Hoop team going up against a tough Boston College squad
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 12/6/2008

AMHERST - Tony Gaffney and Anthony Gurley have different views about why Saturday night's game against Boston College at the Mullins Center is important, but both University of Massachusetts men's basketball players badly want a win.

Last year at Conte Forum, UMass ended an eight-game losing streak against the Eagles. At 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the Minutemen will try to snap a five-game losing streak against everybody.

Gaffney said despite the 1-5 start for UMass, the rivalry matters.

"It'll always matter. Anytime UMass and BC go at it, it means a little more. Personally growing up in Boston I know a lot of those guys," Gaffney said. "I hope guys come ready to compete and play hard. I think we're getting it."

Boston College offered Gurley a scholarship when he was starring at Newton North, which is a short ride from the Eagles' Chestnut Hill campus. But right now the proximity doesn't matter to him.

"We're just trying to get a win," said Gurley. "It's a big game, but our focus right now is just trying to get a win. Defensively we're getting better and becoming more of a team. I feel like once we get one win, the wins will just keep coming."

After being picked No. 11 in the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason poll, the Eagles are off to a solid start at 5-2. After opening the season with wins over Central Connecticut, Loyola and St. John's, BC dropped two straight to Purdue and Saint Louis, but bounced back with wins over Alabama-Birmingham and Iowa.

Senior guard Tyrese Rice continues to be one of the nation's hardest-to-guard players and is averaging 18.2 points and five assists per game. Vermont transfer Joe Trapani has been an asset right away, averaging 13.1 points and 6.0 rebounds.

The Eagles could try to wear the Minutemen's thin roster down as BC has gone 10 deep all season.

"It's an important game because they're an ACC team, two hours down the road," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "It's important that we play well. Right now where we are today I want us to play well and compete. I want us to continue to get better."

Kellogg believes the Minutemen did get better despite losing 57-56 at the buzzer Wednesday at Toledo.

"We tried to play within our game plan. Execution and some other things have to get better," Kellogg said. "The nine guys we traveled with were all fighting and scrapping together."

Kellogg said he is pleased with his players' attitude despite the Minutemen's tough start.

"It's a test of everybody's character. This is a time you have to step up and be a man and come every day and work," he said. "It's easier when you're 5-1 than when you're 1-5.

"This a test of the coach's character and the players' character," he added. "Our guys haven't wavered on being a team. They've been great to be around and have continued to work and improve. I haven't questioned their character at all."

Gaffney said the Minutemen need to focus on conference play.

"We're preparing for A-10 play right now. Guys are slowly starting to buy into it," he said. "We don't have any choice but to use it as preparation for the A-10. We've struggled a little and the season still is young. We are looking forward to A-10 play.

"We realize we have to get better every day," Kellogg continued. "We'd like to get a couple wins under our belt before then, starting Saturday. The main thing right now is getting better collectively."

CLASSIC ERA CELEBRATION - The game is the first of six recognizing different eras of UMass basketball as part of the school's season-long celebration. This game will honor players from 1899 to 1959.

Expected to attend are Don Akerson #58, Frank Barous #53, George Burke #56, John Edgar #57, Dick Eid #56, Wray Gunn #52, Paul Kollios #58, Ned Larkin #59, John MacLeod #54, Condon McDonough #59, Ed McGrath #43, George Morin #58, Alex Norskey #49, Bill Prevey #52, Bill Stephens #54 and William Walsh #40.

ALUM vs. ALUM - Boston College is coached by Al Skinner, who played at Umass from 1972 to 1974.

This is the first Minuteman game in which both coaches are UMass graduates since Dec. 3, 1981, when Boston University, coached by Rick Pitino, beat Tom McLaughlin and the Minutemen 91-65.

Eagles fly to UMass
UM to face Boston College on Saturday
By Adam Miller, Massachusetts Daily Collegian Staff, 12/5/2008

For three of its last five losses, the Massachusetts men's basketball team has seen what it's like to be surprised by teams it's heavily favored to beat.

Tomorrow, the Minutemen (1-5) hope to bring that feeling to Boston College in their first game at the Mullins Center since losing to Jacksonville State Nov. 24.

UMass is off to its worst start since the 2002-03 season, where the Minutemen lost five of its first six games before beating Florida International at home. A loss to the Eagles would be the first time they went 1-6 since the 2000-01 season.

UMass has had almost all its games on the road. In its previous game against Toledo, Justin Anyijong had a tip-in at the buzzer to beat the Minutemen, 57-56.

While UMass coach Derek Kellogg didn't get the offensive results he was looking for, he saw plenty of improvement from center Tyrell Lynch. The freshman finished with nine rebounds in 33 minutes.

"He could've had 15 [rebounds]," Kellogg said. "When he gets in playing shape and playing condition, that's what we're going to expect."

BC (5-2) will come into Amherst with two straight wins and plenty of confidence after finishing with a 4-12 conference record last season. Since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference during the 2005-06 season, the Eagles have otherwise held their own in a competitive basketball conference.

This year, BC is a lot more competitive and should give UMass problems with its size. While the Eagles aren't incredibly big and aren't deep in the frontcourt, but they're still bigger overall than the Minutemen, who have two active men above 6-foot-7.

"It's an important game because they're an ACC team and they're two hours down the road," Kellogg said.

Besides being close in proximity, Kellogg is simply looking for UMass to snap its five-game losing skid. He believes the team is starting to come together, but the Minutemen's short rotation will continue to test their character.

BC comes off a dramatic 57-55 win over Iowa after sustaining a 10-0 surge from the Hawkeyes with two minutes, nine seconds left to play.

The Eagles' main offensive weapon is point guard Tyrese Rice (who scored 15 against Iowa). The senior leads the team with 17.7 points per game and 4.8 assists.

For UMass, senior Chris Lowe should get the assignment for shutting down the catalyst to the Eagles' offense. Considering the point guard's recent struggles on both ends of the court, Lowe is looking forward to the challenge of stopping the sixth best scorer in the ACC.

"I guarded him for three years now, so I'm just going to play him man-up and give it all I've got," Lowe said of his defensive assignment.

The Minutemen are no strangers to facing the Eagles. The two teams have met 10 of the last 12 years with a total of 51 meetings in the "Battle of the Commonwealth."

BC has the all-time lead with a 23-18 record. In their last meeting, UMass won, 83-80, on the road Dec. 12, 2007. Prior to last year, the Eagles won eight straight meetings.

If the Minutemen hope to snap their five-game losing streak, they'll have to take better care of the basketball. UMass has the worst assist-to-turnover ratio (0.60) in the Atlantic 10.

Lowe believes the key to cutting down on turnovers will be giving his teammates easier passes to get better shots. In the game against the Rockets, Lowe had as many turnovers (four) as he did assists.

"I'm going to have to feed them like a little baby, just like how you feed a little newborn," Lowe said.

Game notes

Kellogg is looking for redshirt senior Luke Bonner to come back from his knee injury soon after the Dec. 13 against Kansas Prior to the injury, he averaged four points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

Harris' Career Night Not Enough As UMass Falls To BC In Overtime, 85-81
Ricky Harris pours in 35 as the Minutemen and Eagles traded leads 16 times in a seesaw affair
From UMass Athletics, 12/6/2008

AMHERST, Mass. - A career-high 35 points by Ricky Harris and a near triple-double by Tony Gaffney highlighted a gallant effort by UMass, but it wasn't enough, as the Minutemen fell to Boston College, 85-81, in overtime on Saturday night at the Mullins Center. UMass came back from five down with 23 seconds left to force overtime and the teams traded leads six times in the extra frame, but the Eagles were able to outscore the Minutemen, 6-1, in the final 1:02 of overtime. UMass falls to 1-6 on the season, while BC improves to 6-2.

Harris shattered his old career-high of 27 by shooting 12-for-19 from the field and 5-for-6 from the line. He added four rebounds and an assist. Gaffney nearly reached a triple-double with 15 points, 18 rebounds and nine blocks.

The two teams slugged it out in overtime, exchanging the lead six times, before BC took the lead for good on a Josh Southern jumper with 1:02 remaining. With the Eagles leading, 83-80, with 8.3 seconds left, Rakim Sanders missed two free throws. Lowe was fouled on the ensuing UMass possession, where he made one of two, cutting the BC lead to two, 83-81, with 3.9 seconds remaining.

The Eagles came out of the gates strong, making their first three shots and taking a 9-2 lead just over three minutes into the game. UMass came back with a 7-0 spurt to tie the game at nine, and after two-straight field goals by BC, Anthony Gurley scored five-straight points in a 8-0 UMass run to give the Minutemen a 17-13 lead with 11:06 left in the half.

The Minutemen took their biggest lead of the half after Gaffneydunked home the rebound of missed shots on two possessions in a row, making it 26-20 with 5:15 left, but a 7-0 BC run that followed erased that lead. The teams exchanged the lead four times in the final 2:28 before a Gaffney layup at the buzzer sent the Minutemen to the locker room ahead, 32-29.

Harris led all scorers in the first half with 12 points, while Gurley added nine and Gaffney eight, combining for all but three of UMass' points. Gaffney's four blocks and two steals led a defense that forced 10 Eagles turnovers and converted them into nine points. Corey Raji and Joe Trapani led BC in the first half with eight points each.

The teams battled back and forth throughout the first early portions of the second half. Just over three minutes in, two-straight hoops by Rakim Sanders gave the Eagles a 38-35 lead, but Harris struck back with a two and a 3-pointer to put the Minutemen back on top, 40-38, with 16:10 to go.

UMass led, 45-40, with 14:55 left when the Eagles went on a 9-0 run over the three minutes to take the lead, 49-45. The Minutemen used three 3-pointers, by Matt Glass and two by Harris, over a two minute span to take the lead back, 54-53, with 9:46 to play.

The Eagles followed that up by reeling off seven-straight points, giving them a 60-54 lead, their biggest since the opening minutes of the game.

Harris then put the Minutemen on his back, scoring five-straight points while securing a rebound and a block at the defensive end. A Gurley bucket at the 4:35 mark tied the game, 64-64, but a Raji basket 13 seconds later gave BC a lead they would keep until the final seconds.

BC led, 74-69, with seven seconds left when Lowe hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to pull UMass within two. Reggie Jackson missed the front end of a one-and-one after a UMass foul. Lowe took the outlet pass and flew up the court before being fouled as he entered the lane. After missing the front end of his one-and-one opportunity, Gaffney tipped in the rebound with 2.2 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

The Minutemen return to action on Wednesday when they host Holy Cross at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.

QUOTES

Senior Tony Gaffney on the loss
These losses are tough to swallow. We are clearly growing and guys are buying in to what the coaches are saying. We are going to learn from this and get better. I try to let the game come to me. Part of me feels like I let the team down. I was on the foul line with 20 seconds to go, I had two shots, and I missed them both. These stats and (Al Skinner's) comments are nice, but they don't mean a whole lot if you don't win.

Junior Ricky Harris on stepping up for Chris Lowe
Coaches have been telling me to be aggressive and stay positive because a lot of stuff hasn't been going our way. Today I saw that Chris was having a tough game and he started to look for me and get me the ball. Shots were going in for me. It is good, but it would have felt so much better if we could have gotten a win.

Tony Gaffney on the team's confidence
We know what we are capable of doing. Obviously, everyone is doubting us. We have stuck together this whole time and we know what we are capable of, and we knew that we would be in this at the end. I wouldn't say we are more confident now, we are just hungrier.

Anthony Gurley on his stamina
I just try to go out there and play the hardest I can, for the longest I can, every game. Tonight, we came up a little short. Going into overtime we were saying "this is winning time for us". We were ready to win the game.

Boston College Head Coach Al Skinner on Tony Gaffney
Anytime you get a guy to affect as many posessions as he did, whether it be blocks when we thought we had a scoring opportunity, that will affect your play. His energy on the floor was tremendous.I would think this was the best game of his career. For us to battle back and get a win, I'm very happy with that.

Coach Skinner on second half game plan
I think it is important for us to get the ball in the paint and be able to establish some scores around the basket. I always felt that you need an interior game, especially too win on the road. I think it creates fouling opportunities and I think it puts pressure on the other team. We are going to get the ball to the basket and look to attack on the interior. I think that is one of the strengths of this team, coming at the defense from a number of different angles that is who we are going to be.

Coach Skinner on the young team
The thing that most concerns me is the fact that we got hurried. Free throw shooting is going to come and go. Some days you make them, some days you don't, depending on who is on the line. I'm not overly concerned about that. I know who my free throw shooters are and I know who can make them. To me, that is a matter of time. As we get more comfortable, as the season goes along, we'll make them. You cannot lose your composure. I'm not saying we lost our composure, but we did not execute well. They were trying to push us. At that time I think we had a young team on the floor. We always have a young team on the floor, but I think we had two freshmen on the floor. Evan Ravenel was on the court and Reggie Jackson was too. They haven't seen that, whereas Rakim Sanders and Corey Raji saw that last year. They knew what to do. You need all five people to know what to do and execute well. When that young team was on the floor we struggled.

NOTES

Tony Gaffney nearly had the seventh triple-double in UMass history with 15 points, 18 rebounds and 9 blocked shots. The last triple-double came from Chris Lowe vs. La Salle (3/5/08) with 14 points, 10 rebounds, 14 assists. Stephane Lasme had an NCAA record-tying four triple-doubles in 2006-07. The first-ever UMass triple-double was achieved by current Boston College coach Al Skinner back on Dec. 28, 1973 against St. Peter's with 28 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists.

Ricky Harris scored a career-high 35 points. His previous high was 30 at Saint Joseph's (1/23/08). This was his second 30-point game.

Ricky Harris reached 20 points for the 22nd time in his career and fourth time this year with 35.

Harris broke double-figures for the sixth time in seven games this year and 44th time in his career.

Anthony Gurley had his fifth game in double-figures this season and 15th time in his career with a UMass-best 17.

Chris Lowe had 10 or more assists for the second time this season and eighth time in his career. He finished with 11.

Gaffney had two first-half dunks, giving him 12 for the season, he is the only UMass player to have a dunk this season.

Matt Glass drew his first charge of the season in the first half.

UMass magic runs out in OT
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 12/8/2008

AMHERST - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team played arguably its best game of the season Saturday night as some of its players put up career numbers against a traditional rival.

But when the clock ran out in overtime the Minutemen were on the short end again, falling 85-81 to Boston College before 6,792 fans at the Mullins Center.

For a moment it looked like UMass would exorcise a handful of demons in one game. The Minutemen erased a 74-69 deficit in the last 12 seconds of regulation, the same score they led by in their loss to Jacksonville State. They forced overtime on a tip-in, the same way they lost 57-56 at Toledo Wednesday.

But UMass (1-6) ran out of magic in overtime when it trailing 81-80 with 1:03 left. Tony Gaffney, who had a brilliant game with 15 points, 18 rebounds and nine blocked shots, finished his night on a sour note by missing two free throws.

"Part of me feels like I let the team down," Gaffney said. "I missed both of them. I could have given us the lead. The stats are nice, but they don't mean a whole lot if you don't win."

Chris Lowe quickly fouled Joe Trapani of Boston College (6-2), who had missed four free throws in the final minute of regulation and overtime. But Trapani made both to pull the Eagles ahead 83-80.

Ricky Harris, who scored a career-high 35 points, got a good look at a potential game-tying 3-pointer, but the shot rimmed out with nine seconds left.

"It was in the basket and rattled around and came out," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said.

Rakim Sanders then missed two free throws to keep the Minutemen alive. Boston College elected to quickly foul Harris rather than let UMass try a 3-pointer. Harris missed the first and made the second to get UMass within 83-81.

Tyrese Rice made both free throws at the other end to seal the win.

"One more hard-fought loss. Both teams played hard till the final buzzer," Kellogg said. "I think they're getting closer to realizing how hard you have to play to win basketball games.

"We're going to be in a lot of close basketball games," he added. "We have to continue to get better and find ways to win. They have to give everything they have every time they step on the floor or we're less than average. Tonight I thought they played to the final buzzer ... This was by far our best effort of the season."

The Eagles led 72-67 with 45 seconds left in the second half when Gaffney tipped in a miss by Gary Correia to cut the deficit to three.

Gaffney then fouled Trapani who made one of two. After Lowe had the ball stripped at midcourt, he fouled Trapani who made one of two again with 12 seconds left to increase the lead to 74-69.

Lowe hustled up the court and made a 3-pointer with eight seconds left and the Minutemen trailed 74-72.

Reggie Jackson was fouled and missed the front end of a one-and-one for Boston College. Gaffney grabbed the rebound dished it to Lowe who sprinted up the court and was fouled by Rice.

The senior point guard for UMass, who struggled shooting from all distances, missed the first of his one-and-one, but Gaffney tipped in the rebound to force overtime.

"He was everywhere," Kellogg said. "Have you ever seen the Tasmanian Devil? That's what he looks like out there. He'll block a shot, dunk a ball and go back and steal it ... I'm so happy and proud of that kid, it's not even funny."

Harris shot 12-for-19, including 6-for-11 from 3-point range.

"The coaches told me to stay aggressive. I saw that Chris was having a tough game and he started to look for me more," Harris said. "Coach tried to run some plays for me and shots were going in for me. It would feel so much better if we would have come out with the W."

Anthony Gurley added 17 points, his high for UMass. Lowe, who missed his first eight shots, had eight points, 11 assists and eight turnovers.

Rice led BC with 21 points and seven assists, while Corey Raji, Sanders and Trapani each had 16.

UMass hosts Holy Cross at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mullins Center.

"These losses are hard to swallow, but we're clearly growing," Gaffney said. "We're going to learn from this and get better."

Eagles coach and former Minuteman Al Skinner saluted the effort by UMass.

"I'm not sure they can play much better than they did tonight," he said. "I thought they played the way they wanted to play.

"I read where (Kellogg) said he wanted his team to show some character. I think they did more than that and almost came away with the win."

Minutemen continue struggling late in their games
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 12/8/2008

AMHERST - The swing from the first half to the second Saturday night wasn't as bad as it had been in some games, but it was significant enough to turn another halftime lead into a loss in overtime for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team.

Before Saturday's game, UMass had led at halftime in four of its five games by outscoring its opponents 215-197 before intermission.

But after that things have gone downhill on both ends of the floor as the Minutemen had been outscored 250-203.

Against Boston College Saturday at the Mullins Center, UMass led 32-29 at halftime and was outscored 45-42 in the second half and 11-7 in overtime.

Kellogg attributed some of the second-half problem this season to the combination of his team's poor depth and stamina and some to its defensive struggles at the far end of the floor when the players can't hear the coaching staff's instructions.

"I love having guys playing defense in front of our bench because those guys are still learning how we play defense at UMass," Kellogg said. "When it's in front of the bench we can help them through some things. When it's at the other end, it's on them a little bit.

"I'm trying to get them to communicate a little bit more," he added. ".. And in practice we can only go so long because we have only 10 guys running around. We can't run them for three hours. As our guys get healthy, we're going to continue to get better."

WORST START IN EIGHT YEARS - Now 1-6, the Minutemen matched their worst start since 2000-01 when UMass also opened 1-6 but rallied to finish the season 15-15. Before that, the Minutemen had a worse start in 1979-80 when they lost their first 16 games.

QUICK U-TURN - With the Minutemen trailing by five with under a minute left in regulation, many of the 6,792 fans at the Mullins Center headed for the exits. But the noise in the arena must have turned them around as the fans streamed back in between regulation and overtime.

LOWE UP AND DOWN - Chris Lowe's 11 assists give him 522 for his career, pushing him past Alex Eldridge (518) into third place on the all-time UMass list. Next up is Edgar Padilla at 597.

Lowe now has 37 assists this season, but his eight turnovers were his second worst total in the seven games. He has 41 turnovers on the season.

SERIES - BC's 85-81 win gave the Eagles a 24-18 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools. Coach Al Skinner, who played at UMass from 1972 to 1974, is now 11-22 against the Minutemen in his coaching career at Rhode Island and Boston College. He's 9-1 in his last 10 games.

FAMILIAR FACES - In addition to the 17 alumni from the classic era (1899-1959) who were honored at halftime as part of the season-long 100 Seasons Of UMass Basketball celebration, several former Minutemen were in attendance.

Etienne Brower and Nana Ampim, who both graduated last year, were in the stands.

Former Minuteman athletic director Bob Marcum also was at the game. Marcum, now the athletic director at Marshall, drove from Boston after watching his Thundering Herd beat Boston University 84-80.

NEXT UP - The Minutemen will try to break their six-game losing streak at 7 p.m. Wednesday when they host Holy Cross at the Mullins Center. The Crusaders are 3-6 after snapping their own six-game losing streak with a 69-63 win over Western Michigan Saturday.

BC keeps UMass on skids
By Marty Dobrow, Boston Globe Correspondent, 12/7/2008

AMHERST - Boston College's 85-81 overtime victory over the University of Massachusetts last night was a veritable Santa Claus of a college basketball game, with a sack full of gifts for all.

For the 6-2 Eagles, the game offered a young team an exciting road victory that was sealed by a pair of Tyrese Rice free throws with 3.2 seconds remaining. "It was really a team effort," said coach Al Skinner. "There was no one guy who won this."

For the 1-6 Minutemen, the game offered some definite signs of progress. Even in the face of a sixth straight loss - three coming in the closing seconds - first-year coach Derek Kellogg feels his team is turning the corner.

"There were a ton of good things out there this evening," said Kellogg. "I think they're getting closer to realizing how hard you have to play to win, that you have to do all the little things down the stretch to win basketball games."

And for the 6,792 fans at Mullins Center, the game offered entertaining basketball from start to finish. The game was close throughout with 10 ties and 16 lead changes. UMass led three times in overtime before BC took the lead for good (81-80) on a Josh Southern basket with 56 seconds left.

The Eagles were impressively balanced, with Rice leading the way with 21 points, 7 assists, and only 2 turnovers. A trio of BC players chipped in 16 points apiece: Corey Raji, Joe Trapani (12 rebounds), and Rakim Sanders. All of Sanders's points came after intermission.

UMass had a pair of stars, Ricky Harris and Tony Gaffney. Harris had a blazing hand with a career-high 35 points on 12-of-19 shooting, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range. Gaffney just missed a triple-double with 15 points, 18 rebounds, and 9 blocked shots.

"[Gaffney's] energy on the floor was tremendous," said Skinner, who recorded the first official triple-double in UMass history.

Kellogg called Gaffney's performance "one of the great games in UMass history."

"The kid was everywhere," he said.

With UMass trailing, 74-72, Gaffney gave the Minutemen life with a tip-in with 3.3 seconds left in regulation after Chris Lowe front-ended a one-and-one free throw attempt.

But in a season in which UMass has already had more than its share of frustration, Gaffney had a painful finish. With 33.5 seconds left in overtime and UMass trailing, 81-80, Gaffney missed a pair of free throws.

After Trapani hit a pair of foul shots to make it 83-80, UMass had another chance when Harris momentarily got clear, but his 3-point bid went in and out.

Sanders then missed two foul shots with 8.3 seconds left, but BC fouled Harris before he could get a shot off. He made just one of two free throws with 3.9 seconds to play, and then Rice finished things off with two from the line.

"These losses are hard to swallow, but we're clearly growing," said Gaffney. "We know what we're capable of doing."

UMass also got a solid effort from Anthony Gurley, who scored 17 points.

The Minutemen return to action Wednesday against Holy Cross in Amherst. That same night, BC hosts Bryant.
