UMass Celebrates Ford's Birthday With 70-61 Win Over Boston University
Minutemen improve to 10-2, best start since 1995-96 Final Four season

MHERST, Mass. - The backcourt trio of Gary Forbes, Ricky Harris, and Chris Lowe combined for 51 points to give UMass head coach Travis Ford a 70-61 victory over Boston University on his 38th birthday Saturday night at the Mullins Center. Forbes finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds as he recorded his third double-double of the season. Lowe and Harris added 14 points each. Forbes and Harris have scored in double-figures in all 12 games this season. Carlos Strong led the Terriers with 17 points. With the win, UMass improves to 10-2, its best start since opening the 1995-96 season 26-0 on its way to the Final Four.
The Minutemen came out firing, jumping out to an 11-4 lead and holding the Terriers without a field goal for the first 6:48 of the game. UMass held a 15-11 lead with 11:13 left in the opening half when Forbes sparked a 24-4 run over the next 7:38 with eight points. Harris finished off the run with a dunk off the break that resulted in a Terriers timeout at 3:35 with UMass leading, 37-15.
The Minutemen took a 44-25 lead into the locker room, with Forbes and Harris leading the way with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Forbes achieved his double-double in the first half, grabbing 10 rebounds. UMass shot 44.1% (15-34) for the half, while BU shot 26.2% (10-38). Papa Lo led the UMass defense with four of the team's nine blocks in the opening 20 minutes.
Both teams struggled to find their shooting touch in the second half, with BU outscoring UMass, 10-9 over the first 7:37 of the second half. Corey Lowe layup with 6:42 left in the game capped off a 12-3 Terriers run and cut UMass' lead to single-digits, 56-47. BU then used a 9-0 run over a two minute span to cut UMass' lead three, 62-59, with 1:35 remaining. Chris Lowe would then score four-straight points on a floater in the lane with 1:13 left and two free throws with 57 seconds left to extend the lead back to seven. Harris and Forbes combined to make 4-of-4 free throws in the final 14 seconds to seal the victory, 70-61.
The Minutemen shot 36.8% (21-57) for the game, while the Terriers shot 33.3% (24-72). BU held a slight edge on the boards with 46 rebounds to UMass' 43. The Minutemen blocked 14 shots in the game, led by Lo's five.
NOTES
* Head Coach Travis Ford celebrated his 38th birthday with the 70-61 win over BU.
* UMass moved to 10-2 marking its best start since the 1995-96 Final Four season when the Minutemen started 26-0. Last year, UMass was 9-2 before losing its 12th game.
* Gary Forbes posted a double-double - in the first half alone (15 points, 10 rebounds) for his third double-double of the season and sixth of his career as he finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds.
* Gary Forbes scored 25 to reach double-figures for the 12th time in as many games in 2007-08. He has 16 games in a row with 10 or more. It was Forbes eighth game this season with 20 or more and 17th in his career.
* Forbes was in double-figure rebounds for the eighth time in his career and third this season.
* Ricky Harris has also reached double-figures in every game this season with 16.
* Chris Lowe was in double-figures for the sixth time this season and 15th in his career with 14.
* A game after having 18 blocked shots vs. Central Connecticut, UMass had 14 giving it 32 in its last two games. Papa Lo had five blocks after six against CCSU.
* Playing against the team which they began their collegiate careers with, Etienne Brower (1 point and 9 rebounds) and Tony Gaffney (3 points and 2 rebounds) combined for three points and 11 rebounds.
* UMass held BU without a field goal for the first 6:48 of the game as the Terriers missed their first seven shots before an Ibrahim Konate lay-up with 13:12 left in the half as UMass built an 11-2 lead.
* The crowd of 4,482 was the largest at the Mullins Center this season.

Travis Ford on the win:
"I'm happy we won the game. Give BU credit, they never gave up and kept fighting all game. It was a tale of two halves. I was very disappointed with the second half we were not competitive. From this point forward we need to be better. We should not worry about shot selection. We have to keep playing the way we play and play hard all game. It is a learning process, I was not pleased with the second half."
Ford on UMass' defense:
"As a whole, when you look at the percentages, its not that bad, but its a little deceiving. Our defense was not that bad. It was our offense not our defense that was wrong. Our offense effected our defense. We quit playing."
Ford on playing once a week for three weeks in a row:
"Playing once a week, we have not played very well for the last several games. It has been a sparodic schedule. It takes a toll not getting in a rhythm. Putting that aside, now we turn around and are playing all the time. We need to turn it around. Its going to be tought now."
Ford on the poor second half:
"That second half really got my attention. Our talk after the game was getting their attention that we were doing the wrong things. If you liked that second half than this is not the sport for you. ... Give BU credit. Tyler Morris is good. Don't be surprised if they are at the top of the league. We need to be strong mentally. We are going to sit down as a coaching staff and find some different buttons to push."
Ford on the upcoming games:
"We have some very, very good tests coming. If you like UMass or you like basketball or both than Wednesday night, this is the place to be, the Mullins Center. It is going to be a very exciting game with Houston and I urge all fans to come out to see UMass and see what should be a great basketball game."
