Coach Kellogg's post-game conference ![]()
he last time the Massachusetts mens basketball team played a team with a prominent shot-blocker was against Richmond on Jan. 13 when forward Darrius Garrett recorded a career-high 14 blocks against the Minutemen as they lost 70-63 in overtime.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg doesnt think any player will record that many blocks against his team for a while. However, he believes that tonights opponent, St. Bonaventure, will make going to the basket difficult because he views Andrew Nicholson as a superior shot-blocker.
You have to be conscious of when theres a guy in there blocking shots like that, Kellogg said. Weve let our guys know what were looking for if hes coming over to block shots.
The Minutemen (7-10, 1-3 Atlantic 10) will look to find more open looks such as a lob over Nicholson or kicking out for a 3-pointer. Shooting hasnt been one of their strengths, as they are 13th in the A-10 in field-goal percentage (40.8) and 11th in 3-point percentage (31.3).
Meanwhile, the Bonnies (8-8, 1-2 A-10) are at the top of the conference in shooting (48.2 percent), but have been dealing with losses against quality opponents the entire season.
SBU lost by 13 points to No. 5 Syracuse on Dec. 19, and are 2-4 since, which included a three-game losing streak to open up January before defeating Saint Josephs by a narrow 68-65 win.
Although UMass will be at the Mullins Center for the first time since Jan. 6, when it defeated Fordham, Kellogg expects tonights meeting to be difficult because of the Bonnies experience this season.
I think theyre in a similar position that we are, Kellogg said. Theyve played in a ton of tough games that have come down to the wire, and similar to us, they just havent been able to pull all of them out.
The Minutemen are currently on a three-game losing streak, which other than a loss to the Spiders includes losses to La Salle and hot-shooting Temple.
Against the No. 16 Owls, UMass came back from a 22-point lead to come within single digits, but couldnt survive the guard tandem of Ryan Brooks and Juan Fernandez, who finished 14-of-22 from 3-point range.
Despite the Minutemens latest road woes, Kellogg is seeing a lot of improvement out of his team, and hopes to see his players benefit from their work over the past week with a win.
I think it would be a good bonus for these guys that are playing hard and competing at a higher level, Kellogg said. Were still not playing as smart as I want, but a reward of a victory coming up at some point would be good for team morale and also that if you play the game the right way, the wins will come.
In the last game against Temple, Kellogg inserted guard David Gibbs back into the lineup after trying to bring more experience to his lineup by using junior Gary Correia. Before Tuesdays practice, he said that both players were playing well, but would base his decision for tonight based on how he believes they match up.

MHERST - Despite experiencing the second longest losing streak - three games - of his coaching career, University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg believes his team has improved and wants to see the Minutemen rewarded.
"It would be a good bonus for these guys," he said. "They're playing hard and competing at a high level. Getting a victory would be good for team morale, but if you play the game the right way, wins will come.
"We're working towards that," Kellogg added. "We're not a finished product, but we're moving in the right direction."
UMass (7-10, 1-3 Atlantic 10) will try to snap the streak tonight when it hosts St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
"We need one bad, in the worst way," said senior guard Ricky Harris. "We keep coming out and playing hard in games, but we need to learn how to finish and get wins.
"Hopefully we can turn this around," he added. "If we continue to play as hard as we've been playing these last couple of games, we can come out with a win. Hopefully we can start on Wednesday."
Harris hopes to put his own shooting struggles behind him. Since missing the Grambling State game on Dec. 11 with an ankle injury, Harris has made just six-of-42 3-point attempts (14.3 percent).
"I've been coming in early every day to get shots up. It's a mental thing right now," Harris said. "It's just locking in, staying focused and focusing on the rim.
"Shots will start falling for me again," he continued. "It's just a matter of when it's going to be over. I've never had a slump this long. It's a matter of staying focused and confident and keeping my mental approach where it needs to be."
The Bonnies arrive in Amherst at 8-8, but they are 0-6 in road games. After opening the season 6-3, they have lost five of their last seven. They dropped their first two league games to George Washington and Charlotte before beating Saint Joseph's 68-65 on Saturday in western New York.
"They're a lot like us. They've been in a lot of close games that have come down to the wire," Kellogg said. "They just haven't been able to pull them out. They're a good team. We're fortunate to be the home team and hopefully that gives our guys a little stability."
Sophomore Andrew Nicholson, last year's A-10 rookie of the year has shown no signs of a sophomore slump. His .482 field goal percentage tops the conference and he's among the A-10 leaders in scoring (15.3 points per game), rebounding (7.9 per game) and blocked shots (2.1).
Senior wings Jonathan Hall (12.1 points per game) and Chris Matthews (11.6) have also been reliable scorers for coach Mark Schmidt's squad.
The Minutemen lost 83-75 at St. Bonaventure last year, snapping a six-game winning streak by UMass in the rivalry.
The Minutemen are 5-1 at the Mullins Center this season, but tonight's game is their first in Amherst since edging Fordham on Jan. 6 and just their second since beating Grambling on Dec. 11.
"It feels good to be back. We have the students back and the home crowd," Harris said. "Hopefully the ball will fall in our favor in this game."

MHERST, Mass. - After a game that featured eight lead changes and eight ties, a Freddie Riley 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed the mark as UMass fell to St. Bonaventure, 70-69, on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen came back from a 10-point deficit with four minutes to go. Ricky Harris led the Minutemen with 22 points, while Anthony Gurley and Riley added 16 and 12, respectively. The Minutemen fell to 7-11 overall and 1-4 in A-10 play, while the Bonnies improved to 9-8 overall and 2-2 in conference.
Andrew Nicholson led all scorers with 24 points for the Bonnies on 10-of-18 shooting, including 6-of-6 from the foul line. Michael Davenport had a double-double for St. Bonaventure with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Minutemen trailed by seven, 68-61, with four minutes left but a Riley 3-pointer, a Harris layup, and a Harris dunk off a miss following a David Gibbs steal, tied the game up at 68-68 with 2:38 to go. After Nicholson sank two free throws for St. Bonaventure and Gurley made 1-of-2 at the line for UMass, the Minutemen had possession of the ball with a minute to go.
Following a long possession, a Riley 3-pointer from the top of the key was off the mark, giving the Bonnies the ball with 41 seconds to go. After Bonnies miss, the Minutemen came away with the rebound with 10 seconds to go, working the ball up the floor before Riley took a pass on the deep right wing for the attempt at the buzzer.
UMass shot 41.5 percent (27-65) from the field, including 4-for-24 from 3-point range, while St. Bona shot 48.2 percent (27-56) and was 1-for-10 from behind the arc. The Bonnies held the edge on the boards, 40-32.
Both teams' offenses got off to slow starts, combining for just six points, a 4-2 Bonnies lead, at the first media timeout with 15:42 left in the half. As the offenses warmed up, the two clubs went back and forth for the duration of the half with eight lead changes and six ties. The Minutemen took a four-point lead, their biggest of the half, 25-21, on a Riley jumper with 4:41 left. The Bonnies then went on a 9-2 run over the final four minutes to take a 30-27 lead into halftime.
Nicholson led all scorers in the opening 20 minutes with 15 points to go with five rebounds and four blocks. UMass was led by eight points from Harris, while Riley added seven. St. Bona held a slight edge in shooting, 39.3 percent (11-28) to 36.7 percent (11-30). The Bonnies turned the ball over 10 times in the first half to UMass' five, but a 21-15 rebounding advantage evened things out for the road team.
A Harris 3-pointer just over a minute into the second half tied the game at 32-32, but the Bonnies, led by six points from Davenport, outscored the Minutemen, 13-6, over the next five minutes to open up a seven-point lead, 45-38, with 14 minutes to go. The St. Bona lead reached double-digits, 57-47, at the midway point of the second half on a Davenport runner in the lane.
UMass responded by scoring seven-straight points, finished off by a Harris 3-pointer, to pull within three, 57-54, with 9:08 to go.
The Minutemen travel to Waco, Texas for their final non-conference game of the season on Saturday when they take on No. 25 Baylor at 4 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

Ricky Harris on the final play of the game
Basically I just wanted to push, see if I had a lay-up. I saw a guy who was guarding Freddie come over and stop my penetration. I saw Freddie wide open he's a great shooter, I've got confidence in him, and I kicked it out to him and he shot a three.
Freddie Riley on how the shot felt coming out of his hands
Yeah it felt good but once it left my hands I kind of knew it was going to be short. It was a clear shot, and I was wide open. I should have made it but unfortunately I missed so we lost the game.
Ricky Harris on how frustrating the loss is
It's real frustrating man because everyday at practice we come out and work hard and we learn. We play hard in practice, we do everything in practice and we just can't find a way to close out games, and it's kind of getting frustrating. But we've got a good group of guys here, none of us are starting to go our separate ways. We're all still sticking together, we're all still hanging in there together and hopefully we're going to find a way to get this rolling. We just have to, like I said at previous press conferences, we've just got to come back and work hard at our game. That's something that we've been doing. We've been working hard every day, we've just got to find a way to close it out. Just close it out.
Ricky Harris on his confidence
I just don't want to lose anymore. I've gotten into the gym these last couple nights, worked on my game, my J late night after practice. It boosted my confidence I played more relaxed and more loose out there. Coach Kellogg talked to me and I do feel more relaxed out there.
Ricky Harris on Nicholson's performance
In the first half he had half of their points. They had 30 as a team and he had 15 of their 30. That just speaks for itself. Five rebounds, four blocks, he was a big part for them. He altered a lot of our shots when we went to the lane, and he got our big man in foul trouble. So he did a lot for them in the first half, and I guess that kind of set the tone for them and gave them confidence to come into this game and into the second half.
Ricky Harris on Coach Kellogg's feelings
Obviously he's frustrated, but you can see that he's not giving up. He's still motivated, he's still telling us that it's going to turn around. And when we see our coach like that, it just motivates us because a lot of teams in this situation just pack their bags and that's something that we're not doing because our coaches aren't doing it. We're not going to give up on them.
Freddie Riley on their chances
We always thought we were going to pull it out because every day in practice when we scrimmage we do end of game situations. One team will be down eight points with three minutes left. It just didn't go our way.
Harris on the three-point shooting struggles
A lot of teams are starting to play a pack defense and clog the lane up so when we drive you see a lot of guys converging in and coming in. But we do three-point shooting in practice for a good amount of practice. So it's just basically us raising up and shooting with confidence, being able to stand up there and knock down shots. And that's just something that we've got to do so teams will respect our three-point ball. We have three-point shooters, we've just got to start making some.
Coach Kellogg on the game
Well I'd be feeling much better if that last shot would have went in. It was one of those situations where I told the guys when they called a timeout that we're going to play it straight out. If they had made a shot we had set a play for a three, and on a miss I just said we were going to go. I really wanted to try to get in the paint to shoot a lay-up, but they did a nice job of setting up what we would call a wall. Freddie was wide open, I elected to kind of let him take a wide open three that he works on very often in practice, and I had all the confidence that that ball was going in. I was actually kind of surprised when it didn't. And I thought it was a good played game, we missed some little things that we're going to work on that I thought were the difference in the game. You know, a few loose balls here and there. They got to the free throw line many more times than we did which was kind of a battle cry before the game. And our own defense needs a little bit of work.
Coach Kellogg on the size of UMass' lineup
When we pressed and had Javorn come in, we played a little smaller, a little faster, and a little more athletic. We were able to force some turnovers and really create the tempo and allow the home crowd to get involved in the game. We tied it at I believe it was 68 and I thought we were in good shape to win the game.
Coach Kellogg on Farrell's second to last shot
I wouldn't say it's exactly the shot I was looking for. I explained to him in the locker room after the game that with that amount of time, drive the ball to the rim for future reference. He's only a freshman and that's probably the first time he's been in that situation as a college player. So I wanted him to know that at home, in that situation, take the ball to the rim. I didn't think it was a bad shot but it definitely wasn't the shot I was looking for.
Derek Kellogg on the second half
We played a little tougher. We had better ball pressure and I think our big guys forced them off the block a little bit more than in the first half.
Coach Kellogg on the losses
I keep telling them let's reward ourselves. Let's come out here and reward ourselves for how hard we're working in practice, how hard we're working in the games. Reward yourself with a victory. I'm optimistic that it's coming soon.
Derek Kellogg on the many missed three pointers
It's made it very difficult. We shoot threes, and I think we have very good three point shooters. Although our percentages at times tell us otherwise. And when you're not knocking them down they can really pack things in. I thought they did a better job in the first half of packing it. I thought it the second half we did a better job of spreading things out and getting in the paint. I would venture to guess we missed more open threes tonight than we have any game all year. But I'll have to watch the tape and see. I expect to see us make more threes. I'm not really a coach that is on top of guys for taking open shots, I'm actually more like "shoot the ball". There was one in the first half that I thought Ricky was open that he passed up. I'm like "you're one of the best three point shooters in the league, maybe in the country why are you passing it up". I'm expecting that they're going to make those. So I guess 18 games in we've got to have a run here where we make some shots.
Coach Kellogg on Ricky's mental game
Ricky and I have spent a lot of time together as of late. I want to make sure he realizes how important he is to the team. Like what I need out of him and what I expect out of him. I want him to play loose and free, that's when he's at his best. This happens a lot of times with seniors on teams that are struggle a little bit. He's trying to find his way. And I'm trying to be with him every step of it and make sure we're on the same page. I need him to play great every night, is the reality of it. Our only senior, really one of the only guys that's been through this.
MHERST - Even a home game against a team that had been bad on the road was not enough to halt the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's losing streak Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
Freddie Riley's would-be, game-winning 3-pointer was off the mark at the buzzer and St. Bonaventure beat the Minutemen 70-69.
It was the second shot in the final minute that Riley, who was not nearly as accurate from long range as he had been in recent games, did not hit. With UMass trailing by a point and under a minute left, Ricky Harris fed Riley at the top of the key but the freshman missed and the Bonnies got the rebound.
St. Bonaventure wound the clock down to 10 seconds before Michael Davenport missed a shot from the corner. David Gibbs grabbed the rebound with eight seconds left and got the ball to Harris who raced into the frontcourt.
The senior drove into the lane, but drew defenders and passed up the shot, instead getting the ball to Riley, who was open in the right corner. The crowd of 3,121 inhaled as one as the shot went up, but it was off line.
It was the fourth straight loss for the Minutemen (7-11, 1-4 Atlantic 10) and the first road win of the season for the Bonnies (9-8, 2-2 A-10).
"I wanted to push and see if I had a layup," Harris said. "I saw the guy that was guarding Freddie come over to try to stop my penetration. I saw Freddie wide open. He's a great shooter. I have confidence in him. I kicked it out to him and he shot a 3."
Riley knew he'd missed when it left his hands.
"When it came out of my hands I kind of knew it as going to be short. I was wide open," Riley said. "I should have made it. But unfortunately I missed and we lost the game."
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said he thought his team was in good shape when Riley took the shot.
"I had all the confidence that that ball was going in. I was very surprised when it didn't," Kellogg said.
The Minutemen will try to snap their streak in their final nonconference game at 4 p.m. Saturday at No. 25 Baylor.
"It's real frustrating," Harris said. "Every day we come out in practice and work hard. We just can't find a way to close out games.
"But we have a good group of guys here," Harris added. "None of us are starting to go our separate ways. Hopefully we're going to find a way to get this rolling."
The Bonnies led by 10 midway through the second half before Kellogg went to a lineup with one big man and four perimeter players down the stretch, using full-court pressure to frustrate the St. Bonaventure guards. Harris scored 11 of his team-high 22 points in the final 10 minutes to bring the Minutemen back.
"When we played a little smaller and a little faster we were able to create tempo," Kellogg said. "I thought we were in good shape to win the game."
Harris hit a driving layup with two minutes, 52 seconds left to cut St. Bonaventure's lead to 68-66. Javorn Farrell dove to steal the inbounds pass and passed the ball from the floor to Riley (12 points).
Riley put the ball up, but it seemed to slip out of his hand and fluttered over the hoop. Harris caught it high in the air and dunked it to tie the game 68-68 with 2:38 remaining.
Andrew Nicholson, who led St. Bonaventure with 26 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots, had been quiet for much of the second half until he drew a foul from Sean Carter with 1:45 left.
The sophomore made both free throws to give St. Bonaventure back the lead. Anthony Gurley (16 points) drove and was fouled at the other end, but made only one of two free throws to make it 70-69 and set up the final sequence.
Nicholson carried the Bonnies in the first half. Sean Carter and Hashim "Big City" Bailey had some success for UMass slowing him down early, but both picked up two fouls trying to guard him.
The Minutemen were forced to play seldom-used reserve Matt Hill for seven minutes and Nicholson took advantage with 15 points, five rebounds and four blocks before intermission.

MHERST - Familiar surroundings did little to help the 3-point shooting woes for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team as its season-long struggles from behind the arc continued Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
The Minutemen missed 20 of their 24 3-point tries. The 16.7 percent shooting marked the fourth time this season UMass has been under 20 percent from long range.
Opponents have started to crowd the lane, giving UMass more and more open looks.
"It's made it very difficult. I think we have good 3-point shooters, but our percentages at times tell us otherwise," coach Derek Kellogg said. "When you're not knocking them down, they can really pack things in.
"I would guess we missed more open 3s than we have in any game all year," Kellogg added about Wednesday's 70-69 loss to St. Bonaventure.
Ricky Harris, who has been among the slumping shooters, agreed.
"A lot of teams are starting to play a packed defense and clog the lane up," he said. "When we drive you see a lot of teams converging in.
"We do 3-point shooting every day in practice," Harris added. "It's just basically us raising up and shooting with confidence. We have shooters. We just have to start making some."
Kellogg remained optimistic.
"I expect to see us make more 3s," he said. "Eighteen games in, we need to have a run where we knock down some shots."
LOSING STREAK - The four-game losing streak is now the second longest in Kellogg's tenure as coach. UMass lost five straight from Nov. 12 to Dec. 6, 2008.
YOUNG BIG MEN - It was the third time in the last four games that one of the Atlantic 10's young big men has put up big numbers against the Minutemen.
La Salle freshman Aaric Murray started the trend with 18 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots on Jan. 10 in an 80-74 win over UMass. Three days later, Richmond sophomore Darrius Garrett had eight points, 13 rebounds and 14 blocked shots in a 70-63 overtime victory against the Minutemen.
Andrew Nicholson, last year's A-10 freshman of the year, became the next young center to damage UMass inside with 26 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots on Wednesday.
NOTES - UMass is offering general admission tickets for the rest of its weekend home games for $6.
Junior Anthony Gurley turns 22 on Thursday.

heres no 3-point shot Freddie Riley is afraid to take.
Massachusetts mens basketball coach Derek Kellogg is just as confident in his freshman, even with the game on the line. But no matter how sure Kellogg (or any of the other Minutemen) were that one of Rileys two potential game-winning shots was going to go in, mind wasnt over matter, and St. Bonaventure squeaked out a 70-69 win.
Rileys second shot came at the buzzer on a pass from senior Ricky Harris who passed up an opportunity of his own in hopes that his wide-open teammate would convert.
Hes a great shooter. Ive got confidence in him, Harris said, who finished with a game-high of 22 points.
UMass (7-11, 1-4 Atlantic 10) climbed back from a 10-point deficit in the second half to tie the game with 2 minutes, 36 seconds left. However, center Sean Carter fouled the Bonnies leading scorer, Andrew Nicholson (26 points, seven rebounds, five blocks), who converted both free-throw attempts.
The forward then fouled guard Anthony Gurley on the next possession, who made 1-of-2 from the line.
The Minutemen then went scoreless until they called a 30-second timeout. When play resumed, Riley took a 3-pointer at the top of the key, which fell short. His second opportunity came after guard David Gibbs rebounded SBU guard Michael Davenports missed shot from beyond the arc, which turned into Rileys second attempt at winning the game.
We missed on some little things that were going to work on that I thought was the difference in the game, Kellogg said on his teams loss.
It was a back-and-forth affair the entire first half with the lead changing eight times, but SBU had a three-point lead going into the locker room by controlling second chance points, 11-6. Nicholson made an impact early with 15 points and four blocks in the first half.
UMass tried to counter from beyond the arc, but ended up 1-of-12.
The first time the Bonnies (9-8, 2-2 A-10) led by more than three was almost five minutes into the second half when Chris Matthews rebounded Harriss missed layup and set Michael Davenport up for a fast break basket at the other end.
SBU led by its biggest margin of 10 points with 9:58 to go in the game, but quickly saw it shrink following a 7-0 run with five of those points by Harris.
Just as things started to turn up for the Minutemen, they found themselves in trouble once again when Matthews set up another fast break layup for Malcolm Eleby to make the game 59-54 with 8:44 to go.
The Bonnies built their lead back up to seven by the four minute mark, but UMass went on another 7-0 run. This time, it was to tie the game for the first time all half.
We always thought we were going to pull it out because every day in practice when we scrimmage, we do end-of-game situations where one team is down eight points with three minutes to go so we always know were going to win, but it just didnt go our way, Riley said of his teams ability to come back from a deficit.
Despite the teams frustration with losing four straight games, Harris said nobody has given up because of how Kellogg believes in his players. But hes been doing everything he can to keep that losing to a minimum by shooting jumpers well after practice ends.
The Minutemens next game will be against the third ranked opponent theyve played this season, No. 25 Baylor, on Jan. 23. UMass hasnt beaten a ranked opponent in either game against Michigan State or Temple.
Game Notes:
The loss was UMass first at the Mullins Center since the home opener on Nov. 18 when it dropped to Cornell, 74-61. The Minutemen are now 5-2 in Amherst.

ome teams live by it, others die by it.
For the Massachusetts basketball team, its been a staple of their success the past few seasons, as senior guard Ricky Harris is fourth in career 3-point shots made (240) and third in career 3-pointers attempted (682) in UMass history, even surpassing UMass coach Derek Kellogg.
However, the long ball has not found its way into the bottom of the net as of late for not only Harris, but for the rest of the Minutemen, who made just 4-of-24 shots from beyond the arc in a 70-69 loss to St. Bonaventure Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
Freshman guard Freddie Riley, known for his scoring ability, especially from long range, took the most important 3-pointer of his young career in the closing seconds of the game. But the shot was short, as Riley finished the night just 2-for-8 from the 3-point line, while Harris made only two 3-point shots on eight attempts.
Four other UMass players attempted 3-point shots, but freshman forward Terrell Vinson (0-for-2), redshirt junior guard Anthony Gurley (0-for-4), junior guard Gary Correia (0-for-2) and freshman forward Sampson Carter (0-for-2) were not able to score from beyond the arc.
Like other opponents UMass has faced recently, the Bonnies were effective in forcing the Minutemen to take open shots from the 3-point line by collapsing in the middle of the lane, preventing players from getting easy lay-ups. UMass, however, was unable to knock down shots from deep, a problem that has plagued them in their past four contests.
We do 3-point shooting everyday in practice, for the majority of practice, Harris said. We shoot the ball, its basically just us raising up and shooting the ball with confidence, being able to stand up there and knock down shots, and thats just something that we have to do so that teams can respect our 3-point ball, because we have shooters all across the ball, we just have to start making them.
Riley was impressive from 3-point range in losses to Richmond and Temple Jan. 13 and last Saturday, going 7-for-14 in both games, including a 6-of-14 performance en route to 22 points in a loss to La Salle Jan. 20. In that three-game stretch, Harris was just 2-of-17 from beyond the arc, and is just 4-of-23 in his last four games, all loses to Atlantic 10 opponents.
Riley is second to Harris in 3-point attempts with 104, and is second on the team with a .375 average, but leads the team with 39 3-pointers made, good for a 2.8 average. Harris is second with 32 for an average of 1.8 per game.
Against opponents so far this season, UMass has a .304 3-point shooting percentage, while opponents have a .366 mark, but the Minutemen average 6.9 3-point field goals made per game, compared to opponents (6.6).
UMass coach Derek Kellogg felt that his teams struggle with making 3-point shots has made it difficult to do other things on the offensive side of the ball.
Its made it very difficult, we shoot threes, and I think we have good 3-point shooters, although our percentages, you know, at times tell us otherwise, Kellogg said.
I would venture to guess that we missed more open threes tonight than we have pretty much all year, but I will have to watch the tape and see.
Kellogg wants to see his team continue to take threes, and to not pass up open shots, but also wants the Minutemen to start knocking them down in order to win games and stop their four-game losing skid.
