UMass Secures No. 3 Seed With 67-63 Win At GW
Minutemen set to play winner of Charlotte-Rhode Island on Thursday

ASHINGTON, D.C. - UMass claimed the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, but not before an excruciating end in a 67-63 win at George Washington on Saturday night. The Minutemen and Colonials exchanged the lead 11 times in the second half. Senior Gary Forbes scored 20 points to finish in a tie with Temple's Dionte Christmas for the regular-season A-10 scoring title (20.3 points per game). Ricky Harris also scored 20 points as he made five 3-pointers. Etienne Brower posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Minutemen finish the regular-season 21-9 and riding a six-game winning streak into the Atlantic 10 Tournament. At 10-6, UMass is the No. 3 seed, outright and will play the winner of the No. 6 Charlotte-No. 11 Rhode Island game, which will be played on Wednesday at 9 p.m. UMass will play on Thursday at 9 p.m. The game will be televised by CN8 in the New England area.
Colonial Noel Wilmore missed a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left and Johnny Lee fell out of out of bounds with the rebound to give UMass back the ball with 9.6 seconds remaining.
Forbes made 1-of-2 free throws with 23.5 left for a 66-63 edge. Hollis brought GW back to within two at 65-63 on a lay-up with 28 seconds.
Brower's free throws with 44.1 seconds gave UMass a two-possession lead, 65-61. That came after GW missed two lay-ups on the same possession.
Chris Lowe made a huge steal with 1:23 left in the game to give UMass back the ball, but UMass could not score.
Forbes made 1-of-2 free throws with 1:35 left to make it 63-61. Forbes' hard lay-up gave UMass a 62-61 lead with 3:30 left in the game. Brower and Hollis matched 3-pointers to keep the game deadlocked at 60-60 with 4:51 left in the second.
UMass took a 57-51 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Harris with 7:51 left in the second. Harris tied his career-best for treys in a game (5) with the second of the duo.
GW took a 46-40 lead on a bank shot by Hollis with 12:43 left in the game. Harris quickly answered with a 3-pointer to cut the lead back to 46-43.
UMass missed six of its first seven shots of the second half as GW took a 39-36 lead on a pair of free throws by Xavier Alexander with 16:57 left in the second.
It was bombs away in the first half for UMass as the Minutemen made 8-of-17 from beyond the 3-point arc to lead 33-31 at intermission. Forbes led all scorers with 14. GW's leading scorer Rob Diggs was held scoreless in the half.
GW tied the game at 31-31 on Cheyenne Moore's trey with 1:06, but Harris' lay-up gave the Minutemen back the lead at 33-31.
UMass hit three 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to retake a lead at 31-24 with 4:15 left in the half as Forbes hit his fourth trey of the first half.
Forbes tied the game at 20-20 on a runner in the paint and Brower's free throws with 5:57 left in the half regained the lead at 22-20.
The Colonials took their first lead of the game at 20-18 on a fastbreak lay-up by Hollis with 7:03 left in the first, which built the spurt to 12-0 as UMass did not score for more than four minutes.
George Washington rallied with a 10-0 run including a pair of 3-pointers by Noel Wilmore to tie the game for the first time at 18-18 with 7:30 left in the first, causing Travis Ford to call a timeout.
UMass came out bombing from 3-point range connecting on 5-of-7 to start the game. Brower's 3-pointer with 10:30 left in the first half, gave UMass an 18-8 lead. Matt Glass' trey with 12:50 left in the first half gave the Minutemen a 14-6 lead. Forbes had previously hit consecutive 3-pointers.
NOTES
UMass secured the No. 3 seed with a win at GW on Saturday. The last time UMass was a No. 3 seed was in 2000, when the Minutemen were No. 3 in the East and advanced to the Atlantic 10 Semfinals before losing to Temple, 66-65.
With 21 wins, UMass now has tied for the eighth-most wins in a season. They also won 21 in 1973-74, 1975-76, 1997-98.
Gary Forbes finished as the Atlantic 10 co-regular-season scoring champion with Temple's Dionte Christmas. Both players finished with 610 points in 30 games for a 20.3 average.
Forbes continued to score in double-figures each game this season with 20 points. He had scored 20 or more in 34 games in a row dating to last season.
Forbes has scored 20 or more in 18 of 30 games.
With 20 points vs. GW, Forbes now has 1040 at UMass, moving to 34th all-time. He passed Tim Edwards (1022), Derrick Claiborne (1033), David Brown (1037). Next at No. 33 is Charlton Clarke with 1041. Forbes has done it in two seasons and just 63 games. Forbes has 1551 in his career including 511 at Virginia. That total would rank eighth all-time at UMass.
Ricky Harris had his 27th game with double-figures as he scored 20 points. Harris has 15 games with 20 or more this season, the first 15 of his career. Harris has score 20 or more in three games in a row.
Harris tied his career-high with five 3-pointers for the third game in a row. He has made 15-of-28 over the last three games.
Harris has 82 3-pointers this season to tie Anthony Anderson for the seventh-best single-season in UMass history. His 225 attempts ranks sixth-most in a single-season.
Etienne Brower had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. It was his third double-double this season and 22nd time with 10 or more points. He has done that in 11 of the last 12 games.
Chris Lowe had seven assists to give him 174 for the season. That ties him for the fifth-best single-season with Alex Eldridge in 1977-78. On Saturday, he passed Rick Pitino (168 in 1973-74).
Lowe had 445 career assists to stand just eight shy of Derek Kellogg (453) in a career.

Opening statement
"I'm just glad to get out of here with a win. George Washington's always an extremely tough team to play. Watching film, I do think they've been playing their best basketball. I think they showed a lot of heart tonight with some things they've gone through the last couple of days. I thought they came out and played extremely hard. This is a team that's going to be tough to deal with in the future." "We came up with some key rebounds late in the game, and a couple of steals that were key. But other than that, it was pretty much an even basketball game most of the night."
You have to be happy about 3-point shooting, but you can't depend on it game after game.
"No. We knew tonight that we were going to have to depend on it. We knew we would shoot an extraordinary amount tonight, the way GW plays defense. They do a good job of clogging things up inside when you drive or throw it inside. We wanted to find our shooters on the perimeter. It wasn't a surprise, because we don't have a dominant inside game. We made just enough. You look at our other percentages--Wow, we didn't make many around the basket. GW does a great job trying to block shots. They're long and athletic, and they cause you problems around the basket. We were trying to avoid that as much as possible."
Are you ready for post-season?
"Yes...I can't say we played great tonight, but I think that was a product of George Washington. It was a product of them playing hard, and out to prove something. We're just glad to get a win...To go 10-6 in this league with the start we had to endure as far as our teams--I was very concerned as we started league play, hoping we had something left. I think we had the toughest schedule of anybody starting out."
What did you do to control Rob Diggs?
"We talked about him a whole lot over the last couple of days. He's one of the better low-post scorers in our league...He's a guy who can affect the game in a lot of ways--shot blocking, offensive rebounding, scoring. Our job was to make sure we always got position on him; don't let him get position on you...I thought we did a pretty good job of that most of the night."
How would you sum up GW's season, and their prospects for next year?
"Karl's done a tremendous job. When you lose your point guard--Travis King--and move Maureece Rice to that position, that's like us putting Ricky Harris at the point guard spot. But they didn't have a choice, really. They probably didn't think Johnny Lee was ready, and I'd 100-percent agree. They probably didn't have faith in a walk-on and try everything they could to piece it together. I've been in that situation before...They are a relatively a young basketball team. I think Johnny Lee has made a difference down the stretch. That's one reason they've been successful, and he's a nice addition to the team. But it's not easy losing your point guard on a young basketball team."
