MHERST - With Atlantic-10 play beginning next weekend, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team will try to end its up-and-down nonconference season on a high note Saturday against Vanderbilt.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said the out-of-league slate with seven road games, including six in the Central time zone, was not easy for his young team which is 5-7 heading into Saturday's game at 5 p.m. Mullins Center. It will be broadcast on CBS College Sports.
"It was difficult," Kellogg said. "To go on the road at any point is difficult in college basketball, especially with a team that's getting better and learning and not real experienced in what they're trying to do.
"It has been difficult, but they've gotten better," he added.
Tuesday's 80-54 loss at Houston was a setback, but Kellogg was pleased with how his team bounced back from it.
"They came back to practice ready to go. They're looking forward to getting back to the home environment," he said. "It should be a good test for us. (The Commodores are) a very good team. We're excited to get back on the court and play those guys."
UMass senior big man Tony Gaffney agreed.
"It was obviously awful to lose like that and play that way" Tuesday, he said. "It could be good #cause it will keep us from getting content. We had a four-game winning streak, but we haven't done anything yet.
"It probably has guys hungrier and ready to get back on the court" Saturday, he said.
Vanderbilt (10-3) arrives in Amherst on a five-game winning streak, but is still somewhat unproven with only one win (South Florida) over a big-conference opponent. The three losses came against Illinois, Illinois-Chicago and Georgia Tech.
Sophomore big man A.J. Ogilvy leads the Commodores with 16.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-11, 250-pound Australian, who had 25 points and 11 rebounds against UMass last year, missed Vanderbilt's 84-55 win Wednesday over St. Francis with a foot injury but is expected to play Saturday.
"He's powerful around the basket," Kellogg said. "We've only seen someone like that one other time against Kansas in (Cole) Aldrich). We did everything in our power to stop him."
Gaffney said playing Kansas and Aldrich was good preparation for Saturday.
"From what I remember from last year, (Ogilvy) is a beast. He's going to be one of the best big men we play all year," he said.
Gaffney added that having 7-foot-1, 245-pound Luke Bonner back would help. "Ogilvy and Aldrich have similar bodies. They're similar players," Gaffney said. "Against Kansas, we didn't have Luke. Having Luke back for this game is going to be huge, not only on the defensive end, but on the offensive end as well."
A pair of freshmen have made immediate impacts for coach Kevin Stallings' squad. Jeffery Taylor, a native of Sweden, is averaging 12.9 points and 6.2 rebounds, which is second on the team in both categories, while Brad Tinsley is averaging 10.5 points and 2.9 assists.
LEAMAN LEGACY/1960s CELEBRATION - This is the annual Leaman Legacy Game. A portion of the ticket sales goes to the Leaman Legacy Fund for UMass athletic scholarships. It honors beloved former coach and broadcaster Jack Leaman who died in 2004.
Fittingly, the game also is the second celebration night as part of the season-long 100 Seasons of UMass Basketball festivities. Players from 1960-69, many of whom played for Leaman, will be honored.
Among those expected to attend are Ray Ellerbrook of Northampton, who scored 1,224 point in his UMass career from 1967 to 1970 and is currently the executive director of Look Park in Florence.
Also expected to attend are Jim Babyak, Peter Bernard, Dennis Chapman, Chuck Demers (trainer), Joe DiSarcina, John Dreyer, Tim Edwards, Robert Eichorn, Gary Gasperack, Jim Girotti, Paul Gullicksen, John Lisack, Bob Murphy, Richard Perkins, Ed Rubin (manager), Dick Samuelson, Rich Starsiak, Frank Stewart and Billy Tindall.
NO STATUS CHANGE FOR WIGGINS - Kellogg said there's no change in the status of Doug Wiggins, who is currently suspended indefinitely from the Minutemen. On Tuesday in Eastern Hampshire District Court, Wiggins submitted to facts sufficient for a guilty finding on a charge of breaking and entering for a misdemeanor resulting from a Nov. 22 incident. His case was continued without a finding for six months and if he stays out of legal trouble, the charge would be cleared from his record.
Wiggins, a transfer from Connecticut, is sitting out this season under NCAA regulations.
HARRIS CLIMBING - If Ricky Harris scores 14 points (he's averaging 19.8 per game), the junior guard could jump three spots on the UMass career scoring list. Harris (1,039) is No. 35 on the list and Charlton Clarke (1,041), Dana Dingle (1,043) and Alex Eldridge (1,053) are in reach.

MHERST, Mass. - Vanderbilt took advantage of UMass' worst shooting performance of the season, defeating the Minutemen, 78-48, on Saturday afternoon at the Leaman Legacy Game at the Mullins Center. The Commodores led by five at the half, but outscored UMass, 50-25, in the second half, while the Minutemen shot 28.6 percent from the floor for the game. UMass falls to 5-8 on the season, while Vanderbilt improves to 11-3.
The Minutemen finished the game 16-for-56 from the floor, including 4-for-23 from 3-point range. Vanderbilt shot 28-for-61 (45.9%) and 8-for-20 from behind the arc.
Chris Lowe led UMass with 14 points, while Ricky Harris added 12. Vanderbilt was led by A.J. Ogilvy's 14 points, while four Commodores reached double-digits.
Proceeds from Saturday's game benefited the Leaman Legacy Fund, in honor of UMass' legendary coach from 1966-1979 who passed away in 2004. His family along with members from the 1960s era UMass teams were honored at halftime.
UMass started the game ice-cold, missing its first six shots from the field, as Vanderbilt built an early 7-2. Gaffney finally scored the Minutemen's first field goal 5:29 into the game on a breakaway dunk following a steal.
The Commodores' lead reached 10 at the 10:44 mark of the half when Brad Tinsley and George Drake hit back-to-back 3-pointers, making it 17-7.
The Minutemen were able to chip away at the lead, thanks to 10 points from Harris, who led all scorers in the first half. Lowe's floater with eight seconds left cut the Vanderbilt lead to five, 28-23, at halftime.
UMass' 28.6 percent (8-28) shooting in the first half, including 1-for-7 from 3-point range, was its poorest shooting half of the season. The Minutemen held Vanderbilt to 37 percent shooting over the first 20 minutes and forced eight turnovers.
Lowe's layup to start the second half got UMass within three points, its closest since the game was 7-4, but Vanderbilt put together a 17-3 run over 3:35 to open up a 45-28 lead. Tinsley hit two 3's, while A.J. Ogilvy scored six points of his own during the run.
The Commodores put together a 12-1 run between the 13:38 and 8:33 marks, upping the lead to 26, 59-33, with 8:34 remaining.
A Lowe 3-pointer at 8:02 ended the Vandy run and gave him 12 of the Minutemen's 13 points in the half up to that point.
The Minutemen return to action next Saturday when they open A-10 play by hosting Dayton at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
Head Coach Derek Kellogg's general comments
We came out in the second half and executed early, and did a few good things. Then, it all unraveled pretty quickly, and I burned a couple of our timeouts in a timely fashion. We took terrible, quick shots early in the possession. We didn't sprint back on defense. We really didn't execute the game plan at all in the second half. They did a nice job of going to a 3-2 zone. Teams that have previously done that, we got great shots and knocked down threes. The last two games, I don't think our threes have dropped in there at a good rate. Some of that is we are playing better teams, but some of that is that you have to be tough and make a shot. If you are giving up a couple inches at each position, and a little bit of size, how do you overcome that? With toughness, with grit, with passion, with speed and quickness. While we did that in the first half, and a little in the second half, I thought that got away from us.
Coach Kellogg on game plan
Our game plan was to run the dribble-drive and get some plays in the paint. If not, look for the open three. I'm not a big fan of passing the ball around the perimeter and then shoot a three. I like to get the ball into the paint, and then kick out for threes or look into the post, which is something we need to work on. At some point, we just passed the ball around and guys shot threes, which I am confident will not happen again.
Coach Kellogg on seniors
I like the fact that their good kids and they are trying to keep their heads up. I want them to do even more and take over even more. Chris Lowe played great at times this evening, and not as good as he's capable at some points. I think as he continues to improve, our team will follow him. Tony Gaffney was not totally on his game tonight, but he said his knees were bothering him a little bit. Luke Bonner is trying to be a leader on this team. He is trying to get all the guys to follow him and continue to play better.
Chris Lowe on loss to Vanderbilt
It is going to burn, but as a veteran, point guard, and captain, I have to stay focused. I have been through a lot in my four years of college basketball, so I am just going to stay positive and not let this affect me. The last two games, we came out sluggish and have not hit many shots, but that is not the reason we are losing. We are getting out-toughed. It is about toughness now. It is about pride. I think we all need to look ourselves in the mirror, and ask ourselves if we really want to be here. We have 16-17 more games of the season.
Chris Lowe on frustration
It is very frustrating because we thought we turned a corner. I think we got back to the things we were doing when we started 1-6. Everything will get nipped in the bud tomorrow. I promise one thing, we will be a different team when we get out on the court Saturday. i know that for a fact.
Head Coach Kevin Stallings' general comments
We pride ourselves on being pretty good defensively. We have been okay defensively so far this season and when we rebound along with our rebounding, we usually have some success. I do not know if our defense is frustrating people or not, I really couldn't tell you. Hopefully, we do a good job of challenging shots and keeping the ball out of the lane. That is the way our defense is designed.
Coach Stallings on game plan
We were not surprised. We were a little disappointed in the way that we fouled too much. We thought we fouled a couple of times necessarily on their penetration and we didn't get our support on defense where it needed to be. I was not surprised at all. I hope we had something to do with taking away from those threes. We certainly didn't want Harris, Bonner, or Gurley to get open threes against us. Hopefully, the lack of threes had something to do with our defense. I thought the zone was effective in the second half and I thought our man was good in the first half. We were pleased with how we played defensively.
Coach Stallings on Ogilvy
He is a great kid. He will get frustrated every once and a while, but when our team is having success, he is not worried about his stats. Throughout his career, he has been a second half player. If I was a better coach, I could get him to play in the first half, as he does in the second half.
MHERST - When the Vanderbilt men's basketball team is playing well, its opponents shoot poorly. The Commodores played very well Saturday because the University of Massachusetts could not hit anything.
For the second straight game, the Minutemen were on the short end of a big deficit as they finished their nonconference campaign with a 78-48 loss to Vanderbilt at the Mullins Center.
"We took terrible, quick bad shots on the offensive end and didn't sprint back on defense," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "We didn't execute the game plan at all in the second half."
Those shots hit the side, front and back of the rim, and sometimes no rim at all. The Minutemen missed long threes and dunks.
UMass (5-8) missed 40 shots in shooting 16-for-56, including 4-for-23 from 3-point range. With plenty of rebounds available, Vanderbilt (11-3) got most of them and outrebounded the Minutemen 48-28.
"I think when they make shots our guys tend to get a little more upbeat and play harder," Kellogg said. "I'm trying to get them to be able to win a basketball game when we're not making shots. That's my goal.
"In the games we've shot the ball well, we've played great," he added. "The games when we're not shooting the ball as well, we're not playing as well defensively."
After trailing 28-23 at halftime, Chris Lowe hit a driving layup to bring UMass within one possession right away in the second half. But a 13-1 Vanderbilt run early in the half ended any suspense quickly and the Commodores continued to pull away throughout the second half.
Few of the 5,698 fans were still in the Mullins Center when the final buzzer sounded.
"We came out in the second half and did a few good things, but it all unraveled pretty quickly," Kellogg said.
The Minutemen will try to shake off the back-to-back blowout losses as they begin conference play at 1 p.m. Saturday against Dayton at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.
The Commodores won despite a minimal impact early from sophomore center A.J. Ogilvy. The potential NBA prospect missed Vanderbilt's game Wednesday with a foot injury and played just 22 minutes against UMass. He finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, but most of his numbers came after the Commodores had already put the game out of reach.
Ogilvy's early woes were counteracted by Tony Gaffney's struggles. The Minuteman senior big man, whose surprise success has lifted UMass this year, was battling sore knees and a big Commodore frontcourt. Gaffney shot 1-for-10 from the field and had seven rebounds and three blocks.
Sophomore Anthony Gurley struggled as well with three points on 1-for-8 shooting.
Lowe led the Minutemen with 14 points. Ricky Harris added 12, but had just two in the second half.
Darshawn McClellan, Lance Goulbourne and Jermaine Beal each had 10 for Vanderbilt.
"The last two games we're coming out sluggish," Lowe said. "But that's not the reason we're losing. We're getting out-toughed. It's a question of toughness and pride. We have to look in the mirror and decide if we want to be here ...
"It's very frustrating because we thought we turned the corner," he added. "I think we got back to doing the things that got us to a 1-6 start. Everything will be nipped in the bud tomorrow. I promise it will be a different team when we get out on the court Saturday."

MHERST - Perhaps the University of Massachusetts Minutemen misread the schedule. Yesterday, they took on the Commodores of Vanderbilt University, but seemed to be prepared instead for the Commodores of Lionel Richie fame.
After all, they wound up turning the Mullins Center into their personal Brick House.
In a shooting display designed for wincing rather than winning, the Minutemen fired up all manner of bricks and lost, 78-48. It was equal-opportunity masonry as UMass hit 8 of 28 field goals in each half for 28.6 percent. The Minutemen clanged away from close range, midrange, and long range (4 for 23 from behind the arc). It would have been worse, except UMass hit its last four shots, most of them coming against Vanderbilt's walk-ons, one of whom didn't even have his name on his jersey.
All of that added up to UMass's second-worst home defeat at the Mullins Center, not quite measuring up (or down) to the 32-point loss to Temple in 2001.
"We took terrible, quick, bad shots on the offensive end, and didn't sprint back on defense," said first-year coach Derek Kellogg.
The former UMass point guard was particularly distressed at his team's inability to fight through a game of poor shooting. Good teams, he pointed out, are able to find a way even when the shots don't fall.
"We're just getting outtoughed the last couple of games," said senior point guard Chris Lowe, including Tuesday's 26-point loss at Houston.
Those two defeats, which closed out the nonconference portion of UMass's schedule at 5-8, seemed especially dispiriting. They came on the heels of a four-game winning streak that included a startling victory on the road against defending national champion Kansas.
"It's very frustrating because we thought we turned a corner," said Lowe, who led UMass yesterday with 14 points. "Everything will be nipped in the bud tomorrow. I promise we'll be a different team when we come out there next Saturday [in the Atlantic 10 opener against Dayton]."
To be sure, Vanderbilt deserves plenty of credit for the outcome. The 11-3 Commodores stifled the Minutemen with a man-to-man defense in the first half and a 3-2 zone in the second. They dominated UMass on the glass, outrebounding the Minutemen, 48-28.
After UMass cut the Vanderbilt lead to 28-25 with a layup by Lowe to open the second half, things became unglued. The Minutemen's frustration was apparent at both ends. On offense, they resorted to passing the ball around the perimeter and firing away. At one particularly galling moment defensively, they watched Lance Goulbourne gather in an inbounds pass some 30 feet from the hoop, and then drive powerfully into the paint, dunking over two UMass players. It was as if they were taking Vandy from a baby.
Moments later, the Vanderbilt lead peaked at 34.
A.J. Ogilvy led the Commodores with 14 points. Goulbourne was one of a trio of Vanderbilt players with 10.
Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings was gracious about the plight Kellogg faces in taking over the UMass program.
"It's tough your first year," he said. "You go in, you try to put your system in. I know they're not where they'd like to be. They're not quite in synch yet. I know they're a lot better than where that score ended up."
MHERST - In a season that has seen a six-game losing streak followed by four straight victories, it seems the UMass mens basketball team has mastered the art of the streak.
The Minutemen are now in the midst of a run of lopsided losses. Following an 80-54 defeat at Houston on Tuesday, UMass was dropped, 78-48, by Vanderbilt yesterday at the Mullins Center.
The game plan was to dribble-drive them and get the ball into the paint. At some point, we just passed the ball around the perimeter, said UMass coach Derek Kellogg, whose team fell to 5-8. Im pretty confident that that wont happen again.
The Commodores (11-3) held the lead throughout the first half, including a 28-23 advantage at intermission. In the second, they switched to a zone defense, forcing UMass to take a number of bad shots.
Chris Lowe, who accounted for 12 of the Minutemens first 13 points in the second half, started the half by sandwiching four points around a couple of shots by Vanderbilts Jermaine Beal and Jeffrey Taylor. But the Commodores followed that with three straight 3-pointers and a 13-1 run.
This is going to burn, but as a veteran point guard and captain, Ive got to go forward. Ill stay positive. Its about toughness and its about pride, Lowe said. Its very frustrating. I think we got back to doing the things that we didnt do in the beginning of the year to give us our 1-6 start.
Led by center A.J. Ogilvy, Vanderbilt outscored UMass in the half, 50-25. Ogilvy, who has scored in double digits in 45 out of 47 games in his two-year career, continued his own streak with a 14-point performance, 12 coming in the second half. He also added eight rebounds.
I was really proud of our teams defensive effort the entire game. I thought we fought their dribble penetration very well, Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings said. Both teams defenses were playing really well, but in the second half we got our transition game going.
Lowe (14 points) and Ricky Harris (12) led the Minutemen in scoring. Tony Gaffney, who is averaging double digits in scoring and rebounds, had just four points and seven boards to go along with three steals and three blocks.
Vanderbilt got 10-point performances from Lance Goulbourne (8 rebounds), Beal (6 rebounds) and Darshawn McClellan (5 rebounds).
The contest marks the end of non-conference play for UMass, as the Minutemen take on Dayton at 1 p.m. Saturday. The game, officially a home game for UMass, will be held at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Kelloggs hometown.
While Kellogg wants his team to focus on the Flyers, he also wants the sting of this loss to resonate for a few days with the Minutemen.
I dont want to push this game out of their mind just yet, the coach said. I want them to see how they played and what they did in the second half.
But Lowe is already looking ahead.
Were not going to say were 5-8 anymore. Were 0-0. Atlantic-10 play starts Saturday, and thats it, he said. Were going to be a different team that takes the court Saturday against Dayton, thats for sure.
MHERST - Senior point guard Chris Lowe willingly took the blame for a humiliating, top-to-bottom failure by the UMass mens basketball team last night.
Vanderbilt dominated all aspects of the game in the second half, outscoring UMass 50-25 en route to a 78-48 drubbing that was the Minutemens second-worst setback ever at the Mullins Center.
The Minutemen fell to 5-8 with their second straight hard loss, and they begin Atlantic 10 play against Dayton (13-1) on Saturday in Springfield.
This is going to burn, but as a veteran point guard (and) captain Ive got to stay focused and Ive been through a lot in my four years of college basketball, said Lowe, who led UMass with 14 points.
Weve been out-toughed the last two games and now its about toughness, now its about pride. We all have to look ourselves in the mirror and ask if we want to be here the next 17 games. I promise you one thing, there is going to be a different team on the court when we get out there on Saturday.
Trailing by five at the break, UMass fortunes tanked in ignominious fashion during the opening minutes of the second half. Lowe opened the frame by scoring on a drive through the lane, but the Commodores responded with a 17-3 run that finished the Minutemen off before the midway point.
Freshman guard Brad Tinsley and center A.J. Ogilvy keyed Vandys second-half explosion, Tinsley from the perimeter and Ogilvy down low.
UMass hit just 16-of-56 from the floor and 4-of-23 from behind the arc. Tony Gaffney and Anthony Gurley, two of the Minutemens most reliable components this season, were a combined 2-of-18 from the floor.
It all unraveled pretty quickly, said UMass coach Derek Kellogg. I burned through our timeouts in a timely fashion and we took terrible, quick, bad shots on the offensive end.
We didnt sprint back on defense and really didnt execute the game plan at all in the second half.
The Minutemen werent much better in the first half and were fortunate to be trailing 28-23 at the break. UMass shot 8-of-28 (28.6 percent) from the floor and 1-of-7 (14.3 percent) from downtown in the opening half.
The Commodores shot an equally distressing 10-of-27 from the floor and their eight turnovers enabled the Minutemen to remain close.
Vanderbilt led just 11-7 at the second officials timeout. But back-to-back 3-pointers from the corner by Tinsley and George Drake extended the lead to 17-7.
Ricky Harris (12 points) gave UMass a push with a pair of floaters, a hoop in transition and two from the line to cut Vandys lead to 21-16 with 4:06 to play.
With both teams displaying poor execution and shot selection from there, neither was able to make any headway going into the break.
