MHERST - Both the University of Massachusetts and Saint Joseph's men's basketball teams are trying to shake their struggles since they met two weeks ago at the Mullins Center.
The teams will play a rematch at 2 p.m. Sunday in Philadelphia.
After the first game, Hawks coach Phil Martelli praised his team's mental toughness for finding a way to come back and beat the Minutemen 68-64, while Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg was frustrated with his team's lack of toughness and inability to close out St. Joe's in a winnable game.
Since then the Hawks have not found a way to come from behind to beat anybody. They fell 61-59 at home against Temple, 75-68 at La Salle and 73-71 at Saint Louis, a three-game stretch that pretty much eliminated the chance for Saint Joseph's (14-11, 7-4 Atlantic 10) to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Wednesday's loss dropped the Hawks to fifth place in the Atlantic 10, a half-game behind Rhode Island (8-4) and a half-game ahead of Saint Louis (7-5).
UMass (9-15, 4-7 A-10) is 1-2 since falling to Saint Joseph's, beating hapless Fordham before falling to St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island in games that followed pretty much the same script as the game with the Hawks.
"I think physically, we're giving a good effort," Kellogg said. "I think the mental approach is where we're faltering a little bit. If one raindrop falls it's not pouring. A missed layup or missed shot shouldn't get the team down."
With Alumni Fieldhouse being expanded and renovated, all of the Hawks' home games this season are at the Palestra, Philadelphia's venerable gymnasium that has been the center of the city's Big-Five basketball tradition for decades.
The Minutemen have good memories of the building, which in addition to being the home of University of Pennsylvania basketball since 1972, also formerly hosted the Atlantic 10 Tournament. UMass is 11-5 in the building and has won its last eight games there, all in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the A-10 Tournament from 1992-1995. Kellogg was in uniform for all eight of those games. "Our teams always played well there," Kellogg said. "I have great memories. It's a great place to watch a college game,"
To extend that streak to nine, the Minutemen will need to do better against Hawk senior big man Ahmad Nivins, who had 21 points and 12 rebounds against UMass on Feb. 8.
"He's a good player. He's going to get his. You have to withstand his blows," Kellogg said.
"He's very patient," UMass senior big man Luke Bonner said. "He makes his free throws too, which makes him a lot more difficult to deal with."
After Wednesday's 71-59 loss to Rhode Island, Kellogg said he wished he had tried a bigger lineup of Bonner, Tyrell Lynch and Tony Gaffney on the floor together to counter his team's rebounding woes.
Kellogg said he is not sure if he would use that combination against St. Joe's, but he will try it eventually.
"I'm not sure how much in this game," Kellogg said. "We have to get a little bit better and I have to find a different ways to do that."
In that lineup, the wing would be played by Gaffney on defense and by Bonner, whose primary weapon is his 3-point shooting, on offense.
MILESTONES - Minuteman senior guard Chris Lowe, who tied the UMass career assist record on Wednesday, will break the tie with Carl Smith with his first assist Sunday.
With 100 blocked shots this season, Gaffney has the sixth most in a single season for the Minutemen. He is just eight blocks away from tying the third most - 108 by Stephane Lasme in 2005-06.

HILADELPHIA, Pa. - Chris Lowe hit two clutch free throws with only two seconds remaining in regulation to give UMass a thrilling 70-69 win over Saint Joseph's at the Palestra on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks nearly completed an improbable comeback with four points in the span of five seconds, but Lowe responded with his 12th and 13th points of the game to hand Saint Joseph's its fourth straight loss. Tony Gaffney paced the Minutemen with 17 points and 10 rebounds, his 10th career double-double. The Minutemen improve to 10-15 on the season, 5-7 in the A-10, while Saint Joseph's stands at 14-12, 7-5 in conference play.
UMass shot 50 percent from the field (26-for-52) and Saint Joseph's shot 46 percent (28-for-61). The Minutemen hit 40 percent of their 3's (8-of-20) while Saint Joseph's was 0-for-7, the first time that UMass held its opponent without a made 3-pointer since Feb. 22, 2000 against Rhode Island.
Lowe added 13 points and seven assists while Ricky Harris netted 11. Ahmad Nivans paced Saint Joseph's with 21 points.
Luke Bonner's only 3-pointer of the afternoon gave UMass its first lead of the second half at 66-65 with only 48 seconds remaining in the contest.
After Bonner knocked down two free throws, Saint Joseph's Garrett Williamson hit two of his own to cut the UMass lead to 68-67 with 11 seconds to go. Nivans then came up with a steal to set up Tasheed Carr, who hit both free throws with six seconds remaining on the clock.
Off the ensuing inbounds, Lowe went coast-to-coast to draw the foul and set up his heroics.
Carr's layup with 18:23 remaining in the second half gave Saint Joseph's a 40-38 advantage, its first lead since 11-9. The Hawks went on to stage a 12-2 run to open up their largest lead of the game, 48-40. The Minutemen responded with five consecutive to pull right back to within three. Matt Glass' 3-pointer that made it 48-43 ended a UMass field goal drought that spanned 6:50.
Two Gaffney baskets and a Lowe layup led a 6-0 charge to tie the score at 51, the first tie since 38-38.
Harris' second 3-pointer tied the score at 59 with six minutes remaining in the second half.
UMass shot 60 percent (15-of-25) from the floor in the first half while Saint Joseph's was 50 percent (15-for-30). Seven Minutemen had five points or more led by Gaffney and Anthony Gurley with seven.
The Minutemen broke a 14-14 deadlock with a 7-0 run to open up their largest lead of the game at 21-14 with 10:22 remaining in the half. David Gibbs scored all five of his points in that span to spark the run capped off by a Gurley layup. The Hawks answered with a 9-2 run to tie the score at 23, the fifth of 14 ties in the game.
UMass returns home on Wednesday to host Duquesne at 7 p.m.
UMass won second 1-point game this season as Chris Lowe hit the winning free throws with 2.0 seconds left.
Chris Lowe set the new UMass career assists record with 640 as he had seven in the game. Lowe passed Carl Smith (633) on the charts. Lowe also moved to sixth in career asissts in the Atlantic 10 with his 640. He passed Smith and GW's Shawnta Rogers (634).
Lowe had his 15th game this season and 45th in his career with 10 or more points scoring 13.
Tony Gaffney had his 10th double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Gaffney had his 14th game in double-figure scoring and 16th game in double-figure rebounding.
Gaffney had four blocks to give him 104 on the season. He moved to fifth in single-season UMass lists, passing Marcus Camby's 103 in 1994-95.
Gaffney was credited with just one steal and stands at 49, one shy of 50. When he gets 50, Gaffney will be the first player since Duke's Shelden Williams to have 100 blocks and 50 steals in the same season and just the fifth player since 1996-97.
Ricky Harris had 11 points to reach double-figures for the 23rd time in 25 games this season and 63rd time in his career.
Harris' 11 points pushed him to 1,264 career points and to No. 16 on the all-time list passing Doug Grutchfield (1,257).
Speaking of all-time lists, Chris Lowe's 13 points moved him to 1,070 career points, just shy of 32nd on the all-time list where Shannon Crooks has 1,074.
UMass shot 50 percent from the floor for the seventh time this season, UMass is 5-2 in those games.
UMass won a game that it trailed with 5:00 left for the first time all season, the Minutemen were 0-9 in those games.
UMass held Saint Joseph's without a 3-pointer. Its the first time since 1995 the Hawks didn't hit a trey in a game and the first time since Feb. 22, 2000 that a UMass opponent didn't make a 3FG. Nine years ago to the day.
UMass is now 12-5 in The Palestra, having won the last nine in a row, all with Derek Kellogg on UMass' side.
A UMass opponent had two players with 10 or more rebounds for the second time this season, the first since Memphis did it back on Nov. 17, 2008.
