No. 6 Charlotte Stuns No. 3 UMass In A 69-65 Upset
UMass lost an 18-point halftime lead, to fall by four to the 49ers

TLANTIC CITY, N.J. - After blowing an 18-point lead early in the second half, UMass rallied back but Leemire Goldwire's 3-point show in the final minutes gave Charlotte a 69-65 win, stunning the Minutemen. Gary Forbes and Etienne Brower led the Minutemen in scoring tallying 14 points each. Leemire Goldwire led the Niners with 24 points and Lamont Mack followed close behind with 23 (5-8 from the 3-point line, all in the second half). Charlie Coley led Charlotte with 17 rebounds as the Niners out-rebounded the Minutemen 52 to 29 (25 to 11 in the second half).
The Minutemen tied their school record for 3-pointers made in an Atlantic 10 Tournament game, making 10-of-22.
Goldwire sealed the win with a 30-foot 3-pointer with 17 seconds left in the game for the final of 69-65.
Chris Lowe missed a free throw with 48.7 seconds left which would have tied the game.
Goldwire hit a 3-pointer to give Charlotte a one point lead at 66-65 with 57 seconds left in regulation. Coley's fastbreak lay-up with 1:55 left in the second tied the game at 63-63 after Mack's 27-foot 3-pointer with 2:34 left brought the 49ers back to within two at 63-61.
UMass kept Charlotte from registering a field goal for more than six minutes as the 49ers missed six shots and turned the ball over four times late in the second half. Goldwire's 3-pointer with 3:17 left in the second half, cut the UMass lead to 62-58.
Forbes gave UMass a nine-point edge at 4:59 with another driving lay-up to make it 62-53, forcing Bobby Lutz to call his fourth timeout.
Forbes' fastbreak lay-up with 9:18 recaptured the lead for UMass at 51-50. Then Lowe hit back-to-back fastbreak lay-ups to re-up the UMass lead to five at 55-50 with 8:04 left in the second. That sealed an 8-0 run by UMass.
Goldwire's 3-pointer with 11:55 left in the second half cut the lead to two at 47-45, then Goldwire proceeded to give Charlotte its first lead since it was 5-4 on his second straight trey and a 48-47 Charlotte lead with 11:23 left.
Charlotte cut into UMass' lead early in the second half as the 49ers made 7-of-15 to begin the second half to make the deficit just seven at 45-38 on a Mack 3-pointer with 14:21 left in the second half. Mack scored 13 of Charlotte's points in a 19-9 run.
UMass made six straight baskets that were from 3-point range in the first and held Charlotte to just 22.9 percent from the floor in building a 36-19 halftime edge. Overall in the half, UMass made seven treys. Brower led all scorers with 14 points including four 3-pointers.
A fastbreak lay-up by Brower with 2:50 left in the half, gave UMass its largest advantage of the period at 31-17.
Brower made UMass' sixth 3-pointer in a row with 7:10 left in the first half for a 23-15 lead.
UMass went on a 15-2 run in the middle of the first half. Brower hit UMass' fifth 3-pointer in a row to extend the lead to 20-9 with 8:20 left in the first and causing Lutz to call a timeout. A sensational passing sequence off a steal by Harris gave UMass a 17-9 lead as Gary Correia nailed UMass' fourth 3-pointer in a row with 10:49 left in the first. Three consecutive 3-pointers by Brower, Matt Glass and Forbes gave UMass a 14-7 lead with 12:46 left in the first half.
NOTES
- UMass tied a school record in Atlantic 10 Tournament games with 10 3-pointers. UMass had previously made 10 against Temple in 1996 and George Washington in 2002.
- Gary Forbes scored in double-figures for the 35th consecutive time including every game this season (31) with 14 points.
- Etienne Brower scored in double-figures for the 12th time in 13 games with 14 all scored in the first half.
- Chris Lowe had double-figures for the 18th time this season with 12.
- UMass made six consecutive 3-pointers midway through the first half with Brower hitting three with five coming in the 15-2 run.
- UMass, which is third in the nation in blocks, had at least 10 blocks for the ninth time this season with 11.

What concerned him at halftime, despite holding a 17-point lead:
"What worried me at halftime was the rebounding. Even though we were up 17, they annihilated us in the first half on rebounding. They continued to exploit our post play inside as far as rebounding is concerned. That wasn't good."
Regarding his team's postseason chances:
"We finished third in this league and we've won six out of our last seven games. We've won a lot of road games this year. A lot of things they look for, we've done so we hope we get in. I think we have a team that could make some noise if we got in there. The way I see it, I think we've done a lot to deserve a chance to get in there."
On his team's attempts to contain Leemire Goldwire:
"When Leemire Goldwire gets hot there's not a whole lot you can do about it. We were in his face and he made some good shots. But the threes didn't beat us, our rebounding killed us and free throw shooting, those are the difference in the basketball game, plain and simple."
What he told his team before the final defensive series:
"All we were talking about was don't give up threes, I knew that's all they were going to shoot, they weren't going to shoot anything else but threes. And they were going to let two guys shoot, (Leemire) Goldwire and (Lamont) Mack."

"This loss hurts. It's disappointing that we had such a good start and came out with a lot of energy. Then they started hitting shots and our defense started lagging a little bit. The rebounds really got to us, I think there are a lot of stats that they outworked us in, some categories they just did a lot better in."
Regarding his team's postseason chances:
"Guys talk about it all the time, I nevery try not to get caught up into it because I'm not a Bracketologist, I don't know how that works. Hopefully we get in, obviously everybody is praying for that but we needed this win. We needed a couple of wins to secure it. So we just have to wait a couple of days and see what happens."
