MHERST - University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg was still tired Friday afternoon as he drove back to Amherst after taping his weekly TV show in Springfield.
The Minutemen's flight back from Pittsburgh landed in Massachusetts after 2 a.m. Friday and sleep had been short for the UMass coach.
But his exhaustion was at least partially tempered by the Minutemen's 84-80 win over Duquesne on Thursday in overtime.
"Winning leaves you a little more rejuvenated," Kellogg said. "A win gives you a little more energy."
The Minutemen will try to turn that extra energy into a winning streak when they host Saint Joseph's at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Mullins Center.
Before Thursday's game, UMass (9-15, 3-7 Atlantic 10) was competing to stay in contention to make the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Now the bottom half of the conference is so bunched together that the Minutemen are now a half game back of earning a home game in the first round of the 12-team field.
"To really feel like you're playing well you have to put back-to-back games together where not only do you play well, but you win," Kellogg said.
Sunday's game represents an opportunity against the Hawks, who have the same overall and league records as UMass.
A win would not only push the Minutemen ahead of St. Joseph's in the standings, but they also would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker should the teams end up tied later. UMass defeated the Hawks 87-80 on Jan. 27 in Philadelphia.
"That's the great thing about sports, one day you're out of commission then the next day you're fighting for a home game," Kellogg said. "I explained to our guys that if we play well we have a chance to get a home game. We're not looking too far ahead. I haven't shied away from telling them (Thursday) was a big game and that Sunday is a good game. A little pressure isn't a bad thing."
Since losing to UMass, the Hawks are 1-3 with a win over St. Bonaventure at home and losses to Duquesne, Richmond and Saint Louis.
While Kellogg was impressed with his team's ability to come back from a 16-point deficit against Duquesne, he said the next step is avoiding the deep first-half holes that have been prevalent lately.
"That would be nice. To take the next step we can't get down 12, 15, 17 points and then decide to play," Kellogg said. "We haven't scratched the surface as far as playing for a full 40 minutes. But we're inching closer."
With the short turnaround between Thursday and Sunday, Kellogg is keeping practice limited.
"There's not much we can do for St. Joe's," he said. "We can give them the game plan. They need to execute it."

MHERST, Mass. - UMass held Saint Joseph's scoreless for the final 10:49 of the first half going on a 16-0 run to secure a 70-62 win over the Hawks on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen put forth a tremendous defensive effort forcing Saint Joseph's to miss its final 13 shots of the first half as the Hawks didn't make a field goal in the final 11:35. With the win, UMass (10-15 overall) moves into a tie for eighth in the Atlantic 10 with a 4-7 conference record (with Duquesne). Saint Joseph's (9-16 overall), falls to 13th in the A-10 at 3-8. Only the top 12 teams in the league qualify for the league tournament.
The reigning Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week Ricky Harris led the Minutemen with 27 points as he became the fourth player in UMass history to surpass 1,800 career points. With 1,816, Harris is the active career scoring leader in the Atlantic 10. Over his last six games, Harris is averaging more than 27 points per game with at least 22 in each game. Anthony Gurley added 15 points. Sean Carter grabbed double-figure rebounds for the fifth time this season and second game in a row with 11 after a career-high 19 in the comeback win at Duquesne on Thursday.
The Minutemen finished the first half, scoring the final 16 points of the period with Harris scoring seven of the points in the run. Matt Hill's 3-pointer with 3:27 left in the first gave UMass a 23-19 lead. That was the first score in more than five minutes as neither team scored following a Harris lay-up which gave the Minutemen the lead they would never relinquish with 8:36 left in the first at 20-19. UMass had its largest halftime lead since being up 15 at Holy Cross on Dec. 5, 2009 and its largest in a conference game this season. For the first time in three games, UMass didn't trail by double-figures at halftime, as the Minutemen led by double-figures for just the fourth time in 2009-10.
Saint Joseph's cut UMass' lead to as small as six early in the second half on two occasions. Carl Jones' 3-pointer with 13:49 left in the second, brought the Hawks to within, 38-32. But UMass maintained a double-digit lead for most of the remainder of the half until the final minutes.
Saint Joseph's Garrett Williams made two free throws with 2:00 left in the game to bring the Hawks to within five at 59-54. Javorn Farrell made two free throws with 1:29 left to put the Minutemen up 61-54. Jones' runner made it a five-point game again at 61-56 with 1:20 left. Harris and Gurley combined for nine free throws in the final minute to solidify the win.
Williamson led the Hawks in scoring with 19 points. Darren Govens had 15 points and Justin Crosgile chipped in with 11.
The Minutemen's next game is set for Wednesday, Feb. 17 at George Washington at 7 p.m. The next home game is Sunday, Feb. 21 vs. Saint Louis at 4 p.m.

Coach Derek Kellogg's postgame reaction
Well I am happy I am able to come away with the W on Valentines Day. It was a good game. It thought we played hard, at times it looked like we were a little lethargic, but our guys fought through. We started winning the 50-50 balls, rebounded a little better, and we had stretches when we played great defense. Offensively I thought Rickey was great again, and Anthony Gurley is starting to get back to the Anthony Gurley we know and love. A good win for us, we are pushing forward here for the Atlantic 10 tournament.
Coach Kellogg on winning without playing their best game
We are growing up as a team, getting more mature, playing tougher, and its evident by the ability to win a game when you don't play great or perfect. We made free throws down the stretch, I thought we were strong with the ball, but defensively and on the boards is where we were making very good strides. When we start making shots we look like a pretty good basketball team.
Coach Kellogg on players falling into their roles
It's taken awhile but the roles are starting to be established. It's been a slow process, we've had injuries, guys playing different positions, and we are starting playing three freshmen, a sophomore and a senior. So that part of it has been somewhat difficult. Rickey has been playing a much more complete game as of late; his defense has gotten much better. He is playing much better, and over that stretch he might be the most valuable player in the league.
Coach Kellogg on Ricky Harris
He actually gets inside the key area this year. He is banging heads, and fighting and scraping when at times early on he was looking to go the other way. He is becoming a complete basketball player, and that's what I want for all of our guys. It's great cause Ricky and I have spent a lot of time together meeting and talking, and when you see a guy buying in and taking his game to the next level, that's really what coaching is all about.
Coach Kellogg on the first half defense
They did a good job in transition and got a lot of open looks. We were playing a pretty solid and physical man to man defense; we are getting better in practice defensively so that's carrying over to games. My time is looking like they know what they are doing defensively, that makes me feel like we are moving in the right direction. When the ball goes from one side to the other they are moving as a pack, when the rebound goes up we are screening out and rebounding; not for a full forty minutes just yet, but we are moving a little closer.
Coach Kellogg on the team's energy
It's been good for those guys; it's been good for the players, it's been good for the coaches and I think it has been good for the university and the area to really take that next step. The guys have been a really good bunch of kids to be around, they haven't wavered too much. There has been a stretch when I had to come up with some creative ways to get them pumped up for practice, but for the most part they have been following the mission and pushing forward with the coaches. I have good bunch of kids, that's what has been fun about this year. Those are the guys I want to go to battle with every night.
Ricky Harris on this year being personal for him
These last couple of games I have just wanted to leave it all out on the floor. I am starting to realize this is my last time being able to play college basketball, and my teammates are starting to realize that too. Basically we all just came together, we don't want to end on a bad note, we want to finish on some type of positive note. My teammates are starting to buy-in. I am starting to play a lot harder defensively, offensively I know what I am capable of doing, but I just applaud these guys they come to practice every day and work hard for the coaches and myself. Now we just need to continue to build off that.
Phil Martelli On Ricky Harris:
I give a lot of credit to a kid like Ricky Harris, obviously the last seven games now his average is 27 a game. We wanted to make him a vocal point, the focus of our defense, and he was still able to get 15 shots in the air. I'm leaving here not disappointed at all defensively, I think we accomplished what we set out to do. I do leave hurting for my players because we went 11 and a half minutes without scoring. That's hard to do, that's on me. We need more skill time, we need more creative offensive thinking. It wasn't even turnovers, it was jumper, jumper, and we have to get some thrust to the basket. Second half defense, attention to detail, giving them nine field goals, we have not been good in the second half defensively either at home or on the road.
Martelli on growth of team:
No, I just said that to the coaches, that's the hurt that I have because we've built this on daily improvement individually and collectively. I said to the player's after Tuesday nights game, we were off Wednesday and Thursday, we practiced Friday and we did a six game recap with is what we do after every six games. My comment to them is when I stay awake at night, it's whose improving, who is taking advantage of extra gym time or extra coaching time or film study or that kind of thing. That's where I am, it's not the record, it is what it is. It's not our predicament in the league, it is what it is. Where I'm hurt, where I failed them, is I would like to be able to say that in this area we're moving forward. Now collectively we're better defensively and we're rebounding better. If you combine this first half with the first half at St. Louis, we scored 39 points. That's just hard to swallow and it's on me, it's not on them.
Martelli on momentum in game:
When you're fighting uphill the way we were you need every play to be perfect and it might have been a bounce, a rebound, a loose ball, a whistle. You need everything to fall in place. There were times in the second half when I thought one more play and we didn't get that one play. Whether we stepped to the line and went 0-2, or we rushed a play to the basket which I thought we did in the second half. We rushed some plays to the basket instead of maybe being a little more composed.
Martelli on UMass' improvement:
Well Harris. I don't want to dismiss anyone else, but there playing without a starter, Gibbs. Ricky Harris to me has embraced this thing as a senior. I think as a senior you can grab it by the throat and not let it get away. Some of these games are astounding. I'm watching the Rhode Island game and thinking this is going to be a 45 point game, and it's 23 and they cut it to six. The game the other night in Pittsburgh, they're dead in the water and he hits two threes and the rest of them pile up. They were down 17 to Xavier at the half, 50-33 and they have a lead, whatever that was 60-59 or something like that. I've always believed that in this league it's your seniors. I've used this on the conference coaches, your seniors get a tattoo at the end of their senior year, and the tattoo says their record for their senior year, some guys don't want that tattoo. They don't want 10-17, 10-20. He seems to be a guy that has choked this thing, and they were very very impressive. And they were better defensively today than they've been. They were more active and energized and active defensively.
he Massachusetts mens basketball team employed an 11-minute defensive stand and held on down the stretch against Saint Josephs to earn itself a 70-62 victory and its first back-to-back wins this year.
Im happy we got to come away with a win, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. Our guys fought through, started winning the 50-50 balls, rebounding a little better, and we had stretches where we played great defense.
Kellogg said he believes his team is starting to make strides and become more seasoned.
Were growing up as a team, getting more mature, Kellogg said. Were getting better in practice defensively, so thats carrying over to games, and my teams looking like they know what theyre doing.
Up 19-14, with 10 minutes, 28 seconds to play in the first, the Hawks relinquished their lead when they were forced into 13 consecutive missed field goals and six turnovers. Following a 16-0 run, the Minutemen jumped out to a commanding 30-19 halftime advantage.
St. Joes coach Phil Martelli complimented the UMass defensive effort.
They were better defensively than theyve been, Martelli said. They were more active and energized.
The Minutemen defense held the Hawks to 36 percent shooting from the field, including 26 percent in the first half.
After carrying a scoreless drought into the locker room, St. Josephs came out enlivened on the offensive end, getting off the scoring snide with a Garret Williamson (19 points) jumper 35 seconds into the period.
Both teams traded baskets until the Hawks shaved the lead down to 38-32 with free throws and a Carl Jones 3-pointer just under eight minutes into the half. UMass extended its lead out to nine with a long-ball by guard Ricky Harris, who led all scorers with 27 points.
With 6:47 remaining, Harris gave the Minutemen their largest lead of the game, driving to the hoop for a layup and a foul shot, which proved to be their last field goal of the game.
Facing a 54-41 deficit, St. Joes fought their way back within seven, outscoring UMass, 15-7, in the next 5:30 to cut the lead to five with 1:20 left.
Despite not scoring from the field in nearly the final seven minutes, the Minutemen clamped down to secure the win on the defensive end. Harris was pleased with his teams ability to win without scoring baskets.
Thats something that our coach stresses all the time, Harris said. We showed some signs of that today. We got crucial defensive stops, we got rebounds, and we got to the free throw line, which is big for us.
Although they weathered the late attack by the Hawks, center Sean Carter still believes they could be more consistent.
We need to get to the point where we can play the whole game like that, Carter said.
Kellogg admired the overall grit of his teams play.
Were playing tougher and its evident by the ability to win a game when you dont play great or perfect, Kellogg said. Defensively and on the boards is where were really making strides.
Carters long stride pulled down 11 rebounds in Sundays victory to help his team win a 44-35 advantage on the glass.
Im starting to attack the boards more, Carter said. Im being more active, not standing around and its helping us a lot.
Anthony Gurley provided a spark off the UMass bench, contributing 15 points and nine rebounds in 26 minutes.
The Minutemens consecutive wins are the first since mid-December. The team will look to string together three wins in a row for the first time this season on tomorrow at George Washington.

MHERST - It will not go down as a pretty win for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team, but in the context of this season, Sunday's victory over Saint Joseph's at the Mullins Center will go down as a big one.
The Minutemen (10-15, 4-7 Atlantic 10) won 70-62 for their first back-to-back victories since mid-December. That vaulted them into a tie with Duquesne for eighth place in the Atlantic 10.
Senior Ricky Harris said, "We've all come together. We don't want to end up on a bad note. We want to finish this season on a positive note."
UMass had not led at halftime since its win at St. Joseph's on Jan. 27. In the last three games, the Minutemen trailed by double-digits at intermission. But they held the Hawks without a point for the last 10 minutes, 49 seconds of the first half and without a field goal for the final 11:35.
The Minutemen scored the last 16 points before the break and led 30-19.
"I leave here hurting for my players," St. Joseph's coach Phil Martelli said. "We went 11 minutes in the first half without scoring. That's hard to do. That's on me. We need more skill time and creative offensive thinking. We have to get some thrust to the basket."
The Hawks outscored the Minutemen in the second half and got within five points with 1:21 remaining, but the Minutemen made eight of 12 free-throw attempts after that to hold on.
"It was a good win for us and helps us pushing forward toward the Atlantic 10 Tournament," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "We're growing up as a team, getting more mature and playing tougher. That's evident by being able to win a game where you don't play perfect."
Harris continued his torrid scoring with 27 points, while Anthony Gurley added 15 points and nine rebounds.
Garrett Williamson had 19 points to lead St. Joseph's (9-16, 3-8 Atlantic 10), and Darrin Govens added 15.
The Hawks, dropped to 13th in the Atlantic 10 and are in danger of missing the 12-team conference tournament.
The Minutemen will try for its third straight win at 7 p.m. Wednesday at George Washington.

MHERST - Less than a month ago, it looked like Ricky Harris was heading for a disappointing final chapter in an otherwise strong career for the University of Massachusetts basketball team.
His scoring was down by his standards. He was forcing shots and the Minutemen were losing a lot of games.
But over the past six games, Harris has seemed to find his game again. He's scored at least 25 over his last five games and has led the recent resurgence by UMass.
"These past couple of games I just wanted to leave it on the floor," Harris said. "I'm starting to realize that this my last time playing college basketball.
"In the first part of the season I felt like I was forcing a lot of stuff instead of letting the game come to me," he added. "Now I feel a lot more relaxed. The game is coming to me and I'm feeding off my teammates too."
Harris was named the Atlantic 10 player of the week before Sunday's game recognizing his 29 points in the Minutemen's 84-80 win in overtime against Duquesne on Thursday.
"The way Ricky is playing as of late is a more complete game. His defense is getting better. He's playing like a senior," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "Over the stretch where we've played better, he's been the most valuable player in the league."
St. Joseph's coach Phil Martelli praised the Minuteman guard.
"Give a lot of credit to Ricky Harris. We wanted to make him a focal point of our defense and he was still able to get 15 shots in the air," Martelli said.
"Ricky Harris has embraced this thing as a senior," he added. "As a senior you can grab it by the throat and not let it get away. The game the other night in Pittsburgh they were down 17 and dead in the water and he hits two 3s and the rest of them piled on."
Harris scored in double figures for the 35th straight time and moved up to 1,816 career points. He's 91 points behind Lou Roe, who is No. 3 on the UMass career scoring list.
GAFFNEY IN CROWD - Former Minuteman standout Tony Gaffney was one of the 4,833 fans in the Mullins Center. It was the second largest home crowd this season.
UMass won at home for the first time since beating Fordham on Jan. 6
MISCELLANEOUS - It was the Minutemen's third straight win over Saint Joseph's, who had won 11 of 13 games against UMass before that.
The Minutemen's 11-point halftime edge was their biggest lead at intermission since Dec. 5 when they had a 15-point advantage over Holy Cross.
Matt Hill had a career-high five rebounds and made his first 3-pointer of the season.
Junior Anthony Gurley's 15 points gave him 900 in his career.
