NDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Only three days after upsetting Syracuse at the Carrier Dome, the UMass men's basketball team got a taste of their own medicine vs. IUPUI, falling to the Jaguars, 89-77, at the IUPUI Gymnasium on Saturday evening. Despite owning a 43-32 lead at the half, the Minutemen ran out of gas in the second, getting outscored 57-34. Two IUPUI runs in that span (16-5 and 14-5) were UMass' downfall. The Minutemen fall to 5-2, while IUPUI improves to 5-2. UMass is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 8, when they host Marist at 7:30 p.m. in a game to be played at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
IUPUI, predicted to win the Summit League, play in one of the smallest venues in Division I. Called "The Jungle", the seating capacity is 1,215. The Jaguars also feature one of the league's best players and who many consider an NBA prospect, George Hill.
Hill wouldn't disappoint, putting up 30 points, 26 of which came in the second half. Jon Avery chipped in with 25, and also turned it up after halftime, scoring 20 himself.
Four Minutemen recorded double-figure point totals. Ricky Harris scored 23, the second consecutive game and fourth time this season scoring over 20 points. Gary Forbes added 12, Luke Bonner scored a career-high 11, and Dante Milligan chipped in with 10.
UMass shot well from the field, hitting 50% of their field goals and 9-of-25 three pointers.
After trailing by 11 at the half, the Jaguars came out strong in the second with a 16-5 run to tie the score at 48 at the second media timeout. Avery and Hill scored all of IUPUI's points in that span, with ten and six points, respectively.
The Minutemen ended the run with a Harris slam dunk to make it 50-48. IUPUI took their first lead of the half, and first since it was 19-17, after a pair of free throws to make it 51-50. After another two-point field goal, they had their biggest lead of the game up to that point, at 53-50.
The game continued to go back and forth with neither team holding greater than a five-point lead. Along with being tied at 48, the score was also tied at 53, 55 and 62.
IUPUI eventually upped their lead to eight, 75-67. Harris made three free throws to cut the lead to five and it looked the Minutemen would claw back into the game. But that was the closest the Minutemen would get. The Jaguars responded with a 14-5 run to close out the win.
In the first half, IUPUI scored first, but the Minutemen responded with an 11-0 run. The Jaguars continued to chip away at the lead until they eventually retook the advantage, 19-17.
UMass wasn't fazed as they responded with a run to distance themselves.
The Minutemen had their largest lead of the first half going into the locker room. In the final minute, UMass upped their lead to 43-32. Forbes hit a three-pointer as time expired for the 11-point advantage. It was the team's biggest lead of the first half; the previous high had been nine.
Milligan led the team with 10 points in the first half. Lowe had nine, while Bonner and Forbes had seven. UMass shot 18-of-32 from the field, and 5-of-11 for three. IUPUI was 11-of-27, and 4-of-8 from behind the arc.

*This was the first-ever meeting between UMass and IUPUI.
*UMass falls to 0-6 all-time against teams from Indiana.
*Redshirt-junior Luke Bonner tied his career high with 11 points. The last time he scored 11 was vs. St. Bonaventure on Feb. 21, 2007.
*Sophomore Ricky Harris scored over 20 points for the second-consecutive game. He has already reached the 20-point plateau four times this season after not reaching 20 as a freshman.
*One game after tying his career-high for assists (9), Chris Lowe made a bid to tie or break his previous high. He fell one short, finishing with eight.
*After IUPUI scored the first basket, UMass responded with an 11-0 run. It marked the second consecutive game that the Minutemen responded with a run after giving up the first basket of the game. Syracuse scored the first basket on Wed. before UMass made a 9-0 run.
