MHERST - University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg said if his team does not build off its strong showing in Saturday's near-upset at No. 10 Xavier, then the 82-80 defeat at the Cintas Center was just another loss.
"We're going to try to use that Xavier game as a springboard for the rest of the season, not just a reason for us to be excited that we played well in a loss," Kellogg said. "This is a springboard for us to see if we can do something special in the last regular season games and in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
"I'm interested to see if our guys will play and compete every time out, no matter who the opponent is," he added.
Kellogg will get his first look at how his team responds at 7 tonight when the Minutemen (7-12, 2-4 Atlantic 10) host Richmond at the Mullins Center.
Kellogg said he is optimistic. "I feel like our team is in a good frame of mind, ready to play and compete."
The Spiders have had a back-and-forth season reflected accurately in their 11-10 overall and 3-3 Atlantic 10 record.
Richmond has not won or lost more than two games in a row all season. That doesn't bode well for UMass as the Spiders have lost two straight heading into tonight's game.
This will be Kellogg's first game as a head coach against Richmond, and he will try to match up against its Princeton-style, slowdown offense.
"Teams that play and master that style of play have been very effective and have done some good things," Kellogg said. "It's unique. It's a tempo-control style and it's hard to get teams to play their way out of it because they usually have five guys that can all pass, catch, shoot and put the ball on the floor a little bit.
"More often than not you end up playing a half-court game, trying to defend and squeak out a win at the end."
The Spiders were dealt a blow before the season began as junior big man Dan Geriot tore his anterior cruciate ligament in a summer league game. Geriot led the Spiders in scoring last year with 14.3 points to go with 5.5 rebounds per game.
Sophomore Justin Harper has emerged as a presence in Geriot's absence. The 6-foot-10 big man is averaging 10.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game and he may challenge Tony Gaffney for the conference's most improved player honors.
Still, Geriot's presence would have helped on the glass as Richmond is among the league's worse rebounding teams. Opponents have averaged 3.5 more boards per game than the Spiders.
Junior wing David Gonzalvez is coming off a 36-point game in a 74-65 loss at Temple on Saturday. He leads the Spiders with 16.7 points per game (sixth in the A-10) and had 20 against the Minutemen last year. Sophomore Kevin Anderson has built off its strong freshman year, averaging 14.6 points per game.
Chris Lowe enters the game needing just one point to become the 40th 1,000-point career scorer at UMass, which will put him in a club that includes four of his current or former teammates - Rashaun Freeman, Ricky Harris, Gary Forbes and Stephane Lasme.
"That doesn't matter," Lowe said. "Right now I just want to get some Ws."
Lowe, who has been exclusively a point guard during his career, played at shooting guard at times against Xavier with freshman David Gibbs running the point. That lineup, which was intended to take some pressure off Lowe, had some success against the Musketeers and will likely be used in stretches again.
"It's something we've been using in practice," Kellogg said. "Gibbs is becoming more comfortable with the college game and is understanding what I expect of him. He's done some very, very good things. It's been in pieces, but now he's doing it in stretches. I'm excited to continue to watch him grow and progress."

ith wins against some of the top teams in the Atlantic 10 and a two-point loss to then-No. 10 Xavier, games against middle-of-the-pack Atlantic 10 opponents should be easy for the Massachusetts mens basketball team.
So far this season, that has not been the case for UMass coach Derek Kellogg and his Minutemen. Despite those strong games, UMass has lost to the likes of Toledo and Charlotte.
Although the Minutemen are coming off arguably one of their best games of the year, an 82-80 loss to Xavier, todays opponent, Richmond, will not be taken lightly by Kellogg and his team.
Ive had the opportunity to watch them quite a bit on tape, Kellogg said during his weekly A-10 teleconference. Quite frankly, Im a little nervous.
While Xavier (19-2, 7-0 A-10) boasted a perfect record in conference play and is nationally ranked, the same cant be said of the Spiders. Richmond (11-10, 3-3 A-10) is just a game over .500 overall and is .500 in the A-10.
Richmond still holds a better record than UMass (7-12, 2-4 A-10) but on a much easier schedule. The Minutemen currently have the 21st toughest schedule in the nation as opposed to Richmonds schedule that ranks 135.
The Spiders are built around a youthful core including three sophomore starters and just three seniors on the team. Senior Jarhon Giddings is the only senior starter, on a team that returned almost every player and finished fourth last season in the A-10.
Junior swingman, David Gonzalvez, leads the team with 16.7 points per game and 4.4 rebounds per game and shoots 50 percent from the floor. Last years A-10 Rookie of the Year, Kevin Anderson, has also been an integral player this year for the Spiders. The sophomore is second on the team in scoring with 14.6 ppg and also grabs 2.3 rebounds per game.
Three of Richmonds five starters average double figures in points per game, but the Spiders lack an inside presence after the loss of forward/center Dan Geriot. The junior led Richmond in points (14.3 ppg) and rebounds (5.5 rpg) last season but injured his knee in a summer league competition and will miss the entire season.
Richmonds lack of an inside game could work to UMass advantage. With Tony Gaffney (10.89 rpg) and Luke Bonner (5.42 rpg) both averaging more rebounds than the Spiders leading rebounder (Justin Harper 5.1 rpg).
Despite the lack of an inside game, Kellogg acknowledges that the Spiders do play a unique style of basketball and the Minutemen need to be prepared.
Were going to have to do some things to make sure were aware of how theyre trying to play and what theyre trying to do, Kellogg said.
Kellogg also noted during his weekly teleconference that the Spiders dont play at a slow tempo but are a very patient team.
They wait for you to make a mistake, and then they capitalize, Kellogg added.
Last year, while Kellogg was an assistant to John Calipari at Memphis, he saw Richmond when the then-No. 3 Tigers defeated the Spiders 80-63. According to Kellogg, even though the Spiders lost by 17, they controlled the tempo of the game.
The Minutemen will look to defend their home court where they are 2-1 in A-10 play, compared to their 0-3 record on the road.

MHERST, Mass. - After combining for just three points in the first half, Ricky Harris and Tony Gaffney combined to score 33 second half points to spark UMass to a 80-71 victory over Richmond on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center on the 16th anniversary of the building's opening. Senior Chris Lowe scored his 1,000th career point in the first half and recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. The Minutemen go to 8-12 on the season and 3-4 in the Atlantic 10, while the Spiders fall to 11-11 and 3-4 in conference.
Harris scored 21 of his 24 points in the second half, while Gaffney netted all 12 of his points after the break.
A player for both sides scored their 1,000th point in the game, with Lowe getting his in the first half and Richmond's David Gonzalvez getting his in the second half, finishing with 18 points. Kevin Anderson also scored 18 for the Spiders.
Both teams shot the ball well from outside as UMass was 9-for-18 from 3-point range (49% overall) and Richmond was 7-for-17 from behind the arc (47.5% overall).
The offenses were slow to get things going early on with the score knotted at six after five minutes of play. At the 14:29 mark, Lowe drove the lane and made a spinning layup for his 1,000th and 1,001st career points. He became the 41st Minuteman to reach the 1,000-point mark and the first to ever combine 1,000 points with 600 assists.
After Lowe's basket, the Spiders went on a 8-0 run to take a 15-8 lead with 12:44 left in the half, but the Minutemen quickly came back with an even bigger run of their own. A Matt Glass 3-pointer started a 15-2 UMass run over a 4:38 span giving the home team a 25-19 lead with 6:20 left in the first half.
Richmond outscored UMass, 12-2, between the 5:16 and 2:35 marks of the half to take the lead, but the Minutemen used a 3-pointer by Luke Bonner and free throw by Lowe to score the last four points of the half and head to the locker room with the game tied, 32-32.
Bonner led all scorers in the first half with seven points, while Tyrell Lynch led the way on the boards with five rebounds to go along with four points. The Spiders were paced six points each from Kevin Smith and Ryan Butler.
The Minutemen controlled the first seven minutes of the second half, outscoring the Spiders, 15-9, and out-rebounding them, 11-1, to take a 47-41 lead.
Harris then got hot for UMass, scoring 10 points in a four and a half minute span with a 3-pointer from the corner giving the Minutemen a 12-point lead, 71-59, with 4:37 to go.
The Spiders tried to use a fullcourt press to come back in the closing minutes, but the Minutemen were able to knock down enough free throws down the stretch to ensure the victory.
The Minutemen are back in action on Sunday when they host Saint Joseph's in a 3 p.m. A-10 match-up at the Mullins Center. The 100 Years of UMass Basketball will continue with the 1990s Celebration commemorating the Minutemen teams of that decade, including the 1995-96 Final Four team.
Chris Lowe scored his 1,000th career point on a driving, spinning lay-up at 14:29. He became the 41st player in UMass history to break the barrier. He joins Ricky Harris for a 1,000-point backcourt. Lowe now has 1,012 points in his career after scoring 13 in the game. He is now 40th in career scoring, passing Stephane Lasme (1,011) on the all-time list. It was Lowe's 11th game this season with double-figures.
Lowe also had 10 assists for the seventh time this season and 13th time in his career, all in his last 33 games.
Ricky Harris (21) and Tony Gaffney (12) nearly combined to outscore 39-33 Richmond in the second half by themselves. Harris (3) and Gaffney combined (0) three first half points and went for 33 in the second half.
Ricky Harris has scored in double-figures in 18 of 20 games this season with 24. Harris moved to 24th in career scoring as he now has 1,182. He passed Rafer Giles (1,163).
Harris had his ninth game of the season with 20 or more points and 27th of his career with 24.
Harris moved to fifth in made 3-pointers with five in the game, giving him 182. He passed Lorenzo Sutton (178).
Harris had four steals, one off his career-high of five.
Tony Gaffney had his 10th game this season and 14th in his career with 10 or more points as he had 12.
Luke Bonner drew three charges, giving him 19 draws in just 13 games.
Matt Glass had just his third-ever 2-point field goal on a tip-in at 9:05 of the first half. Of his first 33 career field goals, 31 were 3-pointers.
Head Coach Derek Kellogg's general thoughts
That was a good basket ball game for our team; I thought we got a great team effort. I loved the way that Tyrell Lynch, Matt Glass, Gary Correia, and Daivd Gibbs played in the first half to keep us in the game. I thought that those guys did a great job with Gaffney being in foul trouble and Ricky not really clicking on offensively. For us to be tied at the half, with the style of play and the way things were going, I thought we did a pretty good job. That enabled Ricky to come out and have a great second half. Chris Lowe played well, Tony Gaffney was fantastic, and Luke Bonner did what Luke Bonner does. He made big plays down the stretch. I liked the way Anthony Gurley played this evening. He covered the other team's best player again. He didn't really force his offense. I thought he passed up some tough shots and took the open ones. This was a good game to get us back in the winning column. I think this team deserves it. We are playing pretty good basketball right now. I think we have strung together a couple of games where we have competed. The outcome hasn't always been great, but at the same token we put ourselves in a position to win every time out.
Coach Kellogg on defending Princeton offense
The funny thing about it is that the coaches were the ones running the Princeton offense, and I don't think we could do it as fast as them, but it was good for what we were trying to do. It's nice when you put a game plan together and a style of play, and your team follows through with game plan. I thought we did a nice job. I don't believe they got very many backdoor cuts, but they did get some nice threes. I would prefer them knocking down some long threes over easy lay-ups.
Coach Kellogg on bench play
It's been great. We've done a ton of individual work as of late. We've really concentrated on ball handling, getting past the defender, and getting in the lane and making plays. The thing about college coaching is you can run a bunch of sets and put guys in position to make plays, but I think you have to have the ability to get into the lane and make plays. In the end, I think it was fantastic for our guy's confidence and their toughness with the ball. Gibbs is much more confident with the ball, Anthony Gurley has gotten better, Ricky Harris has gotten a hundred times better handling the ball in the past two weeks. Chris Lowe is at times the best player on the floor at making plays. Practice has been very, very good. We're not going long, but we're going hard, and focusing on individual skill development right now.
Chris Lowe on reaching the century mark in points:
It's a great milestone. Its great to be included with Ricky (Harris), Gary Forbes, Jim McCoy, Marcus Camby, Dr, J, Rashaun Freeman, Steph(ane) Lasme. I accomplished it, now its over, I just want to start getting some W's.
Chris Lowe on how he reached the milestone:
I was just trying to make something happen, being aggressive on the court.
Ricky Harris on his confidence as a shooter:
I don't let misses get to me. I am a confident shooter. If I missed the first one, I know that the next one is going down. When I miss a I don't really let it effect me. When I let that happen I tend to lose focus on the defensive end and become the weak link. I try to let that go. The coach Jackson is always stressing that in coach, let the misses go, let the misses go.
Harris on diversifying his game:
We have been doing a lot of ball handling drills in practice. Doing a lot of ball handling drills in practice. I am more confident in my ability to dribble the basketball. A lot of teams are playing me for my jump shot so I need to out smart them and use one dribble pull ups or drive to the basket. Coach is always telling me that at practice.
Gaffney on big second half
I was pretty fresh, I came out of warm ups feeling pretty good, the best I have felt in the second half all year. I just wanted to help the team out because I did absolutely nothing in the first half.
Gaffney on contributions from the bench in the first half
We would not have won this game if not for our bench. If not for Matt Glass, Tyrell Lynch, David Gibbs and Gary Correia we are not here right now talking about a win. We saw this coming, this is how we have been practicing for the last 2 weeks. Those guys have been bringing a ton of enthusiasm and energy to our team. We are a dangerous team if we have a bench like that, hopefully that continues for the rest of the way.
MHERST - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team waited for Ricky Harris to find the range and Tony Gaffney to find the floor in the second half before pulling away from Richmond Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
Harris scored 21 of his 24 points after intermission in the Minutemen's 80-71 victory. That included eight in a 10-2 run midway through the second half that turned a two-point lead into a double-digit edge at 61-51 with 6 minutes, 46 seconds remaining.
"Ricky has done a good job figuring out different ways to score," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "He's getting into the lane and getting to the free-throw line. When you do those things, the 3s start falling. He's a great scorer. He's going to find a way to put the ball in the basket."
Gaffney played just five first-half minutes and had no points as a pair of early fouls earned him an extended stay on the bench. He put his fresh legs to good use in the second half, scoring 12 points after intermission.
"I was pretty fresh," Gaffney said. "That was probably the best I felt in the second half all year. I just wanted to help the team out #cause I did absolutely nothing in the first half."
For much of the second half, Harris and Gaffney were outscoring the Spiders by themselves.
Senior Chris Lowe, who registered his 1,000th career point in the first half, was three rebounds shy of a triple-double. He finished with 13 points, 10 assists and seven boards.
Spider junior David Gonzalvez, who got his 1,000th career point in the second half, and Kevin Anderson each had 18 points to lead Richmond.
Practicing for Princeton
In practice Monday and Tuesday, the UMass coaching staff served as the practice squad by simulating the Spiders' Princeton-style offense. That prepared the Minutemen well enough defensively to deny Richmond any baskets on backdoor cuts, a staple of the Princeton style.
"We didn't run it as fast as them, but our guys got the principles of what they were trying to do," Kellogg said.
UMass (8-12, 3-4 Atlantic 10) returns to action at 3 p.m. Sunday when they host Saint Joseph's at the Mullins Center.
The Spiders (11-11, 3-4 A-10) host Saint Louis at 2 p.m. Sunday.

"I love the way that those guys played in the first half to keep us in the game," Kellogg said. "I thought those guys did a great job keeping us in the game with Gaffney being in foul trouble and Ricky not clicking offensively."
Gaffney agreed. "We wouldn't have won this game if it wasn't for our bench," he said.
After snapping their three game losing streak, the UMass players spent most of the press conference joking and teasing each other, but Harris was serious as he walked out.
"We're just happy to have a win," he said.

MHERST - Chris Lowe's 1,000th career point came on a signature shot Wednesday night.
The University of Massachusetts senior guard, who entered the game with 999 career points, drove into the lane 5 minutes and 31 seconds into in the first half. He spun right and put up a left-handed floater that swished to make him the 41st member of the Minutemen's 1,000-point club.
He's the only member of that group to also have 600 assists.

Lowe finished with 13 points to lift him past former teammate Stephane Lasme (1,011) into No. 40 on the career list with 1,012. Lowe was more happy with the 80-71 victory over Richmond than the milestone.
"I accomplished it. Now it's over I just want to start getting some Ws," said Lowe, who had his seventh 10-assist game this season. He has 610 in his career. He's 23 away from matching Carl Smith as the Minutemen's all-time leader in the category.
David Gonzalvez, the Spiders' leading scorer, entered the game needing nine points for 1,000. He didn't reach the milestone until there was 4:22 remaining and the game was mostly out of reach.
SEASON-LOW CROWD - The crowd of 3,439 was the lowest of the season as 36 fewer people were at the Mullins Center than attended the Dec. 20 win over Hofstra.
LUKE CHARGES - UMass senior big man Luke Bonner continues to pile up the charges taken. With three more against the Spiders, Bonner has seven in the past two games and 19 on the season in 13 games played. Bonner added seven points and eight rebounds Wednesday.
"My freshman year whenever I got beat off the dribble I knew Steph (Lasme) was going to block it," said Ricky Harris, who complimented Bonner while teasing Lowe at the same time. "This year whenever a guy beats Chris off the dribble, I know Tony (Gaffney) is going to block it or Luke is going to be there to take a charge."
After smirking at Harris, Lowe praised the senior big man. "Luke probably leads the country in charges taken."
MR. THREE - Matt Glass had his third career two-point field goal. He has 31 career 3s.
NEXT UP - UMass hosts Saint Joseph's at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Hawks are 13-8 (6-1 Atlantic 10) after beating George Washington 66-58 Wednesday.

MHERST - Sixteen years ago Wednesday night, the University of Massachusetts left behind the cozy Curry Hicks Cage to open the brand new William D. Mullins Memorial Center.
The building has hosted concerts ranging from the Boston Pops to Counting Crows to 50 Cent. It's housed wrestling, Broadway shows, the circus, and Jehovah's Witness services.
But on most nights the Mullins Center has been home to UMass men's and women's basketball and ice hockey. Those three primary tenants have delivered quite a few memorable games.
In honor of the 16th anniversary here are the 16 best UMass games ever played in the Mullins Center.
16. Jan. 16, 1999 - Men's basketball: UMass 64, No. 15 Kansas 60 - Arguably the biggest win in Bruiser Flint's UMass tenure.
15. Feb. 3, 1994 - Men's basketball: UMass 62, Florida State 58 - Before Tim Duncan visited, Seminoles guard Charlie Ward was the Mullins Center's highest-profile guest.
14. Feb. 28, 1996 - Men's basketball: UMass 68, Saint Joseph's 66 (OT)- Any UMass fan who complains about Lenny Wirtz's call in the 1992 Tournament should remember that the officiating gods atoned when Rigo Nunez drew a game-saving charge that was better acting than anything Kevin Costner ever did.
13. March 10, 2006 - Hockey; UMass 5, Maine 2 - This win gave UMass a first-round series sweep in the Hockey East Tournament and all but clinched the Minutemen's berth in the NCAA Tournament.
12. Jan. 22, 1994 - Men's basketball: UMass 56, George Washington 55 - Marcus Camby's dunk in the closing seconds allows UMass to escape with the win.
11. Feb. 25, 2006 - Men's basketball: UMass 66, Dayton 47 - Former UMass coach John Calipari was the surprise visitor as the Mullins Center floor became Jack Leaman court.
10. Jan. 8, 2005 - Men's basketball: UMass 90, Xavier 86 (3 OT) - The smallest crowd in the history of the Mullins Center saw its longest game. Snow kept the fans away and they missed a classic, which will be forever remembered as the Big Deli game. Jeff Salovski, the 6-foot-10, 360-pound freshman big man, scored 12 of his 21 points in overtime as the Minutemen pulled off the upset.
9. March 13, 2007 - Men's basketball: UMass 89, Alabama 87 (OT) - Chris Lowe hit a jumper with 1.6 seconds left to cap a 19-point, seven-rebound, six assist night in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.
8. Feb. 4, 1993 - Men's basketball: UMass 64, West Virginia 59 (OT) - The grand opening of the new building turned out to be a terrific game as the Minutemen came from 11 points down to fend off the Mountaineers in overtime.
7. Nov. 24, 1995 - Women's basketball: UMass 65, No. 8 Stanford 56 - This game was billed as a homecoming for Cardinal star Jamila Wideman, a former Amherst Regional standout. UMass figured to be the Washington Generals to Stanford's Globetrotters, but behind Tez Kraft's 14 points, the Minutewomen stunned Stanford.
6. Jan. 18, 1995 - Hockey: UMass 4, No. 1 Maine 2 - This was the equivalent of New Jersey Institute of Technology beating North Carolina in men's basketball. Twenty-two months before this game the Minutemen had no program. A year before they were beating up on Division III schools. Maine on the other hand was No. 1 and dominant. Somehow UMass, helped by goaltender Brian Regan's 51 saves, delivered the stunning upset.
5. Dec. 8, 2006 - Hockey: UMass 2, No. 6 Boston College 1 - Matt Burto scored on a late breakaway to give UMass the upset win, a victory that helped earn the Minutemen a spot in the NCAA Tournament later on. In between periods, fans watched the Minuteman football team upset Montana.
4. Dec. 6, 2002 - Hockey: UMass 5, Boston University 4 (OT) - The Minutemen trailed 4-1 in the second period against a school that had dominated them over the years. But three third-period goals and Chris Capraro's game-winner in overtime gave UMass a turning-point win in program history. Every fan who left the building that night knew that the Minutemen weren't the Hockey East kick-arounds any longer.
3. Dec. 9, 2004 - Men's basketball: UMass 61, No. 7 UConn 59 - I have two enduring memories from the aftermath of this game. The first is Rashaun Freeman standing on the scorers' table smiling as the sea of court-rushing fans celebrated around him. The second is coach Steve Lappas, after hugging his wife, turning to me to say that Jack Leaman must have been looking down and looking out for the Minutemen that night.
2. Dec. 6, 1995 - Men's basketball: No. 3 UMass 60, No. 10 Wake Forest 46 - Camby vs. Duncan. In truth this wasn't much of a game, but the atmosphere was unmatched. For one night Amherst was the center of the college basketball universe. Dick Vitale headlined a gaggle of national media in the building. There's never been a tougher ticket in college hoops in the state of Massachusetts.
1. Feb. 13, 1994 - Men's basketball: No. 11 UMass 56, No. 8 Temple 55 - People still walk into the Mullins Center's green room and ask "Is this the John Chaney room?" Because the Temple coach attacked Calipari afterward, few people remember what a terrific game preceded that. Before Mike Williams helped block Chaney's path to Calipari, he hit a 10-footer in the closing seconds to clinch the win.

Five worst losses in the Mullins Center
To go with today's 16 best wins in the Mullins Center, here's the worst losses.
I kept this list to men's hoop. What makes a bad loss? A lousy result in a lousy season isn't that memorable. This list is in chronological order, not in order of magnitude.
Jan. 2, 2007 - Miami 72, UMass 71 - UMass wasn't far from NCAA at-large consideration. Switching this one would have helped a lot.
Feb. 17, 2001 - Temple 84, UMass 52 - An ABC audience and Dick Vitale watched the Minutemen get embarassed badly. UMass hasn't been on ABC since.
Dec. 29, 1999 - Davidson 75, UMass 66 (OT) - This one doesn't seem so bad now, but at the time UMass didn't lose games to mid-majors. Certainly not at home. Plus win this one and a 14-16 season becomes 15-15. At the time I wrote "uably the worst defeat since UMass fell to Division 2 UMass-Lowell in 1989."
Dec. 10, 1996 - Fresno State 102, UMass 81 - After this one the mystique of the Mullins Center took a sizable hit.
napping a three-game losing streak can give a team a sense of humor.
When Chris [Lowe] leaves I might slide over to point [guard] and lead the conference in assists, Ricky Harris joked after the Massachusetts mens basketball team beat Richmond, 80-71, Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
You guys are in trouble, Lowe added, shaking his head.
But for now, UMass (8-12, 3-4 Atlantic 10) likes Harris at shooting guard, especially when he has nights like Wednesdays performance. Harris came out of the gates sluggishly, scoring just three points in the first half on 1-of-4 shooting from the floor and 0-of-1 from 3-point distance.
[Harris] was a little bit frustrated and flustered in the first half, and I told him relax, just go play and it will come to you, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said after the game.
Harris did just that as he shot 6-of-9 in the second half, 5-of-7 from 3-point range, and scored 21 more points to give him a game-high 24. Harris took over the game with the Minutemen up 54-49 with nine minutes left in regulation. Over the next 4 minutes, 23 seconds, UMass went on a 17-10 run, building a 12-point lead, in which Harris scored 13 of the Minutemens 17 points.
The junior guard shot 4-for-4 (3-for-3 from 3-point range) during the stretch, including 2-for-2 from the foul line. He also added two steals.
Ricky has done a good job of figuring out different ways to score other than just shooting all 3s, Kellogg said. Hes put the ball down some, hes getting to the lane and getting to the free-throw line. And once you start doing all those things then the 3s start falling.
Harris wasnt the only one who put up sub-par numbers in the first half. Tony Gaffney, who found himself in early foul trouble with two personal fouls in the first 5:05 of the game, sat out the final 15 minutes of the first half. At that point, the forward had no points, one rebound and one block.
Despite two of the teams top three scorers managing just three combined points in the first half, the Minutemen found themselves knotted at 32 with the Spiders (11-11, 3-4 A-10) at the end of the first half.
I loved the way that Tyrell Lynch, Matt Glass, Gary Correia and David Gibbs played in the first half to keep us in the game, Kellogg said of his bench. I thought those guys did a great job with Gaffney being in foul trouble and Ricky Harris not really clicking offensively.
All four players to come of UMass bench contributed, especially in the first half, giving the Minutemen 13 points. With Gaffneys presence missing down low, Lynch stepped up adding four points and five rebounds in 10 minutes in the first half.
The Spiders were led by guards David Gonzalvez and last years Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, Kevin Anderson. Both gave Richmond 18 points, the only two players to score in double figures, with Gonzalvez reaching the 1,000 point mark for his career during the second half.
Kellogg was impressed with the defense of Anthony Gurley who was asked to defend the tough Gonzalvez all night. Gurley played the Spiders guard well, limiting him to just five points in the first half.
Snapping the teams three-game losing streak wasnt the only positive on the night; with 14:28 still remaining in the first half Lowe drove to the hoop with one of his signature moves dribble right then a spin move to beat his defender. When the shot fell, Lowe had registered his 1,000 and 1,001 career points in a UMass uniform.
Lowe became the 41st player in UMass history to accomplish the feat, joining Harris as the second player to reach the mark this season. The shot also made Lowe the first ever in UMass history to score 1,000 points and register 600 assists.
Lowe did all this on a night where he had his third double-double of the season, on 13 points and 10 assists. The 10 assists now gives him 610 for his career, 23 shy of tying Carl Smiths career record of 633.
