Forbes And Harris Lead UMass Past Toledo, 68-61
Gary Forbes pours in 25 while Ricky Harris adds 17 for Minutemen

MHERST, Mass. - Behind an 11-0 run to start the second half, and a combined 42 points by Gary Forbes and Ricky Harris, the UMass men's basketball team was able to fend off a late Toledo rally to hold on to a 68-61 win at the Mullins Center on Saturday evening. Forbes finished with 25 while Harris had 17, and Lowe chipped in with 11. After a slow start, the Minutemen (8-2) made a run to reverse a six point deficit to a two point lead at the half. It carried into the second-half, as the Minutemen would never relinquish the advantage. UMass now enjoys one week off before hosting Central Connecticut State next Saturday, Dec. 22, in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Mullins Center.
UMass finished 19-of-45 from the floor while Toledo shot 24-of-62. Forbes was 11-of-12 from the free throw line.
Forbes finished with 25 points and Harris had 17. The two have hit double figures in every game thus far. Lowe added 11. Papa Lo had a strong game, finishing with two points and a career-high two blocked shots.
Jonathan Amos, Ridley Johnson, and Tyrone Kent combined for 49 of the Rockets' 61 points. Amos and Johnson had 18, while Kent added 13.
After taking a two-point halftime lead, the Minutemen came out of the locker room with a vengeance, extending the lead to 13 via an 11-0 run. Luke Bonner capped it off with a layup off a fast break to give UMass the 42-29 advantage with 16:44 remaining. After missing its first five field goal attempts of the half, Toledo got one with a Bingham layup to end the scoreless drought.
Toledo made a mini run of their own, cutting a 13 point deficit to eight, 46-38. After Harris hit a pair of free throws, Johnson hit his second three-pointer in as many possessions to make it 48-41 with 13:06 remaining.
Gaffney hit his first three-pointer of the season with 11:22 remaining to give UMass the 53-43 advantage. The Minutemen continued to extend their lead. Lowe hit a layup off a fast break for a 13-point lead at 60-47, their largest of the game.
Toledo responded as a pair of three-pointers by Amos and Kent turned a 12-point UMass advantage to six with 4:40 left.
After a Jerrah Young basket with 1:52 left, UMass' lead was only five. Lowe responded with a clutch three-pointer on the ensuing possession to give the Minutemen breathing room, 65-57.
Kent followed with four consecutive points, capped off by a dunk on an offensive rebound, to cut the lead to only four, 65-61 with 54 seconds left. The Rockets fouled down the stretch and UMass hit their free throws to ice the win.
Both teams struggled from the field to start the first half. After 2:14, and seven combined possessions with no score, Amos got Toledo on the board first, hitting 1-of-2 free throws to give the Rockets an early 1-0 lead.
UMass scored its first points on its seventh possession, when Lowe hit a pair of free throws to give the Minutemen the 2-1 lead with 16:52 remaining.
Bingham picked up the first field goal of the game on Toledo's ensuing possession. He followed with another three-pointer to up the Rockets' lead to 7-2.
The Minutemen picked up their first field goal when Harris hit a floater from inside the free throw line following a Dante Milligan offensive rebound.
The teams continued to play even, going back and forth. After a Toledo three-pointer to make it 12-9, UMass answered back with a nifty play of their own. Harris made a backdoor cut and took a Lowe pass for the easy slam dunk with 9:51 remaining.
Amos continued his strong start for Toledo with four consecutive points to make it 16-11. After a floater, Amos took a pass off a steal and went up strong for the dunk over the UMass defense.
Matt Glass made an immediate impact off the bench. On his first offensive possession, Harris kicked it out to Glass in the corner, who hit a three-pointer with 6:04 remaining to cut Toledo's lead to 23-20.
Lo entered the contest and made a significant impact for the second game in a row. He made a pass to spring Harris for the easy dunk to tie the score at 27, the first tie since it was 9-9.
Lo followed with a tremendous block, that got the crowd on its feet. He cleaned up a Forbes missed three-pointer and hit the easy layup to give UMass the 29-27 lead, their first lead of the game. For Lo, it was his first point scored since the Northern Illinois game on Nov. 10.
UMass went into the locker room up 31-29. Toledo was led by a trio of scorers, who combined for 27 of their 29 halftime points. Amos had 11, Johnson had 10, and Bingham had six. For UMass, Forbes led the way with 12 points, while Harris had eight.
NOTES
* Gary Forbes was presented the ball which he scored his 1000th career point with in a pregame ceremony. Forbes reached 1,000 career points back on Nov. 11 at Northern Iowa. Forbes now has 1,165 in his career including 645 at UMass.
* Forbes scored 25 and reached 25 points or more for the third time this season and fourth in his career.
* Forbes reached double-figures for the 10th time this season and now has 14 games in a row with 10 or more dating to last season. Forbes has scored at least 12 in every game this season.
* Forbes has 20 or more points in seven of 10 games this season and 16 times in his career.
* Ricky Harris has scored in double-figures in all 10 games this season, just like Forbes. He had 17 against Toledo.
* Chris Lowe, who had 23 and 17 in his last two games, reached double-figures again with 11. It was his fifth game in double-figures this season.
* Papa Lo had his second career basket with a field goal in the first half.
* Averaging nearly 10 3-pointers per game, to rank in the top 20 nationally, UMass missed its first six 3-pointers before Matt Glass made UMass' first trey with 6:00 left in the first half as UMass hit just two in the first half.
* UMass beat Toledo for the first time after losing to them twice in 1962 and 1979.

Travis Ford on Toledo: They looked like a team that prepared for us for a week and we look like a team that just came off a big win. With that said, we did win the game. ...We didn't play the way we were capable of playing but that comes back to Toledo, they made us play their style of basketball not ours. They played four legitimate guards, not just four small guys. They broke our trap on our press easily and we saw that from the very beginning of the game.
Travis Ford on Papa Lo: Papa was the difference in the game. He only got six minutes of play but he brought energy. His energy made all the difference. His defensive presence is something we need, its something we lack. You know Papa is going to play well when he gets in there, he has great energy.
Travis Ford on Chris Lowe: It's always great to have a person who wants the ball in the late minutes. He has been through a lot and seen a lot. He is a very old junior but I think all his experience is what puts him in the position to be at his best and to win basketball games.
Travis Ford on the freshman: Guys like Matt Glass, Max Grove, and Gary Correia, and Papa Lo need to get more minutes. The BC game was so tight I didn't get a chance to put them in. Tonight I wanted the guys in the game to play themselves out of it. I kept thinking if I left them in there they would come out of it.
Travis Ford on the team's rebounding: I don't look at the rebounding anymore. The column I look at is the offensive rebounds the other team is getting. We want to keep them in single digits, seven or eight. We're realistic. Double-digits are not good. We were just a second late on a lot of stuff tonight...just a second late.
