ICHMOND, Va. - Tremendous 3-point shooting by Etienne Brower and Ricky Harris lifted UMass to its first-ever win at Richmond on Saturday night, 78-74. The pair combined to make 10-of-13 from beyond the arc as Harris led all scorers with 24 points and Brower netted 17 as UMass won its fourth game in a row. The Minutemen (19-9 overall) are now just one-half game out of second place in the Atlantic 10 with an 8-6 conference mark. Both Saint Joseph's and Temple, who play each other on Sunday at 8-5.
Eight times in the game's final eight minutes, Richmond cut UMass' lead to just four points, but was never able to come any closer after the Minutemen opened a lead as large as 10 early in the second half as Brower made four 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes.
Gary Forbes, playing his first game back in the state of Virginia, where he began his college career at the University of Virginia, made four free throws late to finish with 17.
Richmond cut the UMass lead to four points for the fifth time in the final eight minutes on a David Gonzalvez lay-up to make it 68-64 with 47 seconds left. Brower made both parts of a one-and-one to give UMass the 70-64 advantage with 38.7 seconds left.
Brower gave UMass a nine-point lead at 68-59 on his fourth 3-pointer of the second half with 4:25 left in the second half. Richmond continued to fight back and reduced the lead to one yet again at 68-64 with 3:10 on five straight points by Kevin Anderson.
UMass continued to lead throughout the second half after Brower's early onslaught, Richmond cut the lead to four at 58-54 on a 3-pointer by Anderson with 8:09 left in the second half. But UMass answered as Chris Lowe had a follow-up jumper in the paint to extend the lead back to 60-54 with 7:30 left in the game.
After just three points in the first half, Brower came out on fire in the second half. He nailed consecutive 3-pointers to give UMass a 45-37 lead, just 1:49 into the half and forcing Richmond coach Chris Mooney to call a timeout.
Harris was sharp in the first half making 7-of-9 from the floor including four 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 18 points as UMass held a 39-37 lead at intermission. Richmond scored on the final play of the half on a reverse lay-up by Oumar Sylla. The game was tied six times in the first half.
UMass took their first lead of the game at 16-14 with their own 8-0 run capped by a Harris fastbreak layup with 12:20 left.
The Spiders made their first five shots from the floor to lead 14-8. Richmond jumped out to an 8-0 as Gonzalvez hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first 2:17.
The Minutemen return to the Mullins Center to host La Salle, in the regular-season home finale on Wednesday, March 5. UMass will honor seniors Etienne Brower, Gary Forbes, Dante Milligan, Nana Ampim and Matt Pennie prior to the 7:30 p.m. game.
NOTES
UMass won at Richmond for the first time in history with a 78-74 win. The Minutemen were previously 0-3.
The Minutemen are now on a four-game win streak the longest since a six-game win streak at the end of December and early January.
Forbes continued to score in double-figures in every game this season with 17. He has scored 10 or more in 32 games in a row dating to last season.
Ricky Harris reached double-figures for the 25th time in 28 games this season with 24. He had 10 in the game's first 8:40 and 18 in the first half alone, making four 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes.
For Harris, it was his 13th game with 20 or more points and first in more than a month when he had 21 at Duquesne on Jan. 30.
Etienne Brower scored in double-figures for the ninth time in 10 games with 17. It was his 20th game this season with 10 or more points.
Matt Glass had a career-high in rebounds with seven with all seven in the first half. His previous high was four.
UMass made 10 or more 3-pointers for the 11th time this season. The 10-of-19 for 52.6 percent was the second-best of the year. Only the Northern Illinois game (53.8) was better back on Nov. 10.
