UMass ready for Atlantic 10 test vs. No. 10 Xavier
By Eli Rosenswaike, Massachusetts Daily Collegian Staff, 1/29/2009

During the press conference after the Massachusetts men’s basketball team’s loss to La Salle on Jan. 24, Tony Gaffney talked about how the Explorers simply wanted it more than they did.

From one game to the next, Gaffney is rarely sure which Minuteman team will show up, but he’s confident UMass’ best effort will be on display Saturday against No. 10 Xavier, in what will likely be its toughest test this season.

“You know us; we’re a tough team to read. But Xavier on national television speaks for itself,” he said before Wednesday’s practice. “That’s a Top 10 team and they have an 18-game home conference winning streak. I have no doubt we’re going to show up for that game – it’s the games in between that worry me.”

Point guard Chris Lowe knows they better be, or they’ll be in for a tough afternoon in Cincinnati, Ohio, otherwise.

“There’s no not wanting it against Xavier unless you want to get embarrassed,” he said.

The Musketeers (18-2, 6-0 Atlantic 10) have been doing that to a lot of teams this season. Xavier currently has the nation’s fourth-best RPI and seventh-hardest strength of schedule in the country, with marquee wins over Memphis, Virginia Tech, LSU and Cincinnati. Its only two losses this season were to No. 1 Duke and Butler, who are 17-1.

Xavier, which made the Elite 8 last season, doesn’t do it with flash. They play the game with the ultimate team-first mentality, specializing in stifling defense and selflessness on the floor.

“They just play together, nobody cares who scores,” Lowe said. “They have a different leading scorer every game; it’s not just one person that dominates.

“Xavier doesn’t really produce many NBA players, but they keep producing great college players and they have a great tradition,” he added. “It feels like they just keep bringing great players in.”

Xavier coach Sean Miller utilizes all of them, as his rotation of nine players all play at least 10 minutes per game and contribute all over the floor. The Musketeers dominate teams defensively (outscoring their opponents 73.6-62.5), hit their 3-pointers when they take them (38.7 percent on 120 made 3’s) and get to the line significantly more often their counterparts (29 attempts to 19 per game).

Xavier has eight players averaging at least five points per game, with three in double figures and nobody averaging more than 14.2 per game. The same goes with rebounding (six average between 4.1 and 6.4 per game). No matter the position, each Musketeer can do a little bit of everything on the court – and that makes them balanced, consistent and tough to beat.

The Minutemen are quite familiar with the Musketeers and what they’re up against, and are ready for the challenge – especially having already played two nationally televised road games (at Memphis and at Kansas) in tough atmospheres this season.

“We know what the environment is going to be like, we’ve played in plenty of hostile environments this year and a lot of guys on our team ride off of that – I know I definitely do,” Gaffney said.

Anytime UMass can play the elite programs in the country – especially on national television – it’s extremely beneficial for the program, in terms of exposure, recruiting and level of competition. And that effect only magnifies when the Minutemen pull of the upset, as they did with the defending champion Jayhawks on Dec. 13.

UMass hung around early with then-No. 13 Memphis, but were ultimately outmatched in an 80-58 loss. The Minutemen didn’t fade against then-No. 25 Kansas, holding on at the last second for a 61-60 win. Time will tell, but neither of those teams appears as good as Xavier.

As for the Minutemen, they are running out of games (11 left) to turn around their season. An at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament is an extremely unlikely proposition, and UMass would need to win eight of its last 12 games (one would have to be in the A-10 Tournament) just to reach a .500 record and be eligible for its third straight trip to the NIT.

After losses in-conference to Charlotte (6-12, 1-4 A-10), Saint Louis (11-8, 2-3 A-10) and La Salle ( 11-7, 2-2 A-10), the Minutemen have a chance to make a statement to Xavier – and the rest of the conference – with their biggest win of the season.

UMass faces Musketeers
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/31/2009

AMHERST - If Memphis is the ultimate role model for what Derek Kellogg wants his University of Massachusetts men's basketball program to become, Xavier is not far behind.

Like Memphis, Xavier is a non-BCS conference school that is a fixture in the NCAA Tournament and a regular in the top 25.

Kellogg and the Minutemen will get to study the Musketeers up close at noon Saturday at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

"They're one of those programs that anyone who is not in a BCS league would like to emulate," Kellogg said. "They're a perennial NCAA team. They have the fan support you need. They're graduating players. They're recruiting at the highest level. I hope at some point people talk about us in the same breath as a school like Xavier."

Xavier is ranked No. 10 in both polls with a 17-2 overall record and a perfect 5-0 in the Atlantic 10.

The Musketeers opened the season on an eight-game winning streak, lost back-to-back games to Duke and Butler and have won nine in a row since. They are outscoring opponents by an average of 11.7 points per game.

The inconsistent Minutemen have not won at Xavier since 2001. Meanwhile, the Musketeers have won 19 straight home games against A-10 teams and are 115-17 in nine seasons at the Cintas Center.

"It's imperative that we play well and prove to ourselves that we can play with teams like Xavier in an away game," Kellogg said. "You're not a player if you don't want to take on those challenges and you're not a coach if you don't want to try to come up with a game plan to put yourself in a position to win this game."

Xavier, which went 30-7 last year and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, has maintained is success despite losing three starters - leading scorer Josh Duncan, point guard Drew Lavender and top defender Stanley Burrell.

Musketeers junior Derrick Brown has emerged as one of the conference's top big men, averaging 13.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Senior B.J. Raymond remains one of the conference's most reliable outside shooters. He is making 40.4 percent of his 3-pointers and averaging 12.8 points per game.

"They're the best team we'll play all year. There's not a weak link," Kellogg said. "They have an experienced group of guys that are all on the same page."

What should further concern the rest of the Atlantic 10 is that freshmen point guard Terrell Holloway and center Kenny Frease have started to increase their contributions in recent weeks, making the Musketeers that much deeper.

"Those are freshmen who have had the opportunity to get their feet wet and learn while the team is still winning," Kellogg said. "That's a great position to be in."

At 7-11 (2-3 Atlantic 10), UMass has been inconsistent all season, but junior guard Ricky Harris believes the Minutemen will raise their play Saturday.

"Since I've been here, we haven't beaten Xavier. I think this is an opportunity for us to go shock the world. I wouldn't be surprised if we beat them," Harris said.

"For some reason we've come to play against the known teams," he added. "I think we play to the level of competition. That's been our downfall this season. But when we go against a team like Xavier, we know they have a rep and we want to go in there and prove something."

SUITS AND SNEAKERS - Kellogg, Xavier coach Sean Miller and their staffs will be wearing sneakers on the sidelines as part of the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers awareness weekend. Coaches around the country will forgo fancy footwear to raise awareness for the American Cancer Society. More information is available at cancer.org/coaches/

CHASING MILESTONES - Chris Lowe enters the game with two milestones in reach. With 593 career assists, he is only four behind Edgar Padilla, who is No. 2 on the UMass all-time list. Lowe also needs 17 points to become the Minutemen's 40th 100-point scorer.

With 1,141 career points Harris is No. 28 on the Minutemen's career scoring list. He only needs 10 points to crack the top 25 as Lari Ketner (1,148), Will Herndon (1,148) and Rodger Twitchell (1,151) are all within reach.

#10 Xavier 82, Massachusetts 80
From UMass Athletics, 1/31/2009

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Massachusetts set a pedal-to-the-metal pace on offense and kept it a game by forcing Xavier into a season-high 23 turnovers, but couldn't break through in the closing minutes. Ricky Harris led the Minutemen with 17 points as four players scored in double-figures. Chris Lowe netted 16 points, missing a free throw on purpose with 3.6 seconds, but Tony Gaffney (9 points, 12 rebounds) missed a tip at the end which rimmed out. Xavier is now 19-2 overall, 7-0 in the A-10.

Derrick Brown matched his career high with 23 points Saturday, and No. 10 Xavier used its balance and free-throw shooting to hold on for its 10th straight win.

B.J. Raymond added 22 points and C.J. Anderson had 19 for the Musketeers (19-2, 7-0), who remained unbeaten atop the Atlantic 10. This one was in doubt down to the final rebound. Anderson got that off Chris Lowe's purposely missed free throw with 3 seconds left.

The shot clock rarely came into play in a fast-paced game of catch the ball and shoot -- a pace that suits UMass but not the Musketeers. Brown, Raymond and Anderson were a combined 24-for-32 from the field, and made the biggest plays in the closing minutes.

The Minutemen stayed in the game by exploiting Xavier's biggest weakness -- a propensity for sloppy passes. UMass scored three straight baskets off turnovers early in the second half. Harris had a driving layup and a 3-pointer, and Lowe had a steal and layup that tied it at 58 with 11 minutes left.

There were three ties and six lead changes down the stretch, with neither team ahead by more than three points until the final minute. Raymond's 3 and Anderson's putback put Xavier ahead to stay, 78-74 with 53 seconds left.

Harris responded with a 3-pointer, then missed another one with 10 seconds to go. Raymond got the rebound and made both free throws for an 80-77 lead. Brown added two free throws.

Rather than let Lowe try to take a 3-pointer that would tie it, Xavier fouled him with 3 seconds left. He made the first and, after a timeout, missed the second, hoping UMass could get a tying putback. The ball was slapped around and Anderson came down with it.

The points piled up fast in the first half. UMass hit nine of its first 13 shots, while Xavier went 9-of-14. It didn't take either team long to find an open shot and make it.

Xavier's player with the can't-miss touch temporarily took over the game.

Brown had a game this season when he didn't miss, going 6-for-6 from the field and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line in a win over Saint Louis on Jan. 8. He made his first eight shots on Saturday, including a 3-pointer that started Xavier's nine-point run in the first half.

His three-point play off a driving dunk made it 41-31 with 2:52 left in the half, the biggest lead of the game. Xavier shot 68 percent in the first half against one of the conference's worst perimeter defenses.

* Derrick Brown tied his career high in scoring with 23 points. He also scored 23 against Miami (11-29-08). He also matched his career high with four blocked shots. He also had four blocks against Richmond (3-8-08).

QUOTES

UMass Head Coach Derek Kellogg
"I thought that was a fantastic basketball game. Xavier is a team that can do some special things with their size and athleticism. Our guys competed for 40 minutes. Our guys showed courage. There was an article somewhere about what toughness is, and I'm sure our guys got a good look at it [today]."

"We stepped up the [defensive] heat in the second half. They were too big and too athletic for us to guard close to the basket. So we decided to pick up their guards in the full court."

On Chris Lowe's missed free throw attempt and potential game-tying tip-in "We were trying to get the ball to hit off the left side of the basket and we got a pretty good tip at it."

On XU's potential in the post season "They have the talent to go deep into the tournament. They're well coached and they're on a mission. They're big and physical."

Xavier Head Coach Sean Miller
"I thought UMass did an excellent job. Their offense and their game plan were excellent. I think they are very difficult for us to guard. [Tony] Gaffney is a unique player. I thought that at times he was very disruptive defensively. For us to be able to win today's game says a lot about our team."

"All three guys [C.J. Anderson, B.J. Raymond, and Derrick Brown] together had one of their best games. A huge three-point shot by B.J. C.J., just `willing' it when things weren't going our way. We are in the winner's circle and we could have been in the other circle."

On B.J. Raymond's game "I'd be one dumb coach not to call a play for him [at the end of the game]. I can't remember too many players in the country playing better than him right now. He had a huge shot coming out of the timeout that allowed us to win."

"A-number one, when you're a guard, you have to take care of the ball. When they get rattled it's hard for the other guys to get going. But they [Raymond, Brown, Anderson] more than made up for what happened today."

Pushed, XU pulls out late victory
Raymond's big 3 helps avert upset
By Shannon Russell, Cincinnati Enquirer, 2/1/2009

It was a game so intense, so aggressive, that it had the trappings of an upset.

Fans stood nervously at Cintas Center Saturday afternoon. Some wiped their brows. Others, like Massachusetts' bench players, fidgeted after Luke Bonner's tip-in gave the Minutemen a 74-73 lead with 2:21 to play.

Their linked arms were for naught, as B.J. Raymond buried a 3-pointer after an ensuing timeout and No. 10 Xavier escaped with an 82-80 victory in an Atlantic 10 Conference thriller before a crowd of 10,250.

There was plenty of drama after the Raymond 3-pointer, from a C.J. Anderson stickback to a UMass rally that shaved the Musketeers' lead to one with seven seconds remaining. Derrick Brown widened the gap with two free throws that gave XU an 82-79 advantage.

Then, this: Dante Jackson fouled UMass' Chris Lowe with 3.6 seconds to play.

Lowe sank his first shot and missed the second. But Tony Gaffney missed the tip, Anderson recovered the ball, and time expired.

"If one of them would have gotten the ball, all they would have had to do is turn around and lay it up," Anderson said. "As long as somebody on our team got it ... luckily that was me."

It was an invigorating win for a Musketeers team that had defeated its previous four foes by an average of 18 points. Xavier (19-2, 7-0 Atlantic 10) won its 10th straight game and extended its home-court conference win streak to 20.

Brown tied a career high with 23 points and had eight rebounds and a career-high-tying four blocks. Raymond added 22 points, five boards, two assists, two steals and a block. Anderson contributed 19 points and six rebounds.

Coach Sean Miller said it was a no-brainer to draw up a play for Raymond in the timeout preceding his clutch 3-pointer.

"I would have to be one dumb coach not to call a play for him right now, especially in big moments," Miller said. "Not only is he playing well, but let's face it: Some of his greatest play has happened in the biggest moments that we needed."

Raymond credited a good pass from Anderson and a methodical shooting approach to the make.

He was a key cog in a trio of upperclassmen that remained poised as it guided the Muskies to victory. Miller said it was among the best games he's seen Anderson, Brown and Raymond play at Xavier.

"Leadership isn't just rah-rah when no one's looking. It's performance when everybody's looking. And the reason they're respected in our team is what they do it in the game, in games like this. And those three guys were outstanding today," Miller said.

Brown took advantage of smaller defenders to go 6-for-6 from the field in the first half and 8-for-10 for the game. He and Raymond combined for seven 3-pointers, while Anderson procured four assists and a steal.

They propelled Xavier past a mysterious UMass team (7-12, 2-4) that defeated then-No. 25 Kansas earlier this season and recently lost to Charlotte and La Salle - two A-10 teams the Muskies decimated.

Xavier's depth and talent gave it strength through seven ties and 14 lead changes. The Muskies produced a season-best 59.6 percent shooting effort and a season-high 85.7 percent showing from the free-throw line.

There was one stat that gave Miller pause. UMass scored 36 points off XU's season-high 23 turnovers.

"It's almost impossible to get 36 points off turnovers. And then for that team to win ... that's why I go back to C.J. (Anderson), B.J. (Raymond) and Derrick (Brown's) performance. We needed something superlative from them to win in spite of our turnovers, and they came through."

XU notebook
XU point guard Holloway re-injures left foot in win
By Shannon Russell, Cincinnati Enquirer, 2/1/2009

Xavier point guard Terrell Holloway may have re-injured his left foot during the 82-80 win over Massachusetts Saturday.

The freshman suffered a low-grade stress fracture earlier this season and missed multiple weeks, including two games, while recovering. Coach Sean Miller suspected Holloway hurt the same foot Saturday after UMass center Luke Bonner fell on him.

"From that point on, he just didn't look right. I could tell," Miller said. "In fairness to Terrell, he was trying to do his best today. He just couldn't go."

Holloway played 12 first-half minutes and five second-half minutes. He finished with three points, three turnovers and an assist.

Miller said Holloway will undergo X-rays and believes the player's injury is "around the same place" as the original stress fracture.

The Muskies, in the meantime, made quick game-time adjustments in Holloway's absence.

"When it happens in a game, you don't have time to reorganize everybody. All of a sudden you're playing without a point guard and everyone's role changes," Miller said.

Dante Jackson moved to the point but had a rough day at the hands of UMass' seasoned backcourt. He had five turnovers, two assists, and four rebounds.

TIPPING POINT: UMass called a timeout between Chris Lowe's free throws with 3.6 seconds remaining. First-year Minutemen coach Derek Kellogg said the goal was for Lowe to shoot his last free throw to the left and "clear that side out."

"I'm not sure if the ball actually went there, but we did get a pretty good tip at it for them knowing exactly what we were trying to do. We've actually practiced that quite frequently over that past couple of weeks and have had done a lot of late-game situations," Kellogg said.

CONFIDENCE BOOSTER: Kellogg is a former John Calipari assistant and a good friend of Miller's. The XU coach spent time to talking to Kellogg's players after Saturday's win. "I think those guys are really good players. I hope that today's game can almost catapult them into winning some other games and giving them confidence, because I think anyone who watched today's game clearly has to leave with an impression that UMass is a good team," Miller said.

MISTAKE MELEE: When asked about XU's season-high 23 turnovers, B.J. Raymond said the team has "just got to do better."

"We had a lull in the first half and in the second half of just making careless plays with the basketball," Raymond said. "We need to make sure that that's priority No. 1 around here."

No. 10 Xavier outlasts Minutemen
By Scott Feldman, Massachusetts Daily Collegian Staff, 2/1/2009

For an instant, it appeared the Massachusetts men’s basketball team was headed to overtime against the best team in the Atlantic 10 when Chris Lowe nailed a game-tying 3-pointer with four seconds left.

However, a referee called a foul on the floor before the shot was attempted, the 3-pointer was nullified and Lowe had to shoot two free-throws with the Minutemen down by three.

Lowe made the first and intentionally missed the second to give UMass an opportunity to grab the rebound. Tony Gaffney almost tipped it in, but it bounced just out of the hoop as UMass lost an 82-80 nail-biter to No. 10 Xavier (19-2, 7-0 A-10 Saturday afternoon in Cincinnati, Ohio.

“We were trying to get the ball to hit off the left side of the basket and we got a pretty good tip at it,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said, looking for a similar last-second tip-in off a missed free throw that the Minutemen got against Boston College on Dec. 6 that forced overtime.

It was a cruel finish for the Minutemen (7-12, 2-4 A-10), who played Xavier down to the wire and forced the Musketeers into a season-high 23 turnovers and scored 36 points off the takeaways.

“We stepped up the [defensive] heat in the second half. They were too big and too athletic for us to guard close to the basket,” Kellogg said. “So we decided to pick up their guards in the full court.”

Xavier shot a scorching 59.6 percent from the field in the game and got big games out of Derrick Brown (tied his career-high with 23 points), B.J. Raymond (22) and C.J. Anderson (19) to lead the Musketeers to their 10th straight victory.

Ricky Harris led the Minutemen with 17 points with Lowe right behind him with 16 points to go along with seven assists. Luke Bonner (14) and Anthony Gurley (10) also added double-figures for the Minutemen.

The game featured 14 lead changes throughout and neither team gained a lead of more than three in the last nine minutes until Xavier went up 78-74 with under one minute remaining. Harris hit a 3-pointer to close the gap to one point with 45 seconds left, but on UMass’ next possession missed the potential go-ahead 3-pointer with 12 seconds left in the game. Xavier grabbed the rebound and the game turned into a free-throw shooting contest in which the Minutemen were always one-point behind.

Gaffney nearly earned yet another double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds, but despite his efforts the Musketeers out-rebounded UMass 37-26 – although the Minutemen did get 13 offensive rebounds while Xavier grabbed seven.

This game was played at a blistering pace early and it seemed as though neither team could miss. The Minutemen opened up the game shooting 9-for-13 as even Gaffney hit a 3-pointer, but Xavier made 9-for-14 as both sides traded leads with defense being an afterthought.

It appeared Xavier was starting to run away with the game late in the first half as it opened up a 10-point lead with 1 minute, 20 seconds left in the first half. UMass entered the half down 44-37.

Xavier’s lead hovered between six and eight points until UMass went on a 10-2 run started by a Bonner 3-pointer with 13:24 left in the game. Harris then scored five unanswered points and Lowe stole the ball for an easy layup to tie the game at 58 with 11 minutes remaining. From then on the game was tightly contested until the final seconds.

The Minutemen were looking to add another win over a top team in their conference – they have wins over Dayton (75-62 on Jan. 10) and Temple (79-75 on Jan. 17). A win against Xavier would have given them wins over the three top teams in the conference in RPI.

UMass will look to regroup when it hosts Richmond on Feb. 4.

Games notes

Lowe now has 999 career points, the free-throw he intentionally missed would have given him 1,000 … Saturday’s loss dropped the Minutemen to 1-8 on the road this season … Gaffney has led UMass in rebounds in 14 of their 19 games this season.

Game UMass can't break through
From the Daily Hampshire Gazette, 2/2/2009

CINCINNATI - Chris Lowe thought for a moment that a barrier holding back the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team had been broken Saturday afternoon.

That moment passed, however, and the Minutemen lost their third game in a row, 82-80, to No. 10 Xavier before 10,250 fans at the Cintas Center.

The fourth loss in the last five games had a familiar feel for UMass as the Minutemen were unable to make necessary plays in the final minutes of a game they were in position to win. Trailing 78-77 with fewer than 15 seconds to play, Lowe dribbled the length of the court after a Xavier missed shot and found guard Ricky Harris for an open 3-point shot in the right corner.

Harris' shot hit the rim and bounced out. Xavier made all four of its free throw attempts down the stretch to survive the Minutemen's bid for a second win against a ranked opponent this season.

"It was a great shot," said Lowe. "I know we were in transition, it was a two-on-two and the other man collapsed so I kicked it out to Ricky and I thought if Ricky hit it, the game was done. I think it would have taken the energy out of them but, hey, he missed it. Great shooters are going to miss some and they're going to hit some.

"We just have to learn to close games out in crunch time," Lowe added.

UMass fell to 7-12 overall and 2-4 in the conference while Xavier's 10th win in a row improves its record to 18-2 and a league-best 7-0. It was Xavier's 20th consecutive win in the Cintas Center against Atlantic 10 opponents.

"I didn't realize just about every game in the Atlantic 10 would come down to the last three minutes," said first-year UMass coach Derek Kellogg.

He added about the Minutemen, "I hope that they take out that that is the way you play every time out, whether it's a practice, a shoot-around, a walk-through or a game. You play that way every time. It's not here nor there or sometimes, it's not you bring your "A" game when it's convenient or because the game is on TV. Every day out you play that hard and you compete at that level, you share the basketball, you stay together as a team.

"I think that is still a learning curve for us of that's how you do it every time out. That's what the great teams do, that's what the more mature teams that are tough do."

Four players finished in double figures for UMass, led by Harris' 17 points. Lowe had 16 points and seven assists, while center Luke Bonner scored 14 points and guard Anthony Gurley had 10 points. Forward Tony Gaffney added nine points and 12 rebounds for the Minutemen.

UMass forced 23 turnovers and scored 36 points off those takeaways. The Minutemen, who shot just 36.2 percent in a 69-64 overtime loss at Charlotte and 33.9 percent in a 62-64 loss against La Salle in their last two games, improved against Xavier at 41.8 percent. That is the third highest percentage allowed by the Musketeers this season.

UMass turned the ball over just 11 times and outscored Xavier 36-32 in the paint, a product of the Minutemen's dribble-drive penetration offense.

"I really respect those guys," said Xavier coach Sean Miller. "It's tough when you go through a coaching change, number one. They had a very good season last year and Derek Kellogg is a good friend of mine and is going to do a great job, but he brings a different style.

"I think those guys are really good players," Miller added. "I hope that today's game can almost catapult them into winning some other games and giving them confidence because I think anyone who watched today's game clearly has to leave with an impression that UMass is a good team."

The Minutemen trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half and were down eight points with 13 minutes left to play but rallied to lead 67-64 with 7 minutes, 19 seconds remaining when Harris drove down the lane and scored on a layup. UMass took its final lead, 74-73, with 2:27 remaining when Bonner tipped in a missed shot by Harris.

Xavier regained the lead for good with 2:08 to play when senior guard B.J. Raymond made his fourth 3-pointer of the game.

A putback by forward C.J. Anderson with 53 seconds left gave the Musketeers a 78-74 lead. Harris hit one 3-pointer but missed another with 10 seconds to play. Lowe was fouled on the final possession for UMass. He made the first free throw and missed the second on purpose, but Gaffney could not convert the potential game-tying tip-in.

Raymond scored 22 points for Xavier, which was led by forward Derrick Brown with 23. Anderson added 19 points. The trio combined to make 24 of their 34 field goal attempts.

Xavier is the third ranked team # and third team from last season's Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament # that UMass has played this season, all of them away from the Mullins Center. The Minutemen defeated defending national champion Kansas 61-60 Dec. 13 on a neutral court at Kansas City, and lost 80-58 Nov. 17 at defending national runner-up Memphis.

UMass returns home to host Richmond at 7 p.m. Wednesday and St. Joseph's at 3 p.m. Feb. 8.

"We can play with anyone in the country, but we have to show that every single day," Bonner said. "It's pretty frustrating. This was a tough environment to play in and a couple of things could have gone differently.

"When it's a small difference in the game, when there were so many small things we could have capitalized on," he added. "I think that's what hurts the most. A lot of guys will reflect after the game on those one or two plays they could have made."
