MHERST, Mass. - On the night UMass unveiled the banners celebrating the 2006-07 Atlantic 10 Regular-Season title and the 2007 NIT appearance, the Minutemen topped Yale, 89-80, in a hot-shooting contest at the Mullins Center. Both teams shot over 50% from the floor with UMass at 53 and Yale at 51 percent. The Minutemen move to 3-1, Yale is now 1-1.
Sophomore Ricky Harris led UMass with 23 points. Senior Dante Milligan scored a career-high 17 points along with seven rebounds and three blocks. Classmate Gary Forbes netted 19 points, his fourth game in a row reaching double-digits, and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Senior Etienne Brower poured in 12 for UMass' fourth player in double-figures, he also had five assists.
Yale's Caleb Holmes led three Bulldogs in double-figures as he netted 23. Matt Kyle tallied 20.
Harris' steal and dunk with 2:05 left in regulation gave the Minutemen an 84-75 lead, the biggest of the game, sealing the victory.
The Minutemen built the lead to 68-60 on a reverse lay-up by Milligan off a pass from Tony Gaffney with 11:42 left in regulation. A Harris 3-pointer with 14 minutes left in regulation gave UMass a 64-59 advantage.
The Minutemen led 48-44 at halftime shooting 53 percent in the first half. But Yale was even better from the floor, at a 57 percent shooting rate led by Kyle who had 13 points. Forbes was UMass' top scorer in the first half with 13.
Milligan scored on successive baskets to give UMass a 46-39 lead with just over a minute left in the first half. The Minutemen took a 38-35 lead on a 3-pointer by Brower off a slick pass from Lowe with just under four minutes left in the first half.
Yale held a 35-30 lead as the Bulldogs made 15 of their first 23 shots in the game with Kyle scoring 11 points in the first 14 minutes of action.
Both teams came out blazing from the field. At the time of the first media timeout (7:35 into the game), the teams stood tied at 20-20. UMass made nine of its first 15 shots while Yale began the making eight of its first 12 shots.
UMass hosts Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
NOTES
* UMass won its fifth home opener at the Mullins Center in a row. All-time UMass is 14-2 in openers at Mullins.
* UMass is 23-4 in its last 27 home games over the last three seasons. Travis Ford has coached his teams at 35 wins in its last 40 games at home spanning both Eastern Kentucky and UMass.
* Dante Milligan tallied a career-high 17 points. His former high was 11 against Saint Joseph's (1/11/06), Milligan also had a career-high in field goals made (eight) and field goals attempted (nine).
* Etienne Brower scored in double-figures for the third time in four games this season with 12. Brower's career-high last season was eight points.
* With his 12 points, Brower is now just 19 from surpassing his entire scoring total for all of last season when he had 59 total points.
* Ricky Harris continued his torrid start with 23. It was his ninth-career game with 10 or more points. Harris also had a career-high five steals.

UMass Coach Travis Ford On The Game:
I'm just happy to get a win tonight. I give Yale a lot of credit; they played a terrific basketball game. They have some good basketball players you have to give them a lot of credit. We are excited to win this game, but on the other hand we were a tired basketball team before the game started. We've been though a lot in the last week. Our key guys a banged up and I was very pleased that we wont the game. Very pleased that we found a way to win on a night where we were fatigued. Early in the game, the game was really going in our favor, the way the pace was going but the problem was we were executing our offense extremely well, but they were scoring on the other end so it kind of negates everything we were doing. Normally the pace of the game was going really well for us but again we were probably as tired as they were. Our big guys need a rest, we have a big game on Saturday.
On Dante Milligan:
Dante gave us a huge lift; he made some big baskets at crucial times. One of those three guys have got to step up, one of them has got to give us good minutes. I pulled the press off a little bit because we were fatigued. Our bench really wasn't any better, it was worse actually. I had to shorten our bench, which wasn't good. Guys like Matt Glass, Papa Lo, and Max Groebe, I need to get those guys those minutes. Matt Glass especially, he's playing real good basketball right now.
