MHERST - The first semester is over. So are finals, Christmas and Luke Bonner's recovery from a November knee injury.
The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team has the most complete roster it will have for the rest of the 2008-09 season and almost a month to focus on nothing but basketball as the Minutemen try to build on their three-game winning streak.
"We had two days off to see family, but now it's time to get back down to business," Minuteman guard Ricky Harris said. "We can't wait to get back."
Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis, better known in college basketball circles by its palindromic vowel-loaded acronym IUPUI, is next for the Minutemen, Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
The Jaguars are no stranger to UMass. IUPUI upset the Minutemen, 89-77, in Indianapolis last year, derailing any momentum UMass gained from their first win over Syracuse. In that game George Hill scored 26 of his 30 points in the second half, while Jon Avery had 20 of his 25 after intermission as IUPUI erased an 11-point halftime deficit.
"We came in thinking it was going to be easy because we had just beaten Syracuse," Harris said. "They came in and beat us, surprised us."
Even without Hill, who left school early and is currently in the San Antonio Spurs backcourt, the Jaguars are still dangerous. They're 7-4, (4-4 against Division I opponents), and nearly knocked off No. 20 Arizona State on Dec. 14.
The Jaguars led 34-18 at halftime and held Sun Devil standout James Harden to a season-low nine points, but they couldn't hold on as ASU prevailed 59-58 in overtime.
Seton Hall wasn't as fortunate. IUPUI sophomore Leroy Nobles hit the game-winner as time expired to give the Jaguars their first win over a Big East opponent, 67-65, Saturday.
IUPUI then beat Indiana State Tuesday before breaking for Christmas.
Minuteman senior Tony Gaffney is convinced.
"We know they're a good team," Gaffney said. "They beat Seton Hall. They took Arizona State to overtime. Clearly they can play with anyone."
Freshman Alex Young has helped offset Hill's departure. The 6-foot-5 wing is averaging 15.0 points per game. Junior college transfer Robert Glenn has made an impact immediately as well with 10.6 points per game. Junior forward Billy Pettiford leads IUPUI in rebounding (6.6 per game).
UMass coach Derek Kellogg was still in Memphis when the Minutemen fell to the Jaguars last year. He's focusing on keeping his team's improvement going. During UMass' November struggles, Kellogg stressed that the team's goal was to come together and be playing well in time for Atlantic 10 play. With a healthy team on a three-game winning streak, his team is a little ahead of schedule.
"We've had really good scrimmages now. Both teams are really competitive now," Kellogg said. "This is an opportunity for us to get better as a team on and off the court."

MHERST, Mass. - Behind a 23-point performance from Ricky Harris, a double-double from Tony Gaffney, and 10 assists from Chris Lowe, UMass men's basketball defeated IUPUI, 64-57, on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center. The win was Derek Kellogg's Minutemen's fourth-straight as they improve to 5-6. The Jaguars, led by Alex Young's 19 points, fell to 7-5 with the loss.
Harris was 5-for-8 from 3-point range as he logged his sixth 20-point game of the season. Gaffney finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks, and three steals for his sixth double-double of the year. Lowe's double-digit assist day was his third in the last four games.
After IUPUI scored the game's first hoop, the Minutemen scored eight-straight points, including a nifty reverse layup by Gaffney for a three-point play off a feed from Matt Glass, who finished with a season-high nine points.
UMass kept the lead until Young scored six points in an 11-2 Jaguars run that tied the game, 18-18, with 7:54 left in the half. The freshman tallied 11 of IUPUI's 18 points to that point.
A Glass 3-pointer quickly gave the Minutemen the lead back and started a 7-2 spurt that gave them a 25-20 lead with 5:50 left in the half. The Jags countered with 7-0 run that gave them their first lead since 2-0, 27-25, with 2:35 remaining. The teams would trade the lead back and forth three more times in the final two minutes of the half. Harris sent the Minutemen into the locker room with a 34-31 lead by hitting a 3-pointer from 30 feet as the shot clock expired with six seconds left.
Harris led UMass in the first half with 11 points, while Glass added nine and Lowe dished out six assists. Young paced the Jags with 15 first half points. The Minutemen were 7-for-13 from 3-point range over the first 20 minutes, while IUPUI was 3-for-8.
UMass came out firing to start the second half, going on a 10-3 run over the first three minutes. Harris hit two 3-pointers and Gaffney added two dunks, the first coming off the rebound of a missed shot after he blocked a Young shot at the other end, and the second coming off a Harris lob from almost halfcourt. That gave UMass its biggest lead of the game, 44-34.
IUPUI reeled off nine-straight points over a 1:50 span to cut the UMass lead to one, 44-43, with 15:03 to go.
The Minutemen slowly rebuilt their lead, thanks to defensive play that held the Jags without a field goal for an 8:55 span between the 13:47 and 4:52 marks. A Harris layup off a long lead pass from Lowe put UMass on top, 58-51, with 5:35 remaining.
The Jags cut the UMass lead to three with under a minute left, but a Lowe driving layup with 14 seconds left and two free throws from Gaffney with four seconds left secured the victory, 64-57.
The Minutemen return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Houston to take on the Cougars at 2 p.m. ET in the final non-conference road game of the season.
Head Coach Derek Kellogg's general comments
I thought IUPUI did a great job this afternoon. That match-up zone was pretty tough to penetrate. Especially in the first half, we had too many guys up high against their zone that didn't do a great job of getting into the paint. In the second half, we made a small adjustment and had one ball screener who was diving which gave us a little bit more of an opportunity to penetrate a little more and get the ball into the middle of the paint. To beat a zone, you have to try to get it into the paint at some point. In the second half, we finally did that. We had some great open looks, and that is why we shot such a high percentage. The thing I was most proud of was holding a team to 57 points and holding them without a field goal for nine minutes. For us to be able to win ugly, that is what we are shooting for, to win pretty or win ugly. It was a good win for our guys, coming off the break, where we only practiced for two days. We may have been a little winded and not really clicking or in sync. We missed some easy layups and easy balls. In hind sight, I would rather have the win.
Coach Kellogg on end of game
If you are trying to milk the clock at the end of the game, you are obviously trying to run the clock and then score the ball. The worst thing you can do is run the clock done, not score, and then a tip. At least the ball went out of bounds so that we could set up our defense. As a coach, you just want to win the game.
Ricky Harris on defense
I think we played really hard on the defensive end. Coaches have been riding on us defense, and its starting to make us look better as a team. Our defense is playing harder and we're starting to get steals and that leads to transition points, which is good for us. It is helping us to not have to run so many sets on offense. We are going to play defense because it has really helped us and brought us a lot of energy. Now we are starting to get some wins, and I think it has a lot to do with our defense.
Harris on complete game
I like to see the ball go through the net, as all good shooters and scorers. But, Tony Gaffney and Chris Lowe are always telling me before the game, `Shorty, don't press, don't press. It is going to come.' I like to focus on the defensive end of the game, because the defense leads to offense. Now, I am starting to really buy into that, because it is true. You get a couple rebounds, and a few steals, that makes your shot a little easier. My sophomore year, or my freshman year, I would have come out and just started jacking them up right off the bat. I'm trying to really buy into this system because it leads to good offense.
Harris on change in game this year
Coach Kellogg is always telling me to rebound and play defense like you are a nationally known player. I'm feeding into that because I want to be a nationally known player, and we're getting wins. That is what I have to do. Coach Ford preached defense, but Coach Kellogg lives and dies on the defensive end. If you don't play defense, you're not getting into the game, and I want to be in the game late, so I'm going to play defense.
Chris Lowe on this year's defense
Coach Ford preached defense, but Coach Kellogg is always saying that at Memphis, everyone talked about their offense, but it was really their defense that got them to the National Championship. He said that last year, if we had played a little more defense, with the philosophy he had, we would have been in the tournament and made a deep run. We have a great team. It took us a long time to buy into this philosophy of playing both ends of the court. Now we are starting to buy into it and reap the benefits and the rewards.
IUPUI Head Coach Ron Hunter's general comments
I give all the credit to UMass. They played well and their pressure bothered us a little bit. My team played mentally fatigued, and what I mean by that is that the last three weeks, we have been on the road traveling. We've played tight games, whether it be against Arizona State or Seton Hall, we are playing up a level every weekend. I thought this game we did not play very smart. The kids played hard and I thought it was a very competitive basketball game. I thought UMass was more controlled today.
Coach Hunter on defensive effort
We play a match-up on defense for 40 minutes, no matter what the score. That is what we do. We don't call it a zone. We match up and what we try to do is put stress on the other team. We wanted them to take about 25-30 threes. That was our goal going into the game. We knew they would make some, Harris made some big shots. If you told me before the game were going to shoot 42% and they were only going to score 64 points, I would have thought we would have won the game. Offensively is where we didn't do it. Defensively, we were right on the mark. We hit our goals. They shot 25 threes and were 42% on the floor. We were not there offensively, and we turned the ball over way to much.
UMass has now won four games in a row to move to 5-6 overall this season.
Ricky Harris scored 20 or more points for the sixth time this season with 23.
Harris moved to 37th in UMass career scoring with 1028 to move past Tim Edwards (1022), Tyrone Weeks (1013) and Stephane Lasme (1011).
Tony Gaffney had his sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. He had zero double-doubles coming into the season.
Tony Gaffney had 10 rebounds for the eighth time this season with 11. It was his 10th career game with double-figure rebounds.
Chris Lowe had 10 assists for the fourth time in five games. He now has 11 career games with double-figure assists, all in the last 24 games.
Matt Glass had a season-high nine points on three made 3-pointers. Glass has all 40 of his points in the last seven games after zero points in the first four games.
UMass beat a team from Indiana for the first time ever, they were 0-6 previously. They were 0-1 vs. Indiana, 0-2 vs. Purdue, 0-1 vs. IUPUI and 0-2 vs. Evansville.
UMass held IUPUI without a field goal for 8:55 in the middle of the second half.
UMass' defense held IUPUI's top scorer Alex Young to just four second-half points after he had his season average 15 in the first half.
MHERST - After committing four critical turnovers in the last three minutes of Saturday's game, University of Massachusetts senior point guard Chris Lowe would have been the goat if the Minutemen let a lead slip away to Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis for the second straight year.
But as the shot clock wound down with under 20 seconds left in the game, Lowe drove to the basket trying to extend the 60-57 lead for UMass. Billy Pettiford fouled Lowe hard, but he still got the shot off as he fell to toward the floor.
Before that, Lowe had missed his first six shots, all of which came with lower degrees of difficulty. But this one rolled around and fell in with 14.2 seconds left. Even though Lowe missed the free throw, the basket all but sealed the Minutemen's 64-57 win over the Jaguars before 4,876 fans at the Mullins Center.
"I want Chris Lowe to take the game over in those situations," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "He's got the ball in his hands at the end of the game.
"He's my senior point guard. He's the leader of the team," Kellogg added. "I love that he has the confidence to make that play at the end of the game."
Lowe did not hesitate.
"Coach just told me to get to the basket and make something happen," said Lowe who finished with that one layup to go with 10 assists and six turnovers. "So I went to the basket and got fouled ... I felt relieved. It took a couple of the turnovers down."
Before the game Kellogg wrote on the board in the team's locker room: "Make it as hard for them as possible."
The Minutemen (5-6) responded, especially in the second half, to get their fourth straight win. For a stretch of almost nine minutes, UMass held the Jaguars (7-5) without a field goal.
Last year at IUPUI, its best player, George Hill, had 25 second-half points to beat UMass. This year the Jaguars' best player is freshman Alex Young, who had 15 points in the first half. But after intermission, Anthony Gurley held Young to just four points on 2-for-10 shooting.
"For us to be able to win ugly, that's kind of what we're shooting for to be able to win pretty or win ugly," Kellogg said. "Anthony Gurley stayed in that kid's shirt for the entire second half ... We did a great job in the second half of making it hard for them."

The longest of those 3s came from almost 40 feet at the end of the first half. The junior guard seemed to be the only player on the floor aware that the shot clock was nearing zero. He caught the ball with one second left on the shot clock and six on the game clock and launched. With a little help from a friendly rim and backboard, the shot fell in, giving UMass a 34-31 lead at intermission.
"That's my range," Harris said laughing.
As he watched the shot fall, Jaguars coach Ron Hunter fell to the floor shaking his head. "When a kid banks in a half-court shot, you know it's not your night," Hunter said.
Kellogg joked that the play ran exactly as it was called.
"I told Ricky if it all breaks down, just shoot it from like half-court and bank it in," Kellogg said.
Two 3s by Harris from more reasonable distances, a dunk and an alley-oop by Tony Gaffney (11 points, 11 rebounds, five blocked shots) gave UMass a 44-34 lead quickly in the second half.
IUPUI answered with nine straight points. But the Jaguars, who nearly upset Arizona State earlier this month and did knock off Seton Hall, could never get the lead as the Minutemen defense held on.
UMass had 21 assists on 24 baskets.
The Minutemen head to Houston to play the Cougars at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

MHERST - On paper, Saturday's 64-57 win over Indian-Purdue-Indianapolis might have been the best game for junior guard Ricky Harris at the University of Massachusetts. His 23 points came on 8-for-12 shooting including 5-for-8 from 3-point range.
His seven rebounds was a career high. He added four assists and three steals and was strong defensively.
But coach Derek Kellogg wants more.
"There were still three or four more chances where he didn't take charges," Kellogg said. "If he would have taken three charges, you're saying Ricky Harris is an unbelievable player. He's just a little bit away from being an unbelievable player."
Harris said his shooting success helped spark the rest of his game, but he believes in Kellogg's emphasis on defense and rebounding.
"I like to see the ball go through the net," Harris said. "I've been focusing on the defensive end because defense leads to offense ... I'm trying to buy in on the defensive end.
"Coach Kellogg always tells me: #Rebound and play defense and you're a nationally known player,' " Harris added. "I feed into it. I want to be known nationally so I'm starting to play defense."
Harris moved up three spots on the Minutemen's career scoring list into 37th place. His total of 1,028 pushed him past Stephane Lasme (1,011), Tyrone Weeks (1,013) and Tim Edwards (1,022). Next up is Derick Claiborne with 1,033.

UMass is 4-1 this year when he reaches 10 assists.
Lowe now has 557 assists in his career, third best in school history, 40 behind No. 2 Edgar Padilla.
GAFFNEY DOUBLE-DOUBLE - Senior Tony Gaffney, who did not have a double-double in his career before this season, now has six. He had 11 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.
DAYTON TIME CHANGE - The start time of the Minutemen's Atlantic 10 opener against Dayton at the MassMutual Center in Springfield has been moved up from 4 p.m. to 1 p.m. to accommodate television as the game will be broadcast on CBS3.
NEXT UP - UMass heads to Houston for a 2 p.m. game Tuesday. The start time was moved up to allow Cougar fans to travel to the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas, where the Houston football team will play Air Force at noon Wednesday.
Tom Penders' squad lost its season opener to Georgia Southern, but has won seven straight since.
MISCELLANEOUS - Former Minutemen Dante Milligan and Rigo Nunez were among the 4,876 fans at the game. Nunez sat behind the IUPUI bench and heckled the Jaguars.
It was first win for UMass over a team from the state of Indiana.

MHERST - Three weeks ago, the introductory anthem rang hollow. The University of Massachusetts, as part of a celebration of its 100th year of basketball, had adopted part of a popular Matchbox 20 song for a pregame video tribute. The oft-repeated chorus states, "Let's See How Far We've Come."
After losing to Boston College in overtime that night, first-year coach Derek Kellogg saw his team drop its sixth straight game and fall to 1-6. Against Division 1 competition, the Minutemen were 0-6. That is not exactly the definition of progress.
Now, though, the Minutemen can play the song without irony. They posted their fourth win in a row yesterday, a hard-fought 64-57 decision over Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
The game was tight throughout, not clinched until Chris Lowe hit his only basket with 15 seconds left. UMass was clinging to a 60-57 lead and milking the shot clock when Lowe got a step on IUPUI point guard Gary Patterson and drove hard into the lane, drawing contact from Billy Pettiford, then angling in a bank shot as he crashed backward to the floor. Though he missed the ensuing free throw, the Minutemen were home free.
Lowe was just 1 for 7 from the field and scored only those 2 points, but still ran the show effectively with 10 assists. It was the fourth time in the last five games he's hit double figures in that category.
"I think he's doing a great job of him and I becoming one," said Kellogg. "He's my senior point guard. He's the leader of the team."
"I don't have to score," said Lowe. "I can do a lot of things to affect a game."
Also illustrating the point was Ricky Harris, who not only turned in a game-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting (5 of 8 from 3-point land), but also produced arguably his most complete effort as a Minuteman. Generously listed at 6 feet 2 inches, Harris matched his career high with 7 rebounds, while adding 4 assists and 3 steals.
Kellogg was impressed, to a point.
"I'm probably riding him pretty hard," said Kellogg, "but he has the talent to be so much better."
Harris added some good fortune to his good play. With the shot clock winding down and just six ticks left in the first half, he hoisted a desperation 3-pointer from just inside half court on a broken play. It banked hard off the glass, caromed high off the front rim, and dropped through for a 34-31 lead.
"When [they're] banking in half-court shots, I knew it wasn't our night," said IUPUI coach Ron Hunter.
Also of note for UMass was the continued all-around play of Tony Gaffney. The senior from Berkley seems to regard points and rebounds as animals for Noah's Ark. He came in averaging 12 in each category, and added 11 apiece yesterday. For good measure, he added five blocked shots. He came into the contest averaging 5.1 blocks, second in the nation.
IUPUI was led by impressive freshman Alex Young, who scored 19 points, 15 in the first half. The Jaguars might not be one of Indiana's best known basketball entities. They're not State U with the national championships under Bobby Knight, or the matted-to-the-scalp intensity of Gene Keady's Purdue Boilermakers. For that matter, they're not even the one-year wonder of the Indiana State Sycamores who went all the way to the national title game with Larry Bird in 1979, nor even the Milan High team that inspired the film "Hoosiers" with Gene Hackman.
What they are is a solid squad that beat UMass a year ago. Even with the loss of star player George Hill to the San Antonio Spurs (where he teams with Matt Bonner, brother of UMass's Luke), the Jaguars have shown promise in the early going. They are 7-5, with a win at Seton Hall, and narrow losses at Indiana and nationally ranked Arizona State (in overtime).
UMass now gets set to test its progress on the road against Houston Tuesday night before returning to the Mullins Center Saturday against Vanderbilt.
MHERST - With each victory in the UMass basketball teams four-game winning streak, the Minutemen seem to rid themselves of problems that had plagued them early in the season.
After making a habit of letting halftime leads slip away during its six-game losing streak, UMass used a stifling defense to expand a three-point lead at intermission yesterday en route to a 64-57 win over Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis at the Mullins Center.
The Minutemen held the Jaguars scoreless for almost nine minutes in the second half.
Was I nervous that wed never win a game again (during the losing streak) ? UMass coach Derek Kellogg asked. Maybe, but I felt pretty good about where we were going. I was hoping we could hold the fort down. In a strange way, I felt pretty good about where this team was. I thought we were just a couple plays from getting those wins.
After UMass (5-6) held the lead for most of the first half, a 3-pointer by IUPUIs Gary Patterson and a jumper by Jon Avery tied the score at 25 with 3:14 left. Two missed free throws by Avery were followed by a floater by Alex Young (19 points) that gave the Jaguars the lead.
A trey by UMass forward Matt Glass, a layup by Young and a 3-pointer by Minuteman guard Ricky Harris had the teams trading the lead before IUPUIs Robert Glenn dunked it to tie the game at 31 with 26 seconds left in the half.
Then, as the Jaguars defense made getting a shot off difficult, Harris hit a buzzer-beater from two steps inside the half-court line to keep the Minutemen on top at the half.
Harris had one of the strongest games of his career, finishing with a game-high 23 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. He credits his success to a newfound focus on defense.
I like to focus on the defensive end because defense leads to offense, he said. Continuing to play defense has really helped us and really brought some energy to us.
Harris started the second half where he left off the first. His two 3-pointers helped UMass build a 10-point lead while holding IUPUI (7-5) without a field goal for 8:55.
Still, the Jaguars pulled to within 60-57 with less than a minute left before Minuteman senior point guard Chris Lowe, held without a basket to that point, made a layup while getting fouled.
I dont always have to score. I can do a lot of things to help the game, said Lowe, who had 10 assists. My coach has been stressing a lot lately that Im a pass-first point guard. Im starting to know where my teammates are on the court, so thats making me better.
UMass got another solid contribution from senior big man Tony Gaffney (11 points, 11 rebounds, 5 blocks, 3 steals).
The Minutemen travel to Houston for a 2 p.m. game Tuesday before returning home to face Vanderbilt at 5 p.m. Saturday.
MHERST, Mass. -- Ricky Harris scored 12 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to spark Massachusetts (5-6) to a 64-57 victory over IUPUI (7-5) on Saturday.
Tony Gaffney added 11 points and 11 rebounds for UMass, which led 34-31 at halftime and stayed on top the rest of the game. The Jaguars beat the visiting Minutemen 89-77 last season.
IUPUI fell behind by 10 points early in the second half but staged a 9-0 run to pull within 44-43 on a basket by Alex Young, who led the Jaguars with 19 points.
John Avery added 13 points and seven rebounds for IUPUI, which had won six of its previous seven games.
UMass guard Chris Lowe sealed the victory with a driving layup with 14 seconds remaining.
The Jags committed 15 turnovers, leading to 17 points for the Minutemen.
"I don't thing we played the smartest (Saturday),'' IUPUI coach Ron Hunter said in a news release from the team. "We looked tired at times and it was almost like we were fatigued.''
UMass used its defense to hold IUPUI without a field goal for nearly nine minutes in the second half.
"When you are involved in a dogfight, it is hard for some of the younger kids to bounce back, especially on the road,'' Hunter said.
"Defensively, I thought we gave them some trouble. But give UMass credit because its pressure defense forced our turnovers. Offensively, we just were not very good. We didn't do what we were supposed to do.''
The Minutemen, who started their season by losing six of seven, now have won their past four.
IUPUI returns home for a two-game Summit League homestand, beginning with a game against Missouri-Kansas City at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
