efore heading to the airport Tuesday afternoon, University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg had a television set up at the team lunch so the players could watch Barack Obama be sworn in as president and his inaugural speech.
"It was an unbelievable speech," Kellogg said.
But before long the focus was back on basketball as the Minutemen (7-9, 2-1 Atlantic 10) will try to avenge a painful loss and fix their road woes in tonight's game at 7:30 at Charlotte.
Heading into last year's Atlantic 10 Tournament, many prognosticators picked UMass as a likely at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament.
But the No. 3-seeded Minutemen blew an 18-point, second-half lead against No. 6 Charlotte in the second round of the tournament and fell 69-65. The defeat effectively ended the Minutemen's chance to reach the NCAA Tournament.
"That was one of the most disappointing games to be a part of. Not a lot of time goes by when guys don't think about that game," said UMass senior big man Tony Gaffney. "We'll use that as some motivation."
The 49ers were expected to improve this year. They were picked fifth in the A-10 preseason poll and even got two first-place votes. Instead they have taken a significant step back and enter tonight's game with a 5-11 record and 0-3 in the conference. After opening the season 5-6, Charlotte has dropped five straight.
"You hope you're not their breakout game. With the talent they have, if they start making shots they're capable of beating any team in this league," Kellogg said. "We have to do a good enough job defensively to keep them from doing that."
Defense has been a big piece of the problem as Charlotte has allowed 73.6 points per game, second worst in the conference behind only Fordham. The 49ers' opponents have shot 38.2 percent from 3-point range, which is worst in the conference.
Lamont Mack has been Charlotte's most consistent offensive weapon at 13.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, while Dijuan Harris is third in the league at 5.88 assists per game.
UMass hopes to use the game to end its road woes. Because the Kansas game in Kansas City is technically considered a neutral-site game (as is the Dayton game at Springfield) according to NCAA statistics, the Minutemen are 0-6 in road games.
But Halton Arena at Charlotte has not been a particularly tough destination for visiting teams as the 49ers are just 3-4 there this year.
"You have to play well to win on the road because you don't have as much margin for error," Kellogg said. "You need to play 40 minutes. Thirty minutes isn't getting it done. Thirty-two minutes isn't getting it done."
CHART CLIMBING - UMass senior point guard Chris Lowe (585) needs 12 assists to tie Edgar Padilla (597) at No. 2 on the UMass career assists chart. Lowe needs 32 points to reach 1,000 for his career.
Ricky Harris whose 1,116 career points has him at No. 30 on the Minutemen's career scoring list is in range of Mike Williams (1,122) and former teammate Gary Forbes (1,128).
Harris has 172 career 3-pointers and needs six to catch Lorenzo Sutton (178), who is No. 5 on the UMass career list.
FORBES TRADED - Forbes, who started this season with the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA Development League, was traded to the Tulsa 66ers Tuesday in a three-team deal.
Forbes was averaging 16.5 points and 4.8 rebounds before the deal.

HARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers used a late rally to force overtime before outscoring the Minutemen, 14-9 in the extra session to hand the UMass men's basketball team another crushing road loss, 69-64, on Wednesday night at Halton Arena. The game marked by huge runs also featured an 18-1 UMass run coming after the 49ers staged an 18-0 run. The Minutemen fall to 7-10 on the season, 2-2 in A-10 play, while Charlotte snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 6-11, 1-3 in the A-10.
The 49ers scored nine of the final 12 points in regulation to erase a 52-46 UMass lead. It was capped off by two consecutive 3-pointers from Ian Anderson.
Charlotte kept the momentum going with an 8-2 run to begin the overtime period, a margin that proved too much for the Minutemen to overcome.
Luke Bonner tied his career-high with 15 points and set a new career-high with 11 rebounds. Ricky Harris finished with 19 points, Anthony Gurley netted 10, and Tony Gaffney had nine points to go along with 13 boards.
Charlotte was led by Lamont Mack with 23 points, 15 of which came after halftime. Anderson was the only other 49er in double figures, netting 13.
Each team shot 36 percent from the field. The Minutemen shot 32 percent from behind the 3-point arc (10-31) while the 49ers were 39 percent (10-26). Charlotte won the battle of the boards, 44-38.
The 49ers rode the momentum from a 10-0 run to end the first half, scoring the first eight points of the second to break a 29-29 tie. Harris made it 37-31 with 17:17 remaining in regulation to snap UMass' 6:13 scoreless drought.
Mack's third 3-pointers in the first 3:19 of the second made it 40-31 with 16:41 to go.
The Minutemen erased a nine-point deficit with a 12-0 run, capped off by two David Gibbs baskets for a 45-42 advantage.
UMass extended its run to 18-1, which included a rare 3-pointer from Gaffney. The Minutemen defense held the 49ers without a field goal for 7:49.
A Gaffney slam dunk sandwiched between 3-pointers from Bonner and Harris gave the Minutemen an early 8-0 lead. UMass held Charlotte scoreless until 15:15 remaining in the first half when an An'Juan Wilderness layup cut the score to 8-2.
After a Gurley 3-pointer, UMass was held scoreless for the next 4:05, as Charlotte used a 9-2 run to trim a nine point deficit to two at 13-11.
The Minutemen responded with a 12-4 run of their own, led by Bonner and Harris who each netted five, allowing UMass to open its largest lead of the game, 25-15. After trading baskets over the next 2:31, the 49ers made a 10-0 surge over the final 3:31 of the first half, highlighted by two alley oops to Charlie Cooley, which tied the score at 29 heading into the locker room.
UMass returns home on Saturday at 4 p.m. to host La Salle on 1980s celebration night.
Luke Bonner tied a career-high with 15 points and set a new career-high with 11 rebounds.
Bonner had his fifth-career game in double-figure scoring and second game this season with his career-high tying 15 points also done against Hofstra (12/20/08).
Bonner played a career-high 39 minutes, shattering his old high of 26 set at Saint Louis (1/14) last Wednesday.
UMass had two players with 10 rebounds in a game for the first time this season as Bonner had 11 and Tony Gaffney had a game-high 13 boards. The last time UMass had two players with 10 or more rebounds was against Rhode Island (2/7/08) when Etienne Brower had 17 and Gary Forbes had 13.
Gaffney had his 10th double-figure game this season and 12th of his career with 13 boards. He narrowly missed his seventh-double-double with nine points.
Gaffney is now averaging 10.8 rebounds, ninth in the NCAA.
Gaffney had two blocks and is at 4.7 per game, second in the NCAA.
Ricky Harris had 19 points, his 16th time in 17 games with 10 more this season and 56 in his career.
Harris moved to 28th in career scoring at UMass as he now has 1135, passing No. 29 Mike Williams (1,122) and No. 28 Gary Forbes (1,128).
Harris made three 3-pointers and has 175, just behind Lorenzo Sutton (178).
Anthony Gurley had 10 points, his 11th game this season in double-figures -- on his 21st birthday and his first game in North Carolina, one hour from Wake Forest where he started his career.
UMass is now 0-3 in overtime games over the last two seasons. It also lost to Boston College this season and Temple last year. The last OT win for the Minutemen came in the NIT vs. Alabama on March 13, 2007.
Tony Gaffney had his team-best 29th dunk of the season in the early going. He also drew his fourth charge of the season and hit his third 3-pointer of the season.
The Minutemen defense held the 49ers to only four points in a 11:34 span in the second half spanning from 13:29 remaning in regulation to 1:55 remaining.
HARLOTTE, N.C. - UMass was 0-for-6 on the road this season and Charlotte was 0-for-2009, so something had to give when the teams played at Halton Arena Wednesday night.
The 49ers snapped their five-game losing streak with a 69-64 victory by outscoring the Minutemen 14-9 in overtime.
It was a tough loss for UMass (7-10, 2-2 Atlantic 10) which has struggled to put back-to-back wins together.
Coming off a 79-75 win over Temple Saturday, the Minutemen could not duplicate that effort at Charlotte which improved to 6-11 overall and 1-3 in the Atlantic 10.
"It became a game where both teams played with desperation," said UMass coach Derek Kellogg. The 49ers "competed to the final buzzer in regulation and overtime and I thought we competed pretty hard for the entire game. It's kind of who makes shots and plays down the stretch."
The Minutemen used 3-point shooting to jump on the 49ers quickly. Ricky Harris, Anthony Gurley (10 points) and Luke Bonner all connected from behind the arc to give UMass an 11-2 advantage.
Charlotte was kept off the scoreboard until An'Juan Wilderness made a field goal with 15:15 remaining in the first half after the 49ers started 0-for-7 from the floor.
Charlotte outscored the Minutemen 9-4 through the midway point of the first 20 minutes of action and seemed to have found a groove, but Harris' second 3-pointer with 9:09 remaining quieted the 49ers' run.
Another 3-pointer by Bonner (15 points, 11 rebounds) at the 6:02 mark put UMass on top 25-15.
However, Charlotte tied the game 29-29 at halftime as the Minutemen were unable to score for the final 3:31 of the first.
The 49ers built a nine-point lead in the second half before UMass came storming back.
Harris, who finished with a team-high 19 points, helped the Minutemen regain the lead with 9:41 left in the game.
But, after being ahead by as many as eight points, UMass watched Charlotte close out the second half with a 3-pointer by Ian Anderson to tie the game at 55-55, forcing overtime.
"It was a pretty evenly matched game," said UMass senior forward Tony Gaffney. "It was a game of runs and they made the last run."
Gaffney scored nine points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Lamont Mack had a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds for the 49ers.
UMass is back in action at 4 p.m. Saturday against La Salle at the Mullins Center.
here were many chances for the Charlotte 49ers to let their 69-64 overtime victory against Massachusetts slip away.
It's happened so many times this season. It could have happened when leading scorer Lamont Mack picked up his fourth foul with 12 minutes left Wednesday in the second half and Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz received a technical for arguing the call.
It could have happened when UMass used an 18-1 run to claim an eight-point lead with 5 minutes, 55 seconds to play.
Or it could have happened after Ian Andersen was whistled for a foul that sent UMass to the line and gave the Minutemen a four-point lead with 1:10 left.
This is what happened:
![]() Luke Bonner wrestles control of the loose ball away from Lamont Mack, with Tony Gaffney ready to help. Photo courtesy: Robert Lahser, Charlotte Observer |
Andersen hit two 3-pointers in the final 55 seconds of regulation to tie the game.
And DiJuan Harris iced the win at Halton Arena with a free throw with 20 seconds left.
Hopefully this game will be like the Southern Illinois (win) was for us. That was a big confidence booster; we won three more after that and then injuries took over, said Lutz.
This hasn't been a fair year to this group of guys. It's been tough to get momentum.
The victory was the first for Charlotte (6-11, 1-3) in 2009 snapping a five-game losing streak and first Atlantic 10 win of the season. It doesn't get easier with consecutive road games at Temple and nationally-ranked Xavier.
For the time being, the 49ers will relish this victory.
Every day in practice coach has been pushing us from the start to the end of practice, said Mack, who has scored 23 points in three consecutive games.
We've been working on late-game situations and there was a time in the game we weren't able to score. But what we did was stay focused and we made the plays we needed to win down the stretch.
Helping Charlotte's cause was another strong rebounding effort. The 49ers have out-rebounded their past two opponents and their 14-9 advantage on the offensive end Wednesday gave Charlotte plenty of second-chances.
Ricky Harris led UMass (7-10, 2-2) with 19 points and Anthony Gurley had 10, including a pair of nearly 30-foot 3-pointers late in the overtime.
