ookie head coaches never have it easy. The players aren't used to their schemes, the spotlight constantly follows them and the responsibility is far greater than ever.
Just ask Derek Kellogg or Gene Cross what it's like for a first year coach.
Tonight's matchup between the Massachusetts men's basketball team (1-4) and Toledo (1-5) pits two teams with first-year coaches looking to break out of an early season slump. UMass (under Kellogg) has dropped its last four games, most recently 84-67 against Green Bay. The Rockets (Cross) lost five out of their first six games with their only win coming against West Georgia.
The Minutemen will face a serious challenge tonight; Not only will they have to ignore their recent slump, they will also have to contend with an excited Toledo crowd, which will be inaugurating the newly renovated John Savage Arena against UMass. Toledo played its previous six games on the road.
The Minutemen are travel weary, having played four out of five games on the road this season prior to tonight's contest. UMass has never won in Toledo, although the team hasn't played there since 1979.
UMass has had one bright spot this season; the outstanding play of Tony Gaffney. Gaffney has averaged 13.2 rebounds per game this season good for third in the nation In addition, to averaging 5.0 blocks per game, good for fourth in the country. The figure includes his games against Memphis (Nov. 17) where he pulled down a career-high 19 boards and chipped in 16 points and against Jacksonville State (Nov. 24) where he scored 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked a career-best eight shots.
Gaffney has played at least 32 minutes in every game this season, more than he has ever played in his career. This is partially due to the Minutemen's lack of size in the frontcourt, but also a reflection of the dramatic improvement he has shown since last year when he averaged 3.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Although he has played well, he would like his numbers to come in Minutemen victories.
"Stats are nice but if your team isn't winning and the results aren't there, it doesn't mean a whole lot," Gaffney said.
Shooting guard Ricky Harris will be on to provide the bulk of the scoring. He leads the Minutemen with 19.8 points per game and had a game-high 27 points in UMass' loss to Green Bay.
His three point shooting has been very impressive this season, knocking down 46.2 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. He is 18-39 on the season so far. His shooting is not surprising to fans of the Minutemen. Harris tied a school record last year with 102 three point baskets in a single season.
Senior point guard Chris Lowe is the third player averaging double figures for the Minutemen. He has 12.6 points per game to go with 4.4 assists per game.
However, against Green Bay, UMass guard Anthony Gurley was the only player besides Harris to score in double figures.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Minutemen will have to focus on stopping Rockets guard Tyrone Kent who averages 18.2 points per game, third in the Mid-American Conference. He recently exploded for career high 37 points against No. 14 Xavier. It will be up to either point guard Chris Lowe or Harris to prevent Kent from getting penetration in the lane and lighting up UMass.
Toledo guard Jonathan Amos is the only other player on Toledo averaging double figures with 10.2 points per game.
Recently turnovers have been an issue for the Minutemen, causing Kellogg a lot of stress. Ball security will be a point of emphasis for the Minutemen tonight; Kellogg knows it's nearly impossible to win a game while turning the ball over more than 20 times, especially when they are silly errors.
One interesting subplot will be which team manages to control the boards. UMass outrebounds its opponents 39.6-36.6, but Toledo has gotten at least two more rebounds than its opponent in its last four games.
After facing Toledo, the Minutemen will return home to host Boston College Saturday.

he Massachusetts men's basketball team must hold onto the ball before they can get a hold of their new offense.
While learning a new offense has contributed to the large number of turnovers for UMass (1-4), the turnovers has also hindered the learning process. The Minutemen have stumbled in their last four games, dropping all four despite holding leads at half time in three of them.
UMass will need to reduce their turnovers dramatically tonight at Toledo if it wants to end its four-game losing streak.
Through the Minutemen's first five games, they have averaged 19.4 turnovers per game. The entire team has been at fault, with not one player having more assists than turnovers. Point guard Chris Lowe leads the team with 29 turnovers, 5.8 per game, and had 10 turnovers in the 80-73 loss to Southern Illinois. The senior has 22 assists on the season.
Redshirt sophomore Anthony Gurley (15) is second on the team in turnovers followed by Ricky Harris (14), Tony Gaffney (13), and Gary Correia (8).
"We've all been playing basketball for awhile now," Harris said after the loss to Green Bay. "We know how to dribble and we know how to not travel with the basketball so a lot of our turnovers were careless mistakes."
The team's turnovers have had a negative effect on the Minutemen in more than one way in the early part of the season. The first is the opposition ability to capitalize on the Minutemen's mistakes.
UMass has turned the ball over 97 times, and those turnovers have been converted into 116 points by the opposition. The Minutemen's opposition has averaged 1.2 points off of each UMass turnover, and an average of 23.2 points per game off of them.
The same cannot be said for UMass. The Minutemen have caused 67 turnovers and has not converted them at the same rate. They have scored 59 points off of their oppositions mistakes, .88 points per turnover.
The turnovers are also effecting the implementation of UMass' new offense. With so many turnovers, the Minutemen have had trouble at times running their offense and finding out what works and what does not.
The dribble-drive offense is something that takes time to install, on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. For UMass, the turnovers have slowed down the development of the offense and caused them to fall behind.
"It takes time to put a lot of things in, whether it is the defense, whether it is the offense," assistant coach Vance Walberg said before the team's home opener against Jacksonville State. "Right now we're so far behind on both sides of the ball. We're trying to get [the players] caught up to as much as we can."
As the season has gone on, the Minutemen have had more and more troubles handling the ball. On Saturday against Green Bay, UMass had 29 turnovers which resulted in 35 points for the Pheonix. Back on Nov. 17, in the 80-58 loss to No. 18 Memphis, the Minutemen committed 24 turnovers and scored 28 points off of them. Lastly against Southern Illinois, UMass gave the ball to the Salukis 20 times, good for 26 points.
Toledo's (1-5) numbers are similar to those of UMass in the turnover department. The Rockets have averaged slightly more turnovers per game with 19.5, but have forced 13.8 turnovers per game compared to UMass' 13.4.
The Rockets also have a poor turnover to assist ratio, averaging just .49 assists per turnover, .17 lower than UMass' .66 assists per turnovers.
The Minutemen are going through their second new offense in as many years just this season it is not going as well. Last season under Travis Ford and the up-tempo offense, UMass went 25-11, the fifth-most wins in school history, and started the season 5-1. With the Minutemen's struggles handling the ball, they have had trouble getting a handle on the new offense under new coach Derek Kellogg.

OLEDO, Ohio - Justin Anyijong's tip-in at the buzzer lifted Toledo to a win in their first game at the new Savage Arena, 57-56 on Wednesday night. In a match-up of first-year head coaches, each looking for their second win in their young careers, Derek Kellogg's Minutemen and Gene Cross' Rockets went back and forth all night, changing leads 10 times. UMass took the lead on two Tony Gaffney free throws with 16 seconds left, before Anyijong's buzzer-beating tip-in. UMass falls to 1-5 on the season, while Toledo goes to 2-5.
Senior Chris Lowe, playing his 100th career game, led the Minutemen with 15 points, four assists and four steals. Ricky Harris scored 13 points, while Gaffney added 11 points and nine boards.
Tyrone Kent and Jonathan Amos led the Rockets with 13 points each. Anthony Byrd added 11.
Gaffney calmly made two free throws with 16.4 seconds left to give UMass their first points in more than six minutes and a 56-55 lead, all of which followed a Gaffney steal that gave the Minutemen possession with 26 seconds left.
Gaffney forced Kent's driving attempt in the closing seconds to rattle out, but Anyijong was there to tip in the rebound at the buzzer.
The Minutemen looked to retake the lead but Anthony Gurley was called for a charge with just over two minutes left in regulation. Then with 1:27 Lowe was apparently tripped, but no call was made as he slid across the floor and was called for travelling. Lowe missed a runner in the lane with 32 seconds left then Tyrell Lynch was tied up and the possession arrow pointed towards the Rockets with 29 seconds left.
Toledo regained the lead at 55-54 on a Jonathan Amos lay-up with 3:20 left in regulation.
Toledo jumped out to a 12-5 lead early, capped by a 3-pointer by Kent with 14:44 left in the first.
UMass took its first lead of the game at 15-14 on a 3-pointer by Gary Correia with 9:39 left in the first. The 3-ball bounced high off the top of the backboard and down into the net. Tyrell Lynch then pumped in a putback lay-up to finish off a 12-2 UMass spurt and a 17-14 edge.
Toledo tied the game on a long jumper by Ian Salter with less than a minute left in the first half. Gaffney's 3-pointer with 4:53 left in the first increased UMass lead to five points at 25-20.
Lowe's runner in the lane as time expired gave the Minutemen a 32-31 halftime lead after the Rockets re-took the lead on a lay-up by Ridley Johnson with 11 seconds left in the half.
Kent's second 3-pointer in the first 10 minutes of the second half gave Toledo 47-42 edge with 10:13 left in the half. He had given the Rockets a 42-41 lead with 12:26 left in the second. That was the Rockets' first lead in close to eight minutes.
Down by six, UMass went on a 7-0 run finished by a Lowe steal and lay-up forcing Toledo to call timeout as the Minutemen regained the lead, 50-49 with 8:31 left in the second. That came on the heels of a show by Kent, who started to heat up in the second half as he scored 10 of Toledo's 12 points in a spurt finishing with a steal, fastbreak thunder dunk with 9:50 left in the second. That gave the Rockets a 49-43 lead.
UMass then went on a scoring drought of over six minutes late in the half that set the stage for what transpired in the final minute.
UMass finally returns home for a stretch of four of the next five at the friendly confines of the Mullins Center. The Minutemen host rival Boston College on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in a game that will be nationally-televised on CBS College Sports. The game will serve as the backdrop of Classic Era Night where UMass will honor its former players prior to 1960.
OLEDO, Ohio - For 39 minutes and 59 seconds Wednesday night, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team gave itself a chance to win on the road and pick up its first victory of the season against a Division I opponent.
But in that final second the University of Toledo's Justin Anyijong tipped a rebound into the basket as time expired to hang a 57-56 loss on the Minutemen in the first game at the newly renovated Savage Arena.
"It was very tough to lose that way," said Chris Lowe, who finished with a game-high 15 points and added four assists and four steals. "Very frustrating. We worked so hard to stay in the game, and we tried to do everything (coach Derek Kellogg) wants us to do.
"We just came out on the short end."
Ricky Harris added 13 points, while Tony Gaffney added 11 for UMass (1-5). The Minutemen's only win this season came against Division II Arkansas-Monticello Nov. 11 in the first round of the 2K Sports Classic.
Tyrone Kent and Jonathan Amos both had 13 to lead the Rockets (2-5).
Both offenses struggled late. After a basket by Harris gave UMass a 54-51 lead with 6:29 left, the Minutemen did not score until Gaffney sank a pair of free throws with 16.4 seconds to play. But those free throws gave UMass a 56-55 lead because Toledo scored just two baskets in that span.
But the Rockets had one possession left, and they made the most of it. With time winding down, Kent drove to the basket and missed a tough shot with less than two seconds to play.
But Anyijong managed to tip the ball into the basket before the horn sounded, and the near-sellout crowd of 7,252 stormed the court to celebrate.
"It was a great defensive play," Lowe said. "We knew they would put their best guy (Kent) one-on-one, and we put our best defensive guy (Gaffney) on him - and we forced him to take a tough shot.
"But we didn't get the rebound, and their big man tipped it in," he added. "We went mano-a-mano and made them take a tough shot. But it was a great tip-in."
Kellogg wasn't unhappy with his team's effort on that final possession - at least until the tip-in.
"We knew they would go one-on-one with their best player, Tyrone Kent," Kellogg said. "I thought we did a great job forcing him into taking a tough shot.
"We thought he would miss, and I told everyone to gang rebound. I guess we didn't gang rebound."
It was a thrilling ending to a contest that was both painful and entertaining to watch.
It was painful because UMass shot just 37.7 percent from the floor and committed 18 turnovers, while the Rockets shot 54.2 percent from the field but turned the ball over 20 times.
"It was the #Ugly Duckling' of games," Toledo coach Gene Cross admitted. "But it turned out to be a swan (for us) at the end."
But it also was entertaining, since neither team ever led by more than seven points, and there were 10 lead changes overall.
The Minutemen fell behind quickly, missing their first four shots and connecting on just 2-for-8 while committing three turnovers in the first five minutes as the Rockets led 12-5.
Then UMass got hot, making eight of its next 14 shots - including four 3-pointers.
A trey by Gary Correia that bounced off the rim, high off the backboard, and into the basket gave the Minutemen their first lead at 15-14 with 9:29 left.
From there the lead seesawed back and forth, with the Minutemen taking a 32-31 lead at halftime thanks to Lowe, whose jumper from the lane hung on the rim before falling in at the buzzer.
In the second half the lead again swayed back and forth, with UMass building a 41-37 lead with 14:19 to play. But the Rockets answered with a 10-2 run that included eight points by Kent and gave them a 47-43 lead with 10:26 left.
Both teams struggled to score in the final six minutes, setting the stage for Toledo's game-winning basket.
"This was one of the (harder efforts) our kids have played this year," Kellogg said.
"It hurts when you compete like we did and you lose the game.
"But I'm happy that our kids aren't happy right now."
After playing five of its first six games on the road, the Minutemen return home to host Boston College at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mullins Center.
OLEDO, Ohio - The Massachusetts men's basketball team suffered another last-second defeat last night in a 57-56 loss to Toledo.
The Minutemen (1-5) took the lead with 18 seconds remaining, but UT (2-5) scored on a tip-in after a missed shot as time expired.
UT took a 55-54 lead on a reverse layup by senior Jonathan Amos coming out of a timeout with 3:24 remaining.
The teams battled without a basket for the next three minutes. The Rockets forced a jump ball with 29 seconds remaining and quickly turned the ball over.
Senior forward Tony Gaffney was fouled with 18 seconds remaining and hit both free throws to give UMass a 56-55 lead.
The Minutemen had a foul to give and used it on guard Tyrone Kent with nine seconds remaining.
Kent took the ball on the inbound pass and drove to the hoop. He missed a layup with one second remaining, and sophomore forward Justin Anyijong tipped it at the buzzer for the 57-56 win. The student section erupted onto the court following the buzzer beater.
Senior Chris Lowe had a game-high 15 points with four steals for the Minutemen, while junior guard Ricky Harris had 13 points. Gaffney scored 11 points with eight rebounds, and freshman center Tyrell Lynch added a game-high nine rebounds.
The Minutemen forced a total of 20 turnovers in the game but committed 18 of their own.
The game was the opening of UT's recently renovated Savage Arena. The crowd was into the game early as the Rockets jumped out to an 8-2 lead. Anthony Gurley cut into the lead with a three-pointer to make it 8-5.
The Minutemen took a 15-14 lead with 9 minutes, 40 seconds remaining on a 3-pointer from Gary Correia that bounced off the top of the backboard before falling in. The Rockets tied the game at 29-29 on a jumper from freshman Ian Salter and took a 31-30 lead with 12 seconds remaining in the half on a layup by senior guard Ridley Johnson.
But Lowe gave UMass the lead back heading into the second half on a jumper at the buzzer to bring the score to 31-30.
The Rockets retook the lead at 42-41 with 12:33 remaining in the second half on a basket by Kent.
Kent scored 13 points for UT and had seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. He shot 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
The Rockets built a six-point lead before UMass fought back. Harris hit a 3-point basket to pull the Minutemen within one point. Gaffney then gave the Minutemen a 52-51 lead with 7:39 remaining with a dunk after a steal on the ensuing possession.
Amos scored 13 points with four rebounds and four assists.
Anyijong scored six points, had seven rebounds and took two key charges in the game.
The two teams tied with 28 rebounds each. UMass held a 12-6 advantage in offensive rebounds while the Rockets had a 22-16 advantage in defensive rebounds.
The Minutemen shot 9-of-10 from the free-throw line but made just 20-of-53 shots from the field. UT made 1-of-2 free throws and shot 26-of-48 from the field.
UMass hosts Boston College (6-2) at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Mullins Center.
