ARBONDALE, Ill. - From the first press conference to Klub Kellogg to last week's exhibition game, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team has had no shortage of "start to the Derek Kellogg era" events since the Springfield native was named head coach in April.
But the first one that actually counts is tonight when the Minutemen opens the season at 6 p.m. against Division II Arkansas-Monticello in the first round of the 2K Sports Classic, which benefits Coaches vs. Cancer.
California (Pa.), another Division II school, and host Southern Illinois play in tonight's other semifinal. The losers play in the consolation game at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, while the winners will play for the championship at 8 p.m.
Kellogg, a former UMass point guard, said he had some natural nervousness going into his first game as a head coach.
"Obviously you're going to have some first-game jitters," Kellogg said. "But it's kind of like being a player, once the game starts those will go away."
Two of Kellogg's former bosses - John Calipari and Bruiser Flint - also opened their UMass coaching careers against Division II foes. Calipari's Minutemen beat Southern Connecticut 84-61 at the Cage in 1988, while Flint's squad held off Chaminade 59-48 in Maui.
Normally opening against a Division II school allows a team to ease into its season, but the Boll Weevils could be a scary foe for the Minutemen. UMass is coming off a 91-87 exhibition win over a Division II Dowling team which finished under .500 last year.
That game "was a wake-up a call," Minuteman senior point guard Chris Lowe said. "We bounced back and responded very well. We worked on defense and rebounding and we're ready to get back on the floor."
Kellogg said he hopes his defense would show the most improvement.
"If you're going to pull away from a team and create a gap at some time, you're going to have to stop them on the defensive end of the floor," Kellogg said. "They're saying the right things and practicing the right way, but we'll see."
Arkansas-Monticello figures to be considerably better than Dowling. The Boll Weevils were 17-12 last year and they have a veteran roster with six seniors and four double-figure scorers returning. They received votes in the Division II top 25 poll.
Arkansas-Monticello also has more size than most Division II teams, including 6-foot-9 senior big man Raymond Wright who averaged 16 points and 9.4 rebounds last year.
Kellogg said UMass has not seen much tape on the Boll Weevils.
"It's been more word of mouth," Kellogg said.
The Minutemen installed their dribble-drive motion offense during the preseason. They spent considerable time working on zone offense after struggling against Dowling's zone at times Wednesday. Tonight will also be the regular-season playing debut for UMass freshmen Tyrell Lynch, David Gibbs and Travon Wilcher, as well as Anthony Gurley, who transferred from Wake Forest.
Gurley will start and will be counted on to be a consistent scorer both from 3-point range as well as driving to the basket. He will be part of a three-guard lineup alongside Lowe and Ricky Harris, who both started 33 games a year ago.
Gibbs and sophomore Gary Correia will both see plenty of minutes off the bench, while sophomore Matt Glass could earn playing time. Up front, UMass is counting on two seniors who were role players last season to become reliable contributors.
Luke Bonner, who was in and out of the Minuteman starting lineup last year, will start inside while also getting the chance to shoot 3-pointers.
Tony Gaffney, who was an energetic presence off the bench a year ago, will be asked to play a key role both in interior defense and rebounding.
The coaching staff is excited about Lynch, who could challenge for minutes as a starter if he continues to develop. Be he's expected to be limited by his stamina early after sitting out last season.
And Wilcher, who has not developed his game as much as Lynch, will likely get chances to play in a thin UMass frontcourt.
NOTES: UMass is 13-2 in its last 15 season openers.
The last five Minuteman coaches have each won their debut at UMass. The last coach to lose his first game with the Minutemen was Tom McLaughlin in 1981. Coincidentally, he was the last alumnus to coach UMass.

fter last week's narrow victory over Dowling on Nov. 5, the Massachusetts men's basketball team knows better than to take any game for granted.
However, the main difference between tonight's game against Arkansas-Monticello and the one against Dowling is that this game counts. The winner will go on to play the winner of Southern Illinois and California (Pa.) on Wednesday.
The season-opener is part of a 16-team tournament in the 2K Sports Classic, which has been one of the annual traditions in opening the college basketball season since 1996. The four regional hosts for this tournament are Duke, UCLA, Michigan and SIU.
The Boll Weevils (17-12 last season) play in Division II, but were more successful than the Golden Lions in a competitive conference. UAM received nine votes in the Division II Top 25 pre-season coaches' poll.
The Boll Weevils have a bit of experience against Division I teams, although they lost both games in blowouts to West Virginia and Texas. Even if they don't beat UMass (25-11, 10-6 Atlantic 10 last year), a loss in the single-digits would be just as good for them and a bad sign for the Minutemen, who struggled in their 91-87 win over Dowling.
UAM runs its offense with a three-guard system, but mainly rely on senior Raymond Wright (16 points per game) for the bulk of its scoring.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg will look for more out of center Luke Bonner, especially because he or redshirt senior Tony Gaffney will have to guard Wright. In the previous game against the Golden Lions, Bonner scored three points in 26 minutes.
If the game gets to be a blow-out, Kellogg will play some of his reserves, as they didn't get a chance to play against Dowling.
Another area that UMass is hoping to showcase tomorrow is its defense, which Kellogg has emphasized since the first day of practice. Statistically, that shouldn't be a problem as UAM averaged 71.3 points per game during the 2007-08 season, while the Minutemen averaged 81.5.
Kellogg hasn't made it much of a secret that he would like for his captain, Chris Lowe, to dominate the entire game as he did late in the second half against Dowling. Lowe got to the basket several times in the final two minutes and eventually ended the game with 21 points.
If UMass beats the Boll Weevils, the teams will get more difficult as the team is expected to rely on Lowe more throughout the tournament.
Game notes
The tournament officially started Monday night with Houston competing against Georgia Southern and the Blue Devils hosting Presbyterian. The Durham championship game will be tonight at 9 p.m.

ARBONDALE, Ill. - Behind double-doubles from seniors Chris Lowe and Tony Gaffney, the Minutemen kicked off a new era of UMass men's basketball with a 90-71 win over Arkansas-Monticiello in Derek Kellogg's head coaching debut on Tuesday evening. Lowe (18 points, 11 assists) finished just four assists shy of tying the school-record of 15 while Gaffney's double-double (16 points, 13 rebounds) was the first of his collegiate career. The final three minutes of the first half proved to be the difference as the Minutemen erased a two-point deficit with a 15-4 run to take a nine-point advantage heading into the locker room. With the win, the Minutemen advance to face the winner of California (Pa.) and host Southern Illinois in the regional final of the 2K Sports Classic on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, with a trip to Madison Square Garden on the line.
Junior Ricky Harris avenged a slow start to pour in 22 points, two rebounds, and three steals. He finished 7-of-19 from the floor and 5-of-9 from behind the three-point arc.
For the game, the Minutemen shot 46% (31-67) and 44% (12-27) from three-point range. Rebounds were even at 41-41, a number coming on the offensive end (18 for UMass and 19 for Arkansas-Monticiello).
After surviving a first-half scare, the Minutemen came out strong out of the locker room to seal the victory in the second. Arkansas-Monticiello wouldn't go away, pulling back within 11 at 67-56. Freshman David Gibbs responded with a three-pointer, the first collegiate points of his career, to make it 70-56.
Gaffney's alley-oop from freshman Tyrell Lynch was icing on the cake, making it 83-64 with three minutes remaining in the second half. The Minutemen would go on to open up two 21-point leads, their largest leads of the game, at 88-67 and 90-69.
UMass controlled play early in the first half, taking an 11-point advantage at 14-3 after senior Luke Bonner's three-pointer at the 16:06 mark. Arkansas-Monticiello hung tough, eventually taking a 33-31 advantage, but the Minutemen answered with a 13-0 run (and 15-4 to end the half), for the 47-38 halftime lead.
The Minutemen now look ahead to a date with either Southern Illinois or California (Pa.) on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET. The winner of the Southern Illinois region faces the winner of the Duke region in the 2K Sports Classic Semifinals held next Thursday, Nov. 20, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Derek Kellogg picked up his first win as a head coach. He is the sixth UMass coach in a row to win his debut.
Tony Gaffney had his first-career double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Chris Lowe had his fourth-career double-double with 18 points and 11 assists.
Gaffney had a career-high 13 rebounds, previous high was 12 at Duquesne last season.
Gaffney had his fourth-career game with 10 or more rebounds.
Gaffney had his fifth-career game with 10 or more points.
Chris Lowe had his seventh-career game with 10 or more assists.
Lowe had his 31st career game in double-figures.
Anthony Gurley had 14 in his UMass debut and 11th-career game in double-figures.
Tyrell Lynch made his college debut with four points, three rebounds and two assists.
Travon Wilcher hit his first college field goal attempt with a minute left.
UMass has won six season openers in a row and 14 of the last 16. The Minutemen stand 14-2 in the last 16.
ARBONDALE, Ill. - Tony Gaffney and Luke Bonner read the scouting reports on the University of Massachusetts in the preseason college basketball magazines and online.
The wording was different in each, but the idea was similar: Great guards, but questions in the frontcourt.
The duo helped answer some of those questions and gave Derek Kellogg his first win as a head coach with a 90-71 victory over Division II Arkansas-Monticello in the first round of the 2K Sports Classic.
"We know what we can do. When we hear that our frontcourt is weak, we know we played behind some great players, the past three years," said Gaffney, who registered his first career double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, both career highs. "No one has gotten a chance to see what we can really do. We're out to prove something."
Wearing a newly grown beard, Bonner led the Minutemen early before foul trouble limited him to 17 minutes. He finished with eight points, six rebounds and four fouls.
Kellogg was encouraged.
"Tony Gaffney played the way we need him to play if we're going to do anything special here," Kellogg said. "Luke Bonner had a stretch where he played well. He just got into foul trouble.
The Minutemen will play host Southern Illinois at 8 tonight for the right to advance to Madison Square Garden for the 2K Sports Classic semifinals. The Salukis defeated California (Pa.) 66-52 in Tuesday's second game.
"It was a good team win," Kellogg said. "It's good to learn from a win. We have some things we have to get better at."
Ricky Harris picked up where he left off last year with 22 points. Chris Lowe added 18 points and 11 assists. Anthony Gurley had 14 points in his first game for the Minutemen.
Senior big man Raymond Wright led the Boll Weevils with 25 points and 11 rebounds.
Bonner scored the Minutemen's first points of the season on a 3-pointer from the corner. The UMass lead hovered around nine for most of the first half until a 13-2 run gave Arkansas-Monticello a 33-31 lead with three minutes, 40 seconds left in the half.
Kellogg's first career time-out was effective as the Minutemen answered with a 13-0 run and coasted to a 46-37 halftime edge.
"That was one of the turning points in the game," Kellogg said. "It really gave us a boost."
Foul trouble for Bonner and freshman big man Tyrell Lynch forced Kellogg deep into his bench in the first half as every scholarship player except freshman Travon Wilcher played before intermission.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Ricky Harris early in the second half stretched the UMass lead to 61-46 with 14:37 left in the game. The Boll Weevils didn't get within single digits for the remainder of the game.
Wilcher's first career basket, a banked jumper from the free-throw line with just under two minutes briefly put the Minutemen up by 20 at 90-69, before a basket by Arkansas-Monticello created the final margin.
With his first career win officially in the record books, Kellogg was all smiles after the game.
"When guys respond and do what you ask them to do there's no better feeling. There's no more frustrating feeling when guys don't do what you're asking them," Kellogg said. "It feels great - at least for tonight."

t might have not been the most thrilling way to open the season, but Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg will take a 1-0 record any day.
The Minutemen (1-0) downed Arkansas-Monticello in the first round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, 90-71. After the Boll Weevils took a 33-31 lead with 3 minutes, 40 seconds to go in the first half, UMass put pressure on the defensive end and went on a 13-0 run.
"Defensively, I want to make sure our team is the hardest working one out there," redshirt senior Tony Gaffney said, who finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The Minutemen also saw an improved effort from point guard Chris Lowe (18 points, 11 assists). As a former point guard himself, Kellogg is expecting the team's success to ride on Lowe's performance throughout the season.
"How Chris Lowe goes is how our team is going to go," Kellogg said. "Our style of play is conducive to having a very good point guard."
Despite having a poor shooting night (7-for-19), junior Ricky Harris was on fire from 3-point territory (5-for-9), and finished with 22 points.
As a whole, the Minutemen had a great shooting night from beyond the arc, finishing with 11 baskets from beyond the arc. UMass was four 3-pointers away from tying its record for most 3-point field goals against Temple (1997) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (Nov. 17, 2007).
While the loss may be overwhelming for UAM, the Division II season doesn't start until Friday so the game only counts as an exhibition. The next game against California (Pa.) will count as an exhibition for both teams and will be played today at 11 a.m. in an empty SIU arena.
UMass' next opponent is Southern Illinois. The Salukis (1-0) don't have a roster that will impress anyone, but they have had a fair amount of success in the improved Missouri Valley Conference.
The most impressive win came against Drake, who qualified for the NCAA tournament as a fifth seed, 65-62, on Feb. 13 in Carbondale, Ill. The Salukis finished third in the MVC with an 11-7 record. Their success qualified them for the National Invitation Tournament, but lost in the second round to Arizona State, 65-51.
SIU is in a rebuilding year after losing its two leading scorers, Randal Falker and Matt Shaw to graduation and is a young team with six players who played their first game against the Vulcans. Five of those players are incoming freshmen while sophomore Justin Bocot is playing his first season after sitting out last year to catch up on his grades.
However, the Salukis expect to rely on guard Anthony Dillard and forward Anthony Booker to highlight the team's youth.
SIU's top newcomer is Tony Freeman who transferred from Iowa after averaging 13.8 points per game. However, Freeman will redshirt this season due to NCAA eligibility rules.
Their top returning player is point guard Bryan Mullins (10.7 ppg).
The Minutemen have had one prior meeting with SIU on Dec. 21, 1999. In their last meeting, the Salukies squeaked out a win against UMass, 65-63.
With a win against the Salukies, the Minutemen could find their way back to Madison Square Garden - a place they are very familiar with after last season's NIT run. The winner of this game will play No. 5 Duke on Nov. 20.
SIU is going to need a similar defensive game to its last meeting against UMass if it expects to advance in the tournament. Despite losing Gary Forbes to graduation, the Minutemen still have three strong scorers in Lowe, Ricky Harris and Anthony Gurley.
Regardless of what happens tonight, UMass' next game will be significantly tougher as Kellogg will return to the site of his former job against No. 12 Memphis to officially open up the college basketball season on Nov. 17.

ARBONDALE, Ill. - Last night's first-round game at the 2K Sports Classic provided first-year University of Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg a great opportunity for a nice conversation with his team.
The Minutemen saw a 9-point lead over Division 2 Arkansas-Monticello evaporate in a four-minute stretch of the first half. The Boll Weevils took a 2-point lead when Kellogg decided to have a little chat with the Minutemen.
"We called a timeout and had a nice discussion as a team over there," Kellogg said.
The Minutemen responded with a double-digit scoring run and never looked back in a 90-71 win, Kellogg's first as head coach at his alma mater.
Outside shooting was a key, as the Minutemen connected on 12 of 27 attempts from 3-point range. Guard Ricky Harris paced four Minutemen in double figures with 22 points and five 3-pointers. Senior point guard Chris Lowe, a preseason All-Atlantic 10 pick, added 18 points and 11 assists, though he had five turnovers.
"I thought our seniors responded real well," Kellogg said. "Chris Lowe was fantastic tonight. Other than the five turnovers, I thought he played a pretty good game."
Anthony Gurley rounded out the backcourt scoring with 14 points, and UMass's guard play nearly overshadowed a career night from senior forward Tony Gaffney. Gaffney had 16 points and 13 rebounds, both personal bests, and six of his rebounds came on the offensive glass.
"Tony Gaffney was probably our best or second-best player tonight," Kellogg said.
Gaffney said he and forward Luke Bonner (8 points) took it upon themselves to match the production of the Minuteman guards.
"We know our guards are phenomenal," Gaffney said, "but personally and amongst ourselves, we know what we can do."
Bonner missed most of the second half after picking up three fouls.
UMass led, 29-20, with seven minutes remaining in the first half before a 13-2 run by the Boll Weevils gave them a 32-31 lead.
Less than four minutes remained before halftime when Kellogg called a timeout. His message to his team was simple.
"I just thought it was time for the seniors to take over," he said. " 'This is your team.' When the other team makes a run, your seniors are the ones that have to step up and make plays."
Harris bookended a 3-pointer and a layup around Gaffney's 3-point play as UMass went ahead, 39-33. Lowe followed with a spinning layup and free throw. Gurley added a putback for an 11-point lead.
The Minutemen took a 46-37 lead into the locker room, having hit on 6 of 16 3-point attempts.
UMass cruised in the second half, shooting 53 percent from the floor while forcing six of Arkansas-Monticello's 16 turnovers. The Boll Weevils never got closer than 7.
"It was great to get our first 'W' on the season," Kellogg said. "We were a little concerned and nervous because all reports coming in were they were a good post team."
Arkansas-Monticello center Raymond Wright led all scorers with 25 points and added 11 rebounds. Only one other Arkansas-Monticello player reached double-figure scoring.
The win also kept alive a first-game streak for Minuteman coaches: The five coaches before Kellogg all won in their debuts.
UMass looks to advance to Madison Square Garden with a win over Southern Illinois in tonight's regional championship game.
ARBONDALE - The University of Massachusetts opened the 2K Sports Classic tournament with a 90-71 win over the University of Arkansas-Monticello's Boll Weevils.
As a result, the Minutemen play Southern Illinois University at 7 p.m. tonight at the SIU Arena. The winner of that game advances to Madison Square Garden in New York City for a likely meeting with Duke.
"It was great to get our first 'W' of the season," said first-year coach Derek Kellogg. "We were a little bit concerned and nervous coming in against Monticello because reports and word of mouth was they were a very good post-up team and rebounding team, two things we've had trouble with."
The Minutemen put the Boll Weevils away with a barrage of 3-pointers. UMass connected on 12-of -27 attempts from behind the arc. Ricky Harris was the primary marksman for the Minutemen, converting 5-of-9 3-pointers.
"If I'm open my teammates and my coaches have confidence in me," Harris said. "I feel as if I get a little bit of room or a little bit of space I can knock it down."
UMass also got a solid contribution from junior forward Tony Gaffney. The 6-foot-8 Gaffney scored 16 points and had 13 rebounds, including six offensive boards. Frontcourt play is one of the question marks facing the Minutemen this season.
"We know our guards are phenomenal," Gaffney said. "Personally, we know what we can do. All the preseason awards are great, but we don't mean anything. When we read our frontcourt is week, yeah, we played behind some great players the last three years, so no one has gotten a chance to see what we can do.
"We always take pride in our game. We're out to prove something."
The Boll Weevils appeared ready to make a game of things late in the first half.
After trailing by as many as a dozen points at the 9:34 mark, Arkansas-Monticello found its stride.
Using the strong inside presence of Raymond Wright and consecutive 3-pointers by Don Riley and Carlos West, the Boll Weevils closed to within 31-30. Arkansas-Monticello took the lead on Bernard Seymour's jump hook in the lane.
The lead grew to 33-31 on Antwain Cosey's free throw.
However, after a timeout the Minutemen returned with a renewed sense of urgency, scoring 13 straight points to claim a 44-33 advantage. Massachusetts led 46-37 at the half.
"I think that says a lot about our team, most young teams, new teams that are just starting to play together could have collapsed there," Gaffney said. "Guys still looked relaxed, no one panicked. Coach Kellogg looked at us and said, 'Isn't this great?' We took that and went on a nice little run."
"We called a timeout and had a nice discussion as a team and ran a play to get the ball inside to Tony Gaffney," Kellogg said. "He did a good job of sealing and catching and getting an and-one dunk. I felt like that was one of the turning points of the game and really gave us a boost."
Because of NCAA regulations involving the official beginning of the Division II season, Arkansas-Monticello and California, Pa. will play at 10 a.m. behind closed doors at the SIU Arena.
