ith six games left before the Atlantic 10 Tournament begins, UMass coach Derek Kellogg will try to rally the team for a stretch run in an effort to enter the tournament with some positive momentum.
He will have the perfect chance Wednesday when the Minutemen face off against nemesis Rhode Island for the 131st time in school history. Tip-off at the Mullins Center is slated for 7:30 p.m.
The trip home comes at an opportune time for the Minutemen, who are coming off a disappointing 83-75 loss at St. Bonaventure last Saturday. It was the fourth time this season in which the Minutemen lost a conference game after holding the lead or being tied at the half.
The good news for UMass (9-14, 4-6 A-10) is that this will be a home game. This is important for a few reasons. First, the Minutemen play much better at home (6-5 overall) than on the road (2-9). Secondly, the Rams are much worse on the road (6-5) than at home (11-1). And finally, UMass has a 17-4 record all-time at the Mullins Center against URI.
Kellogg remembers how intense this rivalry can be and how his players will have to be prepared for a grueling game.
Its been taken to another level since even when I played because Rhode Island is our rivalry game and one that seems to draw a great crowd at both places, Kellogg said at the weekly A-10 teleconference. Our guys realize, and theyve said it, that thats one of the most physical teams in the league and a team that will pressure the whole game and play up and down.
UMass has had a season full of stops and starts, but one constant has been that the Minuteman have never been blown out against any conference foe. UMass knows it can compete and win if it can execute down the stretch.
This is a game where youre going to have a nice crowd, theyre a little bit ahead of you in the conference, and theyre playing very well, Kellogg said of Rhode Island. It gives you a chance to come out and compete with one of the best teams in the league.
The Rams (18-8, 7-4 A-10) enter Wednesdays game on a hot streak. They have won six of their last seven games, most recently a 69-61 win over Saint Louis, who beat UMass 69-64 back on Jan. 14.
Rhode Island is led by a balanced scoring attack which features four starters who average double figures. Senior guard Jimmy Baron is the high-scorer for the Rams, putting in 16.6 points per game while hitting 44.3 percent of his 3-pointers.
Rebounding differential will be critical to the Minutemens success against URI. Against St. Bonaventure, UMass was outrebounded 48-28 in an eight-point loss, so Kellogg will emphasize the importance of rebounding, particularly by the guards who must help standout forward Tony Gaffney (10.7 rebounds per game) control the glass.
This could be a memorable game for senior point guard Chris Lowe who has 628 career assists, six short of the all-time UMass record of 633 held by Carl Smith. Considering that Lowe averages about eight assists per game at home, he could break the record in front of a crowded building against a team that is arguably UMass biggest rival.
It will be an impressive capstone to a very solid career and a fond memory from a senior season that has not been as successful as he had hoped. Despite the teams subpar record, Lowe has been instrumental in preparing some of the younger guards, such as freshman David Gibbs, for the future.
Hes done a good job of trying to help the younger kids play at a certain level. Its pretty difficult because hes in a learning curve himself with a new coach, Kellogg said.
Kellogg also hopes to see Lowe maximize his own potential for the remainder of the season.
As the seasons gone on, hes gotten better suited to lead in the locker room and on the floor. Kellogg said. He can even take it to one more step and one more level in our last six games of the regular season and the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

MHERST - Frustrated by his team's lack of toughness down the stretch, University Of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg put his team through a grueling practice Monday in preparation for tonight's game at 7 against Rhode Island at the Mullins Center.
The frustration resulted not just from Saturday's 83-75 loss at St. Bonaventure, but from the Minutemen's performance throughout the season.
"We had a great practice. I thought it was something that we needed," said Kellogg, "We worked on toughness drills. In college basketball, it's the tougher teams that win the close games.
"I watched the Pittsburgh-UConn game (Monday) night. You saw on the floor, 10 tough guys fighting every play, every possession. That's what we're trying to do.
"On our last flight the stewardess said we're the nicest team that she's ever had. We have great kids," Kellogg added. "That makes you feel good as a head coach, but you have to change that switch the other way when you step on the court. At the end of games you have to get tougher, nastier and a little bit meaner. I think that's something we're working on."
Rhode Island, which traditionally is one of the Atlantic 10's most physical teams, figures to test how much UMass gained from Monday's practice.
"They really play physical," Kellogg said. "That's been our Achilles' heel at times. We haven't met the challenges physically of some teams. If we can't keep them off the glass and get physically dominated we have no chance."
Kellogg said he was considering changing his lineup to shake things up as well.
"It's a possibility. No spots are guaranteed. I may go with a different lineup, but I'm not 100 percent certain yet," he said.
The game is the first of two in 18 days with Rhode Island (18-8), which is fifth in the Atlantic 10 at 7-4. The teams meet again in Kingston, R.I., at 2 p.m. March 7, the last game of the regular season.
While the Minutemen have struggled at 9-14 (4-6 A-10), Rams coach Jim Baron is concerned about the Minutemen.
"They've had some tough times, but they have excellent players with (Ricky) Harris, (Tony) Gaffney, (Chris) Lowe, (Luke) Bonner and (Anthony) Gurley. It's going to be a challenge for us," said Baron, who singled out the Minuteman senior point guard. "Chris Lowe has had a tremendous career. He's an excellent guard. He knows how to dribble drive better than anyone in this league."
Rhode Island is the league's top scoring team at 80.7 points per game. The Rams' 48.4 shooting percentage also is best in the Atlantic 10.
Senior guard Jimmy Baron, the coach's son, leads the Rams at 16.6 points per game. With 326 3-pointers as a Ram, Baron is third on the Atlantic 10 career list in that category, five behind former Minuteman Monty Mack.
Senior Rhode Island big man Kahiem Seawright is among the conference leaders in both points (14 per game) and rebounds (7.3). Junior Keith Cothran has emerged this season as well with 13.9 points per game.
2000s/BLACKOUT NIGHT - Tonight is the final decade night as part of the celebration of 100 Seasons of UMass Basketball. The game honors players from the current decade, although not many of the recent players will be in attendance because many are still playing professionally. Former Minutemen from this decade are playing on five of the six basketball-playing continents.
This is the third straight year that Rhode Island is the opponent on blackout night. Thousands of black T-shirts will be handed out to fans before the game.
MILESTONE HUNTER - Lowe is climbing both the UMass and Atlantic 10 career assist charts and is directly behind Carl Smith (633) on both lists. Lowe has 628 assists and needs six more to become the Minutemen's all-time leader.
Lowe is No. 8 on the conference list, behind Smith at No. 7 and Shawnta Rogers of George Washington with 634 at No. 6.

MHERST, Mass. - Keith Cothran scored a career-high 28 points, 18 of which came in the second half, to lead Rhode Island to a 71-59 win over UMass on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. UMass led by as many as 12 points in the first half and by three at halftime before the Rams took over in the latter stages of the second half. The Minutemen fall to 9-15 overall and 4-7 in the Atlantic 10, while URI improves to 19-8 overall and 8-4 in the A-10.
Ricky Harris and Chris Lowe each netted 15 points to lead UMass. Tony Gaffney added 11 points, six blocks, and four steals. The Minutemen shot 37.3 percent from the field, including 19.2 percent from 3-point range, while the Rams shot 42.4 percent for the game, including 60 percent in the second half.
With five assists for the game, Lowe tied Carl Smith for the UMass career lead with 633. The Minutemen defense held Rhode Island's top two scorers, Jimmy Baron and Kahiem Seawright, to only 12 combined points.
UMass fed off the energy of a packed student section to open the game with a 10-2 run, started off by back-to-back 3-pointers by Luke Bonner and Matt Glass.
A Bonner jumper at the 14:05 mark made the UMass lead 10, 15-5, but Cothran scored the game's next six points to pull the Rams within four, 15-11, with 12:23 left in the half.
The Minutemen lead reached 12, its largest of the half, when Tyrell Lynch put back a miss making it a 31-19 game with five minutes left, but the UMass offense would go cold and not score for the rest of the half. The Rams scored nine points during that drought to pull within three at halftime, 31-28.
Harris and Lowe led UMass in the first half with seven points each. URI's Cochran led all scorers with 10 points, while Rams' leading scorer Baron was held to just two points in the first 20 minutes.
After tying the score twice in the early going of the second half, URI took its first lead of the game, 38-37, at the 12:44 mark on a Lamont Ulmer free throw.
The Rams led by two, 41-39, when the Minutemen went on a 8-0 run over a 2:23 span, led by four points by Gaffney, on a dunk and two free throws, while the senior forward also took a charge at the defensive end. The run put UMass back on top, 47-41, with 9:42 to go.
URI responded with a 12-4 spurt, fueled by four points each from Cothran and Will Martell, to take the lead back, 53-51, with 5:19 to go.
A Harris runner and two Gaffney free throws negated a four-point Rams lead and tied the game with just under three minutes remaining, 57-57, but URI would score the game's next eight points, four of which came at the free throw line, to take a 65-57 lead with 1:11 on the clock.
The Minutemen return to action on Sunday when they travel to Philadelphia to take on Saint Joseph's in 2 p.m. Atlantic 10 game at the historic Palestra.
Chris Lowe tied for the career assists lead in UMass history with five in the game, giving him 633 in his career. He tied Carl Smith (633), who accomplished the feat from 1984-87.
Lowe also scored in double-figures for the 14th time this season and third game in a row with 15. Lowe moved to 33rd in career scoring with 1,057 passing Alex Eldridge (1,053) and Dana Dingle (1,043).
Tony Gaffney had his two dunks in the game to give him 45 on the season. The entire UMass team has 49 dunks.
Gaffney had six blocks to give him 100 on the season and four steals to move his season total to 50. Gaffney has become the first player in the NCAA with 100 blocks and 50 steals in a season since Duke's Shelden Williams in 2005-06.
Gaffney scored in double-figures for the 13th time this season and third game in a row with 11. He has 17 career games with 10 or more points.
Gaffney also hit his eighth 3-pointer of the season.
Ricky Harris had his 22nd game in double-figures this season with 15. He now has 62 games with 10 or more points in his career.
Ricky Harris had his first dunk of the season. He is the fifth Minutemen with a slam. In addition to Gaffney's 45th, Harris joins Tyrell Lynch, Anthony Gurley and David Gibbs with one each. Overall, UMass has 49 dunks.
Head Coach Derek Kellogg's general comments
It is getting a little redundant to play great basketball for 36 minutes and then in the last four minutes figure out a way to lose yourself instead of the other team totally executing. We played great on Baron, did a great job on Seawright. Cothran had a career night, which obviously was not in the game plan. I thought we played pretty hard, but to give up 60 percent and to get outrebounded by 12 in the second half is kind of a resounding theme of the team. When the team is not playing defense in front of the bench, we are not quite as talkative or as energetic. It could be that guys are playing too many minutes, it could be that we are not talking enough on defense. There could be a lot of different excuses, but I'm not really one for excuses. We are going to try to move on and get ready for St. Joe's on Sunday.
Coach Kellogg on calling timeout with nine seconds left
I told them that the game is never over. Don't just let them shoot a layup. Why are we going to let a guy just go down there and get a layup. We play until the final buzzer. That is what I told them. We are trying to get a mentality here that you play for 40 minutes every single night out. I think we usually play for 36 or 37 minutes a game.
Coach Kellogg on going down the stretch
I am preaching that every single day. That we have competed with numerous teams in the top-100 RPI and against the best teams in this league. We have beat some, not beat some, and been right there at the end of the games. A little bit more from each guy, and then some guy come out of nowhere to do something to help us. Maybe David Gibbs turns a corner. Tyrell Lynch played as good as he played all year. I should have played him more in the second half. I should have gone to a big line-up with Gaffney, Bonner, and Lynch and try to control the backboards. In hindsight, that is probably what I would have done. I am waiting for those guys to step their game up and give us a boost. I am confident that we can beat anyone in this league on any given night. I am confident that we can go to Atlantic City and play well and have a chance to do something. I keep preaching every single day that you guys are as good as anyone in this league. They just have to believe it. I believe it. They are the ones that are out there that have to make plays and have to do it.
Tony Gaffney on loss to URI
I am at a loss for words. We get the ball to a senior down low and he can't put it in. I missed about six layups. It is just frustrating. We held them to 28 points in the first half when we were playing defense right in front of our bench. We had the coaches and our bench helping us and then we go into the second half and can't finish. It is just the same thing every game. We gave up 60 percent, 45 points and got outrebounded 19-7 in the second half. Until someone steps up, and it should be one of us, it should be a senior, and says, `I'm going to take this game over and be tough. I'm not letting us lose,' we are going to continue to throw games away at the end and our season will end before we know it.
Gaffney on losing in final minutes
I thought we had a lot of good shots, especially in the first half, we just didn't finish. You are writing the same story over and over again. We don't finish plays. We get layups down low, and most of the time we usually finish that, but tonight we found another way to throw the game away.
Head Coach Jim Baron's general comments
We knew this game was going to be a battle. We knew this was a good team, they beat Kansas, they beat Temple. We knew it was going to be a hard fought battle. In the first half we missed a lot of shots and turned the ball over. At halftime I told my guys, in the second half whoever rebounds the basketball is going to win this game. In the first half they out rebounded us by nine, but we ended up out rebounding them 37-34 for the game. I can't be more proud of our kids, they really stepped up. Kahiem went down with an ankles sprain but the rest of the guys showed a lot of fortitude. This team loves to come back. We stepped up and made the plays down the stretch and executed.
Coach Baron on bench scoring
It was tremendous, the number of guys that stepped up. The whole team stepped up. You need a lot of guys to step up, one or two guys can't do it all.
Coach Baron on never settling down
It was a hard fought game, I don't think we ever settled down. We were on edge the whole game. They are a good team, they had something to prove because they were coming off a tough loss to St. Bonaventure. We knew it was going to be a tough place to play, the students here were tremendous.
here are no fairy tale endings this year.
Last year the Massachusetts mens basketball team found anyway possible to win games overcoming a 12-point deficit to beat Akron, a 22-point deficit to top Syracuse and a nine-point halftime deficit to overcome Florida en route to an NIT Finals appearance.
This year the Minutemen (9-15, 4-7 Atlantic 10) are finding anyway to lose games, as they dropped another heartbreaker, this time to Rhode Island, 71-59, Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
Were writing the same story over and over again, senior Tony Gaffney said after the loss. We dont finish plays, we get lay ups down low and most of the time those arent the issue, we usually finish that, but tonight we of course find another way to throw a game away.
UMass came out on fire, starting the game off with two 3-pointers by Luke Bonner and Matt Glass, respectively, on their way to a 15-5 lead in the first six minutes. The Rams (19-8, 8-4 A-10) fought back, cutting the lead to as little as four, before UMass built the lead back to 12 on a layup by Tyrell Lynch.
That basket, which put the Minutemen up 31-19 with 5 minutes, 1 second left in the first half, would be the last of the half for UMass. URI would instead go on a 9-0 run to close out the final five minutes. The Minutemen played a far better first half than the Rams, out rebounding them 27-18 and shooting 37.1 percent (13-35) compared to URIs 29.4 percent (10-34), but had just a three-point lead to show for it going into the locker room.
UMass could not hold URI at bay in the second half as the Rams, led by Keith Cothrans career night off the bench (26 points, two rebounds and three steals), would shoot 60 percent in the half and outscoring the Minutemen 43-28 on its way to the win.
UMass contained the Rams two leading scorers all night, holding Jimmy Baron and Kahiem Seawright to six points apiece, but had no answer for Cothran.
[We] did great on Baron, did a great job on Seawright, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. Cothran had a career night which obviously wasnt in the game plan.
Cothran was just one of the catalysts off the bench for the Rams. Stevie Mejia and Delroy James contributed with seven and eight points respectively, as URIs bench would outscore UMass 41-6 in the game and outscore its own starters 41-30.
While the Rams had Cothran to lean on, the Minutemen had no one who threw the team on his shoulders when they needed it most.
Until someone steps up, and it should be one of us seniors, until someone steps up and says Im taking this team over and Im going to be tough and not letting us lose, well continue to throw games away at the end, Gaffney said. Our season will end before we know it.
Ricky Harris and Chris Lowe led UMass with 15 points each, but in the last 26:05 of the game neither did what they are known for doing. With 6:05 left in the first half, Harris hit a 3-point shot that was assisted by Lowe. After that shot, Harris, as well as the rest of the team, did not hit another 3-pointer and Lowe did not have another assist.
The Minutemen, who shot 5-for-16 from 3-point range in the first half, shot 0-for-10 in the second half, finishing the game shooting 19.2 percent from deep. Lowe, who was six assists shy of the all-time record at UMass prior to the game, finished with five assists to tie Carl Smith at 633.
The end of the second half was similar to the first. With the game tied at 57 with 2:56 to go, the Rams went on a 14-2 run to close out the game. The Minutemen did not hit a field goal in the final three minutes of the game, going 0-for-5 in the stretch.
I thought we played pretty hard but to give up 60 percent [shooting] in the second half and get out rebounded by 12 is kind of a resounding theme of the team, Kellogg said after the loss. Well its getting a little redundant to play great basketball for 36 minutes.

MHERST - Even off nights for Rhode Island's top two scorers Wednesday night were not enough to end the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's season-long, second-half woes.
The Minutemen missed open shots, turned the ball over 16 times and fell 71-59 at the Mullins Center.
"It's getting redundant to play great basketball for 36 minutes and then figure out a way to lose," said UMass coach Derek Kellogg, whose team fell to 9-15 (4-7 Atlantic 10).
"Until someone steps up - and it should be a senior - and says, #I'm not letting us lose,' we're going to continue to throw games away at the end," senior Tony Gaffney said.
Jimmy Baron and Kahiem Seawright entered the game averaging 30.6 points for the Rams. The duo had just six points apiece on Wednesday.
But Keith Cothran carried Rhode Island (19-8, 8-4 Atlantic 10) almost single-handedly. The junior had a career-high 26 points, including 16 in the second half.
"Keith stepped up," Rams coach Jim Baron said. "He's very aggressive. He attacks the bucket. He plays hard and creates problems."
Struggles by the Minuteman wings helped to counteract the woes of Baron and Seawright. Ricky Harris had 15 points, but missed 10 of his 16 shots. Anthony Gurley, who came off the bench, was scoreless, while Matt Glass, who replaced him in the starting lineup, had just three points.
Still, UMass led 47-41 with 9 minutes, 44 seconds left in the game. But Cothran scored seven points in a 14-6 Rhode Island run that gave the visitors momentum and a four-point lead.
A jumper by Harris and two free throws by Gaffney tied the game at 57-57 with just under three minutes to go. After two free throws by Seawright put the Rams ahead, Gaffney missed a layup inside.
Out of a Rhode Island time-out, Cothran scored by driving to the basket late in the shot clock to put his team up 61-57 with 1:46 left.
The Minutemen, who were held scoreless for the last five minutes of the first half, did not make another field goal as the Rams pulled away.
UMass which has relied heavily on outside shooting all season, did not make a three in the second half and missed all 10 attempts.
Rhode Island shot 60 percent from the field in the second half (15-for-25).
Chris Lowe had 15 points and five assists, but turned the ball over nine times. Gaffney had 11 points, five rebounds, six blocked shots and four steals.
The Minutemen return to the road at 2 p.m. Sunday against Saint Joseph's at the Palestra.
With nine seconds left after an uncontested layup by the Rams, Kellogg called time-out to send a message loudly to his team.
"I told them the game is never over. You can't just let them shoot a layup," Kellogg said. "You play #til the final buzzer. I'm trying to get a mentality here of how hard you're supposed to play. You play for 40 minutes every single time out. Finish off a game."

MHERST - With more bad news on the court in Wednesday's loss to Rhode Island, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team may have gotten a little good news off of it.
Terrell Vinson, one of the top unsigned high school players in the country, listed the Minutemen as one of his four final college choices. Vinson, a 6-foot-7 forward from Baltimore, had originally signed with Loyola Marymount but reopened his recruiting when coach Bill Bayno resigned for medical reasons.
Vinson's high school coach at St. Frances Academy, Mark Karcher, a former standout at Temple, told the St. Petersburg Times that Vinson is considering UMass, Maryland, South Florida and Cincinnati.
Vinson can play either forward position well. ESPN ranked Vinson as the No. 8 small forward in the country, while Scout.com has him as the No. 25 power forward.
He's played some of his AAU ball with the D.C. Assault, a program from which UMass coach Derek Kellogg has recruited heavily.
And two future Minutemen who have already signed, Raphiael Putney and Javorn Farrell, were selected to play in the Mid-Atlantic Premiere All-Star game next month.
LOWE RECORD - Chris Lowe entered Wednesday's game needing six assists to become the all-time career leader at UMass and he appeared on track to break the record quickly. He had five first-half assists to tie Carl Smith with 633 in his career. But Lowe didn't register one in the second half and finished the game with nine turnovers.
NEW LINEUP - In an attempt to get more size on the floor as well as shake things up a bit, Kellogg replaced Anthony Gurley in the starting lineup with sophomore Matt Glass.
"I thought we'd been physically overmatched at the position," Kellogg said.
The move helped on the boards, at least early, as Matt Glass had all five of his rebounds in the first half.
But Gurley, who was averaging 11.1 points per game, faltered in his new role with no points, rebounds, assists or steals and missed all three shots he attempted.
"I think it might have been a little bit of an adjustment for him coming off the bench," Kellogg said.
CENTURY CLUB - Tony Gaffney's six blocks gave him 100 this season, making him only the third Minuteman to reach the milestone, joining Marcus Camby and Stephane Lasme.
REBOUNDING - A heavy emphasis on rebounding in practice this week paid off early as the Minutemen outrebounded the Rams 27-18 in the first half. But URI controlled the glass in the second half 19-7.
Freshman Tyrell Lynch led the Minutemen with eight rebounds overall.
"That was as good a game as he's played all year," Kellogg said. "I should have played him more in the second half. I should have gone to a big lineup and played him with Luke and Tony. In hindsight that's what I would have done."
NEXT UP - The Minutemen return to the road at 2 p.m. Sunday against Saint Joseph's at the Palestra because Alumni Fieldhouse is being renovated. The Hawks defeated UMass 68-64 at the Mullins Center on Feb. 8.
MISCELLANEOUS - The six home losses by UMass are the second most in Mullins Center history, behind seven in 2003-04.
The Minutemen and a lingering back injury held Jimmy Baron, who is No. 3 on the Atlantic 10's career 3-pointer list, without a trey in the game.
UMass honored former managers-turned-players Tim Collins and Matt Pennie on 2000s Night as part of the celebration of 100 Seasons of UMass Basketball. Pictures of former players who are still playing professionally were shown on the video boards.
Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, the standout guard for the New Leadership girls basketball team, who recently became the first 3,000-point scorer in Massachusetts high school history, was among the 6,139 fans in attendance.

MHERST - Late in a long winter, the University of Massachusetts basketball season is starting to look an awful lot like the movie "Groundhog Day."
Again and again, the Minutemen are close at crunch time. Again and again, they lose.
The possibilities of winning love before the credits roll, or even arriving at a happy spring (some March Gladness), look bleak, indeed, after another down-the-stretch disaster. Last night's latest installment was a 71-59 loss to Rhode Island, a game far closer than the final score indicates.
"It's getting a little redundant to play great basketball for 36 minutes, to be right in the game, and then almost figure out a way yourself to lose," said first-year coach Derek Kellogg.
UMass tied the game at 57 on a pair of Tony Gaffney free throws with 2:56 remaining, then watched as Rhode Island closed the contest on a 14-2 run. In that stretch, UMass produced a frustrating sequence that included a missed layup, an airballed 3-pointer, and some exasperating turnovers.
"It's just the same thing every single game," said a frustrated Gaffney. "Until someone steps up - and it should be one of us, a senior, [and] we've yet to do it - until someone steps up and says, 'I'm taking this game over, I'm going to be tough, I'm not letting us lose,' we're going to continue to throw games away at the end, and our season will end before we know it."
UMass (9-15, 4-7 Atlantic 10) has been tied or ahead in nine of its 15 losses in the final four minutes, while the opponent has been tied or ahead at a comparable time in only one of the Minutemen's victories.
"We just didn't finish," said Gaffney. "We're writing the same story over and over again . . . Tonight, of course, we found another way to throw a game away."
For Rhode Island (19-8, 8-4), the story is much rosier. The Rams have been winning the close ones, and found a way yet again. Keith Cothran was the difference, coming off the bench to score a career-high 26 points on a night when usual stalwarts Jimmy Baron and Kahiem Seawright were held to 6 apiece.
"This team loves coming back," said Rhode Island coach Jim Baron (Jimmy's father). "We stepped up and made the plays down the stretch. We executed on what we wanted to do."
Rhode Island was down by as many as 12 in the first half, but closed to 31-28 at the break.
UMass dominated the glass in the first stanza, outrebounding the Rams by nine.
That turned around completely after intermission as Rhode Island owned the boards with a 19-7 advantage. UMass was 0 for 10 from 3-point land in the second half, and just 5 for 26 in the game.
The Minutemen were led by Chris Lowe and Ricky Harris with 15 points apiece. Gaffney had 11 points, 5 rebounds, 6 blocks, and 4 steals. It just wasn't enough as the late-game frustration continued, with UMass burrowing down toward the bottom of the league standings, keeping company with Punxsutawney Phil.
MHERST - For the third year in a row, UMass welcomed Rhode Island to the Mullins Center on Black Out Night with much of the crowd of 6,139 adorned in black T-shirts. If only the snow falling outside had kept the Rams away, the evening might have been a resounding success.
Instead it was a dark night for the Minutemen.
A second-half surge by the Rams carried them to a convincing 71-59 win in an Atlantic 10 matchup. Junior guard Keith Cothran came off the bench to pace Rhode Island (19-8, 8-4), hitting 11-of-17 shots from the field, including 3-of-5 on 3-pointers, for a career-high 26 points.
I just wanted to help the team in any way I can and be aggressive offensively and defensively and create havoc, said Cothran, who was the lone Ram to hit double figures. I watched a lot of film on them and I wanted to hit my shots.
UMass (9-15, 4-7) led 31-28 at the break and did a creditable job on URI star Jimmy Baron, who had scored in double figures in 26 of the previous 28 games. Baron, the Rams career 3-point leader with 326, missed both of his trey attempts en route to a season low-tying six-point performance.
That wasnt enough for the Minutemen, who fell apart down the stretch. UMass was 0-for-10 on 3s and outrebounded 19-7 in the second half. To make matters worse, the URI bench, primarily due to Cothran, outscored the UMass reserves 41-6 overall.
Its getting a little redundant to play great basketball for 36 minutes and lose, said UMass coach Derek Kellogg, whose club lost the battle on the boards, 37-34. We played great on Baron and (Kahiem) Seawright (six points) and Cothran had a career night. . . . Im confident we can beat anybody in the league. I believe it. They (the players) have to believe it.
Said UMass forward Tony Gaffney, who had 11 points, six blocks and four steals: Im at a loss for words. I dont know how it happened. Its frustrating.
UMass sped to a 12-point lead (31-19) with 5:01 left in the first half as Chris Lowe tied the school mark of Carl Smith (1983-87) for career assists (633) with five. Lowe was held without an assist in the second half and finished with a game-high nine turnovers.
URI never led in the first half and didnt go ahead until Lamonte Ulmer hit a free throw with 12:44 to go (38-37). From then on the lead changed hands five times and the score was tied on seven occasions. It wasnt until two free throws by Seawright with 2:28 that URI took control (59-57) for good.
We knew it was going to be a battle. UMass is a good team, said URI coach Jim Baron. We started off missing a lot of shots early on and I told our guys in the second half that whoever rebounds has a chance to win the game. I couldnt be any prouder of my guys.
MHERST - As has been the case so many times this season, the University of Massachusetts mens basketball team started strong last night in the Mullins Center but faded late.
Rhode Island took the lead midway through the second half and went on to defeat the Minutemen, 71-59.
We just couldnt finish. We dont finish plays, said UMass senior Tony Gaffney, who finished with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. Today, we just found another way to throw a game away. Until someone steps up, were going to keep throwing games away.
UMass sizable first-half lead began to crumble with five minutes left. With the Minutemen on top, 31-19, URI called a timeout. Returning to the court with fresh motivation, the Rams finished the half with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 31-28.
After UMass senior Luke Bonner opened the second half with a jumper, the Rams outscored the Minutemen, 10-4, to take a 38-37 lead, the Rams first of the game.
UMass (9-15, 4-7 Atlantic 10) regained the lead with free throws by Chris Lowe and Gaffney. But URI (19-8, 8-4) shot 60 percent in the second half, and while UMass outrebounded the Rams, 27-18, in the first half, URI pulled down 19 boards to UMass seven after intermission.
Its getting a little redundant to play great basketball for 36 minutes and then figure out a way yourself to lose, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said.
A Ricky Harris jumper and a pair of free throws by Gaffney tied the game at 57-57 with less than three minutes left, but URI answered with eight straight points.
The Rams leading scorers struggled as former Worcester Academy star Jimmy Baron (16.6 ppg) and Kahiem Seawright (14.0) finished with just six points each. Junior Keith Cothran scored a career-high 26 points off the bench.
I was just hitting shots, Cothran said. I just knew I wanted to be real aggressive on offense and defense and wreck havoc. It was a great team effort.
Reserves Delroy James (8 points) and Stevie Mejia (7 points) also contributed.
Meanwhile, UMass got 15-point performances from Harris and Lowe, but it was hardly the night Lowe could have hoped for. The senior point guard entered the game needing six assists to become the UMass career leader, but he finished with five, and committed nine turnovers.
MHERST, Mass. - Some victories are sweeter than others, and the one the University of Rhode Island earned Wednesday night at the Mullins Center might be the most important yet for the Rams.
Its not just that URI won for the first time in five years, to the day, in the Mullins Center. Its not that they rallied from 12 back to keep their hot streak alive with their seventh win in eight starts.
It was the way Rhode Island beat Massachusetts, 71-59, that made this one special.
The Rams didnt play their best. Their two co-captains, Jimmy Baron and Kahiem Seawright, were shut down and scored only six points each, 18 below their combined averages. Not only that, but Seawright injured his ankle and miss much of the second half.
But in a display of resiliency and determination, they fought back and rode a career night from Keith Cothran (26 points) and clutch play from everyone on the court in the final three minutes to a significant victory.
"This is what a team is built on," Seawright said in wrapping up the nights work. "Jimmy is going to get the best looks of the defense every night. Im getting a lot of doubles. We need the third and fourth guys to step up."
Cothran was the guy who stepped way up Wednesday night. He carried the team on his back as he went 11-for-17, including 3-for-5 on 3-pointers.
"I was thinking in the hotel room that I was going to be real aggressive," Cothran said. "I wanted to just create havoc."
Coach Jim Baron told him he would be needed, especially after watching film of UMass previous game, a loss at St. Bonaventure.
"I saw what the Bonaventure guards did against these guys," Baron said. "Keith is a big guard like they have. Hes a kid that plays hard and creates problems."
Cothran had played excellently early in the season, when he was starting. Since injuring a knee nine games ago, he has come off the bench and hasnt been as big a factor. Wednesday night, Baron got Cothran in the game early and kept him in. Cothran played 29 minutes and had three of URIs nine steals in addition to his 26 points.
URI is now 15-1 when Cothran scores at least 15.
Rhode Island needed someone to step up since the Rams shot only 29 percent in the first half. They fell behind right away and were down by as many as 31-19. They scored the last nine points of the half to get within three at the break. UMass had outrebounded URI and beaten the Rams to numerous loose balls in the first 20 minutes.
With Cothran leading the way, the second half belonged to the Rams. URI got its first lead at 38-37 on a free throw by Lamonte Ulmer with 12:44 left. It fell behind again, but Cothran drilled a 3-pointer to get his team back on top. UMass went up six before 3-pointers by Stevie Mejia and Cothran tied it at 49-49.
URI appeared to be in trouble, though, since it had to go nearly 10 minutes without Seawright, who sprained an ankle trying to draw a charge on UMass point guard Chris Lowe. Lowe, who killed URI badly in two UMass victories last season, had 15 points and five assists. But, hounded by Marquis Jones and Mejia, he also had nine turnovers.
The score was tied for the last time at 57-57 with 2:40 left. Seawright returned and made two foul shots to start a 14-2 run the rest of the way that won it for URI. Cothran had two hoops in the run and Baron, who attempted (and missed) only two 3-point shots all night, made four free throws to help salt away the decision.
"I cant be prouder of our kids rallying and stepping it up," said Jim Baron, whose team is now 19-8 overall and 8-4 in the Atlantic 10. "This team loves coming back . . . We stepped up and made the plays down the stretch. We did what we wanted to do."
After its struggles in the first half, the Rams shot 60 percent from the field after the beak. They were outrebounded by nine in the first half, but won the battle of the boards by 12 in the second 20 minutes.
"Its a big win for us. It says a lot for us," Cothran said.
It says that the Rams are in as good a position as they have been all season heading to a visit to the Bronx to meet Fordham Saturday.
MHERST, Mass. - The University of Rhode Island received two scares Wednesday night, one when it fell behind Massachusetts by 12 points and then a second when co-captain Kahiem Seawright was injured midway through the second half.
The Rams definitely survived the first scare, rallying to beat the Minutemen, 71-59, at the Mullins Center behind Keith Cothrans career-high 26 points.
And it appears they survived the second scare, too. Seawright suffered what appears to be a minor ankle sprain. He missed nine minutes, but was able to return for the final 2:44 and help URI pull away for the victory.
Seawright was involved in a collision with UMass point guard Chris Lowe as Lowe drove to the bucket with 12:03 left. Seawright was called for a blocking foul.
I tried to take a charge, he related. I thought I had great position.
The two collided hard.
His whole body fell on my (right) foot, Seawright said. It rolled it. There was immediate pain.
Seawright quickly grabbed his ankle. His teammates waved trainer Mike Monteiro onto the court. It looked serious as his teammates had to help Seawright off the court.
Monteiro immediately began to work with Seawright, removed his sneaker and did some exercises. Seawright reentered just inside the three minute mark with the score tied at 57-57. He got an offensive rebound, was fouled and made both free throws. It started a 14-2 run that gave the Rams their seventh win in their last eight starts.
Monteiro said Seawright is likely to have some swelling, but all indications are that it is a minor sprain and that Seawright, who has started 91 straight games, could be ready by Saturday when URI visits Fordham.

URI won even though co-captains Seawright and Jimmy Baron went a combined 3-for-13.
While Cothran was easily the nights star, others stepped up to lead the team to its fourth victory over the season, third on the road, after trailing in double digits. Freshman Stevie Mejia had two big 3-point buckets as he shared time at the point with Marquis Jones. They did a far better job that URI did last season against Lowe, the UMass point guard. Lowe had five assists, to tie the school record for assists, with 633, but also had nine turnovers.
Will Martell had nine points and a team high eight rebounds. UMass was 5-for-26 on 3-pointers, 0-for-10 in the second half.

URI athletics director Thor Bjorn was honored by his alma mater at halftime.
Bjorn, a 1990 UMass grad received the Harold J. VanderZwaag Distinguished Alumnus Award, named in honor of the man who founded the Sport Management Program at the University of Massachusetts. The criteria for the award are: professional excellence and outstanding achievement in the sports industry and dedication to the Sport Management Program at the University of Massachusetts.

Jimmy Baron currently stands in third place among the 10 finalists for the Lowes Senior CLASS Award.
Fan voting, the first of three aspects to determine the award recipient, is being held on the internet. Louisvilles Terrence Willaims leads at 31 percent and Marquettes Jerel McNeal is second at 20. After Barons 14 percent in third, Tyler Hanbrough of North Carolina is fourth at 11 percent. Temples Dionte Christmas is tied Sam Young of Pittsburgh, A.J. Abrams of Texas and Curtis Jerrells of Baylor at 3 percent.
The fan voting counts as one-third of the total. Voting also will be held by media and coaches.
