Syracuse Athletics - recap/quotes
assachusetts made its Carrier Dome debut a memorable one back in November with a stunning victory over Syracuse. The Orange are determined not to let that happen again.
"We owe them one," Orange center Arinze Onuaku said. "They're probably going to come in here and they're probably going to think they can beat us again, but we're going to go out there and play hard. We're a better team than we were earlier in the season."
The teams meet again in the Carrier Dome on Tuesday night in the NIT quarterfinals, and a trip to Madison Square Garden will be on the line. The winner advances against either Arizona State or Florida on April 1.
The top-seeded Orange (21-13) are coming off an impressive 88-72 win at home over Maryland, while the second-seeded Minutemen (23-10) advanced with a 68-63 come-from-behind win against Akron on Saturday at the Mullins Center.
Ricky Harris scored 20 points as the Minutemen rallied from 12 points down with eight minutes to go to nip the Zips. It was eerily similar to their win over Syracuse in the fall - UMass trailed by 12 points with 14:32 left and posted a 107-100 win, the most points ever scored by an opponent since the Carrier Dome opened in 1980.
Duplicating that feat would be remarkable. No team has beaten Syracuse twice in the dome in the same season. And only once has an opponent beaten the Orange at home twice in the same season -Penn State in 1922-23.
"I think we're more hungry," said freshman forward Donte Greene, who leads the Orange in scoring with 17.5 points per game. "We understand what we need to do."
Tops on the list will be defending the long-range shot. In their impressive victory, the Minutemen hit 14-of-31 3-pointers and methodically dissected the Syracuse zone and whatever other defense the Orange tried.
"We just want to play as well as we can," said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, who is 0-3 against UMass. "It doesn't matter what tournament you're in, you go out and you want to play as well as you can."
Syracuse has overcome the disappointment of not making the NCAA tournament, but the Orange's deflating loss to Villanova in the first round of the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden still grates. They feel they have some unfinished business there.
"We're just trying to win the NIT. We want to get back down to the Garden," Greene said. "We know we had a disappointing season and there are definitely disappointed fans."
This isn't the same team the Minutemen defeated in the sixth game of the Orange's season. Guard Eric Devendorf led Syracuse with 23 points (four games later he was lost for the season with a knee injury), and four of the team's five freshmen (center Sean Williams has not played since mid-January) now have a full Big East season of experience.
"I'm sure that it (another loss to UMass) is not going to happen twice," junior forward Kristof Ongenaet said. "It's not going to happen. That was our mistake. It was preseason, so we can't let that happen anymore. We have to get that win."
Notes:@Of schools Boeheim has faced two or more times in his 32 years as head coach at Syracuse, UMass is the only one he has never beaten. The Minutemen are 3-0 against the Hall of Famer, winning in 1992, 1995 and 2007. ... The Minutemen reached the 1991 NIT Final Four in New York for their best showing in 10 previous appearances.
MHERST - Junior forward Tony Gaffney watched from the sideline Monday, limping noticeably from a left knee injury, as his University of Massachusetts teammates prepared for their rematch with Syracuse in the National Invitation Tournament at 7 tonight at the Carrier Dome).
Minuteman coach Travis Ford called the injury a strain, and was pessimistic about Gaffney's chances of playing tonight.
"I doubt he'll play. I doubt he'll even dress. It's changed back and forth," Ford said. Sunday "it didn't look good. (Monday) he said it looked a little bit better.
"It would be his and the trainer's decision," Ford added. "But I can't see any way he'll play."
Gaffney has played by far the most minutes off the bench of any Minuteman this season, and his 20.6 per game are more than starting center Dante Milligan averages at 18.2.
Gaffney is averaging 3.3 points and 5.1 rebounds and is second on the team with 57 blocked shots. Ford said his energy and size would be missed.
"He played very well against them last time and this is an up-and-down game and an active game with a lot of loose balls. He's usually pretty good in games like that," Ford said. "Tony is a big part of what we do ... I'm more concerned about the future. Getting hurt this late in the season can linger on to next season."
If Gaffney can't go, Ford said there's likely more minutes for freshman center Papa Lo, who has played sporadically over the last few weeks, and freshman wing Matt Glass, who can play inside in a small lineup.
Lo said he is ready.
"In the last couple games I didn't get that much playing time," Lo said. "I've learned a lot by watching and practicing. It's a chance I have to use. I have to play as hard as I can."
The Minutemen (23-10) are trying to be the first team ever to beat the Orange (21-13) twice in the same season at the Carrier Dome.
UMass scored the most points ever by a Syracuse opponent in its 107-100 win Nov. 28. No team has played at the Carrier Dome twice in the same season since 1977-78 when St. Bonaventure split with the Orange.
Syracuse has not lost to the same team in any home arena since 1923.
"I figure they want us because we beat them the first time and they want revenge and everything" junior point guard Chris Lowe said. "But that was in November. They got better and we got better. We're going to have to find a way to win."
The winner earns a tip to the NIT semifinals April 1 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
In the earlier game, Ricky Harris had 25 points to lead UMass, and Gary Forbes added 23.
Eric Devendorf scored 23, and Donte Greene, Arinze Onuaku and Jonny Flynn each had 20.
Greene leads Syracuse with 17.7 points per game to go with 7.1 rebounds, and Flynn is next with 15.7 points and 5.2 rebounds.
Paul Harris may be the team's most versatile player with 14.7 points, a team-high 8.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.
The Orange have gone 17-11 since the loss to UMass, with a rotation of seven players after an injury knocked Devendorf out for the season. Ford said the loss of the veteran guard has made Syracuse more focused on the inside.
"They're a lot more post-oriented. Onuaku is getting a lot more touches," Ford said. "They've become a much bigger more physical basketball team. We can't rely on last game as a reference. There are some things we can look at and learn from, but this is a different basketball game."
The Orange are using the loss as motivation.
"We owe them one," Onuaku said. "They're probably going to come in here and they're probably going to think they can beat us again, but we're going to go out there and play hard. We're a better team than we were earlier in the season."
Reserve Kristof Ongenaet all but guaranteed a Syracuse win.
"I'm sure that it (another loss to UMass) is not going to happen twice," Ongenaet said. "It's not going to happen. That was our mistake. It was preseason, so we can't let that happen anymore. We have to get that win."
UMass is the only team Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has faced more than once and never beaten as he is 0-3 against the Minutemen.
This will be their second meeting in the postseason. UMass beat the Orange 77-71 in overtime in the 1992 NCAA Tournament.
The winner will play April 1 against the victor of tonight's 9 p.m. quarterfinal between Arizona State and defending NCAA national champion Florida at Tempe, Ariz.
Ford is looking forward to tonight's game.
"We're excited we're still playing and the opportunity we have at hand," said Ford, who will coach the Minutemen on the third anniversary of his being hired at UMass. "We know Syracuse is playing good basketball, but we think we are too."

t may not be the way the Massachusetts men's basketball team hoped to stand at the beginning of the season, but UMass remains one win away from qualifying for the semifinals of the National Invitational Tournament at Madison Square Garden.
Before the Minutemen can look ahead, they must complete a feat that has never been accomplished before: win two games at the Carrier Dome in one season. The Maroon and White travel to Syracuse, N.Y., tonight to face the Orange with a trip to MSG on the line.
The team's win over Akron at the Mullins Center Saturday marks UMass's second trip to the NIT quarterfinals. It reached the semifinals in 1991.
UMass (23-10) defeated Syracuse (21-13) on Nov. 28 before 20,644 hostile fans. The Minutemen outran the Orange, 107-100, in what was one of the team's original displays this season of the capabilities of its up-tempo offense. The 107 points was the most scored by a visiting team at the Dome since its inception in 1980.
"It's hard to beat a team twice, but we know that we're capable of doing it," junior point guard Chris Lowe said. "We're going to have to grind it out, just like you have to do this time of year."
The Minutemen certainly did not ride their defense to victory the first time around - the 100 points is most UMass has allowed this year.
But the Minutemen did what they like to do best: shoot the basketball. UMass took a season-high 73 field-goal attempts against Syracuse, including 31 from 3-point range. And the team made nearly half of those 3-pointers, converting 14.
The Minutemen even survived a 2-for-9 3-point shooting performance from sophomore shooting guard Ricky Harris during the first half. Harris finished with a game-high 25 points.
Yet much has changed since that last meeting. The Minutemen do not rely on the 3-point shot as much as they did earlier this year. More importantly, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim is without guard Eric Devendorf, who suffered a season-ending knee injury earlier this year. Devendorf scored 23 points and added five rebounds and two assists against UMass on Nov. 28.
While employing a seven-man rotation, the Orange may have trouble running with the Minutemen. In their first meeting, the five Syracuse starters played an average of 37 minutes and showed little fatigue down the stretch. After logging a season of basketball with a short bench, things might be different for the Orange - but it's not something Ford wants to assume will happen.
"We're going to play our style of basketball. Syracuse's zone defense allows them to rest," Ford said. "If they get tired, then they get tired. It's not something we're going to focus on in this game."
After the game, a frustrated Boeheim was at a loss for words about how to get his team to play better defense.
"Well, we haven't been able to fix it in six weeks, that's all I can tell you," he said.
Though the Orange didn't surrender 100 points again, the Orange finished near the bottom of the Big East in scoring defense, allowing an average of 74 points per game.
Without Devendorf, freshmen Jonny Flynn and Donte Green have carried much of the offensive load. Expect Greene and junior forward Arinze Onuaku to test the Minutemen in the paint. The pair scored 20 points each against UMass in the first meeting, as a part of the team's 52 total points in the paint.
Senior center Dante Milligan played well (17 points, seven rebounds) in that contest but saw limited action due to foul trouble. However, the team will most likely be without junior forward Tony Gaffney who injured his knee against Akron on Saturday.
If the Minutemen cannot defend the frontcourt, then the team's only chance may be to outrun and try to outscore the Orange - again.
"They're a more post and rebound-oriented team [without Devendorf]," Ford said. "Onuaku is getting a lot more touches inside. There's no question that they've become a much more physical basketball team."
At the time, the win over the Orange looked to be the centerpiece of a resume that would get the Minutemen into the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection. Though UMass dropped several games in-conference that it needed to win, Syracuse's 9-9 performance in conference play hurt the Minutemen even more. Therefore, the team's RPI kept getting worse even when they were winning games.

he University of Massachusetts Minutemen can expect a chilly reception at the Carrier Dome tonight. After all, revenge is a dish best served cold.
Syracuse (21-13) will face UMass (23-10) tonight in the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament. The Minutemen defeated Syracuse 107-100 at the Dome back on Nov. 28, a loss that went a long way toward dooming the Orange to the NIT.
"We owe them one," Syracuse center Arinze Onuaku said on Thursday just moments after the Orange's win over Maryland in the second round. UMass still had to play Akron in a second-round game on Saturday.
UMass beat Akron 68-63, rallying from a nine-point deficit late in the game, to set up tonight's rematch.
Syracuse's early season loss to UMass was the first in a series of games that would eventually spawn a myriad of what-if scenarios for the Orange.
Games that Syracuse coulda-shoulda-woulda won. Wins that might have catapulted the Orange into the NCAA Tournament. Make that win. Just one win.
The home loss to Rhode Island. The overtime loss at Georgetown. The two-point loss to UConn. The inexplicable loss to South Florida. The 11-point lead versus Pittsburgh.
And it started on Nov. 28 with UMass.
"Whenever you get a chance to play a team that beat you before, you get that extra motivation, that extra push to go out there and beat them," said Syracuse point guard Jonny Flynn, who despite a sore back scored 23 points in the Orange's win over Maryland. "You don't want to get beat by a team twice, especially on your home court. If it was a road loss it would be a different feeling, but getting beat twice by a team on your home court would be pretty bad. We'll be up for the game and be ready to go out and get a W."
The winner of tonight's game will advance to the NIT's semifinals on April 1 at Madison Square Garden. The championship game will be played on Thursday, April 3. The NIT no longer has a consolation game.
UMass is the first team to play Syracuse twice at the Carrier Dome in the same season since Navy in 1985-86. No team has ever beaten Syracuse in the Dome twice in the same season.
The only time Syracuse has suffered two homecourt losses to the same team in the same year happened in the 1922-23 season when Penn State accomplished the feat.
The Minutemen have won eight of their last nine games. The lone loss in that span was to Charlotte in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
"They're probably going to come in here and they're probably going to think they can beat us again, but we're going to go out there and play hard," Onuaku said. "We're a better team than we were earlier in the season."
Syracuse certainly is a different team than it was in the early stages of this season.
In its first nine games, Syracuse gave up an average of 79 points per game. Siena scored 89 against the Orange. Washington scored 85. Rhode Island went for 91.
But UMass topped them all. The Minutemen's 107-point total was the most allowed by Syracuse in the history of the Dome. Only six times in SU coach Jim Boeheim's 32-year tenure had a team scored more than 100 points against the Orange and only once in that time - the 108-69 DePaul Debacle in 2006 - had a team scored more than UMass in regulation.
"I'm sure that it's not going to happen twice," Syracuse forward Kristof Ongenaet said. "It's not going to happen anymore. That was our mistake. It was preseason, so we can't let that happen anymore. We have to get that win."
In its most recent 24 games, Syracuse has improved defensively. The Orange has allowed just 72.3 points per game.
UMass figures to test Syracuse's defense. The Minutemen averaged 81.5 points this season. Four players averaged more than 12 points per game with senior forward Gary Forbes leading the way at 19.8. As a team, UMass made 36 percent of its 3-point attempts.
If Syracuse is going to serve its cold dish, the Orange will have to hope the UMass shooters are cold as well.
f its 34 games so far this season, Syracuse's late-November matchup with the Atlantic 10's Massachusetts has to go down as the strangest.
After all, the prevailing image from the game was a fuming Eric Devendorf, seconds after being whistled for an intentional foul on UMass guard Ricky Harris, being held back by teammates during a profanity-laced feud with a student fan.
And in the background, of course, the final score, 107-100 in favor of the Minutemen, lit up like a marquee for a wild and crazy night at the Carrier Dome.
That was Nov. 28, and on Thursday, the SU players spoke with anticipation about a rematch with Massachusetts, who beat Akron on Saturday to earn a trip to the NIT's quarterfinal round. The game is tonight at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome, where a few months ago UMass set records in its run-and-gun offensive assault on the Orange.
"We owe them one," SU center Arinze Onuaku said. "They're probably going to come in here, and they're probably going to think they can beat us again. But we've got to play hard. We're a better team than we were at the beginning of the season."
The same could also be said for Massachusetts, which lost a heartbreaker in the A-10 conference tournament to Charlotte, a game that if won would likely have put it in the NCAA Tournament. The Minutemen have still won eight of their last nine games, and it still has proven it can score. UMass finished first in the conference in 3-pointers made and second in scoring, assists per game and field goals made.
Good news for Syracuse, though, as the Minutemen might be without 6-foot-8 role player Tony Gaffney, who injured his knee against Akron on Saturday. Gaffney scored four points and grabbed five rebounds in 21 minutes against the Orange in November.
Gaffney's absence will weaken Massachusetts' bench, and, for a team that loves to run, could become a factor down the stretch. The Minutemen used their defense to knock off Akron, 68-63, tying their second-lowest scoring total of the season.
After the Maryland game on Thursday, the Syracuse players were asked how they felt about a possible rematch with UMass, even though the matchup hadn't been decided yet. It didn't matter - the players jumped at the questions anyway. And it was clear how eager they are to getting another shot at running with the Minutemen.
"I'm just sure that it's not going to happen twice," SU forward Kris Ongenaet said. "It's not going to happen anymore. That was our mistake."
YRACUSE, N.Y. - UMass is advancing to the NIT Final Four for the first time since 1991 as the Minutemen became the first team to beat Syracuse at the Carrier Dome twice in one season with a 81-77 win on Tuesday night in the NIT Quarterfinals. UMass will take on the winner of Florida/Arizona State which is being played later Tuesday night, next Tuesday, April 1 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Dante Milligan's dunk with 27 seconds left in regulation gave UMass a 78-77 lead, which capped a miraculous comeback, as the Minutemen trailed by 22 points with 14:34 left in regulation. Milligan then blocked Donte Greene with 20 seconds left to set up Chris Lowe's free throw with 17.1 seconds left then Ricky Harris made.
The Minutemen were hindered by poor shooting in the first half. The finished the game just 38 percent from the floor, making 11-of-31 and 35.5 percent from 3-point range. In the first half, UMass fell behind by as many as 21, as the Minutemen shot just 23 percent, making only 2-of-15 3-pointers. UMass was led by Ricky Harris, who had 23, including (6-7) in the second half alone. Etienne Brower added 19. Luke Bonner had a career-high 13 points.
Syracuse had four players score in double-figures led by Arinze Okuaku, who had 20.
Harris' trey with 3:41 made it 74-69 Cuse. Bonner's 3-pointer with 6:08 cut the deficit to eight at 70-62. That was UMass' seventh trey of the second half.
The Minutemen continued to surge back as UMass made three 3-pointers in a row, one by Brower and two by Harris to make it 64-55 Syracuse with 8:52 left in the second half.
UMass cut the lead to 12 points at 54-42, on a tip-in by Dante Milligan with 12:16 left in the second half. The finished off a 9-0 run which began with back-to-back Brower 3-pointers.
Syracuse went on a 14-2 run near the end of the first half to build a lead as large as 43-22 with 17 seconds left in the half. Lowe made a lay-up with five seconds left for the halftime score of 43-24 Orange. UMass was a dreadful 10-of-43 from the floor in the first half for 23 percent. The Minutemen made just 2-of-15 from 3-point range for 13 percent. Syracuse was led by Greene, who had 11 points including three of SU's four 3-pointers in the half. The Orange made 15 of their final 27 shots to close the half.
UMass' biggest offensive weapon was Bonner, who scored eight points in the game's first 16 minutes to equal his best in more than two months. Bonner's foul-line jumper brought the Minutemen back to within nine at 29-20 with 4:42 left in the first.
Syracuse finally started making baskets and went on a 10-0 run over three minutes which was keyed by dunks from Onuaku, Paul Harris. That gave the Orange 21-8 lead with 9:14 left in the first half.
The poor shooting continued through the first eight minutes as UMass stood at 18 percent (3-of-17) and Syracuse was slightly better at 21 percent (4-of-19) with a slim 11-8 lead.
In a contrast to the first meeting, the teams combined to start the game 1-for-17 from the floor as Syracuse missed its first nine shots while UMass was 1-of-8 in the first four minutes. That first basket came on a Milligan lay-up 2:30 into the game.
NOTES
UMass is advancing to the NIT Final Four for the first time since 1991. It is just the second time UMass will be in the NIT's semifinals.
The Minutemen have won three postseason games in the same season for the first time since 1996, when they won four NCAA Tournament games in advancing to the NCAA Final Four.
UMass became the first team to beat Syracuse at the Carrier Dome twice in the same season.
The Minutemen are just the second team to beat Syracuse at home twice in a season. UMass joins the 1922-23 Penn State Nittany Lions, in beating SU at home two times in the same season.
UMass has won its last four games against Syracuse, winning in 1992, 1995 and twice this year.
UMass continued to be the personal bug-a-boo for Syracuse's Hall of Fame Head Coach Jim Boeheim, as he is now 0-4 all-time against UMass. The Minutemen are the only team which Boeheim has coached against more than once which he has not beaten.
UMass won on the third anniversary of the hiring of head coach Travis Ford, who signed on with UMass on March 25, 2005.
Ricky Harris scored in double-figures for the 31st time this season and 36th in his career with 23 points.
Harris scored 20 or more for the 18th time this season.
Etienne Brower scored in double-figures for the 24th time this season.
Dante Milligan scored in double-figures for the 12th time this season.
Gary Forbes did not score in double-figures for the first time in 38 games. It was the first time this season he did not score in double-figures.
Luke Bonner scored a career-high 13 points. He had his most points since Jan. 19 when he had eight against Charlotte, when he tallied eight. He had eight in the first half alone.
Luke Bonner drew two charges to give him 17 for the season.
Chris Lowe had 11 assists, his fifth game this season in double-figures.
UMass had 16 assists in the second half on 20 baskets.
YRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior center Arinze Onuaku collected a team-high 20 points and claimed eight rebounds in front of 20,162 fans at the Carrier Dome on Tuesday, but a second-half Massachusetts (24-10) rally and an 81-77 win ends the Syracuse (21-14) season one game shy of the National Invitation Tournament semifinal round.
The Orange offense boasted four scorers in double figures. Freshman forward Donté Greene totaled 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Freshman point guard Jonny Flynn tallied 14 points, dished a club-best eight assists and secured six boards.
Freshman combo guard Scoop Jardine recorded 12 points, posted four rebounds and contributed four helpers in 28 minutes off the Syracuse bench.
Massachusetts utilized a scorching 55.6 percent second-half shooting performance to overcome a 22-point deficit with just under 15 minutes remaining. After shooting 23.3 percent from the floor in the first half, the Minutemen recorded a 56.3 percent long-range display in the closing 20 minutes.
After the Minutemen grabbed its last lead of the game, 78-77, following a dunk from Dante Milligan with 26 ticks remaining, the Orange twice had opportunities to escape with the win but Greene s leaner on the baseline was blocked and SU came away without a shot on its final possession.
Massachusetts will meet the winner of tonight s Arizona State and Florida contest on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.
Syracuse raced to its largest lead of the game with 14:37 remaining after leading 43-24 at the intermission. Flynn s steal and Jardine s subsequent lay-in provided SU with the 22-point cushion, 54-32.
Massachusetts answered, scoring the game s next 10 points and trimming the Orange advantage to 12 points, 54-42, at the 12:44 mark.
The Minutemen narrowed the cushion to single digits, 64-55, after a three-point basket from Ricky Harris. Syracuse responded and built a 14-point edge, 70-56, following a fast-break lay-in from Flynn with 7:48 remaining.
However, UMass closed the contest on a 25-7 spurt en route to the victory. The Orange led by 10 points with just over five minutes on the clock, but a lay-in from Milligan at the 1:20 mark closed the gap to one possession, 76-73. With 54 seconds left, Harris fifth and final three-point basket of the game pulled the visitors within one, 77-76, setting the stage for Milligan s go-ahead dunk.
Ricky Harris led all scorers with 23 points, while Etienne Brower added 19. The UMass duo combined to convert 10 three-point field goals, including eight in the second half. Milligan finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Jardine powered the Orange on a 10-0 run midway through the first half, providing the hosts with a 21-8 lead at the 9:15 mark before intermission. While both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm early, it was Philadelphia native's presence for the Orange that awoke the sleeping giant.
Jardine keyed the run with a contributing hand on every basket during the spurt. Greene started the stretch with a three-point basket off a pass from the rookie guard. Onuaku and Harris flushed home two dunks on the Orange's ensuing possessions off feeds from Jardine. SU closed the streak on a steal and fast-break lay-in from Jardine and a free throw from Onuaku.
The Syracuse cushion grew to 19 points, 41-22, after a 12-2 run to the close the opening 20 minutes. Freshman center Rick Jackson charged the spurt with a fast-break two-hand dunk before corralling and depositing a loose ball. Flynn capped the push with a lay-in on the break and a highlight-reel blocked shot off the glass on a UMass fast-break lay-up attempt.
The Orange 2007-08 season concludes with a 21-14 overall record. Hall of Fame head coach Jim Boeheim finishes his 32nd season at the head of the SU sideline with 771-career victories. Syracuse s 87-81 win against Robert Morris on March 18 in the opening round of the NIT secured Boeheim s 30th-career 20-win season, tying him for the most all-time with legendary UNC bench mentor Dean Smith.
COACH BOEHEIM QUOTES
Opening Statement:
"The first half, I really think we did the things we needed to do to get in the lead. Our defense was good, we made some bad turnovers, but overall our defense was good. The second half, we just broke down defensively and gave them some wide-open threes, and they're going to make them. First half, we didn't. They shot 2-for-15 because we were there. Second half, we didn't. The pressure is going to hurt you, they're going to get some errors, we made a couple. We handled the pressure, but we missed 20 layups. When people are pressing you, you have to keep scoring. You have to keep going to the basket, you have to keep scoring, you can't hold the ball. We did a good job of getting the ball inside, and Ricky [Jackson] and Arinze [Onuaku] got what we wanted, but you have to make them. They're going to make some threes, they're going to get some turnovers, they're going to get openings because they can push it so well, and we're going to wear down a little bit. But, you have to make your layups, and we didn't do that, and that was the ballgame."
On Donte Greene's last play:
"We wanted him to go to the basket. He just didn't get a good angle on it."
On UMass pressing Arinze Onuaku:
"They had to do that, and that's the only way they could get back into the game ... to pressure. We have seven guys ... we got tired a little bit. But, we handled the pressure alright overall. We actually had less turnovers in the second half than in the first. But, we missed too many layups. It wasn't just Arinze, Ricky missed some easy layups, too. We just missed too many layups. When a team pressures you and gambles like they did, you have to score. We just didn't score."
On UMass's three-point shooting in the second half:
"The second half, they had more coming at us in transition, when we were fighting to get back, and didn't get back. Paul [Harris] and Kristof [Ongenaet] were back there a couple times, and didn't get to the three-point shooters. You can't do that. They're going to score, and they're going to make some threes, when they're running and pushing it like that. You can't miss 25 layups. You just have to keep scoring. We missed too many easy shots around the basket."
On Paul Harris's critical turnover:
"Paul didn't get back on the three-point shooter, then he caught the ball and threw it right to him. Same thing he did against Pittsburgh. It was the exact same play."
On losing big leads throughout the season:
"We haven't blown a lot of leads, actually. Pittsburgh and this game are the two games. Some of it is that we do wear down a little bit. Paul Harris is not a guard, never has been a guard. We're playing two freshmen guards, and they're going to make some mistakes in those situations. I'm more concerned about the amount of missed layups. You cannot win college basketball games when teams are pressuring you and you miss layups. Until Paul [Harris] turned it over on that play, we hadn't turned it over because of their pressure. Get the ball down, get it inside, and you have layups. We just didn't finish layups. You cannot miss layups and win college basketball games."
PLAYER QUOTES
Donte Greene, Fr., F
On what he was thinking during the last eight minutes of the game:
"I just didn't want to lose the game. I can t even remember what was going through my head, really. I was just ... I didn't want to lose the game, that's all."
On whether or not he is returning to Syracuse next year:
"I don't know yet. I don't know."
On the crowd at the Carrier Dome:
"I appreciate them a lot. I played 40 minutes ... however many minutes I played. It's hard sometimes, and the crowd definitely keeps you energized and I love Syracuse fans, and I just want to thank them for a great season."
On squandering a 22-point lead:
"Too many threes. We were still scoring, but we d get a lay-up and they d come down and get a three. Or we would miss a lay-up and they would come down and hit a three. It s easy to lose a 20 or 30-point lead doing that ... missing lay-ups and coming down and giving them threes. It s real easy for them to come back."
On the biggest regret of the season:
"Losing to UMass the first time. We lost the Pitt game close, but I mean, I feel it was just one win period that kept us out of the tournament, so I think it was UMass. UMass and Rhode Island."
Kristof Ongenaet, Jr., F
On Massachusetts second-half shooting:
"We needed to stop them at the three-point line, and we knew what their strengths and weaknesses were. One way or another, we just couldn't stop them."
On ending the season with a loss:
"It's really disappointing. But the fact of the matter is, you can't do anything about it. It's tough, it's really tough. I still can't believe it, but it happens."
On Syracuse's missed chances:
"Yeah, even the second-chance shots we missed, and the lay-ups. But I think eventually, if we would have been decent in the second half on defense, these lay-ups wouldn't even matter. We would have been in control like the first half, and we would have won the game easily. We didn't and we lost control of the game and they took advantage of it."
Paul Harris, So., G
On the Massachusetts comeback:
"I didn't know what happened ... it went fast. It was crazy. They wanted us to score, so they could go down and hit a three."
On how UMass climbed back in the game:
"I think it was basically that we weren't contesting a lot of shots. A couple of times, I was getting caught up. They were putting two good shooters on one side and I would go to one and the other one would be open and he would make it."
On the team's next step:
"We're just getting to the offseason, and everybody can get ready to prepare for next season and take a run at it next season."
