MHERST - The University of Massachusetts will debut new players and a new system against an old rival tonight when the Minutemen host American International College at 7:30 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
UMass fans will get their first real look at Travis Ford's preferred up-tempo style of basketball as well as six freshman he recruited to play that way.
Ford has repeatedly said that freshman wing Max Groebe is the newcomer who is most ready to make an impact. He'll be joined by combo guard Gary Correia, wing Matt Glass and big men Trey Lang, Papa Lo and Matt Hill who all will play their first game at the Mullins Center.
Ford hopes the game answers several questions about his team.
"How are we adjusting to the style of play? How are the freshman going to do under the lights? How much have they picked up in the last three to four weeks?" he said.
Ford planned to mix and match players quite a bit as he seeks effective lineup combinations.
"There's a lot of different lineups I'm going to look at, probably to the detriment of trying to win the game," Ford said. "I would like to see if I can play Max Groebe with Chris Lowe and Ricky Harris.
"Max usually plays with a big guard," Ford added. "When he plays the three, that's a big change for him defensively. How is it going to look with Luke (Bonner) and Dante (Milligan) in there together when they haven't played much together in practice."
In Ford's first two seasons, the Minutemen played one exhibition game and one controlled scrimmage against a Division I opponent. He was planning to do the same thing this year, but changed his mind and will play two exhibition games against Division II teams.
"I canceled our scrimmage because I thought it may be better to get these guys under lights in front of people," Ford said. "I thought it might be better to be in a game situation twice. Who knows if it's the right thing to do? But that's why I did it.
"This year we're using our exhibition games to figure out who we are, what we need to do, what we need to work on, who can play, who can't play and who can play together."
Ford said he is hoping for better results than in his players' two games among themselves.
"We've had two intrasquad scrimmages. I don't think we won either one of them," he said. "We've struggled rebounding and we don't guard very well at all. Offensively we've been fairly effective. There's a lot the freshmen have to learn fundamentally. It's just slow going.
"It's been fun," Ford continued. "It's been exciting working with these guys. I've enjoyed it tremendously. I really have.."
The Yellow Jackets were 16-13 last year and finished fifth in the Northeast 10. They last played UMass Dec. 29, 1987, when the Minutemen won 78-65. UMass leads the all-time series 20-14.
While the Minutemen are not as big as they have been in recent years, UMass will still dwarf AIC which has just two players taller than 6-foot-6.
In their second exhibition, the Minutemen will play Concordia at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Curry Hicks Cage.
JONES ELIGIBLE, OUT TONIGHT - Freshman Sedale Jones is officially eligible after the NCAA approved his paperwork. But the walk-on wing from Pittsfield only began practicing Monday.
"He has no idea what we're doing yet," said Ford, who has not seen enough to speculate whether Jones might make an impact this season. "I have no idea."
hough the regular season does not officially begin until next week, the Massachusetts men's basketball team will get two opportunities to test itself in exhibition play. The Minutemen host American International College at the Mullins Center tonight and will play Concordia at the Curry Hicks Cage Saturday.
UMass coach Travis Ford welcomes eight players to the program this season, including seven freshmen. The Minutemen graduated two of its best low-post threats in Stephane Lasme and Rashaun Freemen and seek to replace the combination's scoring and rebounding production in the paint.
Lasme was drafted in the second round of the 2007 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. He signed a rookie contract and made the final 15-man roster.
Recruiting Update
It's never too early to start recruiting in today's college game. Ford secured a verbal commitment from 6-foot-2 guard Aaron Cosby last week. Pledging to the recruiting class of 2010, Cosby is sophomore at a high school in Louisville, Ky.
However, the commitment is nonbinding, since Cosby is not eligible to sign a national letter of intent until November 2009.
Ford is also courting a highly touted prospect from Mount Vernon, N.Y. Forward Kevin Jones visited campus last weekend on an official recruiting visit. The 6-foot-8 forward is considered to be a top recruit by multiple basketball analysts.
At one point, as many as 10 schools were recruiting the forward, including Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Indiana and Ohio State.
Jones will not be eligible to make a commitment until the early signing period from Nov. 14 to 21. Kevin's older brother Gerard is also a former UMass football player Former UMass point guard Tiki Mayben will play for Binghamton University next season. Mayben will spend this year at Hudson Valley Community College trying to improve his academic status to become eligible for Division I basketball. The Troy, N.Y., native spent two seasons at UMass, though only one as an eligible player.
MHERST, Mass. - The new-style UMass Minutemen displayed their scoring and shooting prowess on Thursday night at the Mullins Center running past local foe American International, 103-66 in a preseason exhibition. The Minutemen hit 14 3-point field goals, which would be one shy of a school record in a regular-season game. The points total of 103 would also have set a Mullins Center single-game record as well.
Sophomore Ricky Harris scored a game-high 25 points. Senior Gary Forbes added 17 and junior Chris Lowe contributed 11 points and eight assists. Of UMass' class of seven freshmen, Max Groebe led the crew with 11 points.
UMass blew out the Yellow Jackets early in the second half, scoring 14 of the first 17 points of the half to lead 64-41 with 16 minutes left in the game.
The Minutemen showed off their fast-breaking 3-point shooting style late in the second half as they finished the first 20 minutes with seven bombs from beyond the arc. Forbes had 12 points in the first half and Harris added 11 as UMass led 50-38 at intermission.
UMass went on a 15-2 run midway through the first half to take a 33-23 lead with about seven minutes left in the half.
AIC jumped out early and led for the first eight minutes of the game, building a lead as large as seven points, leading 12-5 with 15:15 left in the first half.
UMass made a school-record 15 3-pointers at Temple in 1997 and attempted a record 31 vs. George Washington in 2003. The Minutemen scored the Mullins Center record 102 points against La Salle last season.
UMass will host Concordia (N.Y.) on Saturday night at the Curry Hicks Cage. The game will tip off at 9:30 p.m. following the UMass-Merrimack hockey game at the Mullins Center on Saturday.
oach Travis Ford on the First Half: In the first half, I was not happy with our intensity at all. With the style of play that we want to play we can't be passive by any stretch of imagination. We can't let making 3-point shots or not making 3-point shots determines how hard we play, and I thought we did that in the first half. We had Max Groebe come in and make a couple of shots that got us going.
Ford on Personnel: I wanted to play everybody, but Saturday I am not going to do it. I am going to stick with some rotations and see what looks good. I didn't get a good look at guys playing together, because I was shuffling to many guys in and out.
Ford on the upcoming season: We had a team meeting last night and I told them we weren't ready for today, but I have really enjoyed working with them, it has been fun, the style of play has been fun, its been exciting, but we just have to keep plugging at it and be humble achievers. We can win some games, we have some talented basketball players. We just have to keep grasping at what we want. Right now we are about 50/50.
Gary Forbes on the Exhibition Game: This game helped us to get the rust off. We are still practicing against each other, so this is our first opponent. We are still trying to get to know the system at a new pace from last season.
Forbes on Team Strategy: We thrive on shooting a bunch of threes. To do that, we have to move the ball around to get open shots. In the second half we were able to move the ball around and create open shots. We have a tough conditioning regimen to play the way we want to play. We want to play hard for 40 minutes up and down. Last year we were kind of methodical in the way we played. This year we are thriving on shooting 25-30 threes a game and we have to get the ball up and down the court.
Max Groebe on Shooting: I feel comfortable shooting right now and I am just trying to have fun out there. Coach Ford just told me to be loose and play hard.
MHERST - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team served notice Thursday night that the school record for 3-pointers attempted and made in a game are in jeopardy.
The Minutemen hoisted and launched all night, 35 in all from behind the line, which would have been a record if the game counted. Fourteen of them dropped in (one short of the record), enough to run American International College off the floor 103-66 in exhibition action at the Mullins Center.
The score sheet had 11 different Minutemen attempting shots from 3-point range, although the general consensus was that Papa Lo was incorrectly credited with someone else's missed attempt as the rangy rookie rarely strayed far from the post. Lo, Trey Lang, Dante Milligan and the walk-ons were the only ones not to attempt a 3-pointer.
UMass coach Travis Ford said everyone else can fire away. "Everybody else has the green light to shoot them," Ford said. "Fire them up there and see what happens."
Ricky Harris, who showed glimpses of potential last year, Thursday offered a willingness to shoulder some of the scoring load vacated by his graduated former teammates.
The sophomore wing led UMass with 25 points. He hit five of 10 3-point attempts and nine of 15 shots.
"He's a prolific scorer. We knew he could score, but we need to get him to play all out all the time," Ford said. "But he can score."
![]() Max Groebe launches one of his seven 3-point attempts, this over AIC's Ryan Leak. |
The abundance of made threes helped hide some problems. Despite being much bigger than the Yellow Jackets, the Minutemen outrebounded them by just 40-32 and Ford was frustrated with that effort.
Ford said he does not believe his team's defensive effort would hold up against better opponents either.
"Usually you fall back on rebounding and defense and those were two things that were very much lacking in our basketball team tonight," Ford said. "We're not a physical basketball team and that showed in our rebounding tonight...
"Rather than figure out how to become physical, we're going to try to camouflage that and do something to negate that. We're going to have to trap more," he added.
Senior captain Gary Forbes said he expects UMass to get better.
"This game just kind of helped us get the rust out," said Forbes who had 17 points and five assists. "We're just learning to play with these new guys, play a new system and play as a team."
The Minutemen open the regular season at 4:15 p.m. Nov. 9 against Cal Poly at the BTI Tip-Off Tournament in Iowa.
STARTERS - Ford went with this lineup of veterans to start the game: Forbes, Harris, Milligan (10 points), Etienne Brower (10 points, five rebounds) and Chris Lowe (11 points, eight assists).
NEXT UP - The Minutemen will return to their old haunts at 9:30 p.m. Saturday with their final exhibition game against Concordia at Curry Hicks Cage.
Ford said he wasn't happy with himself and the substitutions he used in Thursday's game and he plans to adjust that Saturday.
"I'm going to stick with some combinations to see what looks good. I was shuffling too many guys in and out," he said.
UMass is promoting the game with a retro theme encouraging fans to wear old-style clothes for a chance to win prizes.
MISCELLANEOUS - Milligan took an elbow in the face early in the first half and came out of the game, but showed no ill effects when he returned.
UMass opened its public address announcer's position to audition, but George Miller, who handled the chores last year after Jack O'Neill died, was hired to continue in that role.

merican International did everything it could to slow down the Massachusetts men's basketball last night at the Mullins Center in exhibition play. But The Minutemen outlasted and outran AIC for a 103-66 victory.
UMass finishes its exhibition schedule Saturday against Concordia at the Curry Hicks Cage.
"We got off to a slow start tonight, but it didn't really concern me," Ford said. "I knew we'd hit our spurt at some point."
UMass coach Travis Ford - intent on showing off his team's fast-paced style of basketball - encouraged his Minutemen to push the ball up the court. The team took every advantage of fast break opportunities - with the intention of creating open 3-point shots.
In the second half, the team focused on turning defensive rebounds and AIC turnovers into easy baskets underneath the hoop.
Ford acknowledges that his team won't command the front court as it did last season and will rely on a fast-paced style of play and strong shooting ability to win games.
"We're not a physical basketball team and it showed on the rebounding end tonight," Ford said. "We didn't play nearly as fast as I wanted to. And we actually didn't shoot the ball as well as we've been shooting it."
With seven freshmen added to this year's squad, it was also the first chance for Ford to experiment with different combinations on the court.
"It confused me I didn't really get a good look at guys," Ford said about his frequent substitutions. "I wanted to play everybody, but I really couldn't do it. Saturday night I'll stick with some rotations and see what looks good. [Tonight] I was shuffling too many guys in and out."
AIC kept the score close through the first 13 minutes, as the Minutemen struggled to make their 3-point attempts - at that point, shooting 29 percent.
But once the UMass 3-point threats started to get hot, the Yellow Jackets simply couldn't keep pace. The Maroon and White ended the first half with 18 total 3-point attempts, making seven.
Starting shooting guard Ricky Harris shot 5-of-10 from 3-point range and made several transition lay-ups. The sophomore paced the Minutemen with 25 points and five steals.
From downtown
At Midnight Madness a few weeks ago, Ford said that his team would shoot a lot of 3-pointers this season.
If last night's exhibition is any indication, that may be an understatement.
The Minutemen hoisted up 18 shots from beyond the arc in the first half alone and finished the contest with 35 attempts. They hit on 14 of them, good for 40 percent. Both Forbes and Max Groebe came out strong, as the pair hit on its first two tries. Ricky Harris was cold to start, but his shot began to fall as he connected on 5-of-10 from deep.
"Our three-point shot can be a very demoralizing weapon at times," Ford said after the game.
Just about everyone who played shot at least once from the perimeter, with seven of the 11 players who attempted a 3-pointer connecting at least once.
Game trends
Ford had his team play pressure defense, using a full-court press for much of the game. The strategy paid off, as the defense forced the Yellow Jackets into 13 turnovers in each half. Many of those turnovers resulted in quick and easy UMass baskets.
Chris Lowe had a strong exhibition performance for the Minutemen running the point, driving into the lane and finding the open teammate. He played at a fast pace for much of the game, giving the Yellow Jackets problems defending the up-tempo UMass offense. Lowe led all players with eight assists, and the team finished with 26 on the night - compared to 11 turnovers.
Harris was equally as impressive, exploding for 25 points - with 14 coming in the second half. He anticipated Yellow Jacket passes all game long, coming up with five steals and two easy breakaway baskets All five starters scored in double figures, as did Groebe, who scored 11 off the bench Dante Milligan was elbowed in the face early in the second half and remained down for a minute before Ford helped him up. He appeared fine, just shaken up, and retuned to action Papa Lo drew huge ovations for an emphatic block midway through the second half Eleven different Minutemen scored in the game Sedale Jones was the only eligible player who did not play in the exhibition. Jones recently became eligible after his paperwork was approved by the NCAA.
