MHERST - In the 33rd game of the season, the question still lingers: Can the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team follow one good performance with another?
After routing La Salle 100-63 in the final game of the regular season, the Minutemen played poorly against Charlotte in the Atlantic 10 Tournament in a 69-65 loss that may have cost them a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
So after crushing Stephen F. Austin 80-60 in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament, the Minutemen (22-10) will try to put to rest the questions about their ability to put two good games together at noon Saturday against Akron (24-10) in the Mullins Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
"At this point there's nothing to lose and everything to gain. We're just trying to play and keep playing basketball and keep having fun," senior Etienne Brower said. "We're going to try to win the whole thing if we can.
"We're just trying to enjoy our spring break as basketball players instead of going to Cancun or something," he added.
UMass coach Travis Ford said he is not worried about his team either.
"That doesn't concern me anymore. The regular season is a little different," he said. "If we win or lose Saturday it won't be because we won by 20 last game. I'm concerned about Akron.
"... This is going to be a lot harder than the other night," Ford continued. "I can guarantee this is going to be a heck of a basketball game. I hope it is. Akron is as good a team as we've played in a while."
Ford said he also is not concerned about his team looking ahead either.
The winner of Saturday's game will play Syracuse at the Carrier Dome at 7 p.m. Tuesday for the right to advance to Madison Square Garden in New York City April 1 for the NIT semifinals.
"These guys understand that you don't get to Point C unless you get through B," Ford said. "They understand the challenges at hand. I think they understand how good Akron is."
The Orange are the top-seeded team in this quarter of the bracket, the Minutemen are second and the Zips are sixth.
Akron came straight to Amherst from Tallahassee, Fla., after holding off Florida State 65-60 in overtime Tuesday.
The Zips finished third in the Mid-American Conference at 11-5 and upset second-seeded Western Michigan 73-62 in the league tournament before falling to Kent State 74-55 in the final.
Ford said the Minuteman coaching staff expected Akron to beat the third-seeded Seminoles. After UMass defeated Stephen F. Austin, he gathered his assistants together to watch the Zips play.
"I had two coaches working on scouting Florida State and Akron" before the Stephen F. Austin game, said Ford. "After our game we got together and met. They said Akron is going to win this game. Akron is a better basketball team. They both said it."
The Zips are a rare team with three career 1,000 point scorers on their roster. Akron is led by senior big man Jeremiah Wood who scored 13.7 points per game this season and has 1,126 in his career. Wood also leads the team with 7.8 rebounds per game.
Point guard Nick Dials, who had 21 points against the Seminoles, averages 12.1 points per game and has 1,084 in his career.
Cedrick Middleton is the third member of the grand trio, averaging 9.6 this year with 1,106 in his career.
The 6-foot-6 Wood and 6-7 junior Nate Linhart (8.6 points per game, 4.6 rebounds) give the Zips a pair of strong post players inside despite being a little undersized.
Ford said that presents a different look than UMass is used to facing.
"Akron is similar to us last year. They have two true post players," said Ford, who as a result may play Luke Bonner and Dante Milligan together.
"They have three guards and two post players," Ford added. "It's a great balance. It's one of their strengths. They're different than anyone we've played in a while. There's not really anyone in our league who plays that way."
NOTES: Senior Gary Forbes needs just one point to move into the top 30 on UMass' career scoring list. He has 1,073 which puts him one point behind No. 30 Shannon Crooks and eight back of No. 29 Jack Foley.
Forbes' 643 points this season are tied with Julius Erving in 1971-72 season for fourth best all time.
Forbes needs seven points to catch No. 3 Lou Roe's 1993-94 season and 32 to reach No. 2 Marcus Camby's 1995-96 total of 675. Erving's 1970-71 total of 727 is the best in school history.

MHERST, Mass. - UMass advanced past the second round of the NIT for the first time since 1991 with a hard-fought 68-63 win over Akron on Saturday at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen rallied from down 12 (58-46) from 8:30 left in the game to outscored Akron, 22-5 to end the game. The Minutemen (23-10) will travel to Syracuse on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The game will air on ESPN. It will be a rematch of UMass' epic 107-100 win at the Carrier Dome on Nov. 28, 2007. Ricky Harris led UMass with 20 points and Chris Lowe had 17, including the go-ahead free throws late in the game. A-10 Player of the Year Gary Forbes scored in double-figures for the 37th game in a row with 11.
Akron's Jeremiah Wood was a beast all game as he scored the most points by any Akron player this season with 25 to set a new career-high.
Forbes made a 1-of-2 free throws with 20 seconds left for a 66-63 edge, leaving Akron with the final shot and a chance to tie the game, but Woods's shot was off and
UMass tied the game and regained the lead on a pair of free throws by Lowe to make it 61-60 with 3:14 left in the game. He then hit two free throws on an intentional foul by Akron's Nick Dials with 2:52 left in regulation for a 63-60 lead. Dials grabbed Lowe's ankle while the players were fighting for a loose ball. Forbes was fouled on the possession after the initial free throws and made both of his foul shots for a 65-60 lead with 2:38 left. That finished a 19-2 run.
Brett McKnight made a 3-pointer to cut the UMass lead to 65-63 with 2:10 left.
Down, 58-46, UMass scored the game's next nine points to cut the lead to 58-55 on a Forbes' lay-up with 4:45 left in the second half.
The Minutemen went ice cold from the floor as they went more than five minutes without a basket as Akron continued to build its lead to double-figures with 10 minutes left in the game, 54-43. Akron jumped to a 52-43 lead on a Brett McKnight 3-pointer with 11:43 left in the second half. Wood was a force in the paint as he scored nine points in a six-minute span.
Wood hit on a 3-pointer and jumper in the lane to give Akron a 44-39 lead with 15:30 left in the second half for the Zips' largest lead of the game to date. UMass came back to within one at 44-43 on Etienne Brower's pair of free throws.
The Zips took their first lead since the first minute of the game on a Nate Linhart lay-up two minutes into the second half, to give Akron a 37-36 lead. That was short lived as Harris nailed a 3-pointer with 12:29 left to regain the UMass lead, 39-37.
Akron cut the lead to 31-27 on a wide-open 3-pointer with Cedrick Middleton with 2:57 left in the first half. The Zips made it 31-29 on a breakaway dunk by Brett McKnight with 1:30 left in the half to cap at 15-7 run to end the period.
Brower's 3-pointer with 7:20 left made it 27-16. Lowe had back-to-back lay-ups to put UMass ahead, 24-13 with 8:04 left in the first half. Harris' consecutive 3-pointers with 15:30 left in the first half, gave UMass a 13-8 lead.
NOTES
UMass advanced to the NIT third round for the first time since 1991, when the reached the semifinals.

Luke Bonner drew his 15th charge of the season in the first half.
Luke Bonner hit his first 3-pointer in 12 games with a trey with 13:40 left in the first half.
QUOTES
Coach Travis Ford on the game
This Akron team is a very good basketball team. Not to take anything away from them, but we were not executing in the first half. We were not playing our best, we gave up too many threes, we were not rotating like we wanted to. We made plays when we needed to. They went on a run and we called a timeout and had a little talk. In that timeout I think those guys decided they wanted to win the game. Believe it or not it was a very calm talk which is unusual for us. I thought we just needed to settle down and get focused on winning.
Coach Ford on the timeout called at the end of the game
During the timeout, I joked with them and said, "if you want to win this game we are going to play some defense, offensively we are fine but we aren't being tough enough." They were out-toughing us, slapping the balls, bodying up against us, getting inside of the basket and laying it in. Then the other guys started chiming in, especially the seniors, saying, "there is only eight minutes left to play, we need to be focused on winning." I think it put things in perspective. I think before that everyone was just in a fog. We gained composure and our attitude completely changed.
Gary Forbes on the comeback
I think guys just realized this was really our last home game. We couldn't lose this game and we didn't want to lose this game, especially the seniors. We realized how hard Tony [Gaffney] was playing and we fed off his energy. His defense against Jeramiah Wood in the last seven minutes of the game propelled us to play better defense.
Ricky Harris on Tony Gaffney
Being 6-9 he knows how to play post defense. A lot of our big guys were going for the up-fake, but Tony stayed on the ground. He figured that out early in the game. He learned how to defend it and made two huge steals for us. Those steals let us get on the break and run. When we jumped the passing lanes and ran the ball that is when we were playing our best.
Coach Kieth Dambrot on the game
We had a difficult start and a difficult end obviously. I though early in the game we played okay, we just were a little bit flustered. And at the end of the game I htought we were just tired. It was kind of like being caught between a rock and a hard place. I didn't want to play our young players too much, we put our subs in a difficult position to win the game and they just couldn't get it done.
Coach Dambrot on Chris Lowe
Contrary to popular belief, our game plan did not revolve around Gary Forbes. We felt like we could guard Forbes with Nate Linhart. My view of their team is different than anyone in the country's. I think that Chris Lowe is the guy to stop, not Forbes and not Ricky Harris. Lowe is probably one of the point guards in America, he creates opportunities for everyone on that team. Lowe has a lot of the same attributes that Lebron James had when I coached him in high school. He has the knack to make winning plays. Don't be surprised if they don't win a few more.
MHERST - During a time-out with 11 minutes, 20 seconds remaining in Saturday's National Invitation Tournament game, University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Travis Ford proposed a novel idea with his team trailing Akron by nine points.
"I said that if we're going to win this game we're going to have to play a little bit of defense," Ford joked. "I said, 'We're going to have to decide if we're going to be tough enough to win this game.'
"... Believe it or not it was a very calm conversation," Ford added. "We just focused on winning."
Things got worse before they got better for the Minutemen as the Zips stretched their lead to 12, but UMass finished the game on a 22-5 run and held off Akron 68-63 in the second round game of the NIT before 3,118 fans at the Mullins Center.
UMass (23-10), which advanced to the quarterfinals of the NIT for the first time since 1991, has a rematch at Syracuse (21-13) at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Minutemen defeated the Orange 107-100 at the Carrier Dome Nov. 28.
Akron completed its season at 24-11.
UMass junior point guard Chris Lowe, who had nine of his 17 points in that final run, scored two in the lane to start the spurt.
Ricky Harris followed with a driving layup as the Minutemen scored nine straight to make the score 58-55 with just under five minutes left.
Two free throws for the Zips by Cedrick Middleton (14 points) could not stop UMass' momentum as Lowe answered with a floater and Harris hit a pull-up curling into the lane.
Akron guard Nick Dials underestimated Tony Gaffney's leaping ability and tried to loft a pass over him. Gaffney sprang up and snared the ball, starting a break that ended with Middleton fouling Lowe. The junior point guard made both from the line with 3:14 left to put UMass ahead 61-60.
Gaffney knocked away another pass by Dials who tripped Lowe as he tried to recover the ball. Despite considerable protests, Dials was called for an intentional foul.
Lowe made both free throws again to give the Minutemen a 63-60 lead with 2:52 left.
Gary Forbes made two free throws to stretch UMass' edge to five points, before Brett McKnight answered for Akron with a 3-pointer that made the score 65-63.
Both teams went cold after that. Forbes missed a chance to ice the game by making just one of two free throws with 20 seconds left which kept the lead within one possession at 66-63.
Jeremiah Wood's 3-point attempt to tie the game bounced off the front of the rim to Harris with three seconds left. Harris quickly launched the ball ahead to Dante Milligan, who threw down a one-handed dunk at the buzzer to punctuate the win.
"In the first eight minutes we played very hard and the last eight minutes we played very hard," Ford said. "In between that we didn't do very much, but we made plays when we needed to."
Harris led UMass with 20 points.
"I thought he played with great energy," Ford said. "He had several key rebounds at the end of the game and played great defense at times."
Lowe added 17 points and five assists. Forbes struggled from the field going 3-for-11, but kept his season-long streak of scoring in double digits alive. He finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Wood's 25 points were the most by any Akron player this season.
UMass controlled the game early, opening a 27-16 lead with 7:19 remaining in the first half.
But the Zips began chipping away. They cut the deficit to 34-31 at halftime and opened the second half on a 13-5 spurt that gave Akron a 44-39 lead and momentum.
Riding Wood, who had 18 of his points in the second half, the Zips stretched their edge to 58-46 before the Minutemen began their comeback.
"At the end of the game I thought we were just tired. It was kind of like being caught between a rock and a hard place," Akron coach Keith Dambrot said. "I didn't want to play our young players too much. We put our subs in a difficult position to win the game and they just couldn't get it done."

MHERST - UMass junior point guard Chris Lowe has inspired some interesting comparisons from opposing coaches this season.
Following a home victory by the Minutemen against St. Louis on Feb. 17, Billikens coach Rick Majerus described Lowes effort as Stocktonesque in reference to former Utah Jazz point guard John Stockton.
After UMass 68-63 victory over Akron in the second round of the NIT tournament yesterday at the Mullins Center, Zips coach Keith Dambrot said Lowe reminded him of a kid he coached at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
In my opinion thats one of the best point guards in America, Dambrot said about Lowe. Ive been fortunate, I coached LeBron James in high school.
I think he has a lot of the same attributes as LeBron had. He has the knack for making winning plays.
The Minutemen (23-10) advanced to the quarterfinal round and will play at Syracuse on Tuesday night.
Lowe earned those accolades on both ends of the floor performing chores that dont turn up on the stat sheet. Lowe finished with 17 points, five assists and three steals, but he contributed much more than those numbers show.
Lowes whirlwind defense brought UMass out of a serious second-half meltdown to secure another game for the seniors. The Minutemen led 34-31 at the break, but they allowed the Zips to dominate the paint in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.
Akron senior forward Jeremiah Wood devoured everybody UMass coach Travis Ford assigned to cover him. Using his full assortment of back-in moves, jump hooks, free throws and the occasional long ball, Wood scored 18 points during a 27-12 run that put the Zips up 58-46 with 9:29 to play. Wood finished with 25 points.
When they got up (12) we called timeout, and in that timeout, those guys decided they were going to win the game, Ford said. It was, believe it or not, a very calm conversation, and thats unusual for us.
But I thought we just needed to settle down and get focused on winning. I thought we were focused just on getting the game over with.
With Lowe pressuring Akron point guard Nick Dials, UMass denied Wood down-low touches, sealed the perimeter and forced timely turnovers. The Minutemen defense fed a 20-5 scoring run that limited Akron to just one field goal in the final 8:36. Lowe started the run with a floater in the lane and sank four straight free throws to put UMass up 63-60 with 2:52 to play.
UMass suffered a setback late when forward Tony Gaffney went down with a freak leg injury with 2:38 to play. Ford said Gaffney is doubtful for the Syracuse game.
or 32 minutes, the University of Akron basketball team looked poised and ready to reach a third-round game in the National Invitation Tournament.
Then the University of Massachusetts decided that it was the team to do just that.
The Minutemen (23-10) rallied from a late 12-point deficit Saturday afternoon to defeat the Zips 68-63 in an NIT game before a crowd of 3,118 at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass.
The Zips (24-11) led 58-46 with 8:36 remaining, but UMass closed with a 22-5 rally that sent it to a third-round game Tuesday night at Syracuse.
''We ran out of gas,'' UA coach Keith Dambrot told the media afterward. ''It went right to the wire. We could have won the game. We made some bad plays the last five minutes.''
The Zips dug themselves a 27-16 first-half hole, with some of the UMass edge coming when Dambrot rested his starters.
That caused Dambrot to stick with his regulars more than he normally does, playing them an average of 32 minutes.
A 23-point turnaround from that 27-16 deficit to that 58-46 edge was led by the starters and reserve Brett McKnight, but might have hurt near the finish.
''We had a difficult start and a difficult end, obviously,'' Dambrot said. ''I thought early in the game, we played OK, we were just a little flustered.
''And at the end of the game, we were just tired. It was kind of like being caught between a rock and a hard place. I didn't want to play our young players too much. We put our subs in a difficult position (early) to win the game and they couldn't get it done.''
In that fateful stretch run, the Zips had seven of their 16 turnovers and could manage just two free throws by Cedrick Middleton and a 3-point basket by McKnight.
The Minutemen did it by picking up the defensive pressure, especially by double-teaming senior center Jeremiah Wood, who scored 25 points in the first 32 minutes and none in the final eight.
The defensive shutdowns and UA turnovers helped UMass have a 9-0 run and a 10-0 run down the stretch.
UMass coach Travis Ford said a late timeout settled down his team and fueled the comeback.
''Akron is a very good basketball team,'' Ford said in his postgame news conference. ''They went on a run and we called a timeout and had a little talk. I thought we just needed to settle down and get focused on winning.
''They were out-toughing us, slapping the balls, bodying up against us, getting inside of the basket and laying it in. I think before that (the timeout), we were in a fog. We gained composure and our attitude completely changed.''
The Zips were hurt by a controversial intentional foul call on senior guard Nick Dials with 2:52 left. UMass was leading 61-60, when Dials lost the ball near midcourt and was called for an intentional foul on Minuteman point guard Chris Lowe.
Lowe made two free throws and, on the possession that UMass got for the foul, Gary Forbes was fouled and made two free throws to make it 65-60 with 2:38 left.
Despite not having much momentum, the Zips were still alive in the final minute, but 3-point misses by McKnight and Wood allowed UMass to hang on.
Wood, in his final game in a Zips uniform, was 9-of-17 from the field and 6-of-8 from the foul line for those 25 points, which were a career high.
Middleton, also in his last UA game, had 14 points, and McKnight, a freshman forward, reached double figures with 11.
UMass, which finished third in the Atlantic 10 Conference to NCAA Tournament participants Xavier and Temple, was led by Ricky Harris (20 points) and Lowe (17 points and five assists).
In the first half, UMass led 7-6 before four 3-pointers buoyed a 20-10 run that put the hosts ahead 27-16. Two 3-pointers by Middleton and one by Dials got UA to 34-31 at halftime.
Wood scored nine points in the first five minutes of the second half to put the Zips ahead 44-39. Later, Wood added another nine points in a 14-3 UA run to make it 58-46 and signal the UMass comeback.
