MHERST - After last season's 107-100 win over Syracuse - the biggest win of the season at the time for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team - the Minutemen then stubbed their toes with a loss at Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis.
In addition to taking exams and practicing, the UMass players have spent a lot of this week accepting congratulations for their 61-60 win over Kansas Dec. 13, this year's version of that Syracuse victory. But the goal now is to avoid making Saturday's 4 p.m. game at the Mullins Center against Hofstra this year's version of IUPUI.
"I told them, #We played a great game against Kansas. We've had a couple days to revel in the victory,'" Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said. "But after Tuesday it became time to get back to work, focus on Hofstra and build our team to continue to get better."
At least on paper this Minuteman team at 3-6 isn't as good as the one which beat the Orange in 2007 to improve to 5-1, while the Pride at 8-1 have a better record than the Jaguars did then at 4-2.
"Kansas was a great win. But it's over with," senior point guard Chris Lowe said. "We know what happened last year with IUPUI. It's on me, Ricky (Harris) and Tony (Gaffney) to show the younger guys what it takes to win. We want to keep working hard to try to win every game."
The game will mark the return to the Minuteman lineup of senior center Luke Bonner. The 7-foot-1 big man practiced at full speed this week for the first time since the beginning of the season.
Kellogg planned on making Bonner the second big man off the bench following freshman Tyrell Lynch, who is coming off the best game of his young career.
"We'll see how the game is going and how the other guys are playing," Kellogg said. "They've earned themselves a chance to go out and prove themselves. Luke is going to have to work his way back into the rotation."
Bonner said he feels healthy.
"It feels really good. I still have to get back the timing of the game," Bonner said. "The team I'm coming back to is a lot different than three weeks ago. Hopefully we can build on that momentum."
The game figures to be a barometer for the Pride, whose only loss was 98-69 to Clemson in the first game of the season. Since then Hofstra has won eight straight, but none qualifies as a signature victory.
Sophomore Charles Jenkins leads Hofstra with 20.6 points and 4.6 assists per game, and is second on the Pride with 5.7 rebounds per game.
Jenkins is the captain despite being the youngest player on the team, a month short of his 20th birthday. He's 49 points ahead of the pace set by Antoine Agudio, Hofstra's all-time leading scorer, at this point in his career.
Junior forward Miklos Szabo leads the Pride in rebounding with 6.4 per game. He's the tallest starter at 6-foot-9, but Hofstra has size on the bench in 6-10 forwards Greg Washington (4.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game) and Dane Johnson (5.8 points and 5.7 rebounds).
Washington was a teammate of Minuteman guard Ricky Harris at The Winchendon School.
"They have to be coming in here feeling pretty confident," Kellogg said. "I'm anxious to see how we come back."
NOTES: UMass and Hofstra have not played since Dec. 21, 1971, when Quinis Brower, father of former Minuteman Etienne Brower, played for the then-Dutchmen who won that game 60-56. The Minutemen won the only other meeting between the schools a year earlier.
Saturday's game is the second of a doubleheader at the Mullins Center. The UMass women play Northeastern at 2 p.m.

MHERST, Mass. - Behind an offensive explosion, UMass basketball cruised to its third-straight victory by defeating Hofstra, 97-81, on a snowy Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center. Anthony Gurley led the onslaught with 5-for-7 shooting from 3-point range on his way to 19 points. The Minutemen tied a school-record with 15 3-point field goals as they just missed recording the fourth 100-point game in Mullins Center history. Ricky Harris scored 16 points, eclipsing the 1,000-point mark for his career, while Luke Bonner and David Gibbs had career-highs of 15 and 11, respectively. Chris Lowe tallied 10 assists in the game to go along with his eight points.
While the Minutemen shot 57.7 percent from 3-point range and 52.5 percent overall, Hofstra had a huge advantage on the boards, outrebounding UMass, 61-32. The Pride was led by Cornelius Vines' 21 points.
The Minutemen jumped out to an 11-4 lead just under five minutes into the game, thanks to four-straight points by Harris. That lead increased to 18-8 at the 11:56 mark when Bonner, seeing his first action since injuring his knee in the second game of the season, hit a 3-pointer and followed that up with a tip-in off a missed shot on the next possession.
UMass received three points on three-straight trips up the court on 3-pointers by Harris and Gibbs, and three free throws by Harris after he was followed on another attempt from behind the arc, making it a 28-10 game with 9:13 left in the half. It was with the third free throw that the junior guard eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career.
The Pride cut into the UMass lead when Vines led an 8-1 run that made it 35-25 with 4:19 remaining in the first half, but the Minutemen responded by outscoring Hofstra, 13-7 over the duration of the half to take a 48-32 lead into the locker room.
Harris and Bonner led the way in the opening 20 minutes with 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Tony Gaffney sat the final 13 minutes of the half after picking up his second foul. Vines led all scorers in the half with 18 points, 12 of which came on 3-pointers. UMass shot 50 percent (7-for-14) from behind the arc in the first half, while Hofstra held a 32-17 advantage in rebounding.
After Vines started the second half off with a 3-pointer for the Pride, the Minutemen, led by two threes from Matt Glass and capped off by a Gaffney dunk on the break, went on a 13-2 run over a 2:13 span to open up a 24 points lead, 61-37, with 16:19 remaining.
The Minutemen's lead reached 26, 79-53, on a Bonner 3-pointer from the deep wing with 10:51 left in the game.
The Pride closed the game on a 16-5 over the final 4:45 of the game as Derek Kellogg emptied his bench.
UMass returns to action next Saturday, Dec. 27, when it hosts IUPUI in a non-conference game at the Mullins Center with tipoff slated for 4 p.m.
Head Coach Derek Kellogg's general thoughts
"David Gibbs has come out of his shell more and more everyday. I've been saying all week during practice that this is the best week he has had. Taking that three against Kansas really catapulted him, and he's starting to look like a major college player. That aside, tonight's game was great and I thought we played with an incredible amount of intensity in the first half. Defensively, we pressured the ball the way that I want to. We didn't exactly rebound, but we made them take some tough shots and turn the ball over.
"Luke Bonner gives us a huge addition. He clogs the lane defensively. He took more charges in the first half than we took in the entire time that he was out. It was great to have him back, and I thought, as an overall team effort, that was as good as we have had all year. Going 15-26 from the three is an added bonus. There are some things we can get better at- rebounding, free throw rebounding, which was atrocious tonight, and the way we finished off the game. If you are a guy that is coming off the bench, wanting to prove to the coach that you should get more playing time, than you should finish off the game."
Coach Kellogg on Luke Bonner's performance
"I expect that every night from him. I have seen him in practice where he plays like he is seven feet tall. I know there has been talk about him not being tough. I disagree. I think is a little bit mean and he can get in there and be tough and physical. Nine rebounds is probably more than I expected. I expect him to give us a presence, whatever that means. The way the game was played tonight, he had the opportunity to grab a lot of missed shots."
Kellogg on the past week:
"I let them walk around last Monday and Tuesday, thinking they were, I don't know, 'the bomb,' In practice, though, I thought we had a great week. They had high intensity and energy."
Ricky Harris on the win
"I'm glad that we didn't come out here too high. Sometimes, when you get big wins, you get too excited and then lose. It just shows our team how humble we are. We are out here trying to get wins."
Luke Bonner on his game and his connection with Coach Kellogg:
"I don't know if I expected that kind of game. I've been shooting the ball ridiculously all week. I relate to Coach Kellogg really well, and he's instilled a lot of confidence in me. I appreciate that, and it's worked out really well so far."
Bonner on being called "mean" by Coach Kellogg:
"I take that as a compliment. When you get between the lines, you play as hard as you can. You're an animal. You do whatever you can to win the game, within the rules. Then you step off the court with a level of class and humility. I like that Coach recognizes that, that he doesn't take kindness off the court for weakness."
Bonner on taking four charges in the game:
Charge-taking I'm pretty sure was invented in New Hampshire. If you go watch a New Hampshire high school game, you'll see like 1,000 charges. I feel it's a level of toughness to step in there and take one. And it's so demoralizing for the other team. That's probably my favorite play in basketball."
Hofstra Coach Tom Pecora on the loss:
"You can make all the excuses you want about a long trip or finals, but that's not what we're about. We had early turnovers and the ball was going through hands ... We weren't sharp.
"This loss goes beyond learning. I don't believe in learning from a loss. We need to be locked in every time we play. ... "This is a game that will get us locked in for the next one. Trust me, I don't know if we'll win or lose, but I'll get them focused for Iona."
Pecora on UMass:
"I think that win last week empowered them. Some teams have a big win, and they come in flat the next game. They defended with even more energy than they had earlier this season, though. That's the sign of a good team."
UMass tied the school record for 3-pointer made in a game with 15 (or more). The Minutemen also made 15 against Green Bay (2007) and set vs. Temple (1997).
Ricky Harris became the 40th UMass player to score 1,000 career points as he made three free throws at 9:50 left in the first half. Harris scored 11 in the game's first 10:10.
Harris reached double-figures for the ninth time in 10 games this season with 16.
In his return to action from a knee injury, Luke Bonner had a career-high 15 points for his fourth-career game with 10 or more points.
Bonner nailed a 3-pointer on his first shot attempt after returning from a knee injury.
Bonner drew a career-high four offensive fouls in the game. He drew charges on consecutive Hofstra possessions late in the first half.
Bonner had a career-high nine rebounds. His previous best was seven set several times.
Anthony Gurley reached double-figures for the sixth time in 10 games this season with a UMass-high 19 points.
Gary Correia made his second 3-pointer of the season after starting 1-of-11. He hit another to equal his career-best of two set in his second college game against Northern Illinois (11/10/07).
Freshman David Gibbs scored a career-high 11 points and made two 3-pointers for the second time in his career, he also hit a pair in the home opener against Jacksonville State.
Chris Lowe had 10 assists for the fourth game this season with double-figure assists and 10th career game 10 or more assists.
Matt Glass had a drawn charge as UMass had five overall.
UMass had its largest lead of the season in the second half on several occasions. The previous high was +21 against Arkansas-Monticello (90-69) in the season opener.
UMass had its largest halftime lead of the year at +16 (48-32). The previous highest was +11 in the first two games of the season (Arkansas-Monticello and Southern Illinois).
Hofstra had 61 rebounds, the most by a UMass opponent since UMass allowed 70 to West Virginia in 1989.
MHERST - It seemed like University of Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg might be overselling the potential value of Luke Bonner's return from a knee injury before Saturday's game against Hofstra.

But Bonner lived up to Kellogg's billing with 15 points and nine rebounds as the Minutemen crushed Hofstra 97-81.
"It was my first game back and I was really excited about it," Bonner said. "This can be a really tough game, the one right before the Christmas break. A lot of really good teams can play really tight... We didn't come out flat and had a really good time playing basketball."
Bonner had three of the Minutemen's 15 3-pointers that tied a school record.
Bonner, who was hurt in the season's second game against Southern Illinois on Nov. 12, checked in to warm applause from the crowd of 3,475 at the Mullins Center with 13 minutes, 31 seconds left in the first half. Forty-two seconds later, he drained a 3-pointer taken two steps behind the line. Before the shot even left the basket, Bonner was backpedaling to play defense where he stepped in and took a charge from Dane Johnson.
It was the first of four charges Bonner took in the game.
"I think charge-taking was invented in New Hampshire," said the Concord, N.H., native who is quite proud of his Granite State roots. "If you go watch a New Hampshire high school basketball game you'll see a thousand charges. I feel like its a level of toughness to step in there and take one. That's probably my favorite play in basketball."
Kellogg was impressed.
"He took more charges tonight than we did as a team the entire time that he was out," Kellogg said. "It was great to have him back. I expect that every night from him.
"I know there has been talk about him not being tough and physical, Kellogg added. "I disagree. I think he is a little bit mean and he can get in there and be tough and physical. Nine rebounds is probably more than I expected. I expect him to give us a presence, whatever that means."
Bonner was proud of the praise.
"When you get between the lines you're an animal. you do whatever you can to win the game within the rules and you step off the court with a level of class and humility," Bonner said. "I like that coach recognizes that and doesn't take the kindness off the court for weakness."
UMass (4-6) was in control throughout as Gary Correia's 3-pointer 4:13 into the game, which gave the Minutemen a 7-4 lead, was the shot that put them ahead for good.
They stretched their edge to 48-32 at halftime, their largest intermission lead this season. The margin reached 28 in the second half as the Pride (8-2) never threatened.
UMass won despite foul trouble for Tony Gaffney and Chris Lowe. Gaffney played just 15 minutes and had eight points, four rebounds and two blocks before fouling out. Lowe had eight points, 10 assists and two turnovers in 24 minutes.
Anthony Gurley led UMass with 19 points, including 5-for-7 from behind the 3-point line. Ricky Harris added 16 for the Minutemen, including his 1,000th career point, and David Gibbs cracked double figures for the first time in his career with 11.
Cornelius Vines led Hofstra with 21 points while Miklos Szabo added 10 points and 17 rebounds.
UMass is off for a week until it hosts Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis at 4 p.m. next Saturday at the Mullins Center.

The Minutemen shot 15-for-26 from behind the arc, matching their total against Temple in 1997 and Wisconsin-Green Bay last year.
Anthony Gurley had five of the 15 on seven attempts, Luke Bonner made three, Gary Correia, Matt Glass and David Gibbs each added two and Ricky Harris scored the other.
"Going 15-for-26 from 3(-point range) was an added bonus," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "That's probably not going to happen every night."
The 3-point shooting masked the Minutemen's rebounding woes as Hofstra outrebounded them 61-32. It was the most rebounds by an opponent since West Virginia had 70 in 1989. The Pride actually had more offensive rebounds (36) than the total for UMass.
UMass had a chance to break the Mullins Center points record of 102 as it reached 81 with just under 10 minutes left, but Kellogg used his reserves late which kept the scoring under three digits.
HARRIS 1,000 - Needing 11 points to become the 40th Minuteman to join the 1,000 career-point club, Harris didn't wait long to achieve the mark. He hit a 3-pointer with 10:11 left in the first half to reach eight points in the game, and on the next Minuteman possession Harris was fouled by Tony Dennison while attempting another 3. Harris made all three free throws to reach the milestone.
"This is great. To put my name in some elite company and to win the game, this is great," Harris said. "We played hard and it feels great to be rewarded."
GIBBS DUNKS - For the first 9 games this season, Tony Gaffney had been the only Minutemen to dunk. He'd finished alley-oops, dunked back missed shots and slammed in transition. Gaffney had 14 dunks, while no other Minuteman had thrown one down until freshman David Gibbs made a one-handed acrobatic dunk while being fouled with 11:30 left in the game.
