Minutemen head to Philly to face St. Joseph’s
By Adam Miller, Massachusetts Daily Collegian Staff, 1/26/2010

Call it a cliché, but the Massachusetts men’s basketball team is only thinking about tonight’s game against Saint Joseph’s.

Then again, when a team loses five straight games, it has to worry about winning one game before it can look ahead. UMass (7-12, 1-4 Atlantic 10) is looking to turn its season around against the Hawks (7-11, 2-3 A-10), who had their own struggles this year, but who are starting to turn things around.

St. Joe’s is currently on a three-game winning streak, beating Towson, Dayton and Penn. UMass men’s basketball coach Derek Kellogg believes the Hawks’ win over the Flyers, who were pre-season favorites to win the A-10, proves that they are tougher than their record indicates.

“They’re playing better,” Kellogg said. “They have a good view of how they’re playing and they’ve got a couple guys that have been around a little while to make it easier on the young guys.”

If there’s anything Kellogg and Co. can take comfort in, it’s the fact that SJU is nothing like No. 25 Baylor. The Hawks are a guard-oriented team with senior Darrin Govens leading the team in scoring (12.9 points per game).

The Bears featured a frontline of three players 6-foot-10 or taller and caused problems inside with their size. UMass finished the game 24.2 percent from the field.

The forward who caused the most problems for the Minutemen was Ekpe Udoh (23 points, seven blocks). His presence forced the guards who were used to driving to the lane to take more outside shots because of his length.

“That is a nice guy to pick up as a transfer,” Kellogg said following the 71-45 loss to Baylor. “I mean, as much as anything, he dominates the game just by being out there. His presence is what really separates him.”

The Hawks aren’t going to give UMass nearly as much trouble inside as the Bears did. Center Todd O’Brien (6-11) is the only player taller than 6-foot-7 to average at least 20 minutes a game.

Kellogg said he looks forward to playing St. Joseph’s because he is more comfortable having his team play against a smaller, quicker team than a team with a lot of size.

“They have to play fast, we’re going to play fast and I kind of like coaching that way,” Kellogg said. “I think it’s a fun way to play and it’s a fun way to coach.”

The Minutemen have a similar style to the Hawks because of their guard trio consisting of Ricky Harris, Anthony Gurley and Freddie Riley. All of them average at least 10 points per game and can push the ball up the floor.

UMass is also hoping to capitalize against its smaller opponent on the boards. Against Baylor, the Minutemen finished with a 42-33 advantage.

However, Kellogg’s team has not done as good of a job with second chance points as he would like. Despite finishing with 22 offensive rebounds, the Maroon and White totaled six second-chance points.

Kellogg believes that the Minutemen’s shots will start to fall once again as soon as they become more confident in themselves.

“The one thing about shooters is that you want them to stay confident,” Kellogg said. “I’m trying to instill in them that the next one’s going to go down, don’t worry about the last shot and I have a good feeling that once we make a few and get on a little run here, the balls are going to start falling the way they’re supposed to.”

Minutemen hope to pounce on tired Hawks
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/27/2010

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team will play a Saint Joseph's team tonight at Hagan Arena that is either energized by its recent success after a disappointing start, or a Hawk squad that is exhausted by playing its third game in five days.

Head Hawk Phil Martelli said both would be a factor when the Minutemen (7-12, 1-4 Atlantic 10) play his team at 7 p.m.

"Seeing the players feeling better about themselves is a plus and one we've been trying to build on," Martelli said during Monday's Atlantic 10 coaches conference call.

"I'm very cognizant of guys getting tired. We'll shorten our practice sessions," he added. "I've asked the players to recognize proper amounts of sleep and how to eat on game days and things like that. There'll be no change in terms of player minutes or rotations."

Martelli canceled the shoot-around for today to avoid burning out his players' legs before the game.

Saint Joseph's has won three straight games for the first time all season. Monday night's 85-64 win over Pennsylvania at the Palestra was St. Joe's first road win this season, although the Palestra was the Hawks' home gym in 2008-09, while Alumni Fieldhouse was expanded into Hagan Arena.

"I feel better playing at home," Martelli said. "We've played reasonably well at home."

The Minutemen have played reasonably well in some road games lately, but have yet to earn a victory in the opponent's gym. (Their 84-63 win over Holy Cross at the DCU Center in Worcester on Dec. 5 was technically a neutral-site game).

UMass would take a win anywhere at this point as they arrived in Philadelphia on a five-game losing streak, matching the longest drought under coach Derek Kellogg.

"We've been in a ton of close games. We're right on the cusp of winning some of these games," he said. "I think we're growing a little. They listen and they follow through.

"The first step is getting your team to play hard," Kellogg added. "The next step is to get them to think the game more and then the next step is to figure out how to win. That's what we're starting to do."

The Hawks are 8-11 (2-3 overall) after Monday's win. They opened the season with three straight wins, but lost six straight after that, a swoon that stretched to nine losses in 10 games before they bounced back.

"I've enjoyed watching them. Coach has done a fantastic job coaching that team from the beginning of the year #til now. He's done a good job adapting to his players," Kellogg said. "They're fast and quick and shooting a lot of 3s.

"They're probably one of the more improved teams in the league from the beginning of the year until now and that's a testament to coach and what's he's been able to do," he added. "It's going to be a tough game. At home they're a very, very good team. When they make 3s they're a very, very tough opponent."

Kellogg said he plans to play fast, but not because Saint Joseph's players may be fatigued.

"We're going to play how we play and push tempo," he said. "Traveling from Waco back probably compensates a little for them playing so many games in so many nights."

Darrin Govens leads the Hawks with 12.9 points per game. Not far behind is versatile Garrett Williamson, who has averaged 11.3 points and a team-best 3.58 assists per game.

St. Joseph's was hard to rebound against in previous years with Ahmad Nivins leading the Hawks' front line. Without him, the Minutemen will try to take advantage of St. Joseph's woes on the glass.

UMass became the first team to outrebound Baylor but still lost 71-45 on Saturday, The Hawks have been outrebounded by 8.8 boards per game, the worst margin in the A-10.

NOTES - Ricky Harris needs to make three 3-pointers to match Carmelo Travieso, whose 245 career 3s puts him third all-time at UMass.

Second Half Run Leads UMass Over Saint Joe's, 87-80
Baltimore duo of Harris and Vinson combine for 39 points
From UMass Athletics, 1/27/2010

PHILADELPHIA - In a game of runs, UMass used a 15-2 run midway through the second half keyed by Freddie Riley 3-pointers to win at Saint Joseph's newly-refurbished Hagan Arena, 87-80 on Wednesday night. Riley (14) was one of three UMass players to score in double-figures. Ricky Harris led the way with 23 points while Terrell Vinson had 16. UMass (8-12, 2-4 A-10) had a season-best 11 different scorers in the game.

Saint Joseph's (8-12, 2-4) was led by Garrett Williamson's 16 points, while Idris Hilliard added 14.

UMass was dominant on the glass, outrebounding the Hawks 44-31, led by Vinson and Sean Carter with nine each and Harris, who had a career-high eight boards.

After UMass had built a lead of 12 several times midway through the first half, Saint Joseph's used a 17-4 run bridging the first and second half to regain the lead at 42-41 on a 3-point play by Darren Govens with 18:39 left in the second half. That started a game of back-and-forth early in the second half as the game stood tied at 49 on a Riley 3-pointer with 15:54 left.

Saint Joseph's than answered with a 7-0 run of its own to retake the lead at 56-54 with 13:02 left in the second, forcing Derek Kellogg to call timeout. Riley then bombed a pair of 3-pointers sandwiched around a Sean Carter alley-oop dunk to give UMass a 62-56 edge with 11:22 left in the second half.

UMass continued its 15-2 run with lay-ups by Harris and Vinson to take a 69-58 lead with 9:13 left in the game. Of course the Hawks answered with a run of 9-2 to cut the lead to 71-67 with 5:07 left.

But in the final five minutes, UMass was able to withstand the Hawks as Saint Joseph's missed several key free throws. The Minutemen were clutch down the stretch as SJU began fouling early. UMass made 12-of-14 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

UMass took its first lead of the game with a 9-0 run midway in the first half. Gurley's putback lay-up with 7:36 gave the Minutemen a 22-20 advantage as UMass rallied from a 20-14 deficit with 10:28 left.

Vinson made UMass's first 3-pointer to balloon the Minutemen's advantage to eight points at 30-22 with 5:13 left in the first. Harris then bombed his first trey to extend the lead to 33-22 and wrap up a 19-2 run with 4:37 on the clock.

Saint Joseph's ended the first half on a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to 39-37 at intermission as Williamson got a nice roll on a lay-up at the buzzer.

UMass finally returns home, and it's the second straight Saturday game televised on ESPNU as the Minutemen host Charlotte on Jan. 30 at 6 p.m.

Minutemen snap losing streak
By David Brinch, Massachusetts Daily Collegian Staff, 1/28/2010

Players from the Charm City stepped up big Wednesday night in the City of Brotherly Love.

Behind huge performances from Baltimore natives Ricky Harris and Terrell Vinson, the Massachusetts basketball team defeated Saint Joseph’s, 87-80, snapping its five-game losing streak while winning its first Atlantic 10 road game of the season.

“I thought we did a nice job of sharing the basketball,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “You know, if a guy got hot, we did a great job of really moving it and getting them involved, and we had some guys step up tonight.”

The Minutemen (8-12-2-4 A-10) used a 15-2 second half run to get away from the Hawks (8-12, 2-4 A-10), who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of Harris and Riley, who combined for 39 points and 17 rebounds in the game.

Along with Harris (23 points, career-high eight rebounds) and Vinson (16 points, nine rebounds), redshirt junior Anthony Gurley added 10 points, while freshman guard Freddie Riley netted 14, and the Minutemen had a season-best 11 scorers in the game.

“I thought Ricky played a great game, Freddie Riley made some shots in the second half, and I think Terrell was very, very good,” Kellogg said.

UMass continued to dominate opponents on the glass, outrebounding SJU 44-31, as redshirt sophomore Sean Carter added nine rebounds and six points. The Minutemen also found their shot, going 47.6 percent from the field and 8-of-21 from 3-point range. Riley went 4-for-8 from beyond the arc, while the rest of the team hit just four other 3-pointers, including Harris, who was 1-for-3. Harris went 8-for-10 from the line, while the Minutemen went 19-of-25 from the charity stripe.

The Hawks were led by senior guard Garrett Williamson, who had 16 points, 10 assists and three blocks, while junior forward Idris Hilliard had 14 points and six rebounds.

Midway through the first half, the Minutemen built a lead of 12 points several times, but the Hawks stormed back, going on a 17-4 run to regain the lead early on in the second half, 42-41, with a three-point play from Darrin Govens.

Later on, Riley hit a 3-pointer, but the Hawks came back with a run of their own, scoring seven straight points, going up 56-54. UMass again answered with a pair of 3-pointers from Riley and a Carter dunk, putting the Minutemen up by seven points.

The Hawks came back, cutting the deficit to four, but missed a number of opportunities at the foul line, while the Minutemen sunk 12-of-14 free throw shots late in the game to secure the A-10 road contest.

“We were able to withstand their runs because we actually shared the ball, played good defense, and rebounded,” Kellogg said. “They made some good runs in the first half when they knocked down 3’s.”

SJU was 4-of-9 from beyond the arc in the first half, but were just 2-of-10 in the second half.

The Minutemen return to the Mullins Center for the first time in more than a week to take on Charlotte, Saturday at 6 p.m. This will be the second-straight week that UMass will be featured on ESPNU.

“We needed this win bad, and now we need to get the win on Saturday and put two wins together and start rolling,” Vinson said.

'Rocky' inspires Minuteman win in Philly
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/28/2010

PHILADELPHIA - In hopes of inspiring his struggling team, University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg took his players to the Philadelphia Museum of Art Wednesday afternoon to run up the steps made famous in the inspirational scene of the movie "Rocky."

The boxing connection proved appropriate as hours later the Minutemen and Saint Joseph's alternated scoring runs like prizefighters trading rounds with neither team delivering a knockout blow.

And like in the 1978 Oscar winner for best picture, the Philadelphia entry came out on the losing end as UMass snapped its losing streak with the 87-80 win at Hagan Arena. It was the first true road win of the season for the Minutemen.

"I'll take the win," Kellogg said. "I thought our guys played a complete 40-minute game where they said #We're going to win this one.'"

The final run was a 10-4 UMass surge that included six points, two rebounds and a blocked shot by freshman Terrell Vinson, who had 16 points and nine rebounds before fouling out. It put the Minutemen up 79-69 with 1 minute, 25 seconds left in the game.

UMass (8-12, 2-4 Atlantic 10) made enough free throws down the stretch to hold on.

"We stayed composed and stuck with our game plan," senior Ricky Harris said. "We shared the ball and played as a team today. Everybody did their part."

Harris had 23 points (8-for-10 from the free-throw line) and eight rebounds.

Freddie Riley added 14 points for the Minutemen, Anthony Gurley scored 10 and Sean Carter contributed six points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

"I went four or five games where I didn't give us anything," Carter said. "I focused a lot getting ready for these games. When I play well, we have a good chance of winning."

All 11 Minutemen who played scored in the game for the first time all season.

Garrett Williamson had 16 points and 10 assists for the Hawks (8-12, 2-4 A-10), which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

UMass looked sharp early as Harris and Vinson led a 19-2 run that put the Minutemen up 37-25 with 3:46 left in the first half.

But soon after, Vinson picked up his second foul sending him to the bench until intermission and UMass was not the same without him.

The Minutemen led by 10 when Vinson left the game. But the Hawks finished the half on a 12-2 run to narrow their halftime deficit to 39-37.

The Minutemen return home Saturday for a 6 p.m. game against Charlotte at the Mullins Center.

After the game, Harris sang the instrumental "Gonna Fly Now" theme from "Rocky."

"They turned the #Rocky' music on and we ran up the steps," said Harris, who was relieved to win. "That felt real good. We finally got a win. We finally got our confidence up and made a lot of shots today. I hope we can carry this over to the Charlotte game."

Vinson rescues Minutemen
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/28/2010

PHILADELPHIA - With 6 minutes, 16 seconds left in the 87-80 win by the University of Massachusetts over Saint Joseph's Wednesday night, the Hawks had scored seven straight points and regained momentum as the Hagan Arena crowd came to life.

With the Minuteman in desperate need of a win, freshman forward Terrell Vinson took control.

He put back a Sean Carter miss to bring the lead back to six and then blocked Idris Hilliard's layup attempt at the other end.

After Bryant Irwin cut the Hawks' deficit back to four, Vinson hit a baseline jumper.

Off a turnover by Hilliard, Vinson took the ball inside and was fouled. He made both free throws to increase the lead to 75-67.

Just over a minute later, Vinson snared the rebound from Todd O'Brien's missed free throw and the air seemed to come out of the Hawks.

Vinson fouled out a short time later, but he made his impact.

"It was mental. I've been getting in the gym going hard every day," Vinson said. "It's starting to pick up."

Fellow big man Sean Carter praised his rookie teammate.

"He's coming along now. He's figuring it out now and he's starting to rise up," Carter said. "He's helping us a lot."

Senior Ricky Harris agreed.

"He's been playing real well for a freshman," Harris said. "I'm real proud of him. He was smart and made plays and got to the free-throw line."

UMass coach Derek Kellogg said he liked Vinson's aggressiveness.

"Terrell Vinson was very good. He's asserting himself now as a player and not worrying what year he is in school," Kellogg said. "I gave him a lot of latitude there at the end to give him the ball and let him make plays. He's capable and he responded as well as he could have."

HILL CONTRIBUTES - Matt Hill scored for the first time in five games and for just the third time this season as he matched his career high with four points, all on free throws. He's 6-for-6 from the line this season including two with 47.4 seconds left as the Minutemen were clinging to a seven-point lead.

"All in all he gave us some quality minutes," Kellogg said. "He's a non-mistake guy. He's a guy who is going to be where he's supposed to be. He brings a great attitude. When opportunity presents itself this year he's done a great job taking on the challenge."

NEXT UP - The Minutemen return home for a game at 6 p.m. Saturday against Charlotte at the Mullins Center which will be televised on ESPNU. The 49ers are 15-5 and tied for first place in the Atlantic 10 after beating Temple 74-64 Wednesday.

HARRIS REBOUNDS - Harris had a career-high eight rebounds to go with his 23 points.

HAGAN ARENA - It was the first game for UMass in St. Joseph's newly renovated home gym. Now called Hagan Arena, it holds 1,000 more fans (4,200) than it did when it was Alumni Fieldhouse.

Among the 4,051 in attendance Wednesday were Harris' mother and grandmother who made the trip from Baltimore wearing No. 5 UMass jerseys.

FAMILIAR FACES - Wednesday was the second straight game for the Minutemen against a team with a former UMass assistant coach on its staff. Tim Maloney, associate coach under former head coach Travis Ford, is on the Baylor staff.

Geoff Arnold, an assistant to ex-coach Bruiser Flint, is on Phil Martelli's staff at St. Joseph's.

UMass earlier this season also faced Craig Carter, who is on the Rutgers staff. He was an assistant to former Minuteman coach Steve Lappas.

Hawks outgunned in fast-paced game
By Ray Parrillo, Philadelphia Inquirer Staff Writer, 1/28/2010

St. Joseph's coach Phil Martelli likes to call basketball a game of numbers, and with his team short of firepower, he loathes games when the score is in the 80s.

High-scoring games usually mean trouble for the Hawks, and that was illustrated last night when Massachusetts outscored St. Joseph's, 87-80, in an Atlantic Ten Conference game at Hagan Arena.

Each team took turns making runs, and the Minutemen (8-12, 2-4 A-10) went on two scoring binges that ultimately sent St. Joe's (8-12, 2-4) down to defeat, ending the Hawks' three-game winning streak.

Todd O'Brien, who had 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting in the first half, got the Hawks off to a quick start before UMass went on an eight-minute tear, outscoring St. Joe's, 19-2, to build a 33-22 lead.

The Hawks were reeling. While the Minutemen were scoring almost at will, St. Joe's was going more than four minutes without a field goal. His team down by 11, Martelli called a time-out to staunch the bleeding. The strategy worked. The Hawks chipped away at the deficit until Garrett Williamson closed the half by following his own miss to pull St. Joe's within 39-37 at the break. Williamson finished the game with 16 points.

As usual, Williamson drew the most difficult assignment on defense. He was matched against senior guard Ricky Harris, who went into the game averaging 17.2 ppg. Harris had one basket before Williamson went to the bench for a breather, then he added two quick field goals. A long three-pointer by Harris gave UMass its biggest lead, at 33-22, before St. Joe's began its comeback. Harris finished with 23 points.

The Hawks had won their three previous games even though their leading scorer, senior guard Darrin Govens, shot 11 for 38 (28.9 percent), including 8 for 30 (26.6 percent) from three-point distance. Govens' struggle continued through the first half, when he missed four of five shots.

As they have been in most of their games this season, the Hawks were up against a superior rebounding team. UMass led the A-10 with an average of 15.2 offensive rebounds a game. Even though the Minutemen ranked 11th in the 14-team A-10 in rebounding margin, their margin was still an average of 8.4 more boards a game than St. Joe's, which ranks last in the conference with a margin of minus-12.

At the break, UMass had a 20-13 rebounding advantage.

The Minutemen, who went into the game 0-7 on the road, were playing their fourth road game in the last five. They had not won since a 78-76 win over Fordham on Jan. 6. Two of their more recent losses came against teams ranked in the top 25 - Temple and Baylor.

Massive letdown for Saint Joseph's in loss to UMass
By Ed Barkowitz, Philadelphia Daily News Staff Writer, 1/28/2010

THERE WAS a sequence at the end of last night's Saint Joseph's game that really summed up the contest.

The Hawks, down six, had stolen an inbounds pass and had a good look at a three-pointer that would have cut the lead in half. Darrin Govens' shot didn't go in and neither did Garrett Williamson's ensuing layup off a rebound. A scrum followed that ended with a Massachusetts player getting fouled.

As the bodies untangled, Williamson lay on the floor, slapping the hardwood at the missed opportunity.

UMass, on the strength of a long run in each half, ended St. Joe's modest three-game winning streak with an entertaining, 87-80 win at Hawk Hill last night.

"We had too many empty possessions - at both ends of the floor," Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli said.

The Hawks looked sluggish for extended periods, and the Minutemen took full advantage with a 16-2 spurt in the first half and a 15-2 run in the second. Williamson refused to point to the fact that St. Joe's was playing its third game in 5 days.

"Down the stretch, you have to lock it in," the senior said. "The last 4 minutes, you have to suck it up. You've got tomorrow off. You can make excuses for us, but I'm not making any excuses."

Williamson stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, 10 assists, six steals and three blocks. He played a game-high 38 minutes and committed zero turnovers.

Govens, the Hawks' leading scorer, struggled again from the field, going 4-for-11 for nine points. Martelli can live with the slump, but he's not happy with the other mistakes his senior guard is making.

"I'm much more concerned with the four turnovers," Martelli said. "That's not good basketball for one of your older guys."

Overall, St. Joe's committed only 10 turnovers, but too often were guilty of quick shots. The Hawks also let UMass get loose in the second half from beyond the arc. Led by freshman Freddie Riley, who hit all four of his threes after intermission, the Minutemen hit six of 11 from distance in the second half.

The Hawks also were abysmal at the free-throw line (12-for-20), particularly in the second half, when they missed as many as they made, including a few front ends of one-and-ones.

"And then you walk to the foul line and shoot 7-for-14 at home [in the second half]," Martelli observed. "That's a formula for disaster. A formula for disaster, really."

Idris Hilliard chipped in 14 points, and Todd O'Brien added 12 and eight rebounds for the Hawks (8-12, 2-4 Atlantic 10). Ricky Harris led UMass (also 8-12, 2-4) with 23, while Terrell Vinson added 16 and nine boards. Riley had 14 points.

Generally, Martelli's teams play better as the season drags on. Last night was the exception. He pointed out afterward that UMass was 1-10 when scoring fewer than 70 points. The Hawks allowed 87.

"What will really hurt the most is if we don't get better from this," Williamson said. "If we hang our heads, that will really hurt. Damn, it's disappointing."
