he Massachusetts men�s basketball team will look to do something they have not yet done this season.
Fresh off their first victory after dropping their last five games, the Minutemen (8-12, 2-4 Atlantic 10) host Charlotte Saturday night, returning to the Mullins Center for the first time since Jan. 20 in hopes of winning their first back-to-back A-10 games of the season.
The game is slated for a 6 p.m. tipoff and will be televised on ESPNU.
�Well it�s great when your team is on TV, and the fans come out and it looks a certain way on national television,� UMass coach Derek Kellogg said.
�You don�t want to have an empty arena, you need to have a student section that�s cheering and really going for your team, so that way, it will help in recruiting, just the overall image of your program, and we need the support of the students and the fans in the area to make it look a certain way for television.�
Like UMass, the 49ers (15-5, 5-1 A-10) are coming off of a big victory, downing No. 15 Temple Wednesday night, 74-64. Guard Derrio Green scored 26 points against the Owls, who were in the midst of a six-game winning streak, including a win over the Minutemen on Jan. 16, 76-64.
�For Charlotte to beat a top 15 team and do it in a sort of fashion where at times they looked like the better team is a testament to how they have been able to build and have their team where they are,� Kellogg said.
The 49ers also beat Louisville, 87-65, back on Dec. 5.
It was Green�s third game with 20 or more points against a Top 20 team this season, as Kellogg knows how dangerous he can be.
�When he gets going, they are as good as any team we�ve seen this year,� Kellogg said.
Along with Green, junior forward Shamari Spears has averaged 19.3 points and 7.7 rebounds in victories over the Owls, La Salle and Richmond this week. The Boston College transfer is seventh in the A-10, averaging 16.6 points per game, while freshman Chris Braswell is fourth in the conference in rebounds (9.1).
UMass defeated Saint Joseph�s Wednesday night, 87-80, as senior guard Ricky Harris and freshman forward Terrell Vinson combined for 39 points and 17 rebounds, while a season-high 11 different players scored for the Minutemen.
�I was impressed that we were able to withstand some of Saint Joe�s runs and really continue to play our game,� Kellogg said.
The Minutemen also were strong on the glass, outrebounding the Hawks 44-31 while shooting 47.6 percent from the field. Along with Harris and Vinson, freshman forward Freddie Riley contributed off the bench and found his shot, scoring 14 points, including going 4-for-8 from beyond the arc and 5-for-12 from the field.
Charlotte is capable of converting on free throws, leading the conference with a .743 percentage and sits right behind the Minutemen in rebounding margin with a plus 3.5.
�They get to the free-throw line more than a lot of teams attempt, which is a goal a lot of teams have,� Kellogg said.
�They jam the ball inside, those guys are big and physical, they know how to create contact, and their guards can get in the paint and shoot the ball, so they are a really well-rounded team.�
Last season, the 49ers forced overtime and outscored the Minutemen for a 69-64 road win on Jan. 21. Harris had 19 points in the game, while redshirt junior forward Anthony Gurley added 10 points.
�They�re much different, they had some injuries last year, Spears was sitting out as a transfer from Boston College, and Braswell was a prep-school guy at Hargraves with Freddie, and the main pieces they have are either new guys or guys that have improved tremendously,� Kellogg said.
The Owls, the 49ers, and Xavier are now in a three-way tie for first place in the conference with a 5-1 record.

MHERST - University of Massachusetts senior guard Ricky Harris said Wednesday's win over Saint Joseph's can be the start of something, but only if the basketball team uses it correctly.
"We have to stay focused. With this team we feel like we won the national championship," Harris said. "We have to stay focused, continue to work hard in practice and build off of what we did. There's stuff we can still improve on. We had a lot of mental mistakes and turnovers that led to baskets for them."
The Minutemen (8-12, 2-4 Atlantic 10) will try to keep that focus at 6 p.m. Saturday against Charlotte. While UMass was holding off the Hawks 87-80 on Wednesday, the 49ers were upsetting No. 15 Temple 74-64.
Harris said he sees Saturday's game as an opportunity.
"They're on a high right now. They just beat a top-25 team and they're better than they've been in previous years," he said. "If we can get this win, hopefully it can change our whole momentum of the season. If we could get this one (Saturday) on national television it would be big.
"I feel like we're one of the best teams in this conference even if our record doesn't show it," Harris added. "We come out and compete hard. We have to learn how to finish."
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said he thinks his team gained momentum from Wednesday's win.
"I think they're going to carry over because we're starting to be more consistent even in practice," he said. "I'm hoping our guys have a little more confidence about them after playing well the other night.
"Obviously Charlotte is one of the top teams in the league so something might not come quite as easy," he added. "I'm anticipating that we're going to play hard and compete. I'm hoping we play well."
Charlotte arrives in Amherst on a four-game winning streak and is at 15-5 (5-1 Atlantic 10), well exceeding the seventh-in-the-league ranking the 49ers received in the A-10 preseason poll. Charlotte has gotten a big lift from three newcomers. Junior Shamari Spears, a transfer from Boston College, has been one of the conference's best new players. The 6-foot-6 forward has averaged a team-high 16.9 points and 5.8 boards.
"He got in much better shape and he's playing with a hunger for the game," Kellogg said. "He's having a fantastic year."
Spears is joined in the frontcourt by 6-foot-8 freshman Chris Braswell, a candidate for A-10 rookie of the year who is averaging 10.2 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.
Sophomore Derrio Green, a transfer from Gulf Coast Community College, also has been an immediate factor. He is averaging 12.8 points per game and has been in double figures each of the last nine games.
Senior Dijuan Harris remains one of the conference's top point guards, averaging 4.2 assists per game to go with 8.9 points.
UMass and Charlotte are No. 1 and 2 in the conference, respectively, in rebounds per game.
"I want to be in the rebounding battle every game," Kellogg said. "This is a good challenge for us, because this is a very good rebounding team with two big physical guys" in Spears and Braswell.
UMass sophomore center Sean Carter said he is looking forward to the matchup.
"Both of their post players are playing really well this season," Carter said. "Charlotte is a good team. I like the competition. I've never shied away from it."
Charlotte has been much better at home (8-1) than on the road (5-4), but those four road losses have come against Duke, Tennessee, Xavier and Old Dominion.
KELLOGG VS. CANCER - Kellogg and his staff will be among many coaches around the country wearing sneakers with their suits during weekend games as part of the awareness-raising campaign for Coaches vs. Cancer.
"I have a brand new pair of adidas that I've been saving that I haven't even pulled out of the box yet," Kellogg said. "They look nice."
NOTES - The game will be televised on ESPNU, the Minutemen's second straight Saturday appearance on ESPN's college network. UMass is 1-3 in televised games this season.
As part of ESPN's Campus Connection week, WMUA's student radio broadcast of the game will be aired on ESPNU for part of the game.
Harris needs 21 points to become the sixth player in UMass history to reach 1,700 career points.

MHERST, Mass. - A key scoring run in each half by Charlotte and a career-high 34 points by Derrio Green led to a 72-58 loss for UMass against the 49ers on Saturday night at the Mullins Center. Ricky Harris led the home club with 25 points and four assists, while Anthony Gurley added 11. The Minutemen fell to 8-13 overall and 2-5 in the Atlantic 10, while the 49ers improved to 16-5 overall and 6-1 in the A-10.
Green shot 8-for-16 from 3-point range, tying a UMass opponent record for most field goals and attempts from behind the arc in a game. 21 of his 34 points came in the first half.
For the game, UMass shot 34 percent from the field, including 14 percent from 3-point range. Charlotte shot 42 percent from the field and 43 percent from beyond the arc. The Minutemen held the edge on the boards, led by Sean Carter's 10 and Terrell Vinson's eight, 44-39.
UMass trailed by one, 37-36, with 16 minutes left in the game, but the 49ers outscored the Minutemen, 21-5, over the next 10 minutes, including a stretch in which UMass went without a field goal for 8:37, to fall behind by 17, 58-51, with six minutes to go. The Minutemen managed to get the deficit back to single digits, 65-56, on a Harris 3-pointer with 1:33 left, but the visitors were able to make enough free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
It was back and forth early, as the teams traded leads four times in the opening four minutes, but the 49ers went on a 15-0 run in which they held the Minutemen scoreless for 6:26 to take a 21-9 lead at the midway point of the first half. Green led the run, draining three 3-pointers in a three-minute span.
Gurley pulled the Minutemen back into it by scoring six-straight points, making it 21-15, and Harris hit 3-pointers on back-to-back trips, pulling UMass within five, 26-21 with 4:39 to go in the half. The 49ers outscored the Minutemen, 8-5, over the final four minutes of the half to take a 34-26 lead into halftime.
Green was the story of the first half with 21 points on 5-for-10 shooting from behind the arc. Harris paced UMass with 10 points, while Charlotte outshot the Minutemen, 41 percent to 33 percent.
After the Charlotte lead reached 10 on the first field goal of the second half, the Minutemen went on a 10-1 run on five layups, the last two coming on Harris drives, to pull within one, 37-36, with 16:09 to go.
The Minutemen return to action on Wednesday when they host Xavier at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m. in a game that will be televised regionally on CBS College Sports.

Derek Kellogg game reaction:
First of all I would like to say I was 100% pleased with the atmosphere in the crowd, I thought that was great that everybody came out and supported the team. It actually gave us some sort of a home court advantage when we were making our run in the second half, they really got into the ball game, and I'm hoping that down the line we'll continue to have fan support and a crowd like that. It makes a difference, it truly makes a difference and its good for our players' and anybody interested in the university on TV to see that. That's my first comment on the game, is that the crowd was great, and I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of crowds like that in the future, that was fantastic. As far as the game goes, we played hard, we rebounded the ball, the one kid Green had a career night. He shot the ball well, I thought their team played well, played fantastic, and I thought we did some good things, where our basketball decisions were something we need to work on. We're a little bit of a work in progress, as these kids continue to learn what were trying to do were going to continue to get better.
Kellogg on Charlotte switching defenses in the second half:
I don't know because I thought they were playing a zone. We got on that run quite a bit, we didn't make outside shots. We were four for 28 from three. We shoot a lot of threes, and quite a few of those were in transition. I thought their zone was pretty good, they did a good job with it and like I said we have to make some better decisions against the zone. We've actually went against the zone more in the last week, I've made some changes more than I have as a player or a coach in a career, so were going to have to do a little bit more.
Kellogg on Javorn Farrell's play:
I thought he was great, his intensity level was higher than anybody in the game, you can put the Charlotte guys in that mix also. He really went after loose balls, he dove on the floor. Now its shooing up his basketball game a little bit as far as what he's trying to do. We were down ten at the end and he took the three from the corner and as I coaching tip I told him they were flying at you, you an okay three point shooter, drive the ball to the rim and get fouled, get to the free throw line and then give us a chance to set up our press. There's a lot of teaching tips going on out there. Especially when you're playing three and four freshman at different times during the game.
Kellogg on UMass making a comeback in the second half:
I believe if I'm not mistaken that Phil Jones hit three or four jump shots all in a row and we told our guys to play him halfway and he made some shots that I didn't envision on top.
UMass Ricky Harris on making a comeback and then struggling shooting:
It's tough because we shot the ball decent against St. Joe's and came out with a good win. Then we came home, felt confident, and it just didn't roll our favor. We can't keep saying that every week, but we just have to start shooting with confidence and raising up and knocking down shots.
Ricky Harris on Charlotte switching to zone defensively in the second half:
I don't think so, we wanted to attack the zone the same way we would attack them in a man-to-man. The way they played their zone was kind of weird. If you set a ball screen right there then basically this guy right here will play the shooter and leave the lane open. We could get in the lane whenever we wanted, it's just a matter of us finishing and making plays when we got in there.
Head Coach Bobby Lutz initial thoughts
It's a really good win. Watching the UMass game at St. Joe's I was really worried cause I thought the second half they played incredibly well, they shot the ball well and they were coming in with momentum coming in off that road win. Any road win in this league is a very good one. The same can be said for us. I was really pleased with our guys focus we got off to a good start, we knew how well they rebound the ball. They actually out rebounded us in the first half, second half we actually out rebounded them by a couple, they still out rebounded us for the game. We thought that was going to be a huge part of the game. I'm not happy with our turnovers, but give them credit, they just kept fighting and forced some of those turnovers. We got a little out of sync at times because of their pressure in the second half. Derrio was terrific and Phil had his second big game in a row. He hit big shots in the game against Temple, and followed it up with some big ones here. Derrio was spectacular if he isn't player of the week in the A-10 this week their needs to be a federal investigation cause nobody did any more than he did this week in the two wins that we had. We are really pleased. We think UMass is young but they are going to beat people, and I am just really pleased with our effort. In particular I thought switching from man to zone, back and forth, and a lot of zone in the second half I thought was a big key to the win.
Coach Lutz on the 49's depth
Derrio didn't score much the second half. They did a good job of finding him. It was a weird game for us. It isn't normal for us to have 34 from a guy and 12 from another and nobody else in double figures. I've shortened our bench a little bit and in the last couple of games, I think that's kind of helped our flow, but that can change quickly because we have guys like Javarris, Gokhan and KJ who can come in for specific matchups. But I really like that core group of seven guys, I feel we have the best chance to win with them.

We always try to pound the ball in, and DiJuan was doing a good job of finding me in transition. Coach said we would get excellent shots if we ran our lanes in the fast break, and that's what we did.
MHERST, Mass. � How to describe Derrio Green's week for the Charlotte 49ers?
Teammate Phil Jones shook his head and said softly, "I'm at a loss for words."
Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz insisted a federal investigation should be launched if Green is not named Atlantic 10 player of the week.
"Nobody did more than he did this week," Lutz said after Green's career-high 34 points lifted Charlotte to a 72-58 win Saturday night against Massachusetts at the Mullins Center.
Green finished with eight 3-pointers - the most ever scored by a UMass opponent at the Mullins Center. Combined with 26 points from Charlotte's win Wednesday against No. 15 Temple, Green amassed 60 points, seven assists and four steals in two games.
Not a bad week's worth of work.
"We always try to pound the ball inside first to Shamari (Spears) and Chris (Braswell) but DiJuan (Harris) was doing a great job of finding me in transition," said Green. "Coach said we would get excellent shots if we just ran our lanes in the fast break.
"This could have been a trap game for us. But we were determined to stay focused."
The win is Charlotte's fifth straight, and coupled with the win against Temple, the 49ers (16-5, 6-1 Atlantic 10) should receive serious consideration for a spot in the AP Top 25 when the new poll is released Monday.
Most importantly, Charlotte remains in a three-way tie for first-place in the A-10 with Temple and Xavier.
"We took a huge step Wednesday," Lutz said. "But the next step was to go on the road and validate that by winning."
The 49ers got off to a quick start in the game as Charlotte ran out to 21-9 lead with 10 minutes, 35 seconds left in the first half with the help of four 3-pointers from Green.
The Minutemen (8-13, 2-5) got within four, 28-24, before Charlotte made a 6-2 run to take a 34-26 halftime lead.
UMass used a 10-3 run to start the second half and got within one, 37-36, with 16:09 left in the game when another Charlotte hero emerged.
For the second consecutive game, Jones powered a 49ers second-half run with three straight jumpers. This time, his final jumper was a 3-pointer and that gave Charlotte a 46-36 lead with 11:21 play. Charlotte pushed its lead to as much as 17 before settling on the final margin.
"I asked every day in practice, 'Are we happy to beat Temple or are we ready to take the next step?'" Lutz said. "Tonight we answered the question."
MHERST - Bruce Springsteen�s �Glory Days�� has a bit of a hollow ring to it at the Mullins Center these days.
To be sure, the Minutemen are trying. Last night, they brought back Dana Dingle and Carmelo Travieso from the 1996 Final Four team as part of a spirited crowd of 6,003. A fan wearing a Marcus Camby shirt won a plasma TV. And coach Derek Kellogg (who played on four straight NCAA teams for UMass from 1992-95) even evoked his mentor, John Calipari, when he was given a warning - though not a technical foul - for stepping out of the coach�s box.
But the struggles continue as Kellogg tries to resurrect the program. Last night, the young Minutemen fell to resurgent Charlotte, 72-58, dropping to 8-13 (2-5 in the Atlantic 10).
�We played hard,�� said Kellogg. �We rebounded the ball.��
What the Minutemen didn�t do was make shots, a recurrent theme. UMass clanged away from the field (34.3 percent), from 3-point land (an abysmal 4 for 28), and from the foul line (just 6 for 12). That offset all the hustle.
�I didn�t anticipate that the shooting would mean so much, but it has,�� said Kellogg. �We do need to make shots with this team to really get to the next level.��
That has been a struggle all season. UMass came into the game 13th out of 14 teams in the A-10 in field goal percentage, 12th from 3-point range, and tied for eighth in foul shooting.
On the other side, Charlotte got some sizzling shooting from Derrio Green, who went off for a career-high 34 points, with 8-of-16 shooting from 3-point land. Green, who played community college ball a year ago, has been a revelation in the Atlantic 10. He has now had three straight games of 20-plus points. Earlier in the week, Green keyed an upset of 15th-ranked Temple.
�He was spectacular,�� said Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz. �If he�s not player of the week in the league, there�s going to be a federal investigation.��
The 49ers, winners of just 11 games last season, are now 16-5, having won five in a row. Their 6-1 conference record puts them in a three-way tie with Temple and Xavier for first place.
UMass trailed by 8 points at halftime, but pulled within 1 four minutes into the second half when Ricky Harris (team-high 25 points) scored on a drive. From there, though, UMass�s shooting matched the arctic-like conditions outside the Mullins Center as the Minutemen went almost 10 minutes without hitting a field goal. By then, the game was long gone.
The Minutemen got 11 points from Anthony Gurley and a solid inside performance from Sean Carter (6 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks).
UMass faces another stiff challenge Wednesday night when it hosts Xavier.

ike many other times this season, the Massachusetts men�s basketball team came close to taking a lead over an opponent, but poor shooting late in the second half against Charlotte made it easy for the 49ers to pull ahead and take UMass out of the game.
The Minutemen opened up on a 10-3 run to put them down one against the 49ers with 16 minutes, 10 seconds left in the second half. However, unlike the last time they were on ESPN against Memphis, there was no dramatic finish at the buzzer to beat Charlotte.
In fact, UMass (8-13, 2-5 Atlantic 10) never cut the deficit down to fewer than nine points since the 11:21 mark and was down by 17 points with 6:26 left.
After the Minutemen came within a point of tying the game, the 49ers (16-5, 6-1 A-10) went on a 15-3 run to increase the lead to 13 points. All three of those points came off of free-throws.
With a 39-36 lead, Charlotte center Phil Jones scored seven-straight points to push the lead back to double-digits for the first time since the opening minute of the second half.
UMass didn�t score a single field goal until center Hashim Bailey finished a layup with 7:32 left in the game. In that stretch, the Minutemen missed nine-straight field goals, four of which were from 3-point range, where they finished 1-for-13 in the second half against Charlotte.
�We didn�t make outside shots,� UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. �We shoot a lot of 3s and quite a few of those were in transition.�
Saturday night was not the only time the Minutemen were taken out of a close game in the second half.
On Dec. 23, UMass was down a point to Boston College at halftime and eventually failed to bounce back after the Eagles went on an 11-2 run. BC finished the game with a 79-67 win.
The Minutemen had a seven-point lead over La Salle on Jan. 10 at the MassMutual Center, but went on to lose that game too. Despite freshman Freddie Riley�s 22 points off the bench, Explorer center Aaric Murray�s strong play in the middle and 6-for-14 free-throw shooting in the second half gave the Maroon and White an 80-74 loss.
Part of the reason for the offensive struggles against the 49ers came because of how Charlotte adjusted in the second half; they went with a zone, which forced the Minutemen to take tougher shots.
Charlotte made more shots on fewer attempts (21-for-52) than UMass (24-for-70).
Senior Ricky Harris (25 points, 11-for-24 from the field) was the only Minuteman who didn�t struggle with his shot. The remaining guards (Riley, Anthony Gurley, David Gibbs and Gary Correia) went 19 percent from the field and missed all 10 attempts from beyond the arc.
�We have to make some better decisions against a zone,� Kellogg said. �We�ve actually went against a zone more in the last week, and I�ve made [more] changes than I ever have as a player or as a coach.�
But the Minutemen have struggled to shoot well all season.
UMass is 13th in the league with 40 percent from the field and 12th from 3-point range at 29 percent. They also shot below 20 percent from beyond the arc in three of the last four games.
UMass finished the game with a 14.3 3-point percentage, the lowest for the Minutemen all season. Harris, who had difficulties finding his shot until recently, said the biggest problem with his team�s shooting is its lack of confidence.
�We just have to start shooting with confidence and raising it up and knocking down shots,� Harris said.

MHERST - Add Charlotte guard Derrio Green to the list of players to have career nights this season against the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team.
The sophomore guard had 34 points on eight 3-pointers - a record for a Minuteman opponent - as the 49ers pulled away for a 72-58 win over UMass Saturday night at the Mullins Center.
"We played hard and rebounded the ball, but the one kid Green came out and had a career night," Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said. "We're a little bit of a work in progress, but I think we're going to continue to get better."
An'Juan Wilderness scored to open the second half to put the visitors up, 36-26. But UMass went on a 10-1 run to get within 1, 37-36 with 16 minutes, 10 seconds to play, bringing the season-best crowd of 6,003 fans to life.
But the Minutemen's offense dried up after that. They had just one field goal in the next 10:21. Charlotte (16-5, 6-1 Atlantic 10) took advantage and stretched its lead to 58-41 to clinch the game.
"We switched our defense from man to zone and played a lot of zone in the second half," 49ers coach Bobby Lutz said. "I thought that was a big key to the win."
UMass continued to rebound well against one of the biggest and most physical teams in the Atlantic 10. The Minutemen won the board battle 44-39, led by Sean Carter with 10 and Terrell Vinson with eight.
But little else went right. The Minutemen were 4-for-28 (14.3 percent) from 3-point range, 6-for-12 from the free-throw line and 24-for-70 (34.3 percent) from the field. They turned the ball over 17 times. "You don't want to rely on shooting ... our defense and rebounding have gotten better, but we need to make shots," Kellogg said.
UMass senior guard Ricky Harris agreed. "It's tough. We shot the ball decently against St. Joe's (in Wednesday's 87-80 victory) and came out with a good win," Harris said. "We came home and felt confident, but it didn't roll in our favor."
Harris was not the problem. He seemed to put his offensive slump behind him with 25 points. He had more than two 3-pointers (three) for the first time since early December. Anthony Gurley added 11 points.
Green and Phil Jones (12 points) accounted for almost two-thirds of the 49ers' points by themselves. Senior point guard Dijuan Harris had five points, eight assists and seven rebounds for Charlotte.
Things don't get much easier for the Minutemen (8-13, 2-5 A-10), who host Xavier at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mullins Center in a game that will be televised on CBS College Sports.
The Musketeers (15-6, 7-1 A-10) moved into sole possession of first place in the conference with their 108-60 win over last-place Fordham on Sunday. Xavier is one-half game ahead of Charlotte and Temple.

MHERST - After a tough loss to Charlotte Saturday night, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team got some good news as Daryl Traynham, a 5-foot-8 point guard from Upper Marlboro, Md., has given a verbal commitment to the Minutemen.
"I feel comfortable with the coaches and I felt like I was at home here," Traynham said.
Traynham, who had narrowed his choices to UMass and Western Kentucky, ESPN.com ranked him as the No. 61 point guard among high school seniors and Rivals.com rated him as the 27th best point guard and No. 110 player overall.
Traynham said he likes to use his small stature as motivation. "I like to prove people wrong who underestimate me," he said.
Traynham listed his strengths as "my tenacity, especially on defense. My ability to push the ball and make the right decision."
He said he plans to work on his jump shot and his strength before he arrives at UMass.
NCAA rules prohibit UMass coach Derek Kellogg from commenting on Traynham until the spring national letter of intent signing period which begins April 14.
Before Saturday's game, Traynham sat behind the Minuteman bench with potential future teammate Jesse Morgan who enrolled at UMass this semester. Morgan won't be allowed to play or practice until the end of the fall 2010 semester as an academic nonqualifier.
The 6-foot-5 native of Philadelphia, who originally signed at Seton Hall, said he is glad to be in Amherst.
"This is a good situation. I'm pretty comfortable here," Morgan said. "I'm here with a clean slate trying to do my best at everything I do. The team and the coaching staff are very nice and everybody has been really supportive."
Morgan said he is focusing more on his academics than basketball right now.
"I just need to keep a 2.0 (grade point average) to be able to play next year," he said. "When I can, I work out by myself and I'm playing intramurals a little."
FAMILIAR FACES IN BIG CROWD - The crowd of 6,003 was the largest for a basketball game at the Mullins Center this season.
Among those in the crowd were former UMass stars Carmelo Travieso and Dana Dingle, who received an ovation from the crowd when their names were announced.
"I was 100 percent pleased with the atmosphere in the crowd," Kellogg said. "I was pleased the way everyone came out and supported the team. It gave us somewhat of a home-court advantage. I'm hoping down the line we'll continue to get crowd support like that. It makes a difference."
SNEAKERS - Both coaching staffs wore sneakers with their suits as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer annual awareness weekend.
