Win and in for Minutemen
By Eli Rosenswaike, Massachusetts Daily Collegian Staff, 3/4/2009

For two straight seasons, poor performances in the Atlantic 10 Tournament likely cost the Massachusetts men’s basketball team a bid into the NCAA Tournament.

With an 11-17 record, the Minutemen don’t have to worry about a similar fate this season. But if they can’t end their skid Wednesday night against George Washington, it may cost UMass a bid into the A-10 Tournament for the first time in school history.

Since Charlotte fell to 5-10 in conference play with a loss to Richmond Tuesday night, the Minutemen only need to win one of their final two games to clinch a spot in the tournament.

Wednesday’s senior-night tilt against the Colonials is simple: A win for UMass clinches a birth to Atlantic City. A loss would force the Minutemen to win their regular-season finale at Rhode Island on Saturday and hope GW falls to Temple later that night.

UMass coach Derek Kellogg prefers his team clinches sooner than later.

“With the potential of three to five teams all fighting for that last birth into the Atlantic 10 Tournament, it would be nice to hopefully get a win this week and put ourselves into position,” Kellogg said in Monday’s weekly teleconference. “So obviously we have to come out and play with that kind of desire and intensity and passion that that’s on the line.”

The Minutemen, who have lost eight of their last 11 games in conference play, are only concerned about themselves and the Colonials right now.

“We’re well aware, but we’re trying not to think about that and make this more about us. If we play the way we’re capable of playing on Wednesday that will be put to rest,” said Tony Gaffney following Sunday’s loss to La Salle.

“I hope we can get this win Wednesday so we can make it to Atlantic City,” added Ricky Harris. “I feel as though if we get to Atlantic City a lot of teams won’t want to play us.”

Considering UMass has already beaten two of the top four teams in the standings (Dayton and Temple) and gave the other two (Xavier and Rhode Island) a serious scare, Harris may be right. But the Minutemen may not get a chance to show it in the A-10 Tournament for the first time in school history, dating back to the 1976-77 season when the conference was created.

If UMass can get past the Colonials, a team that has won two straight and three of its last four, Harris and the Minutemen would lock up that opportunity. According to Kellogg, doing that is up to the players.

“At this point in the season your players have to take the team over, especially the older guys,” he said. “They need to make a statement that we’re really trying to do something here.”

UMass will see a 10-16 Colonials team that has been playing much better recently than their overall record indicates. GW, which started the conference season with seven-consecutive losses, has topped Richmond, Charlotte and St. Bonaventure since Feb. 19. Its only loss in that stretch was a 71-53 defeat to No. 17 Xavier.

GW is a young group that loves to push the ball up and down the floor. But the Colonials are led by their big-men, forwards Rob Diggs and Damian Hollis, who both lead the team in scoring with 13.2 points per game. Diggs and Hollis also rank 1-2 on the team in rebounding, respectively, and Hollis can also hurt teams with his inside-outside game.

Hollis had 21 points and 11 rebounds last season against UMass, but GW fell just short in a 67-63 loss on March 8 in Washington, D.C. Harris had 20 points in that game for the Minutemen, and Colonials coach Karl Hobbs is worried he’ll have more than that this time.

“The thing that makes [UMass] the most dangerous is that they got a guy that single-handedly can beat you in Harris,” Hobbs said in the weekly A-10 teleconference. “For us, he creates a major, major problem. I don’t know how we’re going to do it, but we got to contain Harris and not let him throw up 30 points.”

Hobbs also had high-praise for Tony Gaffney and Chris Lowe, whom he thinks does a great job controlling the frontcourt and backcourt, respectively, for UMass.

Gaffney, who sat out much of the second half in Sunday’s loss with knee tendonitis, is expected to play Wednesday. Considering the magnitude of the game, the fact that its senior night and that he’s been playing through injuries all season long, the senior forward will find a way to play – no matter the pain.

The Minutemen will need him in there to defend Diggs and Hollis, not to mention to defend their annual spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

Seniors' fight for postseason lives against GW
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 3/4/2009

AMHERST - Desperation figures to overshadow nostalgia on this senior night at the Mullins Center for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team.

A win in tonight's game at 7 against George Washington would assure the Minutemen seniors that they won't miss the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time in school history.

The Minutemen can clinch a spot in the 12-team tournament that begins March 11 in Atlantic City with a win. If UMass loses tonight, it would need to upset Rhode Island at 2 p.m. Saturday in Kingston.

Nine Atlantic 10 teams have clinched berths and Fordham is out of contention, leaving the Minutemen, Colonials, St. Bonaventure and Charlotte playing musical chairs for three spots.

The highest the Minutemen can finish is 10th.

UMass Seniors Chris Lowe, Tony Gaffney and Luke Bonner will all be honored before the game, along with managers Taisuke Sato and Matt Vogel. The players were focused far more on the game than the ceremony.

"Winning means more than senior night or any individual accomplishments," said Gaffney, who expects to play despite missing most of the second half at La Salle Sunday with a knee injury.

"Guys would be willing to trade anything to get to Atlantic City and do what we've been talking about all year," he added. "I know the scenarios to get in, but I'd rather not look to that. I'd rather take care of business" tonight.

Lowe agreed.

"It's a must-win situation," Lowe said. "I definitely want to end my career trying to make it to the NCAA Tournament. The three seniors have got to come ready to play. If we do, everyone else will follow."

UMass (10-17, 5-9 A-10) is facing George Washington at the wrong time. The Colonials (10-16, 4-10 A-10) lost 13 of 14 games from late December to mid-February with only a win over Fordham breaking up the long streak. But George Washington has improved lately, winning three of the last four over St. Bonaventure, Charlotte and Richmond.

Forwards Rob Diggs and Damian Hollis share the Colonials' scoring lead with each averaging 13.2 points per game. Diggs, a 6-foot-8 senior, also leads the team with 7.1 rebounds per game.

UMass, which is 6-7 in home games this season, can take some comfort in the George Washington's struggles on the road. The Colonials are 3-9 away from the Smith Center and two of those wins came before Christmas.

George Washington has won two of its last three games with UMass in Amherst.

The Minutemen have had a player register a triple double on each of their last two senior nights. Lowe had 14 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds against La Salle last year, while Stephane Lasme had 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocked shots against the Explorers in 2007.

Lowe is the all-time leader at UMass with 660 assists. If he maintains his average of 6.5 assists per game this season, that would be a school record as well.

"I remember coming in here as a little scrawny freshman and now I'm getting ready to leave this program," Lowe said. "I'm proud of the career I had. I set a record and scored 1,000 points. I did some good things here as a collegiate athlete. I'm happy with the career I had."

Gaffney, who transferred to UMass from Boston University after his sophomore year, was a role player in his first season as a Minuteman. But he has had a breakout senior season and is third in the nation with 4.04 blocks per game and in the national top 20 in rebounding with 10.3 per game.

Gaffney, who grew up in Berkley rooting for the Minutemen, said playing for them lived up to his hopes.

"Every kid dreams of playing for the school they've followed for 20-plus years," he said. "It's been something special for me. It's something I'll never forget and never take for granted."

At 7-foot-1 with 3-point shooting skills, Bonner has been a unique player for the Minutemen. He made more of an impact this year when he is averaging 7.3 points and 5.4 rebounds - than in any other season of his career. Bonner has been at UMass for three seasons after transferring from West Virginia.

"I've had an incredible experience at UMass," Bonner said. "We've had some great seasons here. I've definitely grown a lot. I love this area and I've been able to make the most of my education here."

UMass Dominates Second Half To Defeat GW, 77-62, On Senior Night
Minutemen outscore Colonials, 29-12, over final 12 minutes to clinch A-10 berth
From UMass Athletics, 3/4/2009

AMHERST, Mass. - On the night UMass honored seniors Luke Bonner, Tony Gaffney, and Chris Lowe, the Minutemen turned in an inspired second half effort to erase a three-point halftime deficit and defeat George Washington, 77-62, on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. The win clinches the Minutemen a berth in the Atlantic 10 Tournament and improves their record to 11-17 over all and 6-9 in A-10 play. GW falls to 10-17 overall and 4-11 in conference.

The Minutemen trailed by two with just over 12 minutes left before dominating the rest of the game, outscoring the Colonials, 29-12.

Ricky Harris led UMass with 19 points, shooting 5-for-8 from 3-point range. Gaffney and Lowe finished their Mullins Center careers with strong performances, scoring 11 and 14 points, respectively. Gaffney added 10 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season, while Lowe dished out eight assists. The Minutemen shot 44.8 percent from the field and 41.4 percent from 3-point range.

GW's Rob Diggs led all scorers with 22 points on 11-for-19 shooting. The Colonials shot 40.4 percent for the game.

After an emotional Senior Night ceremony before the game, the Minutemen flew out to a 9-2 lead in the opening two and half minutes. 10 of the team's first 13 points were scored by seniors Gaffney and Lowe. The lead reached nine before the Colonials went on an 11-2 run over a four minute span to tie the game, 15-15, with 11:52 left in the half.

The Minutemen built the lead back to six, 25-19, on a layup by Tyrell Lynch, but GW then ran off seven straight points to take its first lead of the game, 26-25, with 7:02 left in the half. That was the start of a 15-3 Colonials run over a six minute span that gave them a 34-28 lead with 1:45 left in the half.

A pair of Bonner free throws and a 3-pointer by Anthony Gurley pulled UMass back within three points at halftime, 36-33.

Lowe led the Minutemen with nine first half points, while the team shot better from 3-point range (37.5%) than from the field (35.5%) in the first 20 minutes. The Colonials shot 46.4 percent in the first half and were led by Diggs' 10 points.

The Minutemen started out hot again in the second half, outscoring the Colonials, 10-2, over the first 3:15 take the lead back, 43-38. Harris led the way during that stretch with two 3-pointers.

GW immediately responded with a 10-3 run, led by Diggs who scored eight points in the first eight minutes of the half, giving the Colonials a 50-48 lead with 12:11 to go.

That is when UMass went on a 14-4 run over 3:58 to take control of the game, 62-54, with 7:48 to go. The run was highlighted by a steal and dunk by Gaffney and bookended by 3-pointers, from David Gibbs and Matt Glass.

The Minutemen close out the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Rhode Island to take on the Rams in a 7 p.m. tip. From there it will be on to Atlantic City for the Atlantic 10 Tournament first round next Wednesday at Boardwalk Hall.

QUOTES

UMass Head Coach Derek Kellogg's general comments
I'm happy for our three seniors: Chris Lowe, Luke Bonner, and Tony Gaffney. I'm happy one, because we got a win in their last game in the Mullins Center and two I think that they were the deciding factor in the second half. I thought those guys played great and did a lot of things that seniors are supposed to do in the second half of an important game. This game gets us into the Atlantic 10 Tournament, and it gets us a chance. To say the least, I am ecstatic that we won tonight. I thought we played a good basketball game with a lot of energy and a lot of passion and enthusiasm. It was the way Senior Night is supposed to be.

Coach Kellogg on how the La Salle game affected tonight's game
I think we did. It also gave me a chance to watch some guys in the press and see our athleticism in certain situations. I also thought there was some carryover, we didn't quit against La Salle, even when we got down over 20. We actually believed we could win in that situation, and I think that carried over tonight and in the past couple days in practice. We did a couple different things defensively and offensively that I think peaked a few guys' interests and made them play a little harder.

Coach Kellogg on David Gibbs
He has made some huge shots for us, and as he continues to mature, I'm expecting him to make a ton of huge shots for the rest of this year, but also for the rest of his career. This is a young man with unlimited potential, and as soon as he realizes how good he can be, he'll continue to get better and better. Right now, when he makes threes, that really gives us one more weapon. I think for us to be good, and have a chance to do something special, he has to really step his game up and continue to play with the attitude he has. He is competing.

Coach Kellogg on difference in the last two games
If you watched us play, we haven't pressed this much all year. We did more trapping and sped the game up quite a bit. Chris Lowe and Ricky Harris were happy because it gives them more of a chance to play up and down. Ricky really thrives off that, the opportunity to steal balls. I told his to try and steal some tonight. Chris is much better in the open floor. The reality of it is, I would like to play a little faster and a little more like this, but I also wanted to make sure that we did wear our guys down and took advantage of Luke. We cut his minutes a little bit, probably not so much tonight or against La Salle, but he is competing at a higher level for less amount of time. That is what you try to do in college basketball, get your guys to play harder for a shorter amount of time.

Chris Lowe on his four years at UMass
No one knew who I was when I came here. People probably had doubts about me when I came here. And you look at where I am now, I set the record for most assists, I scored 1000 points. I did this, I did that. I had a great time here. I went through a little tough time with the coaching change. I'm just trying to stay positive and be happy. Be grateful that I had a chance to play college basketball. I am just happy that I have these players around me and this coaching staff around me.

Tony Gaffney on his four years at UMass
When I was at Boston University, I dealt with whether or not I was going to even play Division I college basketball anymore. I transferred and I am just grateful that I found UMass and this has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. Our whole lives, our dream has been to play college basketball. It has never been anything more than that, never been anything less than that. Seeing it coming to an end is kind of surreal. What is in store next, no one knows for any of us.

Luke Bonner on his four years at UMass
I think we all have a grasp on the magnitude of what college basketball has had on our personal lives. It is like seizing the moment. If you reflect on it, every year, going into basketball, it has been tough at times. You think, I have to make it through this. How am I going to make it through? You start playing games and you get into the flow. Then you think, what's next. In terms of my college experience, it has been incredible. I have had an unbelievable college experience. I love western Massachusetts. It suits me well. When Pennie was here, we would always talk and find ourselves in weird situations. At Rupp Arena, pregame, there were fans mooning us. We would be in the huddle, and he would tap me on the shoulder and be like, `This is awesome!' How many thousands of people are paying money to come watch us play a game? That is awesome. Just to have that experience is unreal and I am very thankful for that.

UMass clinches playoff berth on Senior Night
By Eli Rosenswaike, Massachusetts Daily Collegian Staff, 3/5/2009

Derek Kellogg never missed qualifying for an Atlantic 10 Tournament as a player, so he wasn’t about to become the first coach in team history to have that distinction.

But the first-year coach of the Massachusetts men’s basketball team certainly had to sweat it out.

A 13-0 run by the Minutemen down the stretch lifted UMass over George Washington, 77-62, Wednesday night at the Mullins Center to finally clinch a spot in Atlantic City, N.J.., for the conference tournament.

It wasn’t tough to sense the enormous relief of the UMass players after the game in an interesting sequence at the post-game press conference.

“We were not leaving tonight without a win – there was no way,” began senior Luke Bonner.

“We probably would have all been ejected if something went wrong,” interrupted Chris Lowe.

Then Tony Gaffney took it to the extreme.

“We would have had to bring in some ambulances for us, because I wasn’t leaving alive if we didn’t win,” Gaffney said.

There was no need for that, as Gaffney and the Minutemen live to see another day until at least Wednesday, March 11, when the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament tips off. If UMass beats Rhode Island in the regular-season finale on Saturday, it would clinch the 10th seed. With a loss, the Minutemen would be No. 11.

Having lost eight of their last 11 games, it wasn’t a lock for UMass to even make the tournament. The Minutemen (11-17, 6-9 A-10) entered senior night with no guarantee of a tournament berth – needing a win against either GW or URI.

That didn’t look like a sure thing as UMass clung to a 5-point lead with 6 minutes, 25 seconds remaining – but monster defensive efforts from seniors Gaffney and Bonner sparked the Minutemen to a 13-0 run on the offensive end to seal the victory and clinch their spot.

“I thought [the seniors] were the deciding factor in the second half and they did a lot of things that seniors are supposed to do in the second half of an important game,” Kellogg said. “I was over there battling with the guys and my voice is gone … it was the way senior night was supposed to be.”

The seniors showed it over the final 6:25. Gaffney was blocking shots, Bonner was taking charges and grabbing offensive rebounds and Lowe was controlling the offense in the 13-0 run spanning 5:34 of the clock.

The Colonials had no answer for the shot-blocking duo of Gaffney and Bonner, missing 12 consecutive shots in that span.

“When you’re players are doing what they do well, that means they’re playing their roles. And when they do that good things usually happen,” Kellogg said. “Chris is very fast and good in the open floor, Tony is kind of a jack-of-all-trades guy and Luke does a great job of anchoring the defense, getting some offensive rebounds and knocking down some 3-point shots.”

But it wasn’t just the seniors. Ricky Harris had a team-high 19 points, while Anthony Gurley (12) and David Gibbs (eight) hit key shots and free-throws down the stretch. Gurley and Harris had 10 consecutive points for the Minutemen during that key run.

The Colonials (10-17, 4-11 A-10) entered the game having won three of their last four to put themselves in a position to sneak into the tournament. Despite the loss, GW can still get in with a win over Temple and a Charlotte victory over St. Bonaventure on Saturday.

Bonner was just glad that the Minutemen clinched and now don’t have to worry about any scenarios.

“That was one of the first games in a while where something significant was on the line and we didn’t let that get to us,” he said. “Guys came out and had great attitudes even though we were playing hard in the first half and found ourselves down at halftime. We didn’t let that shake us.”

UMass trailed 36-33 entering halftime. Harris hit two early 3-pointers in the second half to regain the lead for the Minutemen. The Colonials tied the score at 45, but Gibbs hit two of his own in a 58-second span to twice give UMass back the lead – the second of which gave the Minutemen the lead for good.

Lowe finished with 14 points and eight assists, while Gaffney had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He also had three blocks and five steals. Senior Rob Diggs led the Colonials with 22 points and nine rebounds.

UMass wins trip to Atlantic City for A-10 basketball tourney
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 3/5/2009

AMHERST - Just moments after the final buzzer sounded Wednesday night, Mullins Center public address announcer George Miller announced how University of Massachusetts fans could get tickets to next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament in Atlantic City.

For the first time all season, it was a safe announcement to make.

No matter what happens Saturday at Rhode Island, the Minutemen are headed to "America's Playground" after beating George Washington 77-62.

"We were not leaving tonight without a win," UMass senior big man Luke Bonner said.

At 6-9 in league play (11-17 overall), the Minutemen could finish 10th in the conference with a win Saturday and no worse than 11th even if they lose to the Rams. UMass will play either the sixth or seventh seed in the 12-team tournament Wednesday at Boardwalk Hall.

"I'm ecstatic that we won tonight. We played with a lot of passion and enthusiasm in the second half," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "Tonight was a total team effort led by our seniors."

After his team nearly came all the way back from 26 points down against La Salle Sunday using a run-and-press attack, Kellogg employed that approach from the beginning of Wednesday's game.

It worked early as the Minutemen raced out to a 13-4 lead, but their offense sputtered as intermission approached. A late 8-0 run helped push the Colonials (10-17, 4-11 A-10) to a 36-33 lead at halftime.

But the UMass pressure seemed to wear down George Washington after intermission. The Minutemen came out of the break on an 8-2 surge to lead 43-38. But the Colonials answered with a 7-2 momentum-stealing burst to tie the game 45-45 with 13 minutes, 28 seconds remaining.

David Gibbs, who made his first collegiate start to give the Minutemen more quickness, stripped Travis King and passed the ball to Chris Lowe who gave it back to Gibbs on the wing. The freshman guard buried a 3-pointer to put UMass back on top.

King atoned for his turnover with his own 3 to tie the game at 48-48. After a Minuteman turnover, Rob Diggs delivered a breakaway dunk to give the visitors the lead.

But the Minutemen got the ball to Gibbs and the freshman, who had a big 3-pointer in the 61-60 win on Dec. 13, delivered another one to put the Minutemen ahead 51-50 with 11:49 left. The play started a 7-0 run that put UMass ahead for good.

"He's made some huge plays this year. As he continues to mature and get older I'm expecting him to make a ton of huge plays," Kellogg said. "I think he's a young man with unlimited potential. When he hits those 3s, that gives us one more weapon."

The Minutemen did not put George Washington away until late, but the Colonials did not get the score down to within one possession for the last 8:28.

During a 76-second stretch late in the game, Bonner and Tony Gaffney combined for three blocked shots that seemed to sap George Washington's remaining energy.

Diggs led the Colonials with 22 points and nine rebounds.

In order to make the A-10 tournament, the Colonials need to defeat Temple on Saturday and have Charlotte beat St. Bonaventure.

Ricky Harris led the Minutemen with 19 points. Gaffney added 11 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and three blocked shots.

Lowe had 14 points and eight assists and thrived in the faster pace.

"It's the end of the season, there's no reason to hold back," Lowe said. "He let us go play and we're running with it."

Seniors make a difference
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 3/5/2009

AMHERST - With the game and perhaps their season on the line in the second half of Wednesday's game against George Washington, the University of Massachusetts seniors who were honored before the contest did what they do best to deliver the win.

"I was happy for our seniors that they got a win in their last game in the Mullins Center," Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said. "They were the deciding factor in the second half. They did a lot of things seniors were supposed to do."

Tony Gaffney had two of his three blocked shots, three of his five steals and seven of his 10 rebounds in the second half.

Luke Bonner, who has carved out an odd niche for himself as a charge-taker, took two in the second half.

He has taken 26 of the 35 UMass charges this season.

Chris Lowe, the Minutemen's all-time leader in assists with 668, would likely be among the school's career leaders in spinning, odd-angle driving layups if such stats were kept. Lowe had six of his eight assists after intermission and a key twisting layup as the Minutemen pulled away to the 77-62 win.

"Guys played with the urgency we hoped to play with all year," Gaffney said. "Hopefully we're clicking at the right time. It was a full team effort."

NEXT UP - UMass plays its final regular-season game at Rhode Island at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Rams are 22-8 (11-4 Atlantic 10) and have won 10 of their last 11 games.

Rhode Ialand could be playing for the regular-season championship if Dayton beats Xavier tonight.

MILESTONES - Gaffney's five steals gave him 57 this season. That ties him with Lowe's total in 2007-08 as the seventh best single-season in school history.

HOMECOURT - UMass drew 3,982 fans Wednesday giving it a Mullins Center average of 5,065 up by 165 over last year's average of 4,900.

The Minutemen finished 7-7 at home this season, including one win at the Springfield Civic Center.

MISCELLANEOUS - With David Gibbs starting, Gary Correia and Matt Hill, who has been injured since November, are the only scholarship players who have not been in at least one Minuteman starting lineup this season.

Anthony Gurley (12 points) was in double digits off the bench for the third straight game.

UMass earns A-10 bid
By John Connolly, The Boston Herald, 3/5/2009

AMHERST - With his team’s season approaching a red light, first-year UMass coach Derek Kellogg picked the perfect time to flash the green light and allow the Minutemen to play at full throttle.

The resurgent Minutemen, displaying far more grit and toughness under the basket than previously witnessed this season, responded with a convincing 77-62 victory over George Washington last night in the Mullins Center.

The win, coming before a Senior Night crowd of 3,982, clinched a berth in next week’s Atlantic 10 tournament in Atlantic City, N.J.

“To say the least, I’m ecstatic that we won tonight. I thought we played a good basketball game tonight with a lot of energy, lot of passion, and enthusiasm and played with some toughness in the second half,” Kellogg said.

UMass was led by junior guard Ricky Harris, who had 19 points and hit 5-of-8 from beyond the 3-point line.

Kellogg lifted his three seniors - guard Chris Lowe (14 points, eight assists), forward Tony Gaffney (11 points, game-high 10 rebounds) and center Luke Bonner (six points, six rebounds) - with just over a minute to play to allow the fans to show their appreciation.

“It was pretty sweet,” said Bonner after his class improved its four-year record to 73-52. “It was one of the first games in a while with something significant on the line and we didn’t let it get to us. We were down at the half and didn’t let it shake us. We were not leaving tonight without a win.”

UMass (11-17, 6-9), which has won 10 of the last 13 meetings with the Colonials (10-17, 4-11), trailed at halftime, 36-33, while getting outscored 16-8 in the paint and 8-5 in second chance points. The Minutemen responded after intermission by beating GW, 18-10, in the paint and 6-5 on second chances points.

More importantly, UMass did it with an up-tempo style that produced an 18-4 edge in fast-break points, and a 22-8 advantage off turnovers.

“We did a couple of things that we hadn’t done much of before,” Kellogg said. “We did more trapping in the open court and kind of speeded the game up. . . . That’s what you want to do in college basketball: Play harder for shorter minutes.”
