MHERST - The best news for La Salle men's basketball coach John Giannini is that Saturday's game is not senior day for the University of Massachusetts.
The Explorers were in Amherst for the Minutemen's last regular-season home game in both 2007 and 2008. The La Salle players watched the UMass seniors receive their plaques and applause and then come out and whip the Explorers, 102-63 in 2007 and 100-63 in 2008.
In each of those games, a Minuteman - Stephane Lasme in 2007 and Chris Lowe last year - registered a triple-double.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg does not need triple-doubles or 100-point performances at 4 p.m. Saturday when the teams meet again at the Mullins Center. He would like to see the Minutemen play to their capabilities.
"I just want to play well consistently whether we're at home or on the road," he said. "I think we're starting to do that. I hope that's what our team becomes."
The Minutemen (7-10, 2-2 Atlantic 10) could use a win after Wednesday's 69-64 overtime loss to Charlotte. The bright spot from that game was the play of senior big man Luke Bonner, who had 15 points and 11 rebounds.
"I need to be consistent getting rebounds and making my rotations defensively and playing hard. Some nights my shots are going to fall and sometimes they aren't," Bonner said. "What I can control is bringing effort every day and rebounding."
Kellogg said he hopes that is a sign of things to come.
"He was great. He was fantastic. He's one more guy you can count on to come and play and do everything you ask for every time out," Kellogg said. "He was great. He rebounded. He played big. When he's energized, that's when he plays well."
La Salle arrives in Amherst at 10-7 (1-2 A-10). Included in those seven losses are some close games against tough opponents. The Explorers lost to Florida State (65-61) and put a scare into Connecticut (89-81) at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
La Salle is one of the Atlantic 10's best rebounding teams. The Explorers have outrebounded their opponents by an average of 6.8 per game, a margin second only to Xavier in the conference.
Junior guard Rodney Green of La Salle is making a case for first-team all-conference honors. His 16 points-per-game average is sixth in the conference, while his assists (3.47 per game) and steals (two) are also among the league leaders.
The teams will meet again at 5 p.m. March 1 in Philadelphia.
CHART CLIMBING - Seventeen points would vault junior Ricky Harris (1,135) over three players on the UMass career scoring list - Lari Ketner and Will Herndon, who are tied at No. 26 with 1,148, and No. 25 Rodger Twitchell (1,151). Harris is 28 points behind No. 24 Rafer Giles (1,163).
Harris (175) needs three 3-pointers to crack the top five in school history. Next up is Lorenzo Sutton (178).
Lowe (590) needs seven assists to catch No. 2 Edgar Padilla (597) on the UMass career list. And 27 points would give Lowe 1,000 for his career.
1980S NIGHT - Players and others from the 1980s will be honored at halftime of Saturday's game as part of the celebration of 100 Seasons of UMass Basketball. Former players Matt Anderson, Bob Braun, Tony DePina, Kurt Funk, Bill Hampton, Cary Herer, Sean Nelen, Horace Neysmith, Hal Shaw, Jack Sheehan, Fitzhugh Tarry, Keith Whitt, Ron Young and former assistant coach Dennis Jackson, are all expected to attend and will be honored at halftime.
NOTES - The game could serve as a reunion of the 2006-07 Northfield Mount Hermon basketball team as Minutemen Matt Glass and Gary Correia were prep school teammates with La Salle twin big men Jerrell and Terrell Williams. Minuteman senior big man Tony Gaffney also did a postgraduate year at Northfield.
Former La Salle guard Sean Neal, the son of Congressman Richard Neal is now the Explorers video coordinator.
Former Minuteman Travon Wilcher has officially enrolled at Maine.

MHERST, Mass. - Tony Gaffney registered his seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds, but the Minutemen suffered a tough shooting day, falling to La Salle, 62-54, on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center. UMass shot just 26.5 percent in the second half and 33.9 percent for the game. The Minutemen fall to 7-11 overall and 2-3 in the A-10, while La Salle goes to 11-7 and 2-2 in conference.
The Minutemen shot only 14 percent (3-for-21) on 3-pointers while La Salle was 25 percent (4-for-16). Chris Lowe also tallied 10 points while Anthony Gurley added eight. Rodney Green led the way for the Explores with 22 points.
UMass jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, led by two early hoops by Tyrell Lynch off the bench, but La Salle came back by getting to the foul line. At the 12 minute mark of the first half, six fouls had been called on the Minutemen to none on the Explorers.
La Salle led by eight when at the 5:54 mark Gurley converted a 4-point play, his second in as many home games, to cut the Explorers lead to 23-19.
The Explorers went on a 9-0 run, led by six points from Green, to take a 13-point lead with 2:27 left in the half, 33-20, but the Minutemen used a fullcourt press to force turnovers and closed the half on a 8-1 run and go into halftime down six, 34-28.
UMass shot just 1-for-11 from 3-point range in the first half, while connecting on 43 percent of its shots overall. The Explorers shot 48 percent from the field and were 4-for-9 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.
The Explorers increased their lead to nine, 43-34, with 14:15 left, but the Minutemen scored seven-straight points midway through the second half to pull within one, 49-48, on a 3-pointer from the corner by Luke Bonner.
That is when UMass' shooting went cold and the Explorers, led by Green and Kimmani Barrett (11 points), scored outscored the Minutemen, 10-4, over the final 5:10.
The 100 Years of UMass Basketball Celebration continued on Saturday with the players and teams of the 1980s being honored throughout the game and at halftime.
The Minutemen return to action in a week when they travel to Cincinnati to take on #15 Xavier in a noon tilt on Saturday.
Head Coach Derek Kellogg's general comments
That was obviously a difficult game for us. Going 3-21 from three and missing numerous, numerous layups was the key to the game. For La Salle, they did a good job in their zone, but I actually thought we attacked it pretty decently and finally got the ball into the middle of the paint. We just didn't finish a lot of our plays tonight and I'm not sure what the reason for that is. I thought we played pretty good defense. The key factor in the game was in the end, we were down one and they posted Rodney Green two times in a row. He just makes plays. He made two great plays to basically seal the game. I think they went up 55-50 and that was it.
Coach Kellogg on Ricky Harris
Obviously teams are going to stay connected to Ricky and make it hard for him to get off shots. I thought although he was 0-6 from three, three or four of them were pretty good looks on tip outs. He didn't have it going tonight. If he scores six points, we are going to be in a close game. We need his 16-20 points a night; there is no doubt about that.
Coach Kellogg on the team's play
We've put together a pretty good stretch where they've played very hard. I am accustomed to that now and that is the way I expect them to play. I'm playing Tony and Luke quite a bit and I need to make sure they get their rest between games. The overtime game at Charlotte and then traveling back, that could have something to do with it. I'm not going to make excuses; I just think that we need to have the mentality that we are going to come out every night ready to play.
Coach Kellogg on Luke Bonner
Luke has given us everything he has. There is not an ounce of energy in him that he is not trying to put out there. He only played 23 minutes tonight, which is good. I think he should be playing 25-30 minutes per game, where he can give maximum effort.
Luke Bonner on Minutemen effort
I would say, in the second half the intensity was there. I don't know what was going on in the first half. We came out flat and a couple things didn't go our way. It didn't seem like there was much energy in the building, or from the team. In the second half we found ourselves in the game. We found a way to keep it close, but you can't just expect to show up and win just because you are home. You need to play 40 complete minutes. I give credit to La Salle as well for getting a tough road win.
Bonner on the loss to La Salle
This one hurt a lot. I only have 12 games left and you never want to lose a home game, especially in conference. We were still down one, and I know I got an open look in the corner. I thought that was in and it rimmed out. We just couldn't get over that hump, but we were in a bad position from the start. We shouldn't have put ourselves in that position in the first place.
Bonner on Ricky Harris' play
I wouldn't say that Ricky's scoring was so much the issue. Defensively, we had a chance and we didn't get stops when we needed them. There was a few seconds in the first half when we got down 13 and it's tough to overcome that. We don't have that much margin for error, and when you have lapses its tough to make up for it.
Tony Gaffney on being down one late in the game
All in all it was a frustrating game. If we are not knocking down shots, we need something else to win the ball game. We haven't done that all year. When we're not hitting from outside, we're not winning. We shot 3-21 threes tonight. Coach stresses over and over again, if you are not knocking down shots then you better do something else to keep yourself in the game. Across the board we didn't do that, and it showed. That is why we lost the game.
Gaffney on La Salle loss
For four guys, this season is going to be over and for the young guys it goes by fast. We have 12 games left and we just threw another one away tonight. Guys have to learn that the season might be long, but you only play so many games.
La Salle Head Coach John Giannini's general thoughts
Obviously we are very pleased with the play and the result. After two lopsided losses here the past couple years and then seeing UMass play so well against extremely strong Temple and Dayton teams, it just highlights how pleased we are with these results. They are a very hard team to defend and we did a tremendous job trying to do that. We had a lot of guys contribute and I'm very pleased with my team.
Coach Giannini on defending Ricky Harris
We are a switching team and we played some zone this game so there was no one person that was responsible for that. The key thing is that we always tried to be aware of him and we did say that if you are guarding Ricky Harris, or Anthony Gurley for that matter, not to leave him. We really didn't want to play conventional defense where you are helping and we didn't play help at all. We would rather live and die with some other people scoring than have those guys get threes.
Coach Giannini on Rodney Green
We came here last year with freshmen and sophomores, the year before that with almost all freshmen, and it's just normal maturation for an outstanding player. He was an All-Rookie Team guy and he's an All-Conference guy. He's just a good kid who has really worked hard and he's moving towards his potential. We think he is a tremendous talent and he was tremendous today.
Anthony Gurley made a 4-point play for the second home game in a row after hitting one last Saturday vs. Temple. He also had a chance for third in the last two games in the Temple contest, but missed a free throw on a second opportunity in that game.
Tony Gaffney had his seventh double-double of the season after never having one in his career in his first three seasons spanning 81 games. Gaffney racked up 19 points and 11 rebounds.
It was Gaffney's ninth game this season in double-figure scoring with 19 and his 13th in his career.
Tony Gaffney had his 31st dunk in the first half.
Chris Lowe scored in double-figures for the ninth time this season and 39th in his career with 10.
MHERST - They are lucky numbers in Las Vegas, and good ones if you're looking for a convenience store.
But the inconvenient truth for the University of Massachusetts is that a 7-11 record is shading toward a frustrating year. Without a late surge, the debut season of coach Derek Kellogg appears headed for disappointment.
Yesterday's 62-54 loss to La Salle was particularly galling for the Minutemen (2-3 in the Atlantic 10). UMass was cold from the field (21 of 62, 33.9 percent) and frigid from long range (3 of 21, 14.3 percent). After clawing back from a 13-point first-half deficit to twice trim the margin to a single point in the second half, the Minutemen couldn't complete the comeback.
The game essentially mirrored UMass's season. There were moments of fine and inspired play, but just not enough to spell success.
"We were just about to get over the hump," said Kellogg. "We didn't make that three. We didn't make that layup. We turned the ball over a couple of times. We don't have that margin for error. That's just the way it is right now."
The sequence Kellogg mentioned came after Chris Lowe hit a pair of free throws with 7:22 left to draw UMass within 51-50. Over the next two minutes, the Minutemen had four shots to take the lead, but with the Mullins Center crowd of 5,622 exhorting them, they couldn't find the net. Lowe (10 points) was blocked by Rodney Green. Tony Gaffney (19 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocks) missed a reverse layup. Ricky Harris, who was held to just 6 points, couldn't get a floater to fall. Then Luke Bonner, who had hit a 3-pointer from the right corner two minutes earlier, had one rim out from the left side.
At that point, Green took over for the Explorers (11-7, 2-2). On back-to-back possessions, the 6-foot-5-inch junior posted up a pair of UMass guards to give La Salle a 5-point lead. Green finished with a game-high 22 points.
"It's just normal maturation for an outstanding player," said La Salle coach John Giannini. "He's moving toward his potential. We think he's a tremendous talent, and he was tremendous today."
Giannini was particularly pleased with La Salle's defensive effort. The long and lean Explorers covered the court quickly in their zone, stymieing Harris in particular. The UMass junior came in averaging 19.6 points, but he struggled to find open looks and shot just 3 of 11 from the field and 0 of 6 from beyond the arc. Two of his baskets came on goaltending calls.
"If we're not knocking down shots, we've got to do something else to win the ballgame," said a frustrated Gaffney, who had to get stitches after being whacked in the face in the first half. "We haven't done that all year. When we're not hitting from outside, we're not winning."
Gaffney's effort has been relentless all season. He came into the contest ninth in the nation in rebounding (10.8) and second in blocked shots (4.6). But the wear and tear of the season seems to be weighing on him.
"As a senior, it goes by quick," he said. "We have 12 games left, and we just threw another one away tonight."
MHERST - The unpredictable season of the University of Massachusetts mens basketball team seemed to be developing something of a routine lose on the road and win at home.
But the safe haven of the Mullins Center, where the Minutemen had been 4-1 since Dec. 10, was not enough to keep UMass from falling to La Salle, 62-54, yesterday in Atlantic 10 Conference play.
You cant just expect to show up and win because youre home. Give them credit, they won a tough game on the road, UMass senior center Luke Bonner said. This one hurts a lot. Weve got 12 games left, and you never want to lose a home game, especially in conference.
Tony Gaffney echoed his teammates thoughts.
As a senior, (the season) goes by quick, Gaffney said. We have 12 games left, and we just threw another one away.
In a mutually sloppy game that saw 24 combined turnovers, the Explorers held the lead since 9:13 in. Despite shooting just 36.4 percent (29.6 percent in the second half) and going 3 for 18 from beyond the arc, UMass found itself down, 49-41, midway through the second half.
A pair of free throws by Gaffney (17 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks) started a 9-2 run to bring the Minutemen within 51-50, a run that included a momentum-shifting 3-pointer by Bonner.
But UMass (7-11, 2-3) never got closer, and a number of clutch baskets by La Salles Rodney Green (22 points, 5 rebounds) kept the game out of reach late.
Lukes given us everything he has. Theres not an ounce of energy in him that hes not trying to get out there, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said of his center. In the second half, we turned up the heat and made some good runs, but we just dont have that margin of error to get over that hump.
Neither team could gain the momentum early with UMass holding a 8-7 lead after 6:38. Then La Salle (11-7, 2-2 A-10) found its collective stroke and went on a 26-12 run that finished with the Explorers on top, 33-20.
The Minutemen bounced back with six straight points, thanks to a Ricky Harris fast-break bucket between a Gaffney dunk and layup. UMass kept the Explorers lead to 34-28 at halftime.
La Salle, who also got strong performances from Kimmani Barrett (11 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals) and Yves Mekongo Mbala (9 points, 10 rebounds), kept two of UMass best shooters, Harris and Anthony Gurley, quiet for much of the game. Harris finished with six points, his lowest total of the year, and Gurley went 1 for 5 from behind the 3-point arc.
We really didnt want to play a conventional defense, La Salle coach John Giannini said. Wed rather live and die with other people scoring than have those guys (Harris and Gurley) get 3s.
UMass next faces a tough challenge at noon Saturday when it travels to No. 15 Xavier.
MHERST - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team Saturday reverted to a formula that led to its early season trouble - lots of Tony Gaffney and not enough everybody else.

Gaffney finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and three steals, but only Chris Lowe (10 points) joined him in double figures.
The Explorers held Ricky Harris to a season-low six points, a number that may have been helped by two goaltending calls. He was 3-for-11 from the field and 0-for-6 from 3-point range.
The Minutemen (7-11, 2-3 Atlantic 10) finished 3-for-21 from behind the arc.
"They're a very hard team to defend and we did a tremendous job trying to do that," La Salle coach John Giannini said. "We said if you're on Ricky Harris, not to leave him. We didn't want people to help off them at all."
UMass has the week off before traveling to Cincinnati to face Xavier at noon next Saturday.
"All in all, if we're not making shots we need to do something else to win the game," Gaffney said. "Across the board we didn't do that. They out-toughed us. They wanted it more and they won."
Despite a flat performance in the first half, the Minutemen were still alive late, trailing by one at 51-50 after two free throws by Chris Lowe with 7 minutes, 22 seconds left.
After Gaffney blocked Kimmani Barrett's shot, UMass had several chances to pull ahead. But Lowe and Gaffney missed layups, Harris missed a jumper and Luke Bonner's 3-pointer from the corner rimmed out before Rodney Green scored inside for the Explorers to make the score 53-50.
"I got an open look in the corner. I thought it was in and it just rattled out," Bonner said.
David Gibbs tried to tie it, but his 3-pointer missed and Green scored again to increase the lead to 55-50 with 4:12 remaining.
"Green made two great plays to basically seal the game for them," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said.
Gaffney made two free throws, but Vernon Goodridge answered for La Salle with a layup inside and Yves Mekongo Mbala added another.
A layup by Harris on which goaltending was called was the only basket for the Minutemen in the last 8:22 of the game. UMass went 1-for-13 in that stretch.
"We missed a lot of easy shots," Kellogg said. "I don't know if it was because of their size or the fact that we just didn't have our A-plus game. We don't have that margin for error."
Green led the Explorers (11-7, 2-2 A-10) with 22 points, while Mekongo Mbala had nine points and 10 rebounds.
Bonner said it was a missed opportunity for the Minutemen.
"In the second half the intensity was there," Bonner said. "I don't know what happened in the first half. It didn't seem like there was much intensity in the building from the team. We found a way to keep it close, but you can't just expect to show up and win just because you're at home.
"This one hurts a lot," he added. "We have 12 games left. You never want to lose a home game, especially in conference."

MHERST - After practice on Friday, University of Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg called outside shooting his team's strength because the Minutemen have played well when they've made 3-pointers.
But those shooting skills were nowhere to be found Saturday as UMass lost 62-54 to La Salle at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen shot 3-for-21 from behind the arc.
"With the fine line we have between winning and losing, we have to make shots," Kellogg said. "We can't go 3-for-21 from 3."
Luke Bonner, who made one of those 3s, said, "There's going to be days when that happens. We have to find ways to make up for that. Today was a frustrating game."
Ricky Harris had a particularly tough night as the junior was 0-for-6 from 3-point range.
"I just couldn't get it going. I don't know. The didn't do anything special defensively. It just wasn't falling," said Harris, who thought picking up three first-half fouls affected his whole game.
"I got three fouls in the beginning and that tipped my confidence," he added. "It started making me think. Offensively I didn't want to overdrive and get charges. On the defensive end I wasn't aggressive."
Six points was the lowest total for Harris since he finished with three against Fordham last Feb. 14.
Kellogg said it's hard for UMass to win when Harris struggles.
"Obviously teams are going to stay connected to Ricky and make it hard for him to get off shots," Kellogg said. "He just didn't have it going tonight. If he scores six (more) points I think we're going to be in a close game. We need his 16 to 20 per night."
BONNER BOARDS - Bonner, who had a career-high 11 rebounds Wednesday against Charlotte, had eight against the Explorers, including seven in the second half.
"He's giving us everything he has," Kellogg said. "There's not an ounce of energy he's not giving out there."
NEXT UP - The schedule gets tougher for the Minutemen from here. They're off this week before heading to Cincinnati to face No. 15 Xavier at noon next Saturday.
The Musketeers are 17-2 after defeating LSU 80-70 Saturday night.
MISCELLANEOUS - Former Minuteman pitcher and current Houston Astro Chad Paronto was among the 5,622 fans in attendance.
Anthony Gurley had his second four-point play in the last three games.
Tony Gaffney needed stitches after the game after taking an arm to the face in the first half. He had his seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
