MHERST - With just two days between Sunday's loss to La Salle and tonight's game at Richmond, University of Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg and his staff worked feverishly at practice Tuesday to prepare the Minutemen.
Two days is a small window before any game, but it's a particularly short time to get ready for Richmond's style of play which is rooted in the Princeton offense.
"It's such a different style and us playing without a lot of time to prepare is always very difficult," Kellogg said. "Nine or 10 of our guys have never faced a Princeton offense. We've got our work cut out for us."
Like many head coaches who played or were assistants at Princeton, Spider coach Chris Mooney - an alumnus of the Ivy League school - has used the possession-based, court-spread, backdoor-cut-heavy Princeton approach both in his first head coaching job at Air Force and now at Richmond.
But while the Princeton offense can help a less athletic team stay with a more athletic squad, it had become a bit stifling for the Spiders who feature their most talented lineup in recent years. So Mooney loosened the reins, keeping many Princeton principles while also allowing for more transition offense.
"I think we have guys here now that can take advantage of situations they're in," Mooney said. "I think they've done a very good job of it, being very aggressive offensively."
It has paid off pretty well for the Spiders (12-5, 1-1 Atlantic 10). Their wins over Mississippi State, Missouri and Florida have them in contention for an at-large NCAA Tournament bid if they can deliver a strong conference season.
Making things tougher for the Minutemen (7-8, 1-1 A-10), who are 1-4 on the road this season, is that Richmond is 7-0 at the Robins Center where the teams play at 7 p.m.
"We're a confident team and we're ready to get back on the floor on Wednesday night," Mooney said. "We're excited to be at home."
The Minutemen's makeshift point guard rotation led by Ricky Harris figures to have its hands full on both ends of the floor with Richmond point guard Kevin Anderson. The junior is third in the conference at 18.2 points per game and second in the A-10 with 2.1 steals per game.
"Kevin being such a great player makes it easier on everybody," Mooney said. "He has the ability to control the game at his pace, get other guys involved and score timely baskets. He takes so much pressure off of all of us."
Kellogg echoed Mooney's praise about Anderson.
"He's a very, very good player. He wasn't great here last year which is one of the reasons we were able to beat them," Kellogg said. "But he really makes them go."
The Minutemen will likely have freshman Javorn Farrell back from a foot injury that has hampered him for weeks and kept him out of the last two UMass games.
Tonight's game figures to be somewhat of a homecoming for the product of Woodbridge, Va., which is 90 minutes from Richmond. Farrell still has friends in the area, but most of his family is now in New York.
"If he's ready to go he'll play, but I'm not sure what kind of shape he'll be in after two weeks off," Kellogg said. "He gives us a bigger guy on the wing and a guy who is a little more physical."
Fellow freshman Raphiael Putney is also from Woodbridge, but he's not likely to play and is expected to redshirt this season.

ICHMOND, Va. - UMass made a spirited comeback after falling behind by 13 late in the first half to force overtime, but lost 70-63 on Wednesday night at the Robins Center. Richmond outscored UMass 17-10 in the extra session. Freshman Freddie Riley led UMass with 20 points while senior Ricky Harris added 18.
Richmond's duo of Kevin Anderson (19) and David Gonzalvez (16) scored 14 of the Spiders 17 points in overtime. Sophomore Darrius Garrett blocked an Atlantic 10, Richmond school-record and UMass opponent-record 14 shots. Richmond also swatted a UMass opponent record 17 shots as a team.
Richmond opened the overtime with Gonzalvez (3-pointer) and Anderson hitting back-to-back jumpers for a five-point edge at 58-53, 48 seconds into the extra period. Riley answered with an NBA-range trey to cut the lead to 58-56 with 2:34 left in OT. The teams exchanged pairs of free throws for a 60-58 Richmond lead. Anderson then made a runner for a 4-point lead, 62-58 with 1:36 left. Richmond scored the next three points on free throws to put the game out of hand.
The final eight minutes of regulation were intense on both ends of the court. Richmond held a narrow lead until 1:12 left when Harris hit a pull-up jumper to give UMass a 53-52 advantage. Darrius Garrett tied the game with a free throw with 59.6 left. Garrett then blocked a UMass shot with 45 seconds left to regain a Spiders possession. Richmond then wore down the shotclock before Javorn Farrell forced a jumpball with the arrow facing UMass' way setting up the final possession. Harris took the inbounds but couldn't get a shot off in the final 13.2 seconds.
After Harris opened the game's scoring with a fastbreak lay-up, Richmond took a 5-2 lead on a Gonzalvez 3-pointer 3:34 into the action and never trailed for the remainder of the half. The Spiders built a lead of 13 (25-12) to finish off a 10-0 run. Anderson made two free throws after a technical foul was called on head coach Derek Kellogg with 6:16 left in the first half.
UMass fed off their coach's energy and emotion and went on a 13-3 run over the final 6:16 of the half to cut the deficit to 28-25 at halftime. The Minutemen's defense was strong late in the half as it held Richmond off the board for the final 4:17 of the first half.
UMass took its first lead of the game since 2-0 on a Harris lay-up with 14:02 left in the second half to go up 36-34. The teams then traded the lead back-and-forth for the next few minutes. Riley canned back-to-back 3-pointers to give UMass a 42-39 lead with 12:04 left.
Richmond scored the seven points in a row to regain a lead of four points at 46-42 with 8:49 left in the second half. The defense continued to be intense but Richmond took a 50-46 lead on a putback by Justin Harper with 3:54 left in the second.
UMass continues its two-game road swing at No. 19 Temple on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Minutemen are in the midst of a stretch of four of five games away from the Mullins Center. UMass will host St. Bonaventure next Wednesday at 7 p.m. and play at No. 22 Baylor next Saturday.

ICHMOND, Va. - Despite 17 blocked shots by Richmond, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team rallied in the second half to force overtime before losing Wednesday night at the Robins Center.
Led by an Atlantic 10 record 14 blocks by 6-9 sophomore Darrius Garrett, the Spiders swatted the Minutemen 70-63. Richmond (13-5, 2-1 A-10) set a team record with 17 blocks.
Garrett had 12 of his blocks in the second half and overtime. He just missed a triple double, finishing with 13 rebounds and eight points. The rebounds and blocks set career highs, and the points tied his career best.
Garrett was two short of the NCAA Division I record for blocks in a game.
"For them to get a boost out of him that way makes them a very formidable team," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "He really changed the game for them on the defensive end of the floor,
"I thought their age and maturity carried over into overtime and gave them a boost," he added. "They're a very good basketball team. I thought our guys competed very hard and we played a good game except for a few execution plays coming down the stretch.
"(Garrett) obviously was the player of the game. He was huge for them," Kellogg continued. "There were three or four times I thought we had easy layups and he came up with a block. Not only did he have 14 blocks, I thought he also altered six or seven shots. That was as dominating a rejection performance as I've seen in a long time."
Said freshman Freddie Riley, who led the Minutemen (7-9, 1-2 A-10) with 20 points, said, "It seems like every time you go to the hole, he's somewhere around the rim looking for a blocked shot. It's very tough playing against a good shot-blocker like that."
Each team had a chance to take the lead in the final minute of regulation and neither got off a shot.
The Spiders, fighting an evaporating shot clock, got tied up and the arrow gave the ball to UMass. But the Minutemen could not get off a shot in the final 13.2 seconds as Ricky Harris dribbled most of it away.
"Ricky just waited a little too long to make his move and make his play," Kellogg said. "Listen, he won the game against Fordham for us and we really put the ball in the (hands of the) only senior I have."
Harris, who finished with 18 points, said he momentarily lost track of the time. Kevin Anderson of Richmond also did a strong defensive job, Harris added.
"I was supposed to go a lot faster than I went," Harris said.
Kellogg earned a technical foul late in the first half. He tore off his jacket, emphatically yanked off his tie and jawed at official Todd Williams to the point of getting hit with the T.
The Spiders soon went up by 14 but UMass, behind Riley, got within 28-25 at halftime.
The Minutemen led by as many as three early in the second half, but could not sustain an attack against shot-blocking Richmond.
"We showed a bit of toughness today," Harris said. "We played hard. Down the stretch, we need to learn how to finish out the game,"
Garrett made that difficult. UMass got within striking range in the final minute of overtime, only to see Garrett block three more shots.
"He changed a lot of our shots today," Harris said. "He was definitely a presence in the paint. He had 14 blocks. That just says it all right there."
UMass stays on the road to play at Temple at 2 p.m. Saturday.
assachusetts kept taking the ball inside. Darrius Garrett kept sending it back.
The University of Richmond's 6-9 sophomore set a school and Atlantic 10 Conference record with 14 blocks -- two fewer than the NCAA record -- as the Spiders won 70-63 last night in overtime. The volume of the Robins Center crowd of 4,019 grew with each rejection by Garrett, a resident of Atlanta who hasn't started a college game.
That's likely to change soon. Garrett, a 210-pounder, also pulled in 13 rebounds and scored 8 for the Spiders (2-1, 13-5). Together, they collected a school-record 17 blocks.
"I think it intimidates the other team a little bit, and drags them down," Garrett said of shot-blocking.
UR's veteran guard combination of Kevin Anderson (19 points) and David Gonzalvez (16) carried the scoring along with 6-10 Justin Harper (12).
But the night belonged to the quick-jumping Garrett.
"It's such an uplifting thing for your team if you're in a slump and you see [the opponents] who look like they have a wide-open layup to the basket, and this man just comes from the weak side and just throws it into like the third row," Harper said of Garrett.
One of Garrett's blocks ricocheted off the shooter's head.
"That's the most amazing stat that I've seen on a stat sheet probably since I've been coaching," said UR coach Chris Mooney. "You might see seven 3s in a game, or 30 points in a game, but 14 blocks is really an amazing thing."
UMass (1-2, 7-9) had the final possession of regulation, but Anderson's defense on Ricky Harris, a high-quality A-10 guard, led to overtime. Gonzalvez started OT by hitting a 22-footer, and after a Garrett block, Anderson hit a pull-up jumper to put UR ahead 58-53. The Minutemen were scrambling the rest of the way and never really got back into it.
Garrett was not charged with a foul in his 32 minutes. His defensive impact was even greater than the incredible number of blocks. In the estimation of UMass' coach Derek Kellogg, Garrett changed "six or seven shots" that he didn't block. Also, Garrett's defensive presence forced a couple of walks.
Shooters get into rhythm. Garrett said he is a shot-blocker who does. He had 25 blocks in 17 games before last night, when the Minutemen were told by Kellogg to keep going at Garrett.
"Once the first two or three come, they all kind of fall in place after that, and it gets a little easier," Garrett said. He estimated that "very few" of his blocks came on the player he was covering. The rest were the result of Garrett helping on other Minutemen.
The Spiders "kind of force [opponents] toward me a little bit. They know my ability," Garrett said. "I help them out. They help me out."
Richmond took 33 first-half shots and 20 of them were 3-point attempts (five hits). The Spiders' reliance on long-range shots -- and their failure to hit many of them -- allowed UMass to score the last 11 points of the first half. UR led 28-25 at intermission.
"We have good 3-point shooters on our team and that's a big part of our offense," Mooney said. "But we're much better when we're shooting [two-point shots] 70 percent of the time, which I think we're probably close to statistically.
"We're better when we're attacking the basket."
The Spiders did so in the second half and in OT, attempting only seven 3-pointers. They made none of them, but had Garrett on the other end of the court to repel the Minutemen.
"He really changed the game on the defensive end of the floor," Kellogg said. "There were three or four times I thought we had easy layups and he came up with a block."
