MHERST - With his team's narrow escape against Fordham still fresh in his mind Thursday morning, University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg said he hopes his players had learned lessons they could carry into Sunday's game at 2 p.m. against La Salle at the MassMutual Center.
"When you have a young team that's not that much better than your opponent, if better at all, you have to do the little things," he said. "For us to be competitive in this league those are the things I have to zero in on as coach.
"Those are the things that can cost you," Kellogg added. "We have a lot of areas we can improve on, which isn't a bad thing. It means we can get a lot better."
Sunday marks the 110th anniversary of the first UMass basketball game when the then-Mass Agricultural College beat the Northampton YMCA 14-9 on Jan. 10, 1900.
And it is the first anniversary of the Minutemen's last game in Springfield. UMass upset Dayton 75-62 at the MassMutual Center in one of the highlights of last season.
But the Minutemen's two games with La Salle during the 2008-09 season were not on any UMass highlight list. The Explorers beat the Minutemen 62-54 in Amherst and 97-88 in Philadelphia.
In the second game, Rodney Green and Darryl Partin each scored 30 points for La Salle. Partin is gone, but Green is very much still around.
He is second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 19 points per game, and has scored 20 or more points eight times this season. Green also is seventh in assists at 3.9 per game and fourth in steals at 1.9.
Other than Partin, a reserve who had a career night against the Minutemen, La Salle returns the rest of the roster that swept UMass a year ago and has one big addition. Freshman big man Aaric Murray is averaging 10 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. His 35 blocked shots are second in the league.
"They beat us twice handily last year and they have their whole squad coming back and I have a fresh new squad," Kellogg said. "Sometimes that's not all bad. Maybe our guys won't know how good they are or how big and strong they are.
"They gave us problems last year," he added. "I'm hoping we can match their size and physical toughness."
There were high expectations for coach John Giannini's team, which was picked No. 4 in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll.
La Salle opened the season 7-3, but has lost four straight games to give it the same 7-7 record as UMass. The most recent of those defeats was encouraging as the Explorers stayed with Xavier before losing 68-62 on Thursday.
But the Jan. 2 loss was more concerning as La Salle lost a 15-point second-half lead and fell 66-61 at Binghamton. The Bearcats were in the NCAA Tournament last year, but after six players - including former Minuteman Tiki Mayben - were kicked off the team, coach Kevin Broadus was fired and athletic director Joel Thirer resigned. Despite a roster filled with walk-ons, Binghamton beat La Salle.
Kellogg said he is not sure about forward Javorn Farrell's status for the game. The freshman is battling a foot injury and could be a game-time decision.
NOTES - The game is Sunday instead of Saturday as part of a new Atlantic 10 scheduling policy. If a team plays a Thursday game as La Salle did at home against Xavier, it does not have to play again until Sunday.
The Springfield Armor have released former Minuteman point guard Chris Lowe. In 10 games with the Armor, Lowe averaged five points and 2.4 assists in 17.4 minutes per game.
In the hope of drawing fans of both the Minutemen and New England Patriots to Sunday's game, UMass promises to have the 1 p.m. NFL playoff game against Baltimore televised on the MassMutual Center concourse and will frequently announce the score.

PRINGFIELD, Mass. - La Salle used a 18-5 run to begin the second half to erase a seven-point UMass lead and the Minutemen were outscored, 16-10, over the final five minutes as they fell to the Explorers, 80-74, on Sunday afternoon at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. Freshman Freddie Riley's 22 points led all scorers, while La Salle placed four players in double-figures. UMass fell to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle improved to 8-7 and 1-1 in A-10 play.
Riley shot 6-for-14 from 3-point range on his way to 22 points, while Ricky Harris finished with 17 points. Terrell Vinson was 2-for-2 from behind the arc and also finished in double-figures for the Minutemen with 13 points.
Aaric Murray (18), Rodney Green (17), Yves Mekongo (17), and Steve Weingarten (10) all finished with double-digit points for the Explorers. Green recorded 12 assists, while Murray grabbed a dozen boards.
The Minutemen struggled at the free throw line, shooting 52.2 percent (12-23). The Explorers shot 67.6 percent (23-34) from the line.
UMass shot 42.2 percent (27-64) for the game and 33.3 percent (8-24) from 3-point range, while La Salle shot 44.8 percent (26-58) overall and 35.7 percent (5-14) from behind the arc. The Explorers had a 47-32 advantage on the boards, including a 30-13 edge in the second half.
UMass trailed by six with 3:04 left in the game when Harris completed a 3-point play to pull UMass within three before Jerrell Williams sank two free throws for La Salle to up the lead back to five, 72-67, with 2:39 left. The Minutemen missed four out of five free throws between the 1:18 and 31-second marks, while La Salle went 8-for-8 at the line in the final 21 seconds to secure the win.
The game started as a back and forth affair until the Minutemen outscored the Explorers, 9-3, over a stretch in which UMass held the visiting team without a field goal for 4:51 to take a 17-13 lead with 8:40 left in the half. The UMass first half lead reached as much as 10, 33-23, on a Terrell Vinson 3-pointer with 3:56 left, before eventually taking a seven-point lead, 37-30, into the locker room at halftime.
Vinson led the way in the opening 20 minutes with nine points, including 2-for-2 from 3-point range, while the Minutemen shot 50 percent as a team. Mekongo led the Explorers with eight points, while his club shot 37.9 percent from the floor in the opening half.
The lead quickly evaporated in the second half as La Salle opened the half with an 8-0 run, capped off by two Rodney Green free throws that gave the Explorers a 38-37 lead as they held UMass without a point for the first three minutes. The La Salle run eventually reached 18-5 over the first six minutes of the half as it built a six-point lead, 48-42.
At the 12:40 with UMass down seven, its biggest deficit, Riley caught fire, hitting four-straight 3-pointers in less than three minutes to give the Minutemen the lead back, 56-54, with 10 minutes to go. The teams went back and forth over the next five minutes with neither side building a lead bigger than three until the Explorers scored six-straight points to take a 70-64 lead with 3:18 to go.
The Minutemen return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Richmond to take on the Spiders in 7 p.m. A-10 contest. The road trip concludes on Saturday when UMass and Temple meet at 2 p.m. in Philadelphia.
- Freshman Freddie Riley made six 3-point field goals. The UMass record is eight, which has been done six times. Most recently by Monty Mack vs. St. Bonaventure in 2001.
- Ricky Harris continues to stand seventh in career scoring at UMass with 17 in the game. He now has 1,590. Next on the list is No. 6 Tony Barbee (1,643).
- Harris continues stand to eighth in career made free throws with three in the game. He now has 332. Next on the list is No. 7 Rashaun Freeman (379).
- Harris continues to stand fourth in career made 3-pointers (236) and 3-pointers attempted (662). Next on the list in both is Carmelo Travieso, who had 245 makes on 666 attempts from 1993-97.
Individual Player Notes
- In his second game back from minor knee surgery, Freddie Riley had a career-high 22 points. It was his fifth game in double-figures this season.
- Ricky Harris scored in double-figures for the 14th time this season in as many games with 17. Harris now has 25 games in a row in double-figures and 78 in his 112 career games. Dating to his sophomore year, Harris has 75 of his last 80 games with 10 or more points.
- Harris is the A-10's second-leading active career scorer (1,590) behind only La Salle's Rodney Green (1,641).
- Terrell Vinson had his seventh game this season in double-figures with 13. His last game with more than 10 also came in the throwback jerseys, worn in Boston against Memphis on Dec. 19.
- Terrell Vinson had a career-high four assists, passing his former best of two.
- Sampson Carter drew his second charge of the season, in the first half.
- Gary Correia drew his fourth-career start and third this season. He had played his first 74 game off the bench.
- Freshman Javorn Farrell didn't dress for the second game in a row as he was hampered by a groin/hip injury.
Series, Facility Notes
- UMass leads the series with La Salle, 13-10. The loss continues a streak of three wins in a row by La Salle. Prior to that UMass had won three in a row in the series.
- UMass is now 39-24 all-time at the MassMutual Center.
- The Minutemen are 13-4 at the building since the 1990 season.
- Springfield native Derek Kellogg is 1-1 as a coach in his hometown arena. He went 8-1 as a player at UMass in what was called the Springfield Civic Center at the time.
Also Of Note
- Former UMass players and current members of the D-League's Springfield Armor Dante Milligan and Maurice Maxwell were at the game.
- Hashim "Big City" Bailey wore protective goggles after suffering a scratched eye, for the second game in a row.
- The attendance of 4,012 was the highest in Western Mass this season.
Opening statement from Coach Derek Kellogg
I thought it was a game of two halves. We played a very good first half. I thought we controlled the first half. We played them even on the boards and then the second half, I would say the key factor was that they out rebounded us by 15 or 17 boards. At times their older more mature guys made some plays and I thought the kid Murray had a good a second half as I have seen him have all season. They played good, made some shots that as a coach you play the percentages. Do you want to get Rodney Green posting up or Murray or Mekongo or Williams make some shots from the outside. In the second half, I thought that they knocked down just about every open shot and they were pretty good in their zone, particularly Murray in the middle.
Coach Kellogg on Freddie Riley's performance
Freddie was great, for that run there he single handily put us on his back. We tried to pick up the tempo of the game, play a little bit faster. I think that got us some open shots. We pressed them a little more than we have all season and Freddie did tonight what I have envisioned him doing as a member of the UMass Minutemen. When you see a freshman get 22 points it looks good for the rest of the season and the future. He gave us some quality minutes and I am going to try to play him more.
Ricky Harris talks about the second half
I thought we came out flat in the second half, we gave them the momentum and they ran away with it. They also out rebounded us in the second half. Its tough, we work on it every day, and this being our home court, we had the crowd behind us we should have made free throws, but we have to get over it and get back to work.
Freddie Riley on how a big scoring night like tonight affects his shot selection
I am confident when I am in a groove like that. I just try to make shots, take good shots so that they keep going in. When you are in a groove and you start taking bad shots, you will most likely start missing so I just try to take good shots.
Ricky Harris on the effect Aaric Murray had on the second half of the game
He definitely played a major part. He altered a lot of shots on our drives to the basket, mine in particular. He was long so he got a lot of offensive rebounds, which helped their team out. He made some tough plays down the stretch, some tough baskets.
Opening Statement from LaSalle coach Dr. John Giannini
Anytime you get a conference win you have to be thrilled. I think this conference is going to have an amazing race this year. UMass has proven with some of their wins this year. They have very good talent, they are young but they are going to continue to do well. We're thrilled to win. I thought our effort was outstanding, we made some free throws late, we played some good defense late. We did some simple things. Sometimes simple things win basketball games, like defense, and rebounding and effort Tonight our guys game thru with those things.
Coach Giannini talks about his teaming coming out in the second half
I don't think either team did anything strategically different. Games have ebbs and flows, people have ebbs and flows. You don't play the same all the time. [Having Aaric Murray back] certainly helped. I thought Aaric had his best game of the year. He's a young player and we are going to build some things around him. Like a lot of young players he has struggled here and there, but he's listening and he's responding.
PRINGFIELD - Whether it was a run by La Salle at the beginning of the second half, the missed free throws by the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team at the end of it, or the lack of rebounding throughout, the Minutemen could not keep up with the Explorers after halftime Sunday at the MassMutual Center.
That all added up to an 80-74 win by La Salle.
Things get tougher this week as UMass hits the road to play Wednesday night at Richmond and at No. 21 Temple on Saturday.
The Minutemen (7-8, 1-1 Atlantic 10) had made their biggest progress from the beginning of the season on improved rebounding. But they struggled on the glass against the Explorers, especially after intermission.
La Salle (8-7, 1-1 A-10) outrebounded UMass 30-13 in the second half and turned nine offensive rebounds into 12 points in that time.
Minuteman junior big man Hashim "Big City" Bailey, who lately has been the team's most consistent rebounder, had just three boards in 10 minutes during which he was plagued by foul trouble before he picked up his fifth with five minutes left in the game.
"The key factor was they outrebounded us by 17" in the second half, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "I thought the kid (Aaric) Murray had as good a second half as I've seen him play all season. He changed the complexion of the game."
Murray, a freshman, played a big role in the Explorers' second-half dominance. Tied to the bench for all but seven minutes of the first half (four points, two rebounds), the 6-foot-10 big man exploded in the second half and finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.
"Aaric had his best game of the year," La Salle coach John Giannini said. "He's a young player and we're going to build some things around him. He played tremendous today."
Murray had the Explorers' first two baskets to open the second half, which started an 8-0 run that blossomed into a 18-5 surge. That put the visitors ahead 48-42 with 5 minutes, 27 seconds played after halftime. The Minutemen led 37-30 at intermission.
"We came out flat in the second half and gave them momentum and they ran away with it," UMass senior guard Ricky Harris said.
Kellogg agreed. "I was hoping we'd come out with a little more fire and energy," he said. "La Salle did a good job slowing the tempo down and throwing the ball into the post."
The Minutemen regained the lead when their own highly touted freshman, guard Freddie Riley, got hot and made four 3-pointers in 2:31 to give UMass a 56-54 advantage and got the crowd back into the game.
Riley led the Minutemen with 22 points, Harris scored 17 and Terrell Vinson added 13. Anthony Gurley had a season-low seven.
The lead bounced back and forth until a free throw by Jerrell Williams with five minutes left launched a 6-0 run that gave La Salle a 70-64 lead with 3:23 remaining.
UMass had chances to get closer late. But with the Minutemen trailing by five, Gurley missed two free throws, David Gibbs made just one of two and Sean Carter missed the front end of a one-and-one, forcing the Minutemen to foul and take tougher shots than they might have attempted in a closer game.
"Those are free throws that you definitely need," Kellogg said. "I'm expecting them to make those."

PRINGFIELD - For a time it looked like Freddie Riley was going to be a hero for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team Sunday at the MassMutual Center.
In his second game back after surgery to repair a torn right meniscus, Riley scored 22 points - including 15 in the second half - on six 3-pointers.
Four of those 3-pointers came in a 2 minute, 31 second stretch in the second half that took the Minutemen from a six-point deficit to a two-point lead, but UMass could not do enough defensively during that stretch to take full advantage. La Salle came away with an 80-74 victory.
"I knew he was a good shooter, but boy he was tremendous today," Explorers coach John Giannini said. "He obviously made it a game."
UMass coach Derek Kellogg hopes that it is a sign of things to come.
"Freddie was great. For that run there, he single-handedly put us on his back," Kellogg said. "Freddie did tonight what I envisioned him doing as a UMass Minuteman.
"It looks good for the future," he added. "He gave us some quality minutes tonight and honestly I'm going to try to play him more."
Riley credited his performance to heeding Kellogg's call for better shot selection.
"I'm more confident when I'm in a groove like that," Riley said. "I was just trying to take good shots."
FARRELL OUT - Freshman Javorn Farrell missed his second straight game with a foot injury.
HARRIS 3-POINT WOES - Ricky Harris will leave UMass as one of the most prolific 3-point shooters in school history, but the long-range shots have been hard to come by lately. After making four-of-six against Holy Cross on Dec. 5, Harris is 5-for-34 (14.7 percent).
FOUL TROUBLE - Hashim "Big City" Bailey, who had at least three fouls in five of the 11 games in which he played previously, had managed to avoid fouling out until Sunday. He picked up three whistles in the tightly officiated first half and fouled out with exactly five minutes remaining.
KELLOGG IN SPRINGFIELD - The loss was just Kellogg's second as a college player or coach in his hometown. The Minutemen were 7-1 at the then-Springfield Civic Center during his playing career. He's now 1-1 at the MassMutual Center as UMass head coach.
The Minutemen fell to 39-24 all-time in the building.
The game drew 4,012 fans compared to 5,485 a year ago in Springfield, but Sunday's crowd was likely hurt by competition from the New England Patriots playoff game.
