MHERST - Derek Kellogg tries not to look in the stands when he's coaching the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team.
Kellogg knows that he has friends there during most home games, but he tries to keep his focus on the court and his team.
"You want to concentrate on the task at hand," Kellogg said. "When you cross the line, you want to be focused and 100 percent on your game."
It'll be a little a tougher at 1 p.m. Saturday when the Minutemen open Atlantic 10 play against Dayton. The game is at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, where Kellogg grew up and starred for Cathedral High School.
Kellogg is expecting quite a few friends and relatives in the crowd. UMass has not played at the MassMutual Center since Nov. 25, 2005, when it lost the final Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic 86-77 to the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The Minutemen stopped playing an annual game in Springfield after poor turnouts, but Kellogg's connections to the city brought back the event.
"It's something I want to see work out and be an unbelievable experience, with a great crowd, where people are excited and businesses downtown are packed before and after the game," Kellogg said.
"I want us to play well so people can see our team is moving in the right direction and competing at a high level so fans will want to come back," he added. "I want it to be successful so we can continue to do it in the future."
But nostalgia aside, after two straight blowout losses Kellogg's Minutemen (5-8) could use a win to start conference play and it will not be easy to get against the Flyers.
Dayton arrives in western Massachusetts at 14-1 on a six-game game winning streak. The Flyers have outscored their opponents by an average of 12.1 points per game, and have held their opponents to a 35.2 percent scoring average, the best in the Atlantic 10.
Sophomore Chris Wright is delivering on the star potential that he showed glimpses of before being injured last year. The 6-foot-8 forward is averaging 12.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Both lead the Flyers.
Dayton is outrebounding teams by 7.5 boards per game. That could spell trouble for UMass, which has struggled to rebound as a team.
MINUTEMEN IN SPRINGFIELD - UMass is 38-23 all-time at the MassMutual Center (formerly the Springfield Civic Center) and 13-3 since 1990. Kellogg was 8-1 as a college player in the arena, including the Minutemen's 104-80 win over No. 1 Arkansas to open the 1994-95 season. The lone loss came in 1993 to a Cincinnati team led by Nick Van Exel.
HARRIS CLIMBING - With 1,051 career points, Minuteman junior guard Ricky Harris needs three points to pass Alex Eldridge (No. 32) on the UMass career scoring list. Shannon Crooks is at No. 31 with 1,074.
FREE ADMISSION - Fans with tickets to the basketball game can get into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for free from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

PRINGFIELD, Mass. - Playing in head coach Derek Kellogg's hometown of Springfield for the first time since 2005, UMass held a two point lead at halftime, but used a 15-0 run in the middle of the second half to win its Atlantic 10 opener, 75-62, over Dayton on Saturday afternoon at the MassMutual Center. The Minutemen defense held the Flyers scoreless over a 6:43 span during the run. UMass (1-0 A-10) improves to 6-8 on the season, while Dayton (0-1 A-10), the top receiving votes team in this weeks coaches poll, falls to 14-2.
Ricky Harris led all scorers with 23 points, including 3-for-5 from 3-point range. Tony Gaffney (17), Anthony Gurley (16), and Chris Lowe (15) all scored in double-figures for UMass as well. Gaffney pulled down seven boards, while Lowe dished out six assists.
Chris Wright and Marcus Johnson were the only Dayton players in double figures scoring 13 and 10, respectively.
Gaffney started with the hot hand for UMass, scoring six of the team's first eight points on the way to an 8-7 Minutemen lead four minutes in. Two of his hoops during that span came on dunks, with the third being a tip-in of a miss.
It was then Harris taking over, scoring eight of UMass' next 12 points. His 3-pointer with 8:28 left in the half gave the Minutemen a 20-17 lead, but the Flyers came back with a 9-0 run over a 1:30, to take the lead, 26-20.
The Minutemen tied the game on three separate occasions over the rest of the half, with Harris' runner in the lane with 49 seconds left giving UMass a 35-33 lead going into halftime.
Harris piled up 17 points in the opening half on 5-for-6 shooting, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Marcus Johnson led Dayton with seven points. The Minutemen controlled the boards in the first half, outrebounding the Flyers, 19-11.
After Rob Lowery gave the Flyers the lead, 40-39, on a steal and dunk with 17:42 remaining, the Minutemen put together a huge run. They outscored Dayton, 20-2, between the 17:04 and 10:30 marks, including a 15-0 run over a 4:18 span. It was all capped off by a thunderous Gaffney dunk that brought the crowd to its feet and led to a Dayton timeout with the Minutemen leading by 15, 59-42, with 10 and half minutes to go.
The Minutemen then went through a scoring drought of their own, with Gaffney's six points accounting for the only UMass points between the 10:30 and 4:29 marks. Wright's dunk off a miss cut the UMass lead to nine, 65-56, with 2:25 left, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Gurley with under two minutes to go sealed the victory for the Minutemen.
The Minutemen return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Saint Louis to take on the Billikens in an 8 p.m. Atlantic 10 game.
Head Coach Derek Kellogg's general comments
First of all, I thought the atmosphere for the game, the support of the city and all the people that came out today, was fantastic. They came out to the game and gave us a boost in the first half when Dayton made a nice run and pulled ahead by six or eight points, and then again in the second half when we picked up our play and made a nice run in the second half. I would like to thank everyone that came out today because it was a special day for the relationship between the city of Springfield and UMass. I was very pleased with how our guys competed. We got to the free throw line 27 times and we outrebounded them. Those are two things that are an indicator of how hard you play and if you are the aggressor. Defensively, I think we did a great job of executing the game plan and making the game tough on Dayton. Chris Lowe played his best game of the season today and he was the difference between us being okay and pretty good.
Coach Kellogg on Springfield game
This was an enjoyable day. I had a great time out there. Coming back to the city of Springfield and playing at the MassMutual Center, it was a big day for me. I think we have some fish to fry out there that may be a little bit bigger, but this was a good building block for us. I am happy that it turned out the way it did and I would like to play a game or two a year here. I think it worked out great for the area. It was a big day.
Coach Kellogg on having a full week of practice
We needed the week of practice, we probably could have used a month because we still have a ton of stuff to work on. The week was great for us. I didn't really worry about Dayton until later in the week. First, I had to get our team playing the way that I wanted them to play. We had some success, they started buying in a little bit more. It is hard to get them to do exactly what you want when you lose a couple games pretty tough, but this will help us to move forward.
Chris Lowe on A-10 schedule
We have been through a lot of tough practices since last week and I think everyone is starting to buy into what Coach Kellogg is saying. This is our conference schedule now. Forget about what happened in non-conference, we are 0-0 right now. If you think about it, everyone is going to be beat up. Xavier is the only team that will get an at-large bid, so we need to play together and listen to what the coaches are saying. If we do that, we will have a chance to make a run at this.
Ricky Harris on team's ups and downs this season
It has been an up and down season. The win at Kansas was a huge win for us, I think guys got complacent and content. We didn't really work as hard as we wanted to, or as hard as we were supposed to against Vanderbilt. Coach Kellogg told us that if we really wanted to make a run at this, we are going to have to compete every single day at practice. Over the past week, practice has been war. We have been going at it on and off the court. We are starting to come together and play as a team. Hopefully, we can build from this.
Ricky Harris on Anthony Gurley's play
It is huge. The game plan was to stall the ball for a second and run down the shot clock so we could melt some time off the clock. To hit two big shots like that, with five seconds left on the shot clock is big for us. He is a big time player, he came from a big time program at Wake Forest. We expect him to make big plays like that.
Chris Lowe on week of practice
We went back to day one in practice from when Coach Kellogg got here, doing high intensity drills with rebounding and shooting. We knew we were going to have to come in and be physical and win the ball battle to have a shot in the game. Everyone bought in and all five people on the court crashed to the boards and got some rebounds.
Dayton Coach Brian Gregory's general comments
I give credit to UMass and Derek did a great job of getting this team ready to play today. It seems like UMass is still in search of themselves, but they are a talented group and they were very efficient today. We didn't play very well, but they had a lot to do with it. We didn't defend and we didn't rebound. We were very hurried on offense. We lacked the poise you need to play with on the road. We lacked the basketball savvy that you need. We didn't do a very good job in those areas. We challenged our guys. Chris Lowe is as good of a point guard as there is. I know he hasn't had as good of a season as last year, but he is in the A-10 now and he knows this league. I think he has a little better handle on UMass' offense now and knows what Derek expects of him. There is no doubt that that is a team talent-wise that will be very difficult to play against during the season.
Coach Gregory on Tony Gaffney
He is the best non-scoring player in the country. If there was one guy in the league, and no offense to the other guys around the league, but I would take him in a heart beat. He plays with great energy, great intensity. He is not a great shooter by any stretch, around the basket, or anywhere. But he just plays so hard and he makes great things happen. I remember watching him earlier in the year against Memphis and he dominated the game as much as you could in that game with sheer effort and energy alone. Because of that, he has turned himself into a heck of a player. He had 17 points and 7 blocks today and he plays that way every game. You have to give a kid like that credit.
Luke Bonner took three charges on the day and is now up to 10 in only seven games played.
Tony Gaffney finished with seven blocks, his ninth game this season with five or more blocks.
Ricky Harris scored 23 points, the 13th time (out of 14 games) this season that he has reached double figures. The 20 point effort was his seventh of the season.
Dayton only grabbed 26 rebounds, the fewest rebounds UMass has given up to an opponent this season.
UMass' 44 field goal attempts were its fewest all year.
PRINGFIELD - With just under two minutes left in Saturday's game, the Dayton men's basketball team looked capable of an unexpected comeback when a dunk by Chris Wright brought the Flyers within nine points of the University of Massachusetts.
The Minutemen were bleeding the shot clock with each possession as they tried to hold on to the lead, but were not scoring as Dayton kept inching closer.
With the considerable number of Dayton fans at the MassMutual Center getting louder, Chris Lowe drove into the lane for UMass. As the Flyers defense converged, Lowe fired the ball to Anthony Gurley who drained a 3-pointer.
Luke Fabrizius missed a 3-point try for Dayton and Lowe found Gurley again. The sophomore hit another 3 to seal the Minutemen's 75-62 win in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams.
"Whatever I need to do for the team," Gurley said. "I've always wanted to take a big shot at the end of the game. It definitely feels good that my teammates are confident to get me the ball at the end of the game like that."
UMass coach Derek Kellogg also had confidence in Gurley.
"Anthony made two huge 3s in front of our bench," Kellogg said. "We were struggling to score a little bit and we were trying to hold on to the victory.
"He's getting better," added Kellogg. "He's a guy I can count on to knock down a big shot."
Kellogg, who had a significant number of friends and family in the hometown crowd, received a warm ovation after the game as he snuck into the stands to kiss his wife and son.
All week Kellogg openly admitted that he wanted the game in the city where he grew up to be successful enough so it was worth repeating. With 5,485 fans in the arena watching his team start conference play with a win, he was pleased with the result.
"The atmosphere for the game, the support of the city and all the people that came out was fantastic," Kellogg said. "They were into the game and gave us a boost. It was a special day for UMass and city or Springfield ... It was an enjoyable day. I'm happy that everything turned out the way it did."

The Minuteman defense helped them open their biggest lead of 2009 in the second half as UMass held the Flyers scoreless for 6 minutes, 43 seconds. A 15-0 run by the Minutemen increased their margin to 59-42 with 10:28 remaining.
Because scoring is not Dayton's strength, Kellogg opted to milk the advantage and instructed his team to take time off the clock on almost every possession of the second half.
UMass handled the Flyers' defense as well as anyone has all season, shooting 52.3 percent (23-for-44). That's the best any opponent has shot against Dayton, which entered the game leading the conference in field goal percentage defense at 35.2 percent.
Kellogg attributed the Minutemen's offensive success to Lowe, who had 15 points and six assists.
"Chris Lowe played his best game of the season today. That was the difference between us being OK and pretty good," Kellogg said.
Gurley finished with 16 points and also contained Chris Wright (team-high 13 points) for much of the game despite giving away five inches.
Ricky Harris led all scorers with 23 points, and Tony Gaffney added 17 points, seven rebounds and seven blocked shots.
UMass plays at Saint Louis at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

PRINGFIELD - Returning to the birthplace of the sport and their head coach, the University of Massachusetts Minutemen came home again with a 75-62 upset over Dayton yesterday at the MassMutual Center.
"It was an enjoyable day. I had a great time out there," said first-year coach Derek Kellogg, who starred at the city's Cathedral High School half a lifetime ago. Kellogg hopes to play one game a season in Springfield to broaden the UMass fan base.
UMass's first game in Springfield in more than three years opened Atlantic 10 play in surprising fashion. The now 6-8 Minutemen were coming off bruising losses at Houston (by 26) and at home against Vanderbilt (by 30). But for the second straight year they dropped fast-starting Dayton to 14-2 with a team effort.
The Minutemen got plenty of fine individual performances. Ricky Harris led all scorers with 23 points, shooting 5 for 8 from the field and 3 for 5 from behind the arc. Tony Gaffney continued his season-long spree with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 blocked shots. Anthony Gurley poured in 16 points on 4-for-6 long-range shooting, including two seal-the-deal threes in the last two minutes. And point guard Chris Lowe turned in what Kellogg called his best game of the year with 15 points and six assists.
Going into the game, UMass looked particularly vulnerable in rebounding. The Flyers were on top of the 14-team A-10 with a rebounding margin of plus-7.5, while UMass was 13th at minus-4.3. Summoning the toughness that Kellogg had been preaching all season, the Minutemen attacked the boards from start to finish, outrebounding Dayton, 33-26.
"No offense, but UMass has not proven themselves to be a very good rebounding team," said Dayton coach Brian Gregory. "But they brought it today, and we didn't respond very well."
Kellogg said he spent most of the week after the Vanderbilt debacle preaching "attitude and positive body language." He felt his team had slumped too easily into discouragement when things started heading south.
Yesterday's resolve was most apparent during a dramatic second-half sequence. At one end, Gurley seemed to have a clear path to the hoop, but his shot was blocked emphatically by Chris Wright. Dayton fired the ball upcourt to a streaking Rob Lowery, but his shot was spiked to the floor by Gaffney. UMass guard David Gibbs picked it up and hit Gurley ahead of the field for a dunk.
Gaffney continued to be the spark. His blocks and dunks have been the emotional fuel to the best moments of an up-and-down season. He came into the game ranked eighth in the nation in rebounding (11.8) and second in blocked shots (4.8).
"He's the best nonscoring player in the country," said Gregory. "I'd take him in a heartbeat. He plays with great energy, great intensity. He's not a great shooter by any stretch, but he just plays so hard that he makes great things happen."
Dayton was led by Wright, who scored 13 points. Marcus Johnson added 10.
The UMass season has been a startling EKG, with this win and a victory at Kansas on the plus side, and a six-game losing streak and last week's twin embarrassments on the other side. The players wanted to start league play on a high note, and to provide a happy homecoming for Kellogg.
"The last two games, Houston and Vanderbilt, we kind of let him down," said Harris. "Everyone in the Springfield area knows who Coach Kellogg is, and they love him. For us to come out here and get a good win against a good team was big for him and our program."
The Minutemen will try to build off the victory as A-10 play continues Wednesday night at Saint Louis.
PRINGFIELD — After falling to Vanderbilt last week, UMass stressed that it was ready to start fresh against Dayton in its first Atlantic 10 Conference game of the year.
The Minutemen indeed looked motivated, riding a 23-point performance by Ricky Harris and four second-half 3-pointers by Anthony Gurley to a 75-62 victory at the MassMutual Center.
“We’ve been through a lot of tough practices this last week, and everyone’s starting to buy into what Coach (Derek) Kellogg’s saying,” said point guard Chris Lowe, who had 15 points and six assists. “This is our conference right now. We’re forgetting what’s happened in nonconference. Now, it’s 0-0. In this league, everybody’s going to get beat up. So if we stick together and listen to Coach Kellogg, we have a chance to make a run at this.”
UMass (6-8) and Dayton (14-2) held close throughout the first half, and a layup by Harris with less than a minute left until halftime put the Minutemen on top, 35-33, at intermission.
UMass held a slight lead for much of the early second half before a 3-pointer by Gurley five minutes in sparked a 15-0 run in which the Flyers scoreless for 8 minutes, 36 seconds. UMass finished the run on top, 59-42.
“When Anthony defends and rebounds the way he did, his offense seems to come around and be better,” Kellogg said of Gurley, who finished with 16 points and five rebounds. “I’ve been trying to get him to do that, to be our glue guy.”
The Minutemen played the clock for the rest of the game, but a few clutch shots by Dayton, including two 3-pointers off the bench by Luke Fabrizius, brought the lead down to 65-56.
Gurley again proved his capabilities from beyond the arc, nailing two 3-pointers from in front of his own bench to keep the game out of Dayton’s reach.
UMass senior forward Tony Gaffney, who started the season in spectacular fashion but struggled in recent games, seemed to find himself again. His all-around effort ended with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 7 blocks.
“His dunks and blocked shots and rebounds above the rim and steals for easy baskets — those are what make or break teams,” Kellogg said. “It’s sad, but I’m starting to expect seven blocks and 12 rebounds a game from him.”
Dayton was led by Chris Wright (13 points, 9 rebounds) and Marcus Johnson (10 points).
UMass will try to keep the momentum going Wednesday, when the team travels to Saint Louis for an 8 p.m. contest.
PRINGFIELD, Mass. — Dayton raced to a six-point edge late in the first half against Massachusetts, but UD coach Brian Gregory didn't like what he was seeing.
Gregory can tell whether his team is sufficiently dialed in by its aggression on the boards. And despite the lead, the Flyers were being out-rebounded at that point by a whopping 18-8.
"If we're being out-rebounded, 18-8, I don't care what the score is, we're not winning that game ... No offense to UMass, but they've not proven themselves to be a very good rebounding team. But they brought it today, and we didn't respond very well," Gregory said.
"Our starting four and five men (Charles Little and Kurt Huelsman) combined for three rebounds. Off the bench, our other guy in the post (Devin Searcy) had zero. We didn't go to the offensive glass — at all — and you can tell whether you're playing hard or not by that."
UMass out-boarded the Atlantic 10's top rebounding team by seven and shot 52.2 percent from the field on the way to a 75-62 victory before 5,485 fans here Saturday afternoon, Jan. 10.
Leading 40-39 with 17:20 to go, the Flyers' defense punched out and their offense took a siesta. The Minutemen (6-8, 1-0 A-10) held UD to two points over 13 possessions while scoring 20 themselves for a 59-42 lead with 10 minutes left.
"They just out-played us. They beat us at our own game," guard Marcus Johnson said. "We were kind of flat."
Chris Wright had 13 points and Johnson 10 for UD (14-2, 0-1 A-10).
Star of the game
UMass' Tony Gaffney, who is second nationally in blocks, had seven swats to go with 17 points.
Stat of the game
UD had been allowing opponents to shoot just 35.2 percent this season (the second-best mark nationally), and no foe had hit better than 46.4 until UMass went 23-for-44 from the field.
Quote
"We've been good at taking care of the ball and taking very good shots. We were uncharacteristically too fast today," Gregory said. "We took too many quick shots. ... And we didn't do a good job of finishing around the basket."
PRINGFIELD, Mass. - Massachusetts has been a somewhat schizoid team this year, losing against rebuilding Toledo and beating defending national champ Kansas. But going on the road in the Atlantic 10 for the first time brought out the split personality in Dayton, too.
The Flyers took a 40-39 lead on a steal and dunk by Rob Lowery, but they unraveled after that, allowing the Minutemen to go on a 20-2 run that turned a tight game into a rout.
"As a team, we were rattled, and we never settled down," said sophomore forward Chris Wright, who had 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Flyers produced their best nonconference winning percentage in school history by going 14-1 (.933), but they fell to just 2-2 in true road games and 4-2 in all games away from UD Arena.
"Sometimes it gets to you on the road because it's a different environment," Wright said. "But the court is still the same size and the rim is still the same height and it's still an arena. You've got to be able to do it in both places. Today, we just couldn't get it going."
UMass bids for tourney
Massachusetts moved the Dayton game about 30 minutes from its campus in Amherst to the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass., to showcase the facility in hopes of hosting the 2010 Atlantic 10 tournament there. The Minutemen hadn't played a game at the 6,700-seat arena since 2005.
Dayton, which set attendance records when it hosted the league tourney in 2003 and '04, also put in a bid.
First-year A-10 commissioner Bernadette McGlade, who attended the game, said athletic directors will begin preliminary discussions with each potential host later this month and will decide in late March on a tourney locale for 2010, '11 and '12.
The 2009 tourney will be held again in Atlantic City, N.J.
"With every site that has a bid in, there's pros and cons," McGlade said. "We literally are across the board in terms of the types of facilities. There hasn't been a clear direction either way."
UD is one of the few schools that can provide a big-time atmosphere for the event, but other schools balk at giving one team a home-court advantage.
"It's a philosophical decision," McGlade said. "You talk about the competitive equity with the team actually playing in their own facility, as opposed to being in a neutral facility for everyone ... It's really going to be the athletic directors and individual institutions who will make the decision."
Game notes
• The Minutemen have won four straight games in the series. They stopped UD's 13-game winning streak last year and a six-game run this season.
• Kurt Huelsman had a blocked shot to give him a team-high 16 this season. He had nine blocks as a sophomore and 18 as a freshman. But he fouled out with 6:39 to go with no points and two rebounds.
• The Flyers had an inbound gaffe after giving up a basket — not their first this season — when Charles Little stepped over the baseline while trying to stop himself from passing when he realized point guard Rob Lowery wasn't looking.
