lot of energy in the crowds a lot of times this season. So I think, if more people start coming, we'll probably start winning more games.
