UMass Athletics - recap / notes
Daily Hampshire Gazette - recap
t has been over a month since the Massachusetts mens basketball team has won back-to-back games.
But after Wednesdays rout over Fordham, UMass will travel to St. Bonaventure on Saturday with hopes of putting together its first winning streak since it won four in a row from Dec. 10-23. Since that streak, UMass (9-13, 4-5 Atlantic 10) has won four times only to fall in its next game.
The Bonnies (12-11, 3-7 A-10) are in a similar situation as the Minutemen, in search of their first winning streak in over a month and in search of winning their first two consecutive A-10 games this season. The Bonnies had a strong start to the season, but have since slipped as they have dropped seven of their last nine, including a 78-65 loss at Fordham.
But despite St. Bonaventures recent struggles, UMass knows that they must be prepared, especially when playing on the road where the Minutemen are 2-8 on the year.
You know theyre a tough team. They beat Rutgers in the Big East, they got a couple of good wins in the A-10 and they got a good crowd, senior point guard Chris Lowe said before Thursdays practice. We definitely cant sleep on them.
UMass struggles on the road have resulted from its sloppy play down the stretch and the team has stressed its need to do the little things to get the win.
We just got to do all the little things right, hustle for rebounds, come up with the loose balls and that stuff, Lowe said.
Lowe always puts the team before his individual achievements, but Saturdays game could be a historic one for the point guard. After Lowes seven-assist effort at Fordham, he currently has 626 career assists and sits eight assists shy of the UMass record. Carl Smith had 633 from 1984-87.
Im not too worried about it because I know itll come, its another accomplishment along with scoring 1,000 points that Ive had in a great career here, Lowe said.
While the record may be in reach for the point guard, it may wait until the Minutemen return home on Wednesday. Lowes seven assist at Fordham are tied with his output at Xavier for the highest he has recorded all year on the road.
Lowes assist average on the road is just four assists per game, but at home the average doubles to over eight per game.
The Bonnies will come at UMass with a balanced attack that has four players who average in double figures in points. St. Bonaventure is led by freshman Andrew Nicholson, who leads the team with 13.5 points per game and is second in rebounds with 6.2 per game. The forward also makes his presence felt on the defensive end, averaging 3.3 blocks per game.
He reminds me a little bit of [Saint Josephs Ahmad] Nivins, hes a long athletic kid who can finish when he gets to the rim, Kellogg said of Nicholson.
To make sure his team is ready, Kellogg is trying to push his players in practice without over exerting them.
I just want to make sure that theyre physically ready to play, Kellogg said of Thursdays practice. I think mentally were in a good frame of mind, but I want to make sure theyre going hard enough to get a good sweat and get them ready to go without getting somebody injured or have guys running in quicksand during the game.

MHERST - After spending Thursday at home, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team was back on the road Friday heading to western New York to face St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m. Saturday, hoping to build off Wednesday's 91-68 win at Fordham.
It's been three years since the Minutemen visited the Atlantic 10's most remote outpost as the league's schedule sent the Bonnies in Amherst each of the past two seasons. It's been 14 years since Derek Kellogg visited Olean, N.Y., as a player, but the trip stood out.
"It's a tough place to play with the fans right on top of the court," Kellogg said. "It's usually a tough travel day. We're fortunate enough to be able to take a charter plane.
"It's a great home-court advantage for them - from the weather to the travel time, to the gym, to the fans being right on top of you trying to create havoc for the opposing teams," he said.
UMass (9-13, 4-5 Atlantic 10) will try to extend its winning streak against St. Bonaventure to seven games, but the current edition of the Bonnies has been better than its recent predecessors.
After an academic scandal decimated the program in 2003 and led to the firings of Jan van Breda Kolff and several athletic department officials, the Bonnies went 32-110 over the last five years and did not win more than eight games in any of those seasons.
In their second year under coach Mark Schmidt, St. Bonaventure (12-11, 3-7 Atlantic 10) stormed out of the gate this year, exciting its fans with a 10-4 start that included a win at Rutgers. But after opening Atlantic 10 play with a 78-65 victory over Fordham, the Bonnies have fallen on hard times by going 2-7 in their last nine.
The roster is almost exclusively newcomers, with a mixture of transfers, junior college players and freshmen. St. Bonaventure is led by freshman big man Andrew Nicholson, a 6-foot-9 Canadian who is averaging 13.5 points and 6.2 rebounds. His 74 blocked shots are the most in the nation by a freshman.
"He reminds me of (Saint Joseph's big man Ahmad) Nivins when he was young," Kellogg said. "He's a long athletic kid who has a good feel when he catches it around the basket."
The game is about as close to a homecoming as there is for Minuteman sophomore big man Tyrell Lynch, who is from Niagara Falls, N.Y., which is about 2 hours north of Olean.
MILESTONE HUNTING - Chris Lowe enters Saturday's game just seven assists behind Carl Smith (633) on the UMass all-time career list. Lowe is averaging 6.4 assists per game.
Lowe is also climbing the Atlantic 10's career assist chart and is currently No. 8. Smith is No. 7. Former George Washington guard Shawnta Rogers is one ahead of Smith at 634.
Lowe is within 12 points of moving up three spots on the Minuteman career points list. With 1,029 he's closing in on No. 37 Derick Claiborne (1,033), No. 36 David Brown (1,037) and No. 35 Charlton Clarke (1,041).
Ricky Harris is climbing the same chart. His 1,129 points has him at No. 20, five behind No. 19 Ray Ellerbrook and 10 behind No. 18 Donta Bright.
Senior Tony Gaffney needs nine blocked shots to become the third Minuteman to block 100 in a season, a club that includes only Stephane Lasme and Marcus Camby.
Gaffney is on track to become just the fifth player in the last 13 seasons to block 100 shots and record 50 steals in the same season. He currently has 91 blocks and 42 steals.

LEAN, N.Y. - The UMass men's basketball team fell victim to hot second half shooting as the St. Bonaventure Bonnies hit 63 percent of their field goals in the final 20 minutes to hand the Minutemen (9-14, 4-6 A-10) another crushing road loss, 83-75, on Saturday evening at a raucous Riley Center. The Minutemen held a seven point halftime lead, but the Bonnies couldn't miss in the second, hitting 15 of their first 17 shots to get right back into the game. Four UMass players finished in double figures led by Tony Gaffney's career-high 21 points along with 19 from Ricky Harris.
Gaffney also grabbed 11 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season (and his career). Needing eight assists to set the UMass all-time record, Chris Lowe finished with only two helpers, but did net 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Luke Bonner added 11.
All five St. Bonaventure starters reached double figures in scoring led by 18 from Chris Matthews and Maurice Thomas.
For the game, UMass shot 45 percent from the field (27-60) while the Bonnies shot 47 percent (31-66). St. Bonaventure dominated the boards, 48-28.
The Minutemen opened their largest lead of the game only 1:20 into the second half. Gaffney made it 44-35, finishing an alley-oop feed from Harris.
As was the case all night, the Bonnies would not go away as they used a 13-5 run to pull within one, 53-52.
St. Bonaventure's unworldly shooting continued as the Bonnies knocked down their first seven shots of the half, and 13 of their first 14 for their first lead of the game, 62-61 with 8:55 to go in the second half.
A Jonathan Hall basket gave them their largest lead of the game, 64-61, before Bonner answered with a 3-pointer to tie the score at 64, the third tie in the span of 3:27.
The teams went back and forth, with the score tied at 67, 69, and 71. Gaffney made it 71 all with his third acrobatic dunk of the game, with 4:15 remaining in regulation.
The Bonnies used a 9-0 run in the final minutes to erase a 73-72 UMass lead to make it 81-73 in favor of St. Bonaventure, a lead that proved too much for the Minutemen to overcome.
UMass jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead behind points from all five starters. St. Bonaventure answered with 13 of the next 17 points to pull even at 17 all. UMass responded with a 12-4 run to open its largest lead of the game, 29-21 with six minutes remaining in the first half.
Gaffney and Harris were the stories of the half with 10 points apiece, including two key Harris 3-pointers in the span of 1:26 allowing the Minutemen to break away from the 17-17 tie for the 38-31 halftime advantage.
The Minutemen are back in action on Wednesday night as they host New England rival Rhode Island at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center. It is Black Out Night and 2000s celebration.
Tony Gaffney had a career-high 21 points. His previous high was 20, set twice, once at UMass vs. Jacksonville State. He also did it at Boston University once.
Gaffney had his 12th game with season with double-figures and 16 of his career.
Gaffney had his ninth double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds. It was his second game in row with a double-double.
It was Gaffney's 15th game this season with ast least 10 rebounds and 17th of his career.
Gaffney had three blocks to give him 94 for the season.
Ricky Harris scored 19 points for the second game in a row. He has 21 games with double-figures this season in 23 games. It was his 61st career game with 10 or more points.
Chris Lowe had just two assists and is six shy of the UMass career record with 628.
Lowe had 13 points for his 13th game this year with double-figures and 43rd in his career.
Luke Bonner had his second game in a row in double-figures, scoring 11. Bonner has five games in double-figures this season and eight in his career.
UMass allowed a season-high tying points in a half, giving up 52 in the second half. UMass also allowed 52 in the second half at Southern Illinois.
LEAN, N.Y. - Different location but the same story for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team Saturday night.
For the eighth time this season, the Minutemen led in the second half and could not finish as they fell 83-75 at the Reilly Center.
"It was a game that was once again within our grasp," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said.
Two free throws by Ricky Harris gave the Minutemen a 73-72 lead with 2 minutes, 52 seconds remaining. But Chris Matthews answered with a 3-pointer to put the Bonnies back ahead 75-73.
Chris Lowe drove the baseline at the other end, but his floater hit the side of the rim. St. Bonaventure rebounded and called time-out.
UMass played tough defense for most of the ensuing possession, but freshman big man Andrew Nicholson slipped away from Luke Bonner and caught a lob for an easy dunk to give the Bonnies a 77-73 lead with 1:24 left.
UMass hurried the ball up the court, but Harris missed and Nicholson snared the board. Nicholson missed inside for the Bonnies, and the rebound bounced toward the sideline where Lowe and Maurice Thomas both dove for it. Neither could control it as the ball rolled out of bounds, but the referees could not see who it touched last and a jump ball was called with 41.9 second left.
The possession arrow favored St. Bonaventure. Anthony Gurley fouled Matthews and the junior guard made both free throws to put the Bonnies ahead 79-73 with 38 seconds left, essentially sealing the game.
"This is unbelievably frustrating for everybody," Gaffney said. "Every game it's the same thing. Guys panic. Some guys lose their minds.
"We throw up some crazy shots," he added. "We don't box out, we don't rebound. We don't do the little things down the stretch to win games. We're not the mature team we need to be to win games."
Harris said patience is the key late in games. "It can be fixed. We have to take our time and execute down the stretch," he said.
The Bonnies' first and third leading scorers were held without a point in the first half as UMass took a 38-31 lead into intermission. Nicholson was called for a charge and then a technical foul for spiking the ball less than three minutes into the game and watched the rest of the half from the bench, while Matthews was 0-for-8 from the field before the break.
The two carried the Bonnies (13-11, 4-7 Atlantic 10) in the second half when Nicholson had 10 points and eight of his nine rebounds. Matthews was 6-for-8 with a pair of 3s for 18 points in the second.
"Chris is a shooter. In the first half he got some good open looks that just didn't go down," said St. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt. "He didn't lose confidence and hit some big shots for us in the second half."
Gaffney led UMass (9-14, 4-6 Atlantic 10) with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Harris (four assists) and Lowe (two assists) added 19 and 13 points, respectively.
The Minutemen host Rhode Island at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mullins Center.
