he Massachusetts mens basketball team will complete what coach Derek Kellogg considers the toughest three-game stretch in his coaching career at UMass on Saturday against Rhode Island.
UMass (8-14, 2-6 Atlantic 10) is coming off two straight losses where it shrunk the deficit in the second half, but couldnt hold onto the lead. On Jan. 30, the Minutemen went on a 10-3 run against Charlotte until the 49ers went on a tear of their own and kept a convincing lead for the rest of the game.
The Maroon and White had a similar result against Xavier on Wednesday, when it erased a 17-point deficit at halftime to take the lead with just over four minutes to play. However, guard Jordan Crawford would not let his team go away easily, and hit back-to-back 3-pointers as the Musketeers held on for the win.
The Minutemen now head to Kingston, R.I., to face the overall winningest team in the A-10. The Rams (18-3, 6-2 A-10) have the highest winning percentage (.857) in the conference, with a two-point loss to Virginia Commonwealth being the only defeat outside their A-10 schedule.
They also have one of the best home-court advantages in the country with a 9-1 record.
Kellogg knows it will be tough to defeat a team that has had such a high level of success this season on the road, but hes hoping the effort against Xavier will carry over into Saturday.
We showed some character once again that were not going to go down without swinging and now weve got to be the team that hits the first time instead of waiting to take the blows, Kellogg said.
URIs main strength is its maturity. Despite having five freshmen, the Rams entire lineup is upperclassmen. They are also challenging because of their willingness to be aggressive on defense with their press.
Theyre an older, more mature team and they play a unique style, Kellogg said. They press the whole game, they try to play up and down and theyve really nestled into being comfortable in how they want to play.
URIs two conference losses were to No. 19 Temple on Jan. 10 and Xavier on Jan. 23. Since then, the Rams have been on a three-game winning streak and could be one of five or six teams from the A-10 to make the NCAA Tournament.
Theyre a team thats really been a surprise nationally with how good theyve played and how good theyve been record-wise, Kellogg said.
URI is led by senior guard Keith Cothran (16.1 points per game), who has given UMass problems in the past. At the Mullins Center last season, he finished the game with 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting to go with three steals.
The Rams went on to win that game, 71-59. However, if last year is any reason to be encouraged as to how the Minutemen might do away from the Mullins Center, they only have to look at last seasons contest at the Ryan Center on March 7, 2009.
With 6.5 seconds left in the game, Chris Lowe left a memorable impression during his last regular season game and went the length of the court to score with .6 seconds left.
Lowe finished the game with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting while adding seven assists in the effort.
Game notes:
The Rams have beaten all three teams theyve played with head coaches who spent time at UMass (Boston College, Oklahoma State and Drexel). All three wins came between Dec. 13 and Jan 2.

MHERST - University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg hopes for an effort similar to Wednesday's with a better result on Saturday when the Minutemen face Rhode Island at 2 p.m. at the Ryan Center.
UMass is coming off Wednesday's 87-79 loss at home to Xavier, a game where the Minutemen erased a 17-point halftime deficit and took the lead before falling.
"We have to keep trying to get better every day," Kellogg said. "We need to bring the effort we brought in the second half for 40 minutes,"
That holds particularly true for senior guard Ricky Harris, who struggled in the first half Wednesday as he was forced to play point guard because David Gibbs is out with a broken left foot. But Harris scored 20 of his 24 points after intermission to spark the Minutemen.
"He didn't have a good first half, but in the second half he was the best player on the floor," Kellogg said. "We need him to play well."
Saturday marks the end of a the toughest three-game stretch in conference play for UMass. The Minutemen (8-14, 2-6 Atlantic 10) lost back-to-back games to NCAA Tournament contenders Charlotte and Xavier before tangling with the Rams who are 18-3 overall (6-2 Atlantic 10).
Kellogg said the stretch has not been fun, but he's glad the league is tough.
"It would be nice to have a game that you're supposed to win or where you're the more talented team," Kellogg said. "But there are four or five teams in this league positioned to make the NCAA Tournament and that's good for everybody."
The Rams are in good shape for a tournament bid, ranked No. 11 in the ratings percentage index. They are second in the conference in scoring at 78.1 points per game. "With the way they pressure you, you're going to get some open shots and you have to make them," Kellogg said. "I don't want to get into a total track meet. We have to push and be smart."
UMass, which has had its shots blocked all season, is facing the conference leader in swats. Rhode Island has averaged 5.8 blocks per game despite not having a single player among the league's top 10 shot-blockers. Four different Rams are averaging at least one blocked shot per game.
Keith Cothran has emerged as the go-to-guy for Rhode Island on offense this season at 16.1 points per game, which is eighth in the Atlantic 10. Cothran broke out last year against the Minutemen with 26 points in the final game of the regular season.
Lamonte Ulmer is a force inside for the Rams. The 6-foot-6 forward is averaging 12 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
CORREIA HOMECOMING - Saturday's game represents not only a trip to his home state for Gary Correia of Providence, but also a return to the site of his best collegiate game. Correia had a career-high 12 points on four 3-pointers last year at the Ryan Center.
HARRIS CLIMBING - Barring an injury, a significant increase in his scoring average or a postseason run by the Minutemen, Harris is likely to finish his career at No. 4 on the all-time UMass scoring list. He could reach that on Saturday.
Harris enters the game at No. 6 with 1,728 points, three behind No. 5 Lorenzo Sutton (1,731) and 16 behind former teammate Rashaun Freeman, who is fourth at 1,744 points.
No. 3 is Lou Roe with 1,905. At Harris' current scoring average of 18.1, the Minutemen would need two Atlantic 10 Tournament games for him to catch Roe. Harris would need to average 22.1 points per game to catch Roe in the regular season.
SCOREBOARD WATCHING - There are five teams including UMass in the Atlantic 10 with two wins in conference play. The other four play each other as Duquesne (11-11, 2-6 A-10) is at George Washington (12-9, 2-6 A-10) on Saturday, while St. Bonaventure (9-11, 2-5 A-10) is at Saint Joseph's (8-14, 2-6 A-10) in a game rescheduled to Sunday by a snowstorm.
One of those five, along with Fordham (0-8 A-10) will likely miss next month's conference tournament.
BONNER IN SPRINGFIELD - A pair of former Minuteman big men will square off against each other at 7 p.m. Saturday in Springfield.
Luke Bonner, who recently signed with the Austin Toros, could be matched up against his former teammate Dante Milligan of the Springfield Armor.

INGSTON, R.I. - The longest-running rivalry in UMass basketball history had another chapter written on Saturday afternoon at the Ryan Center as the Minutemen (8-15, 2-7 A-10) lost at Rhode Island, 93-85. The Minutemen made things interesting late, erasing a 24-point deficit by scoring 21 points in the final 3:45 to pull within six with under a minute to go. The Rams (19-3, 7-2 A-10 and No. 12 in the RPI) pressured UMass all afternoon forcing the Minutemen into 21 turnovers including 17 in the first half alone.
The bright spot was senior Ricky Harris, who moved to fourth in career scoring at UMass with a season-best 32. With his 1,760, he passed Rashaun Freeman (1,744) and Lorenzo Sutton (1,731) in the game. After being held scoreless for over 36 minutes, Anthony Gurley scored 15 points in the final three and a half minutes. Sean Carter added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Terrell Vinson had 10 points.
UMass trailed by as much as 24 midway through the second half, but mounted a late comeback, led by all 15 of Gurley's points to pull within single digits and as close as six with 16 seconds left on a Gurley 3-pointer. Two clutch free throws by Delroy James with 15 seconds left iced the game for the Rams.
Rhode Island had five players scored in double-figures led Akeem Richmond with 19. Lamonte Ulmer (17 points and 10 rebounds). Will Martell (13), James (13) and Keith Cothran (10) also scored 10 or more for the Rams. Rhody gained a measure of revenge after UMass severely hurt their NCAA Tournament hopes last season with a 72-71 win in the regular-season finale at the Ryan Center.
Rhode Island came out with a press and blitzed UMass with defense to take an 18-9 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half as the Rams finished a 10-0 run. The Minutemen turned the ball over 11 times in the game's first 8:44 leading to 12 Ram points. UMass countered with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 18-16 on a Harris jumper with 9:14 left in the first half.
Martell was unstoppable for the Rams as he scored seven points in a row to give URI a 37-22 lead with 3:27 left in the first half. The 7-0 canned four first-half jump shots and made 6-of-8 from the field overall before halftime.
Richmond's 3-pointer with 7.2 seconds left in the first half was the exclamation point for the Rams, who led 46-29 at intermission. Harris did have a game-high 17 for the Minutemen in the first 20 minutes.
After being down by as many as 19 in the final seconds of the first half, UMass scored the first eight points of the second half and 11 of the first 13 points to cut the deficit to 48-41, 4:17 into the second. But the Rams answered by scoring the next 10 points to regain a lead of 17 at 58-41 on Delroy James and Orion Outerbridge breakaway dunks.
UMass plays at Duquesne on Thursday night, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. The game will air on Comcast SportsNet New England. The Minutemen's next home game is set for Sunday, Feb. 14 vs. Saint Joseph's at 4 p.m. That game will air nationally on CBS College Sports.

or the second straight game, the Massachusetts basketball team could not overcome a steep halftime deficit in order to defeat a conference opponent.
The Minutemen (8-15, 2-7 Atlantic 10) fell to Rhode Island (19-3, 7-2 A-10) Saturday afternoon, 93-85, as UMass scored 21 points in the final three minutes, 45 seconds to pull within six points with under a minute to go in the game, but could not come up with their second A-10 road victory.
UMass 85 points were its most scored in a loss so far this season.
I thought we obviously turned the ball over a few too many times in the first half, 17 times, and didnt shoot the free throws too well, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said.
UMass turned the ball over 21 times, including five from senior guard Ricky Harris, who led all scorers with and had a season-high 32 points. Harris went 9-of-11 from the charity stripe, but the team shot just 58.6 percent from the line.
There were four or five occasions when we had three-point plays and five-point plays, we missed a one-and-one, they came down and hit threes and where we didnt box out on the free-throw, they hit another three, so, a lot of inexperienced plays by some of our guys that were rectified at halftime, and I thought we gave it a yeomans effort to come back and make the game interesting, Kellogg said.
Redshirt junior forward Anthony Gurley was held scoreless for the first 36 minutes of the game, but exploded for 15 points in the final three and half minutes, but it was too little too late for the Minutemen. Gurley went 5-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line, but also committed four turnovers in the loss.
He made a few plays in the first half that were very unlike Anthony, and I felt like giving him a little time on the bench would get him going, and he came back and played very well, Kellogg said. I mean we cant have him not play the way he did at the end for a whole game, I dont think we have enough fire power, and were not good enough.
Along with Gurley and Harris, Sean Carter had 11 points, while freshmen Freddie Riley and Terrell Vinson added seven and 10 points, respectively.
The Minutemen continued to hold the advantage against the opponents on the boards, outrebounding the Rams 45-35, with freshman Javorn Farrell and Carter grabbing eight a piece. UMass also shot the ball well, shooting almost 50 percent for the game.
Were still a work in progress, there were some good signs by some different guys, and if you dont turn the ball over 17 times or 21 times for the game, and go 17-for-29 from the free-throw line, I think you at least have a chance to be in the ball game, against a really good Rhode Island team, Kellogg said.
Harris play started at point guard, as the Rams had a press defense that caused a number of turnovers for the Minutemen.
Its funny when he presses less and doesnt try to score, he scores more, and he did that in the second half against Xavier and in the second half [here], Kellogg said. Hes starting to nestle into that role as the leader of this team. Unfortunately were pretty far into the season, but I think we can make a late run from here and see if we can do some things.
Harris scored 15 points in the second half and did not turn the ball over in the final 20 minutes of the game.
The Rams were led by Akeem Richmond, who scored 19 points off the bench for URI, while Lamonte Ulmer added 17 on 7-of-8 shooting. URI scored 19 points off of turnovers, while the Minutemen converted 11, and the Rams scored 16 points on fast breaks.
I guess the stats dont lie, they pretty much tell the story of the game, Kellogg said.
The Minutemen have lost three-straight and will take on Duquesne Thursday, Feb. 11 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

INGSTON, R.I. - Turnovers were the latest problem as the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team continued its season-long struggles Saturday afternoon at the University of Rhode Island.
The Rams pressured and trapped the Minutemen throughout and exposed their point guard woes early. Rhode Island turned 21 UMass turnovers into 19 points as the Minutemen fell 93-85 at the Ryan Center.
With sophomore guard David Gibbs likely out for the season with a broken foot, Ricky Harris, Gary Correia and Javorn Farrell all shared the ball-handling chores for UMass, but were overmatched by the Rams' quicker defenders.
The ball-handling struggles were particularly glaring in the first half as the Minutemen had as many turnovers (17) as they did field goal attempts. Ten of those came in the first eight minutes as UMass looked overwhelmed.
"We obviously turned the ball over a few too many times in the first half," Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said. "We gave a yeoman's effort to come back and make the game interesting.
"If you don't turn the ball over 17 times in the first half or 21 times in the game, you still have a chance to be in the ball game against a very good Rhode Island team," he added.
The Minutemen (8-15, 2-7 Atlantic 10) might have challenged the school record of 38 turnovers in the game, but the Rams (19-3, 7-2 A-10) relaxed their pressure as their lead widened.
"In the first half we did a really good job of turning them over. We really forced the tempo," said Rhode Island coach Jim Baron. "We got lax in the second half."
Kellogg said, "They did a good job making the game hard on us. We made some very young plays. It wasn't one guy. The whole team helped out in the turnover department."
Harris, who finished with a season-high 32 points, agreed.
"Turnovers killed us. They led to easy baskets for them in transition," Harris said. "We had turnovers in the first half that weren't even forced turnovers, just dumb mistakes. We gave them a lot of momentum."
For the second straight game, UMass fell behind by 17 at halftime. And just like in Wednesday's 87-79 loss to Xavier, the Minutemen cut into that deficit in a hurry, shaving off 10 points in the first four minutes after intermission.
But the momentum was short-lived on Saturday. URI scored 10 straight points and was never really threatened again until late.
Baron emptied his bench a little early as Anthony Gurley, who was scoreless for the first 36 minutes of the game, mounted his own little uprising for UMass. He scored 15 points - including four 3-pointers - in the last 3 minutes, 17 seconds as the Minutemen scrambled to cut a 24-point deficit to six with 16 seconds left. But the Rams made enough free throws down the stretch to hold on.
"He made a few plays in the first half that were very unlike Anthony and I felt like maybe giving him a little time on the bench would get him going," Kellogg said. "He came back and played very well.
"We can't have him not play the way he played at the end for a whole game," Kellogg added. "We don't have enough firepower."
Sean Carter had 11 points and eight rebounds for UMass, while Terrell Vinson added 10 points and six boards.
Rhode Island was led by freshman Akeem Richmond with 19 points, including six 3-pointers. Lamonte Ulmer had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Rams, while Delroy James and Will Martell each scored 13 points.
The Minutemen are at Duquesne (12-11, 3-6 A-10) at 7 p.m. Thursday.

INGSTON, R.I. - University of Massachusetts senior guard Ricky Harris had a memorable day in a forgettable game Saturday afternoon.
He continued to put his offensive slump in the rear-view mirror with a season-high 32 points as the Minutemen lost 93-85 at Rhode Island. Harris was 10-for-17 from the floor and three-for-six from 3-point range.
"When he doesn't press himself, I think he can be the best offensive player in the league," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "When he presses less and doesn't try to score, he scores more. In the second half against Xavier he was fantastic and he did that again in spurts" Saturday.
Harris now has 1,760 points in his career, fourth all-time at UMass. He passed No. 5 Lorenzo Sutton (1,731) and former teammate No. 4 Rashaun Freeman (1,744).
Harris needs 145 points to catch No. 3 Lou Roe (1,905). With seven regular-season games left, Harris would have to average 20.7 to tie Roe.
The 32 points were three shy of the career-high for Harris which came last year against Boston College. It was the third time he scored 30 or more in his career and the 37th time he's cleared 20. Harris has reached double figures in 33 straight games.
LOOKING AHEAD - After three straight losses against teams in NCAA Tournament contention - Charlotte, Xavier and Rhode Island - the Minutemen (8-15, 2-7 Atlantic 10) play their next three against teams with losing conference records. They are at Duquesne (12-11, 3-6 A-10) at 7 p.m. Thursday in Pittsburgh, host Saint Joseph's (9-14, 3-6 A-10) at 4 p.m. Sunday and travel to George Washington (12-10, 2-7 A-10) at 7 p.m. Feb. 17.
The Dukes beat the Colonials 70-63 in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, and the Hawks defeated St. Bonaventure 78-71 in Philadelphia on Sunday.
"Playing against teams like this you learn to value possessions. Every mistake we made they executed and took advantage off," Harris said about Saturday's loss. "The next few games coming up we're at the same level in the conference. We could come out with three or four good wins."
Sean Carter said the key to being successful in those games is a 40-minute effort.
"Over the next couple weeks we're playing teams with (similar) records. This is a big stretch for us, he said. "We have to show what we can do.
"That's the one thing that's kept us from being a good team, competing for 40 minutes," Carter added. "That's what these teams (that UMass has played recently) do and that's why they're tournament teams."
Kellogg believes his team is capable of a surge.
"Unfortunately it's late in the season, but I think we can make a late run here and do some things," he said.

OUTH KINGSTOWN URIs pressure defense has caused problems for a number of teams in the last several seasons, but rarely has it been quite as effective as it was in the first half of the game against Massachusetts on Saturday at the Ryan Center.
The Rams all but hounded the Minutemen into submission with their full-court press, forcing 17 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. They turned them into 19 Rhode Island points, enough to allow the Rams to build a big lead and go on to a 93-85 triumph.
The end result might look the same in that it was Rhodys 12th win in single digits, but the game did not play the same.
Spurred on by a sellout crowd of 7,579, Rhode Island used its defense to get this one under control almost from the start. Coach Jim Baron substituted liberally after his team built its lead as high as 24, at 69-45. UMass took advantage by making a barrage of 3-pointers. That caused some anxious moments for URI fans as the Minutemen drew as close as six at 91-85 in the final minute. Still, the issue was never seriously in doubt.
The URI starters returned in plenty of time to put away a victory that ups the record to 19-3, 7-2 in the Atlantic 10. UMass falls to 8-15, 2-7.
While Rhode Island poured in 93 points, the defense was the big difference in this one.
In the first half, we really did a great job of turning them over, Baron said. We really forced the tempo.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg started his postgame discussion on the same subject.
I thought we obviously turned the ball over way too many times in the first half, he began. [There were] a lot of inexperienced plays by our guys that were rectified at halftime. I thought we gave a yeomans effort to come back.
Ricky Harris did all he could to keep the game close. The senior guard, who played at Winchendon Academy with URI co-captain Keith Cothran, poured in 32 points, the most by a URI opponent all year.
Rhode Island responded with some great individual numbers, too. Akeem Richmond came off the bench to pour in 19 points in 20 minutes. Lamonte Ulmer was 7-for-8 from the field, including another one of his spectacular alley-oop dunks, on the way to 17 points. He also had a game-high 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double.
Will Martell continued his strong recent play with 13 points, all in the first half, and Delroy James also had 13, all in the second half. Keith Cothran had 10 points, tied his career high in assists, with seven, and had five of Rhode Islands 11 steals.
Of all the numbers, the ones in the steal and turnover category were the most important in this one. Massachusetts has had point-guard issues all season, a concern that grew even deeper last week when David Gibbs, who had been the prime guy at that spot, was lost for the season with a broken foot.
URI took advantage. The Rams came out hounding the Minutemen all over the court. It made for amazing numbers as URI raced to a 46-29 lead at the half. URI forced so many turnovers that it had twice as many shots in the first half as the Minutemen, 35-17. UMass had as many turnovers as it had shots taken, 17 of each. UMass shot 59 percent from the field yet still trailed by 17.
The Minutemen went on a 12-2 run to start the second half to get within 48-41. Rhode Island responded with 10 in a row, capped by dunks by James and Orion Outerbridge, to get it back to 58-41. The lead peaked at 69-45 on a Richmond trey before UMass came back as the URI pressure faded. UMass had only four second-half turnovers. After 19 first-half points off turnovers, the Rams had none in the second half.
Weve got to do a better job of closing out games, Richmond said. We came out with a lot of energy in the first half. I guess we got comfortable and let them back in.
The end was kind of shaky, Ulmer agreed. Thats something we need to stop, we need to control as a team.
We still need to improve, Baron said. We have to put two halves together.
The team would like to do that in its next game. It hosts Richmond, which knocked off Temple on Saturday. The Spiders also are 7-2 in the conference and they figure to do a better job against URIs pressure. They have the best point guard in the conference in Kevin Anderson.
INGSTON, R.I. - With a better record than any Division 1 team in New England not named the UConn women, Rhode Island still has managed to fly under the national radar en route to its 19 wins.
The Rams piled up a 24-point lead midway through the second half yesterday and held off a hard late charge by UMass for a 93-85 Atlantic 10 victory at the Ryan Center.
Freshman Akeem Richmond threw in six 3-pointers and finished with 19 points to lead URI (19-3, 7-2), which also got double-digit scoring outings from Lamonte Ulmer (17), Delroy James (13), Will Martell (13) and Keith Cothran (10).
Twelve of URIs wins have come by single digits, seven by five points or less.
Im happy, but not satisfied. We have some work to do, Rams coach Jim Baron said. Were still trying to do the little things and put those two halves together. We really forced the tempo, and then we got a little lax.
The Minutemen (8-15, 2-7) fell into a 46-29 hole at halftime, thanks in large part to 17 turnovers. Ricky Harris scored a season-high 32 points to become the No. 4 all-time scorer in school history, and Anthony Gurley scored all of his 15 in the final three-plus minutes as UMass rallied to as close as six points.
If we didnt turn the ball over, wed at least have a chance to be in the ballgame, said UMass coach Derek Kellogg, whose team has lost 10 of its last 12. We gave it a yeomans effort to try to come back and make the game interesting.
From an early 9-8 deficit, the Rams scored 10 in a row, capped by a pair of fast-break buckets by Stevie Mejia. Harris ran off seven straight points of his own to bring UMass to within 18-16, but URI steadily pulled away to lead by as many as 19 points before the break.
UMass trailed by 17 even though it shot 59 percent from the field, taking less than half as many shots as the Rams (35-17).
We had turnovers in the first half that werent even forced, just dumb mistakes, Harris said. We gave them a lot of momentum.
The Minutemen then got 3-pointers from Freddie Riley and Harris to begin the second half and climbed back to within 48-41.
Rhode Island answered with the next 10 points and eventually led 69-45 with just less than 10 minutes to go.
The lead still was 81-60 when Richmond hit his sixth and final trey with 5:03 left, before UMass began to peck away.
Rhode Island kept the game safe by making 12-of-14 foul shots in the last four minutes. It finished 27-of-33 overall at the line.
Sean Carter (11 points) and Terrell Vinson (10) also reached double figures for the Minutemen.
