MHERST - Was Sunday's dramatic win at Saint Joseph's the start of a late-season turnaround for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team or just another good win dropped into an otherwise tough season?
That's the question the Minutemen are trying to answer as they attempt to carry momentum from their 70-69 win over Saint Joseph's Sunday afternoon into tonight's game at 7 against Duquesne at the Mullins Center.
"I want this to be another win and not go back to losing," UMass junior guard Ricky Harris said. "I hope we can build on this going into the Atlantic 10 Tournament."
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said his team cannot revel in Sunday's 70-69 win for too long.
"We have to keep a great attitude," Kellogg said. "It was good that we won a nice tight game, but that's behind us now and we've got business (tonight) versus Duquesne, a team that's ahead of us in the conference."
The Minutemen (10-15, 5-7 Atlantic 10) are tied for ninth with La Salle in the conference, one game behind Richmond (6-6). The Dukes are tied for sixth with Saint Joseph's at 7-5, a half game behind Saint Louis (8-5).
Duquesne was expected to struggle this season after both Shawn James and Kojo Mensah left school early in hopes of being drafted. Neither were and the Dukes are flourishing without them. At 16-9 overall, including an upset of Xavier, Duquesne looks certain to land somewhere in the postseason.
The Dukes are led by dark-horse Atlantic 10 player of the year candidate Aaron Jackson. The 6-foot-4 senior guard is in the conference's top 10 in scoring (18.1 points per game), assists (5.6), steals (1.64), shooting percentage (.540) and free-throw shooting percentage (82.5 percent).
"He's one of those do-it-all players," Harris said. "He's one of the most underrated players in the conference."
Coach Ron Everhart's offense runs at one of the fastest paces in the conference and college basketball as a whole. Duquesne averages 78.8 points per game, second most in the conference behind only Rhode Island.
"We'll try to run with them," Kellogg said. "We have guys that can play in transition too. But we have to be smart about it and know when to get it inside to take advantage of our size."
In addition to Jackson, sophomore Damian Saunders has been filling out stat sheets with 13.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.20 steals and 2.24 blocks per game.
The game will likely feature plenty of 3-pointers as the 208 3-pointers made by UMass are the 21st in the nation, one ahead of the Dukes' 207.
MILESTONES - Tony Gaffney needs one steal to become the first player since Shelden Williams at Duke in 2005-06 to register 100 blocks and 50 steals in a season.
Gaffney's 104 blocks this season are the fifth most in UMass history, one behind Marcus Camby's 105 in 1993-94 and four behind Stephane Lasme's 108 in 2005-06. Camby also had 128 in 1995-96, and Lasme holds the school record with 168 in 2006-07.

MHERST, Mass. - Duquesne used an 11-0 run late in the first half to take control and send UMass to a 94-77 loss in Wednesday night's Atlantic 10 men's basketball game at the Mullins Center. Both teams bombed away from 3-point range, with UMass setting a school-record with 16 made 3-pointers. The Minutemen finished 16-for-35 (45.7%) from behind the arc, while Duquesne was 12-for-26 (46.2%). The 35 attempts and 16 makes both set school records.
UMass was led by Anthony Gurley's 18 points, while Chris Lowe finished with a double-double of 12 points and 11 assists.
Five Dukes finished in double-figures, led by Bill Clark's 22 points and Damian Saunders' 18.
UMass jumped out to an early 8-2 lead four minutes into the game thanks to 3-pointer by Luke Bonner and Matt Glass.
The Minutemen kept the lead throughout the first 12 minutes of the game until back-to-back Duquesne 3-pointers, by Jason Duty and Eric Evans, gave the Dukes their first lead of the game, 22-21, with eight minutes left in the half.
The Duquesne lead was just one when the Dukes went on an 11-0 run over a 2:14 span to take a 12-point lead, 44-32. A Harris 3-pointer stopped the run, but B.J. Monteiro scored at the buzzer to send Duquesne into halftime leading by 11, 46-35.
Clark led all scorers in the first half with 16 points, while The Minutemen were paced by Glass' nine. Both team's put up plenty of shots from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes, with UMass shooting 8-for-18 (44.4%) and 6-for-14 (42.9%).
The Duquesne shooters stayed hot to start the second half. A 9-0 Dukes run between 16:21 and 13:21 extended their lead to 21, 63-42. Jackson led the charge, scoring 10 points in the first seven and a half minutes of the half.
The Duquesne lead was at 20 when the clock went under nine minutes and UMass went on its own run. Gurley scored seven points in a 9-0 Minutemen run over 1:23 that cut the deficit to 13, 71-58. A pair of 3-pointers from Gurley and Gary Correia pulled UMass to within 10, 76-66, with 5:52 to go.
That was as close as UMass would get however, as the Dukes outscored the Minutemen, 8-2, between the four-minute and two and a half minute marks, extending the lead back to 16, 86-70.
The Minutemen return to action on Sunday when they travel to Philadelphia to take on La Salle at 5 p.m. in a game that will be televised on CBS College Sports.
Tony Gaffney became the first college player since Shelden Williams (Duke in 2005-06) with 100 blocks and 50 steals in a season. Gaffney, who entered the game with 104 blocks and 49 steals, now has 107 blocks and 52 steals in his senior season. Since 1996-97, there have been five players in the NCAA to have 100 blocks and 50 steals in a season: Gaffney, Williams, Mike Sweetney (Georgetown, 2002-03), Sitapha Savane (Navy, 1999-2000) and Rodger Farrington (Arizona State, 1996-97).
UMass set the school record for 3-pointers in a game with 16. Three times before UMass had made 15: earlier this season vs. Hofstra, vs. Green Bay last season and against Temple in 1997.
UMass attempted a school-record in 3-pointers with 35. Previously, UMass had taken 33 against Boston College this year and at Saint Joseph's in 2008.
Ricky Harris scored in double-figures for the 24th time in 26 games with 14. He has been in double-figures in 64 of his 94 career games.
Harris moved to 15th in career scoring at UMass with his 14. Harris passed Billy Tindall (1,277) and now has 1,278.
Chris Lowe moved to 32nd in career scoring with 12. He passed Shannon Crooks (1,074) and now has 1,082.
Lowe had his 16th game this season in double-figures and 46th of his career.
Lowe had 11 assists, his 14th career game, eighth this season in double-figure assists. Lowe now has 651 assists in his career, adding to his UMass career record total. Lowe is also sixth in career assists in the Atlantic 10.
Off the bench, Anthony Gurley had 18 points, his 14th game this season in double-figures.
Matt Glass had his season-high with 12 points. His previous best was nine against IUPUI (12/27). It's the second time he scored in double-figures in his career. He had a career-high 14 against St. Bonaventure (2/24/08).
Gaffney had 10 rebounds for his 17th game this season with double-figure rebounds.
Glass drew his fourth charge of the season.
Gary Correia drew his first charge of the season.
Luke Bonner opened the game with a 3-pointer, his 12th game in a row with a trey.
UMass suffered its first-ever loss to Duquesne at the Mullins Center, the Minutemen were 7-0 prior to this game.
Head Coach Derek Kellogg's general comments
I thought we started the game pretty well and didn't really take advantage of some opportunities that were there early on. When Duquesne came back at us, we didn't respond very well. I thought we went on our heels. We didn't quite battle back as hard as I would have liked. They made a ton of shots. We gave them 94 points. It looked liked one team was just superior athletically. They were flying and we weren't running as fast. If we weren't going to be able to take advantage of that game with our size, we might as well have been playing five guards ourselves. They did a nice job. They made shots. They shot 57 percent. They scored 94 points, and that's something that on your own court, you don't want to happen.
Coach Kellogg on losing at home
It's very frustrating because one thing I want to be able to do is be able to play well at home and hold a home court advantage. I want to be tough and want teams to not want to come in here. I would say right now, teams come in here and think it's going to be a shoot out. We're going to be able to score points and it's going to be a free pass for a wide open game. If you looked at teams that have given us problems throughout the course of the season, they have been the very athletic teams. I thought Duquesne was one of the more athletic teams I've seen this year, from Houston to Vanderbilt to these guys.
Chris Lowe on frustrating losses
It is very frustrating. It's not just one person, it's everyone that was put in that game- all ten of us. We gave them this game. We didn't even fight. They are very athletic team. They don't have a dominant five or four man. They get out and run. You can't make excuses, but it was hard for us when we have Luke as a traditional five man. He plays in the post, but their five man plays on the wing. You can't make any excuses. They had a better night than us. They were more athletic than us.
Chris Lowe on athletic teams
It's going to be different because we're not the same athletic team we were last year. It is very different this year when we come out against a real athletic team. That's what they work on every day. We could have switched the game plan up, but they just had a better night than us. They're more athletic than us. They made plays and we didn't make any plays.
Anthony Gurley on matching up with their athleticism
It was hard at times to pick up guys and match up. We needed to communicate more. I think that's what lead to some of their baskets and transition. We needed to get back on defense.
Duquesne Head Coach Ron Everhart thoughts for tonight's game
I have to give our kids a lot of credit. We played with a lot of energy. I thought our effort was good tonight. We share the basketball and guarded well. I don't know if I could have ever said we would win a game with our opponent scoring 16 three point baskets in a game. I think the good part for us was that the ones they did miss we were able to get the rebound and get out into the open floor. I can tell you that we walked out of here knowing that we beat a really good basketball team and that is a good feeling. We played well and we had a lot of contributions from a lot of guys. Any time you have five guys in double figures and another guy with 8 its pretty obvious that we shared the ball. I thought that we were exceptionally well at passing the ball tonight. We got a lead and it made them have to get out there and start trapping us. It's tough when Gaffney gets out there on the floor becaue he is so long and athletic. I thought our guards did a good job of taking care of the ball and finding the open man, making the extra pass to get us an easy shot.
Coach Everhart on preparing for UMass' defense
We play a little undersized so we felt that if we could force Gaffney and Bonner to have come out to guard us that we would be able to dribble penetrate or get the next pass. In transition we wanted to get the ball out into the floor and really push it so we could get that next pass and find the open guys. That way we could get it out to our shooters who could drive or get backdoor baskets.
Coach Everhart on playing on the road
We have a lot of freshman so the last thing I thought we would be coming into the season was a road team. I think it is one of two things, either A, we are too young and dumb to not know any better or B, we just stay more focused on the road because we are still young enough to have a little fear in our heart when we line up and play.
he Massachusetts mens basketball team and Duquesne appeared more interested in having a 3-point contest rather than an actual game for much of Wednesday nights matchup.
But while the Minutemen insisted on launching shots from all directions, the Dukes competed in their own dunk contest slamming home the Minutemen in a 94-77 win on UMass home floor.
The Minutemen hit a school-record 16, 3-pointers, but the Dukes countered with 12 of their own and absolutely pounded UMass down-low with seven dunks and 14 layups en route a 42-20 edge in points in the paint to earn the victory.
It looked like one team was just superior athletically they were flying and we were not running as fast, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said after the game. And if we werent going to be able to take advantage of the inside game with our size, then we may as well play four, five guards ourselves.
The Minutemen (10-16, 5-8 Atlantic 10) got off to a fast start hitting nearly every 3-pointer, but the Dukes tied the game at 31 before going on a 13-1 run to build momentum and take a lead they would never lose.
We gave them this game. We didnt even fight, they just came and swept us off the court, UMass point guard Chris Lowe said.
The Dukes (17-9, 8-5 A-10) led by as many 21 points with 13 minutes, 22 seconds left in the second half, but the Minutemen made things interesting going on a 26-15 spurt to cut the lead to 10 points with 4:44 left. But a Jason Duty 3-pointer and a Damian Saunders dunk later forced the Minutemen to leave the Mullins Center with their seventh home loss of the season.
Its very frustrating. One thing I want to be able to do is play well at home, hold home court advantage, be tough and have teams not want to come in here, Kellogg said. I would say right now teams come in here and think its going to be a shootout, were going to be able to score points and have a free pass to play a wide open game.
In addition to having problems at home, UMass cant string together consecutive wins. Wednesday nights loss marks the fifth straight failed opportunity for the Minutemen to claim back-to-back games. The last time they won in that situation was against IUPUI on Dec. 27 to extend their winning streak to four.
Duquesne continued that streak while ending one of its own, having lost 11 consecutive times at UMass. And the Dukes did it despite the Minutemen hitting 16-for-35 from 3-point range.
UMass can blame that on 20 turnovers, and Duquesnes dominance in the paint, where it outscored the Minutemen 13-0 on second-chance points and 48-20 on 2-point field goals.
They really get out and run. It was hard at times picking up guys and matching up, said Anthony Gurley, who led the Minutemen with 18 points off the bench. We really need to communicate more and I think thats what led to some of their easy baskets in transition.
The Minutemen got burned on backdoor cuts and the pick-and-roll, something Kellogg worked on his team with during practice this week.
Our guys didnt execute, Kellogg said. [Duquesne] went with the most basic of basketball they went high, middle pick-and-roll and they scored continuously on that. I hope no other team is watching that DVD.
Five different Dukes scored in double figures, led by Bill Clark (22 points, eight rebounds, eight assists), Saunders (18) and Aaron Jackson, who had 17 points and nine assists. Ricky Harris had 14, while Matt Glass and Lowe each added 12. Lowe also had 11 assists, but turned it over six times.
After Sundays thrilling last-second victory over Saint Josephs at the Palestra in Philadelphia, UMass thought the win could be a turning point in what has been a difficult season. But the Minutemen suffered another setback against Duquesne, falling to 10th in the conference.
UMass travels back to Philadelphia on Sunday for a road tilt against La Salle (14-12, 5-7 A-10), a team they lost to, 62-54, on Jan. 24 at the Mullins Center.
Game notes
Tony Gaffney (eight points, 10 rebounds) had three steals and two blocks for the Minutemen. He became the first player to have at least 100 blocks (107) and 50 steals (51) in a season since Dukes Shelden Williams in 2005-06. Hes only the sixth to do it since the 1996-97 season. The 17-point win for Duquesne was its largest ever against UMass in Amherst. The Dukes are off to their best start since 1981. Their 28 assists are a season-high and mark the sixth-highest total in school history. Duquesne had 11 steals.

MHERST - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team broke the school record for 3-pointers in a game, but it could not counteract Duquesne's parade of easy two-pointers Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
The Dukes defeated the Minutemen 94-77.
The on-again, off-again defensive pendulum for UMass (10-16, 5-8 Atlantic 10) swung heavily toward off as the Minutemen gave up the most points they have allowed all season.
Duquesne had 21 layups and dunks as the Dukes slipped free of defenders throughout the game for backdoor cuts which led to 57 percent shooting (36-for-63).
"They play five perimeter guys so we don't have (Luke) Bonner and (Tony) Gaffney clogging the lane helping everybody," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "We gave up a bunch of backdoor cuts. We went over it quite a bit that we didn't want to give those up."
Six different UMass players connected from deep, led by Ricky Harris and Matt Glass who each had four. Despite having a significant size advantage, UMass only attempted 20 two-point shots.
"I thought that we were exceptionally good passing the basketball and sharing the basketball," Duquesne coach Ron Everhart said. "I don't know if I'd ever say that we'd win a game with our opponents scoring 16 3-pointers. I know we're walking out of here knowing we beat a pretty good team."
The Dukes (17-9, 8-5 Atlantic 10) finished the first half on a 15-4 run to lead 46-35 at the break. Duquesne stretched that edge to 21 points near the midway point in the second half.
"When we got on our heels we didn't battle back quite as hard as I would have liked," Kellogg said.
UMass made a late surge and cut its deficit to 10 on a 3-pointer by Gary Correia with just under six minutes left, but never got closer.
"It's very frustrating. We didn't come out with the defensive intensity we needed. We didn't even fight. They just came on our court and swept us off the court," senior point guard Chris Lowe said. "We can't make any excuses ... They were more athletic than us. That's what it came down to. They made plays and we didn't make any plays."
Anthony Gurley, who had struggled in the previous two games since going from being a starter to the sixth man, led UMass with 18 points.
"It's all about accepting your role. It was hard for me at first, but I have to do what I have to do to help the team win," Gurley said.
Harris added 14, while Glass and Lowe (11 assists, six turnovers) each had 12.
Bill Clark scored a game-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds for the Dukes, while Damian Saunders added 18 points and seven boards. Aaron Jackson continued his quest for Atlantic 10 player of the year consideration with 17 points, nine assists and five rebounds for Duquesne.
The Minutemen return to the road Sunday for a 5 p.m. game at La Salle that will be televised by CBS Sports.

MHERST - There's a lot of work left to do if the Mullins Center is going to be the tough home court that University of Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg said he hoped it would become at his introductory press conference.
Wednesday's 94-77 loss to Duquesne dropped the Minutemen to 5-7 in Amherst this season, with four losses in their last five games.
It clinched the first-ever losing season for UMass in the Mullins Center and tied the most losses ever in the building in a season.
Wednesday's crowd of 3,321 also was a season low at home.
Only Fordham, which is 2-12 at Rose Hill Gymnasium, has a worse home record in the Atlantic 10.
"That's very frustrating. I want to play well at home and hold our home-court advantage," Kellogg said. "I want teams to not want to come in here."
Chris Lowe echoed his coach. "That's very, very frustrating," Lowe said. "In my first three years, we were a really good home team. We haven't been able to win at home."
TECHNICAL - Kellogg picked up his first career technical foul for arguing a call with 6 minutes, 42 seconds left in the game. Aaron Jackson missed both ensuing free throws.
It was the third technical called this season on the Minutemen. Lowe and Tyrell Lynch were whistled for the others.
HIGHS - The 94 points were the most allowed by UMass since it felling to Saint Joseph's 98-92 on Jan. 9, 2008.
Gary Correia's nine points, all on 3-pointers, were a career high.
ELITE COMPANY - Tony Gaffney's steal early in the first half made him the first player in all of Division I to record 100 blocks and 50 steals in a season since Shelden Williams did it for Duke in 2005-06.
MISCELLANEOUS - Duquesne ended its 11 game-losing streak against UMass in Western Massachusetts, which included seven games at the Mullins Center, three at Curry Hicks Cage and one at the Springfield Civic Center.
It was also the Dukes' largest margin of victory in any road game at UMass.
The UMass athletic marketing office is offering a bus trip to the Minutemen's game at 2 p.m. March 7 at Rhode Island. The ride and a ticket is $10.
