UMass Athletics - recap
Daily Hampshire Gazette - recap
MHERST - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team might still be trying to find itself at 1-3, but that isn't stopping Wisconsin-Green Bay from promoting its game at 8 p.m. Saturday against the Minutemen as a memorable event for the Phoenix.
The headline on the school's athletic Web site is "Green Bay Men Host National Power UMass Saturday."
Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg, who has been a player and an assistant coach on teams that would live up to that hype, hopes to get UMass back to being a national power, but a step toward .500 this weekend would make him happy.
He believes playing better defense is the way to move in that direction. Frustrated with his team's performance on that end of the floor in Monday's 75-74 loss to Jacksonville State, Kellogg put his team through two tough practices Wednesday.
"We had a nice day of practice. We went at 6 a.m. for a couple hours and then went another hour-and-a-half (Wednesday) evening. I just wanted to get across that how we played is unacceptable. That's not what I expect on the defensive end of the floor," Kellogg said.
"We're not going to get much worse. Guys aren't playing with the energy and enthusiasm that I expect out of a team at this level of basketball," he added. "Right now I want them to play at a high level. Whether we wear down in the second half or we get tired, that's not a concern to me.
"I want to come out and play with energy, passion and intensity. I thought at times we did that. That's when we went on a run and put ourselves in position to win the game. You have to do that at this level for 40 minutes.
"The main thing is getting our guys in the right frame of mind to come together and compete," Kellogg continued. "If we get tired then I should use time-outs to get guys blows or go a little bit deeper into the bench."
Kellogg said his team's early struggles haven't shaken his faith in his approach.
"We're going to play the way I want to play," he said. "If we buy in, we have a chance to have a great year. If they don't buy in, it's going to be a tough year. We have guys sitting out and guys coming in.
"At some point we're going to have a great program," Kellogg added. "I think they're buying in, but I know they don't know how hard you have to play to compete at the highest level. Each day we're trying to get a little bit better and we made some great strides after the Jacksonville State game. Will that carry over to a win in the Wisconsin-Green Bay game? I don't know that.
"But I do know what I want my team to look like and it wasn't what I saw against Jacksonville State. Maybe I have to get a little tougher as a coach and rougher in practice and we've done that.
"We don't have the same personnel that we had last year. We can't just try to outscore people," he continued. "We missed 12 one-foot shots in the first half. The goal of this offense is to get one-foot-shots."
The Phoenix, who went 15-15 last season, are 2-2 so far. They lost their first two games - at Utah (79-60) and against Division II Rollins College (75-58) at the Glen Wilkes Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla. But Wisconsin-Green Bay bounced back to beat Marshall (72-66) and Morgan State (71-57) in the last two games at Daytona.
"I know Coach (Tod) Kowalczyk very well," Kellogg said. "They run a lot of sets and try to beat you up physically. They're a good ball club. They play tough man-to-man basketball with a little bit of zone mixed in.
"They have good players with 90 percent of their scoring coming back and 85 percent of their rebounding," he added. "They're more experienced than we are."
Mike Schachtner, who had 20 points and six rebounds against UMass last year, is averaging 11.5 points per game, but has 31 points in the two wins after 15 in the two losses. At 6-foot-9, he will step out and shoot 3-pointers.
"He's a good player. He's a tough matchup for us. He's going to be a tough cover for us," Kellogg said.
Junior forward Chop Tang, a junior college transfer, leads the Phoenix in scoring at 12.3 points per game and rebounding (6.3 per game).
The Minutemen defeated Wisconsin-Green bay 93-78 a year ago.
UMass senior big man Tony Gaffney said the Minutemen are anxious to play again.
"Guys were talking before our 6 a.m. practice about how we need to get back on the court to redeem ourselves," he said. "Everyone is disappointed in how we played.
"As a team we've met and we've talked," Gaffney added. "The season is young and we have a lot of work to do. We still believe the sky is the limit with our speed and our talent. Guys are extremely eager to get back on the court."

REEN BAY - UMass played with intensity and energy but turnovers proved to be a bug-a-boo all night long as the Minutemen fell at Green Bay, 84-67. UMass turned the ball over 29 times and the Phoenix had 35 points off turnovers in handing the Minutemen (1-4) their fourth loss in a row. UMass continues its tough road schedule to open the season at Toledo on Wednesday night. Green Bay is now 3-2.
The Minutemen were led by Ricky Harris, who scored 27 points. The nation's second-leading rebounder Tony Gaffney corralled 12 boards for UMass. Anthony Gurley added 11 for UMass.
Green Bay had five players score in double-figures led by Troy Cotton (21), Terry Evans (18), Mike Schachtner (14), Rahmon Fletcher (11) and Randy Berry (10) . The Phoenix made 12 3-point field goals nearly matching UMass' school-record 15 treys in the meeting between the schools last season.
The knockout punch came when Schachtner connected on a 4-point play which fouled Tyrell Lynch out of the game with 11:14 left in the game and gave Green Bay a 64-52 lead. The Phoenix's Cotton blasted a 3-pointer to finish off an 11-0 run and giving UWGB a 67-52 lead.
The Minutemen continued to battle, cutting the lead to four several times, but each time Green Bay came back to build its lead back to seven or eight points.
UMass cut back to within five points on a Gary Correia free throw with 16:07 left, 51-46. The Phoenix took a 10-point lead on a swooping lay-up by Fletcher with 16:59 left in the half, making it 51-41.
Green Bay came out blazing in the second half nailing back-to-back 3-pointers by Chop Tang and Cotton before a Fletcher steal and lay-up gave the Phoenix a 45-39 lead with only one minute elapsed in the second.
The Minutemen were hot from a the outside in the first half making 6-of-10 3-pointers and shooting 60 percent overall from the floor, but 15 turnovers kept Green Bay close as the Minutemen led 39-37 at intermission. Harris had a game-best 13 at the half.
After UMass took a its largest lead of the half at 10, 33-23 on a trio of Harris free throws with 6:09 left in the half, Green Bay went on a 9-0 run. It was finished by a Schachtner lay-up with 3:32 left in the half, making it 33-32. The Minutemen quickly responded on a 3-balls by Harris and Lowe giving UMass a 39-32 edge with 2:16 left.
Harris' trey and quick jumper on back-to-back plays gave UMass a 28-19 edge with 8:45 left in the half. UMass took a 23-17 lead with 9:23 left on Gurley's second 3-pointer of the half.
The game began with a frenetic pace with the Minutemen forcing tons of turnovers, but also turning the ball over themselves many times. UMass took a six-point lead on an Lowe driving full court lay-up with 11:14 left in the first half, giving the Minutemen an 18-12 lead. It was Lowe's third fastbreak lay-up in the first nine minutes of the game as he played with energy and intensity not seen yet this season.
UMass continues its run of starting the year with five of six games away from home as the Minutemen play at Toledo on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. The game will be the first at the newly-refurbished Savage Hall Arena in Ohio.
REEN BAY, Wis. - Through the first half Saturday night, it looked like the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team would give the kind of defensive effort that coach Derek Kellogg believed was lacking in the home-opening loss to Jacksonville State a week ago.
However, Saturday's second half did not go according to plan and the Minutemen could not recover from an eight-point run by Wisconsin-Green Bay to start the second half which gave the Phoenix the lead for good. They went on to win their home opener before 4,086 fans in an 84-67 rout of UMass, which committed a season-high 29 turnovers.
"It's amazing when you go back and work on defense in practice for two or three days, and not so much offense, that (the result is) 29 turnovers," Kellogg said.
The Minutemen (1-4) had their largest lead at 33-23 with six minutes, nine seconds left in the first half, but 15 turnovers allowed Green Bay (3-2) to close the deficit to 39-37 at halftime.
Beginning of the end
The Phoenix opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers by Chop Tang and Troy Cotton (team-high 21 points). Kellogg called a time-out after Green Bay point guard Rahmon Fletcher stole the ball from Chris Lowe for a layup.
Junior guard Ricky Harris, who finished with a game-high 27 points, hit a 3-pointer to slow the run. But UMass could not stop the Phoenix offense, which finished with five players in double figures.
Forward Mike Schachtner (14 points) gave Green Bay its first double-digit lead after nailing a 3-point shot as he was fouled. A Minuteman turnover allowed Fletcher (11 points) to hit another 3-pointer, giving the Phoenix a 67-52 lead. Green Bay led by as many as 21 with 3:01 left to play.
UMass struggled to stop forward Terry Evans (18 points) who was 6-of-7 shooting from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range.
The Phoenix shot eight-for-12 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Center Randy berry added 10 points for Green Bay.
The only Minuteman besides Harris in double figures was Anthony Gurley with 11. Tony Gaffney was the game's top rebounder with 12. It was the third loss in which UMass turned the ball over at least 20 times.
Harris said part of the Minutemen's problems have to do with learning the dribble-drive offense, which relies on quickly moving the ball around.
But Harris believes the team's main problem is carelessness.
"We've all been playing basketball for a while now," Harris said. "We know how to dribble and we know how to not travel with the basketball, so a lot of our turnovers were careless mistakes."
UMass will try to reduce those mistakes before 7 p.m. Wednesday, when it plays at Toledo.
