ith the disaster of missing the postseason averted, the Massachusetts mens basketball team can breathe a sigh of relief, but must now refocus on securing a higher seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
With an A-10 Tournament berth clinched with the win over George Washington on Wednesday night, the Minutemen (11-17, 6-9 A-10) will try to improve their tournament seeding when they face Rhode Island on the road this Saturday in the teams regular-season finale.
This will be the second meeting between the teams this year; the Rams (22-8, 11-4 A-10) defeated UMass, 71-59, at the Mullins Center on Feb. 18. During that game the Minutemen held a 31-19 lead in the first half, but a sluggish second half combined with a career-high 26 points from URI reserve Keith Cothran sank UMass.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg will look to avoid a repeat by trying to push the tempo against URI and in the A-10 Tournament.
There may be some times when we go to Atlantic City where we have to back off a little bit because its four games in four days, Kellogg said after Wednesday nights game. But I think we can wear some other teams down and push tempo and get some free easy baskets if we play fast.
If UMass defeats Rhode Island, it will earn the 10th seed in the tournament. A loss drops them to the 11th seed.
The Minutemen have made some adjustments since that game, particularly in the starting lineup. Matt Glass started the first game at Rhode Island, but Wednesday against George Washington gave David Gibbs his first start of the season and received a strong performance with eight points in 17 minutes.
This is a young man with unlimited potential, and as soon as he realizes how good he can be, he'll continue to get better and better, Kellogg said.
Anthony Gurley had the worst game of his career against the Rams the first time around, getting shut out on the stat sheet in his first game coming off the bench in 15 minutes of action. Since then he has adapted to his new role as a reserve and has scored double digits in each of UMass last three games.
Point guard Chris Lowe started off strong in the first meeting with URI with five assists in the first half, but he had zero in the second half and finished with nine turnovers. The Minutemen will need him to be more consistent to win a tough road test against a hot Rhode Island team.
Lowe is happy with the new up-tempo style of play that Kellogg has been preaching, and feels it makes the Minutemen a better team.
Its the end of the season now, no reason to hold back. He told us to give everything you got and hes just throwing the dogs out there now and letting us play, Lowe said. I think were just running with it, we like to do that so everyone is happy. Everyones not going to play as many minutes, but were going to be a better team offensively and defensively.
One aspect of the first game UMass hopes to repeat is the defense it played against Rhode Islands top scorer Jimmy Baron. Baron was held to six points, 10 below his average of 16.6.
A win Saturday would give UMass its first winning streak since it won four games in a row Dec. 10-27; it would also halt URIs six-game winning streak.

MHERST - With an Atlantic 10 Tournament berth sewn up, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team can set its sights on improving its seed in Atlantic City in its final regular-season game at Rhode Island at 2 p.m. Saturday.
A win would give the Minutemen (11-17, 6-9 Atlantic 10) the No. 10 seed in next week's tournament and a first-round game at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday against the No. 7 seed. A loss would drop UMass to No. 11 and a 9 p.m. game against the No. 6 seed.
Four teams - La Salle, Richmond, Saint Louis and Saint Joseph's - are currently tied for sixth at 8-7 in conference play, so UMass won't know its opponent until after Saturday's games have been played.
Rhode Island (22-8, 11-4 A-10) is locked into the No. 2 seed in the tournament, but a Ram win and a Xavier loss at Richmond would give URI a share of the Atlantic 10 regular-season title. More importantly it would keep Rhode Island in consideration for an NCAA at-large bid.
Before Friday games, URI was ranked No. 47 in the Ratings Percentage Index, which puts it on the bubble for an NCAA bid.
The Rams defeated UMass 71-59 on Feb. 18 at the Mullins Center, pulling away in the second half. The game was win No. 2 in Rhode Island's current six-game winning streak. Rhode Island has won 10 of its last 11, which also helps its NCAA Tournament chances.
Minuteman senior point guard Chris Lowe said regardless of the other implications, the game simply matters because it's UMass vs. Rhode Island.
"It's definitely a rivalry game," he said. "Their players don't like us. We don't like them. Their coaches and our coaches don't like each other. You're not supposed to like every opponent, but this is even more special."
In the previous meeting, the Minutemen held Jimmy Baron to just six points, but Keith Cothran killed UMass with 26 points. "We're hoping he misses some shots this time. We have to do a better job with him. He got too many straight-line drives last time," Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said.
Saturday's game at the Ryan Center in Kingston, which was sold out by Thursday, is senior day for the Rams who will honor Baron, Kahiem Seawright and James Francis.
This game figures to be at least a little different because Kellogg is committed to playing with the same full-court pressing and trapping style he used in the second half of the loss at La Salle March 1 and all of Wednesday's 77-62 win over George Washington.
"We really can't do too, too much in practice because of the limited number of bodies we have," Kellogg said. "We've played three games in six days. I don't want to wear these guys out."
The Minutemen got a lift against the Colonials from freshman guard David Gibbs, who had eight points and two very big 3-pointers in his first career start. Kellogg said he hopes that Gibbs and fellow freshman Tyrell Lynch would continue to play well Saturday and into the tournament.
"It was a huge boost the way Gibbs played the other night and the way Tyrell has played in spurts this year," Kellogg said. "We need the guys who are supposed to play well to play well and have some other guys step up."

KINGSTON, R.I. - Trailing by one with 6.5 seconds left, senior Chris Lowe, in his final regular season game, drove the length of the court and scored with .6 seconds on the clock to give UMass a 72-71 road victory over Rhode Island at the Ryan Center on Saturday afternoon. The teams traded leads six times in the final two and a half minutes. The Minutemen head into next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament 12-17 overall and 7-9 in A-10 play. The Rams fall to 22-9 overall and 11-5 in conference.
Four different Minutemen registered in double-figures, led by Lowe's 18, while he also dished out seven assists. Ricky Harris and Matt Glass both finished with 13 points, while Gary Correia added 12.
URI was led by Jimmy Baron's 22 points, 16 of which came in the second half.
The Minutemen shot 43.5 percent from the game, including 9-for-24 from 3-point range, while the Rams shot 41.4 percent and 4-for-19 from behind the arc.
After URI took an early lead, the Minutemen scored eight straight points, with 3-pointers from Glass and Correia, between the 16:23 and 14:26 marks to give them a 12-6 lead. The UMass lead reached eight, 24-16, with another Glass 3-pointer at the 9:40 mark.
UMass would then go 3:45 without a field goal, a period in which the Rams would outscore the Minutemen, 10-2, and tie the game, 26-26, with 6:36 left in the half. URI eventually took the lead, 30-28, on two free throws by Lamonte Ulmer with 4:56 left, as the Rams' run extended to 16-4 and their lead reached four.
The Minutemen would turn the tide however, outscoring the Rams, 13-5, over the final four and a half minutes of the first half to take a 41-37 lead into the locker room. Correia led the charge with a pair of 3-pointers.
Glass was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc, on his way to 13 first half points to lead all scorers. Correia was 2-for-2 from long range as the Minutemen shot 7-for-13 on 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes. Conversely, URI, who was led by Ulmer's 10 points, were 0-for-12 from 3-point range in the first half, while outscoring UMass in the paint, 30-19.
Five different players hit UMass' first five field goals of the second half, as the Minutemen lead reached as much as seven on a Harris layup at the 17:43 mark. URI started to chip away at the lead as its leading scorer, Baron, who had six points in the first half, started to heat up. His jumper at the 8:51 mark cut the UMass lead to one, 57-56.
A David Gibbs 3-pointer and a floater in the lane by Lowe built the UMass lead back to six, 62-56, with 6:35 left, but the Rams would then go on a 10-2 run, with a Baron 3-pointer giving URI its first lead of the second half, 66-64, with 2:23 left.
The teams traded the lead three more times between then and the 37 second mark, when a Luke Bonner free throw gave UMass a 70-69 lead.
On the ensuing Rams possession, Jones was fouled with 6.5 seconds left and made both ends of a 1-and-1 to give URI the lead back, 71-70.
After a timeout, Lowe took the inbounds pass and raced up the left side of the court, picking up a great screen from Glass to give him a seam down the lane where he hit the contested layup for the win.
The Minutemen will be back in action on Wednesday, March 11 for the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
Matt Glass had a career game with a near career-high 13 points. He had 13 in the first half alone including 5-of-5 from the floor and 3-of-3 from 3-point range. The made field goals were a new career-high. The attempts (6) also tied his career high.
Glass reached double-figures for the third time in his career and second time this season. He had 10 in the first 10:30 of the game alone.
Glass also had his first-career slam dunk.
Gary Correia also set his career-high with 12 points. It was his first-career game in double-figures. Correia also set career-highs in field goals made (4), made 3-pointers (4).
Correia equaled his career-high in the first half alone with nine points. It was the second time in four games he reached the mark as he set it against Duquesne (2/25/09).
Ricky Harris reached double-figures for the 27th time in 29 games this season and 67 in his career with 13 points.
Tony Gaffney had his 19th game this season with 10 or more rebounds with 10.
Gaffney had two steals to give him 59 this season, moving him to sixth on the all-time UMass single-season list.
Chris Lowe scored in double-figures for the 19th time this season and eighth game in a row with 16. It was his 49th career game with 10 or more.
Lowe also drew a 5-second call on Rhode Island with less than two minutes left in the game. It was his first of the season.
Luke Bonner drew his 27th charge of the season in just 22 games. He has 27 of UMass' 37.
UMass held the 3-point bombing Rams without a 3-point field goal in the first half (0-of-12) and for the first 25:13 minutes of the game (0-fo-13). That included an 0-of-6 start from Jimmy Baron, who became the A-10's all-time leader in made 3-pointers in the game with his second trifecta of the afternoon.
Coach Derek Kellogg's General Comments
That is our style of coaching basketball. Rhode Island played very well and put themselves in a position to win the game at the end. In college basketball, it's funny. Some games the ball goes in, some games it doesn't. Fortunately for us, Chris Lowe made a great play. Went through three guys and that was a good player making a good play. That is what college basketball is supposed to be. There were some times down the stretch where Baron would hit a three and this place would erupt and they went up a couple. I was a little nervous for awhile. I was proud of our seniors, I thought they really stepped it up. They took the team over down the stretch.
Coach Kellogg on setting up the last play for Chris Lowe
I gave it to Chris because you put the ball in your senior point guard's hands so that he can make a play. I gave him the ball and said make a play. We've done that quite a few times this year. Down the stretch, he has really started to make those plays and become more confident with that role and with our style of play. It takes time sometimes and I think our players are starting to come around.
Coach Kellogg on Matt Glass' pick to set Chris Lowe free
That was a blind pick and he did a heck of a job of finding Chris Lowe's man and that was the way the play was designed to screen him and to give him a lane to make a play. It was as good of a designed play as those guys executed it. They did a heck of a job.
INGSTON, R.I. - University of Massachusetts junior guard Ricky Harris said last week that the Minutemen wanted to be a team nobody wanted to play in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
After upsetting Rhode Island 72-71 Saturday at the Ryan Center, UMass looks like such a team.
Trailing 71-70 after two free throw by Marquis Jones with 6.5 seconds left, Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said he thought about his team's win at Saint Joseph's on Feb. 22 and called the same play that produced that victory.
On Saturday, Chris Lowe took the inbounds pass from Tony Gaffney under the UMass basket and took off down the floor. A crushing pick from Matt Glass left Lamonte Ulmer reeling on the floor and freed Lowe to attack the basket. Using his body as a screen from would-be shot blockers, Lowe laid the ball in with his left hand at the buzzer to give the Minutemen the win.
The UMass bench emptied onto the floor in celebration.
"It was a very well executed play by our team," Kellogg said. "It was a great screen by Matt Glass and an unbelievable layup by Chris Lowe over three guys... I said in the time-out #There were 6.8 seconds left against St. Joe's. Let's see if we can make something happen here again.'"
Lowe hit two free throws for the 70-69 win over the Hawks.
"I knew Matty was going to set that screen and another man was going to come," Lowe said. "I had to put a move on him and get to the basket. God let the shot go in and we won. I felt good about it. I kissed that thing high off the backboard so they couldn't hit it."
The win gave the Minutemen (12-17, 7-9 Atlantic 10) the No. 10 seed in the A-10 Tournament. UMass will play No. 7 Duquesne (18-11, 9-7 A-10) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Boardwalk Hall. The Dukes defeated the Minutemen 94-77 at the Mullins Center on Feb. 25.
If UMass beats Duquesne it would face the second-seeded Rams (22-9, 11-5 A-10) again at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Minutemen led for most of Saturday's game, but a 10-2 run capped by a Jimmy Baron 3-pointer gave the Rams a 66-64 lead with 2:24 remaining. One free throw by Gaffney and two by Lowe put UMass back ahead 67-66, but another 3-pointer by Baron gave the Rams a 69-67 advantage with 1:22 left.
Lowe answered with a driving layup to tie the game at 69-69, and Luke Bonner made one of two free throws to put UMass up 70-69 with 38 seconds left.
Bonner fouled Jones who was driving to the basket with 6.5 seconds left. Jones made both shots for Rhode Island's final lead at 71-70, setting up the final play.
Lowe led the Minutemen with 18 points and seven assists. Harris and Glass each had 13 points and Gary Correia added 12.
Baron led the Rams with 22.
UMass led 41-37 at halftime on the strength of career halves by Glass and Gary Correia. Glass had 13 points, including his first career dunk on a baseline drive.
Correia, a Rhode Island native, showed off some rare offense in front of his home state by matching his career high with nine points in the first half. Correia added another three in the second half and finished with 12 points in 16 minutes.
"If the bench plays like that we can win the Atlantic 10 Tournament," Lowe said. "Easily."

INGSTON, R.I. - Matt Glass knew it was going to hurt, but the University of Massachusetts sophomore braced for the impact late in Saturday's game and hoped that the result would be worth the discomfort.
As Lamonte Ulmer of Rhode Island backpedaled, trying to stay with Chris Lowe who was racing up the court, he didn't see Glass waiting to set the pick with the game's final seconds running out.
When the impact left Ulmer laid out reeling in pain, seemingly half of the pro-Ram crowd shouted for a foul on Glass while the other half just gasped at the noise of the collision.
Glass looked around just in time to see Lowe's game-winner beat the buzzer in the 72-71 Minuteman victory.
"I turned around just as it hit off the board and fell through," said Glass, still hurting a bit from the hit.
"What a finish. It never feels good, but for the end result to work out like that it was definitely worth it."
One of the first players to celebrate with Lowe was sophomore Gary Correia.
Three weeks ago, Glass and Correia each played just eight minutes when UMass lost 83-75 at St. Bonaventure.
But on Saturday, the former prep school teammates at Northfield Mount Hermon played an integral part in the Minutemen's upset win over the Rams. Correia had a career-high 12 points, including nine in the first half.
Glass had 13 points, just one off his career high. Normally just a catch-and-shoot 3-point artist, Glass hit a runner and then dunked on a baseline drive in the first half.
"We're role players. To be able to make contributions like that in a game like that was a lot of fun," Glass said.
It was particularly fun for Correia, who grew up in nearby Providence. "I had my career high in scoring in a crazy game right here with family and friends in the stands," he said. "Having a chance to be a winning part of a game like that was very rewarding."
BARON RECORD - Jimmy Baron, who did not hit a single 3-pointer against UMass when Rhode Island won 71-59 on Feb. 18 at the Mullins Center, had four 3s Saturday as part of his game-high 22 points. The second one pushed him past former Charlotte guard Darnell Harris as the Atlantic 10's all-time leader in 3-pointers. Baron now has 345.
MISCELLANEOUS - Minuteman quarterback Liam Coen was in the sellout crowd of 7,707 at the Ryan Center, as was former UMass basketball player Papa Lo, who is sitting out as a transfer at nearby Bryant College.
Ronell Blizzard, who played for the Minutemen from 1999 to 2002, also was at the game.

INGSTON, R.I. - Seventh-seeded Duquesne will get the first shot at slowing the newfound momentum of the 10th-seeded University of Massachusetts men's basketball team in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
After back-to-back wins to close the regular season, UMass senior point guard Chris Lowe said he is excited about trying to keep the momentum going.
"We have nothing to lose. The pressure is on the top teams. We're just going to go out and play all out," Lowe said. "We're just going to keep playing.
"... It's working. We're having fun," he added. "We're just going to keep rolling the dice."
After a wild Saturday that finished the A-10 regular season, tiebreakers were needed to seed the four teams that finished 9-7 in league play, Duquesne (18-11 overall), which fell to Dayton 74-61 Saturday, would have been the No. 5 seed with a win but came out of the 9-7 logjam as the No. 7.
The winner of the opening-round game between the Minuteman (12-17, 7-9 A-10) and the Dukes plays No. 2 Rhode Island (22-9, 11-5 A-10) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday
The Rams, along with No. 1 Xavier, No. 3 Dayton and No. 4 Temple all have first-round byes and will begin play Thursday.
No. 8 La Salle and No. 9 Saint Louis who played Saturday will meet again at noon Wednesday to open the tournament, followed by No. 5 Saint Joseph's facing No. 12 Charlotte at about 2:30 p.m..
No. 6 Richmond and No. 11 St. Bonaventure wrap up the first-round matchups. They will play at about 9 p.m. Wednesday after the UMass game.
The Dukes could be a difficult opponent for the Minutemen's new run-and-press style because they have played that way all season and for the past several years. Duquesne beat UMass 94-77 on Feb. 25 at the Mullins Center.
The Minutemen are trying to break a seven-game losing streak in Atlantic 10 Tournament play. UMass has gone winless since a 73-62 victory over George Washington in the first round of the 2002 tournament at the Spectrum.

OUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. Senior point guard Chris Lowes bucket with 0.6 seconds left yesterday gave UMass a 72-71 victory over Rhode Island at the Ryan Center in the regular-season finale, and the No. 10 seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
UMass (12-17, 7-9) will face the No. 7 seed in a first-round game at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Atlantic City, N.J. The Rams (22-9, 11-5) have the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye.
Were just going to keep playing, Lowe said of the A-10 Tournament. Coach, whatever he wants us to do, well do it, Lowe said. Theres nothing to lose. We dont feel pressure. Were just going to go out there and play all out.
With Rhode Island ahead, 71-70, with 6.5 seconds to play, UMass senior Tony Gaffney threw an inbounds pass to Lowe under the URI basket, and Lowe used his speed to sprint upcourt. Spinning through two defenders and taking advantage of an all-but-free route to the basket, thanks to an impressive pick by Matt Glass on Lamonte Ulmer, Lowe leapt to the left side of the hoop and rolled the ball in for the score.
I knew Matty was going to set that screen, so I just had to get by those guys and get to the basket, Lowe said. I felt good about (the shot).
The plan was to put the ball in your senior guards hands, said UMass coach Derek Kellogg, whose team lost to URI by 12 points in last month Amherst. College basketball is funny. Some games, the ball goes in for you, and sometimes, it doesnt. Were a very good basketball team right now. Were a dangerous opponent because of our style and the way were shooting the basketball.
After URI went 0 for 12 from 3-point range in the first half, allowing UMass to lead, 41-37, at halftime, senior playmaker Jimmy Baron (22 points) brought the Rams back with his beyond-the-arc shooting in the second half. Baron had four 3-pointers after intermission, with the third giving URI the 66-64 lead with 2:24 left.
Gaffney and Lowe (18 points, 7 assists) combined for three free throws to give UMass a 67-66 lead, but Baron nailed a 21-footer to put the Rams up by two with 1:24 left.
Lowe answered with a jumper to tie it, 69-69, and when URIs Delroy James tried a jumper of his own, Gaffney pulled down the rebound. At the other basket, Ulmer did what he could to block shots by Ricky Harris and Luke Bonner, but committed a foul that sent Bonner to the line.
Bonner hit one free throw give UMass a 70-69 lead but missed the second. Both teams knew the ball would be going to Baron, and UMass double-teamed him with Bonner and Gary Correia, forcing URI to call a timeout.
When play resumed, Marquis Jones had possession, and Bonner got his fifth foul to send Jones to the line, where Jones hit both shots for a 71-70 lead.
OUTH KINGSTOWN It was almost as if the URI basketball fans did not want to leave the Ryan Center Saturday. It was if they did not want to believe that Chris Lowe and his University of Massachusetts team could ruin what Rhody fans had planned as a Senior Day party.
Five minutes, even 10 minutes after Lowe had given the Minutemen a 72-71 triumph over the Rams on a driving layup with less than one second left, many in the sellout crowd of 7,707 were still in their seats.
They could not believe, did not want to believe, that URIs six-game winning streak was over. And, perhaps, so were the chances of an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament.
But Lowe did it. Again.
The senior guard from Mount Vernon, N.Y., has been a Rhody killer his entire career. He had 44 points and 16 assists in two victories over Rhode Island last season. But this one was his most damaging. He finished with 18 points and seven assists, and capped it with his spectacular game-winning play.
Marquis Jones had just made two foul shots, off a one-and-one situation, to put Rhode Island on top, 71-70, with 6.8 seconds left. URI called a time out to set up its defense. The winning play for the Minutemen was predictable and beautifully executed.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg made no pretense of any great strategy, other than making sure Lowe would get the ball.
"Put the ball in your senior point guards hands and tell him to go make a play. Its great coaching," Kellogg said.
URI went with fullcourt pressure on the inbounds play. Lamonte Ulmer was on Lowe. Lowe got the ball about 90 feet from the hoop, turned and began racing up the left sideline. He had some help. Kellogg had directed forward Matt Glass to set a screen for Lowe at halfcourt. Ulmer never saw Glass. He ran into him and crumbled to the floor.
"Im looking forward to seeing that on film," said Rhody coach Jim Baron. "He clobbered him."
The Rhody fans began screaming for a foul, even as Lowe kept racing on and Ulmer tumbled to the floor, where he remained for a minute or so. Lowe kept going straight to the hoop. Two URI players came over to challenge him, making it a tough shot. Lowe floated the ball high and off the glass and in with 0.6 seconds left.
"It was a great play. It wasnt for lack of hustle on their part," Kellogg said.
The win provided a sweet end to a disappointing regular season for the Minutemen. They are 12-17, 7-9 in the Atlantic 10 and will go to the A-10 tournament as the 10th seed, which puts them on the same side of the bracket with URI, setting up a possible rubber meeting between the teams Thursday.
URI finished 22-9 and 11-5, good numbers, but not likely good enough to earn an invitation to the big dance. The Rams likely need to at least make the A-10 final before they can begin thinking about the NCAA Tournament.
"Weve got to keep winning," Baron said. "You cant speculate. We have to take care of business."
Strangely, the result marked the fifth time in the last six years URI has lost on Senior Day. Rather than helping, the emotion of the day seemed to hurt the Rams.
"Its draining," Baron said.
His team fell behind by as many as eight, at 24-16. The Rams missed their first 12 3-point shots. Massachusetts, meanwhile, got great efforts off the bench from Glass (13 points, including three treys) and Providence native Gary Correia (a career high 12 points).
UMass led, 41-37, at the half. URI made numerous runs in the second half. It was frustrated by missed opportunities a number of times. The Rams finally took the lead, at 66-64, on a 3-pointer by Jimmy Baron with 2:20 left. Baron had four treys, becoming the all-time A-10 career and single-season URI record holder. He finished with 22 points.
After Massachusetts had gone ahead again at 67-65, Baron had another trey to make it 69-67 URI with 1:19 left. Lowe tied it on a drive with 1:06 remaining. Luke Bonner put the Minutemen ahead, 70-69, with a foul shot with 37 seconds left.
Jones, the hero in a win over Dayton in URIs last home game, made his two clutch foul shots to put the Rams back up by one, setting the stage for Lowe to break the hearts of Rhody fans with his outstanding play at the end.
OUTH KINGSTOWN Jimmy Baron did not feel like a record setter when his work was done Saturday.
URIs senior guard had just put his name firmly in both the Atlantic 10 and URI record books. He made four 3-point shots, all in the games last 15 minutes, on Senior Day at the Ryan Center.
That gave him 345 for his career, moving him ahead of La Salles Darnell Harris as the conference record holder. Harris had 342. The shots also gave Baron 102 for the season, breaking his own school record of 99. But he could not enjoy it because his team lost to Massachusetts, 72-71, on Chris Lowes last-second shot.
Perhaps showing the emotion of Senior Day in which he, Kahiem Seawright, Jason Francis and Olawale Alesh were honored in pre-game ceremonies, Baron and the entire URI team started slowly. Baron missed his first six 3-pointers. As shooters tend to do, he did not stop trying.
"There have been times when Ive missed my first 10 or 12 in a game. It happens. Youre not going to hit every shot," he said. "The thing is youve got to keep shooting."
* * *
Great shooting from another Rhode Islander was a key in the UMass victory.
Gary Correia, who began his high school career at Hope and finished at Northfield Mount Hermon, scored a career high 12 points. He was a perfect 4-for-4 behind the 3-point line.
"I was just in the flow of the game. I got a chance to shoot the ball. When the first one went down, I felt good," the junior guard said.
Correia came in averaging 1.9 points. Matt Glass, who was averaging 3.2, added 13 points. Between them, Correia and Glass were a combined 7-for-8 on 3-pointers. Having his big day against URI made it even more special for Correia.
"I know a lot of the guys on that team. I played AAU with them," he said.
Correia had a number of friends and family in the stands, but said he dedicated it to someone who was not able to attend.
"I dedicated this game to my grandfather (Joseph Correia). Hes been in the hospital with heart problems," Correia said.

"Baronville," the practice of having students come out overnight to be first in line for tickets, returned to the Ryan Center overnight.
The first tents were put up about 6 p.m. Friday. By sunrise on game day, there were about 10 tents and a picnic table set up. In all, several hundred students were in line by the time ticket windows opened at 9:50 a.m., 10 minutes earlier than planned.
Because all tickets available to the public were gone, all five ticket windows were opened for the students and nearly 2,000 tickets were quickly distributed. Gregg Burke, the deputy athletic director, supervised the process and came away with one unusual story.
"I went out before the opened the windows and explained what we were going to do. I told everyone there was no need to move all around," Burke said. "The next thing I know, one of the kids in the middle of the line comes out and starts telling everyone, 'This is what were going to do,' " Burke related. "He told everyone they should clean up the place. By the time they were done it looked like no one had been here. It was amazing. They were great."

In addition to the three scholarship players, Wale Alesh, a Providence native who has been with the team for the last two years, also was honored in the pregame ceremonies. More activities were held at halftime, including honoring Robert Carothers, the outgoing school president.
Kahiem Seawright had a season high 16 rebounds for URI, but was only 2-for-10 from the field and 2-for-6 from the foul line.
Delroy James had a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.
Freshman point guard Stevie Mejia had six assists and no turnovers.
Rhody finishes the season 12-2 at home, the losses coming by one point to UMass and two to Xavier.
