Minutemen look for third consecutive win
By Adam Miller, Massachusetts Daily Collegian Staff, 2/16/2010

While the top half of the Atlantic 10 has been battling for a potential NCAA Tournament berth, the Massachusetts men’s basketball team was worrying about just making the one for its own conference.

The Minutemen (10-15, 4-7 A-10) had one win between Jan. 10 and Feb. 6 and were in danger of missing the A-10 Tournament entirely. A two-game winning streak, however, has put UMass in an eighth-place tie with Duquesne and back in contention.

The Minutemen will now look to make it three-straight tonight against George Washington, after wins against the Dukes and Saint Joseph’s. The Colonials are also coming off of a 78-53 win over Fordham, but are also facing struggles similar to UMass.

GW (13-10, 3-7 A-10) lost three close games by an average margin of 5.7 points per game prior to its trip to the Bronx.

Although their record would indicate otherwise, the Colonials are still a competitive team in the A-10. They lost to Xavier, Richmond and Rhode Island by single-digits and defeated Saint Louis in overtime.

Although neither team is in contention for an NCAA berth, the bottom half of the conference is in a near dead-lock trying to avoid joining the winless Rams at the bottom for 13th place. A win would give either team some breathing room.

GW has become one of the more defensive-minded teams in the A-10, allowing 66.9 points per game and is at the top of the league in steals per game (8.4). The last time the Minutemen played as strong of a defense as the Colonials was on Jan. 16 against Temple, where they finished with 64 points in the loss.

Freshman Lasan Kromah has been the biggest contributor on defense with an average of two steals, and is second behind Duquesne’s Damian Saunders, who has 2.8.

If UMass can take care of the basketball and keep it away from Kromah, it should have little trouble being comfortable with the offense. Despite playing as many as three freshmen at a time, senior Ricky Harris believes that the team is starting to come together and that is mainly because the younger players understand their roles.

“When you’re out there as a freshman coming into college, everyone wants to come in and be Michael Beasley and Kevin Durant and it’s been kind of hard for those guys, but now everyone’s starting to understand their roles,” Harris said of the freshmen’s improved play following Sunday’s win against the Hawks.

Recently, Terrell Vinson, Freddie Riley and Javorn Farrell have all embraced different roles on the team, and are starting to play on a more consistent basis.

Vinson is starting to become a more consistent rebounder, averaging 5.5 rebounds per game. Riley, who from the first day hasn’t been shy about his confidence in his 3-point shot, is now the team’s second-best shooter from beyond the arc (33.8 percent).

Farrell has been equally as important on defense, filling in for sophomore David Gibbs, who went down on Feb. 2 with a broken foot. His contributions as of late have helped the Minutemen put together some long runs defensively that allow the offense to get more scoring opportunities.

The most recent example was the 11-minute stand UMass had against SJU that allowed the offense to go on a 16-0 run. Tonight, coach Derek Kellogg is going to need his freshmen to continue that momentum against a team that gives even the league’s toughest opponents a hard test.

Rebounding translates into wins for the Minutemen
By David Brinch, Massachusetts Daily Collegian Staff, 2/16/2010

When teams rebound the basketball at a higher rate than their opponents, they can generate boards into scoring opportunities and have a better chance of winning games.

Just ask the Massachusetts men’s basketball team.

The Minutemen (10-15, 3-7 Atlantic 10) are first in the A-10 in offensive rebounding with 15.4 per game, and lead the conference in overall rebounding with 41.4 per game.

UMass is sixth in the NCAA in offensive rebounds per game and in total offensive rebounds (386), and are in the top 40 in rebounding margin (5.0), and are third in the conference in that statistic. While outrebounding 17 of their 24 opponents so far this season, the Minutemen have recently turned that statistic into two key victories against Duquesne and Saint Joseph’s, and hope to do the same against George Washington tonight.

The Colonials are seventh in the A-10 in rebounding offense and fifth in rebounding defense, and are third in the conference averaging 13.7 rebounds per game.

In the victory against the Hawks, UMass again outrebounded its opponent, 44-35, with Carter adding 11 while Anthony Gurley had nine, as the Minutemen had 16 points in the paint and six second-chance points.

Against the Dukes, UMass outrebounded Duquesne, 60-33, as redshirt sophomore Sean Carter had his first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 19 rebounds in the victory. This led to 26 points in the paint and 20 second-chance points.

The last time the Minutemen had 60 rebounds in a game was during the 1996 Final Four season against the Hawks, as Marcus Camby had 15 in UMass’ overtime win on Feb. 28.

Three members of the Minutemen are averaging more than four rebounds per game, including Carter (7.1), freshman forward Terrell Vinson (5.5) and redshirt junior center Hashim Bailey (4.9). Carter is now 11th in the A-10 with 178 total rebounds so far this season, and is fourth in offensive rebounding (3.6).

Harris on fire

In his last three games, senior guard Ricky Harris has had his most impressive stretch of his career. While averaging 29.4 points per game in the stretch, he is also averaging 27.4 points per game in his last five games, scoring at least 25 in four of them while averaging 50 percent shooting from the floor.

The Minutemen have won two of their last three games, and are 3-3 in their last six contests. Harris is now second in the conference in scoring behind Xavier’s Jordan Crawford with 19.5 points per game, while Crawford’s average sits at 19.6. Harris has scored 469 points in 24 games this season, while Crawford has scored 470.

Against the Dukes, Harris had 29 points and six assists, and was named the A-10 Player of the Week. He followed that performance up with a 27-point effort against the Hawks, including two assists and two steals.

Harris is now the fourth on the career-scoring list in UMass history with 1,816 career points.

Against the Colonials last season, Harris led all scorers with 19 points, shooting 5-of-8 from 3-point range. The last time both teams met at the Smith Center, Harris had 20 points and hit five shots from beyond the arc in the win.

Camby traded

Former UMass player Marcus Camby was traded Tuesday from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Portland Trail Blazers for guard Steve Blake and forward Travis Outlaw. Camby, a member of the 1996 Final Four team and one of the best players in school history, is second all-time in blocked shots (336).

Camby won the 2006-2007 Defensive Player of the Year Award, leading the NBA in blocked shots per game.

This season, Camby is averaging 7.7 points per game and 12.1 rebounds per game, which is second in the league behind Dwight Howard.

Harris making the most of senior year
By Adam Miller, Massachusetts Daily Collegian Staff, 2/16/2010

Saint Joseph’s coach Phil Martelli said after his team’s loss on Sunday that seniors have a “tattoo” at the end of the year that shows the record of their last season. Ricky Harris is a perfect example of someone who Martelli believes is not yet satisfied with that tattoo.

Harris has scored over 20 points in seven of the last eight games with a 24.6 points per game average on 48.9 percent shooting in that stretch. Sunday was no different as he finished with 27 points on 7-of-15 shooting in the Massachusetts men’s basketball team’s 70-62 win over the Hawks.

“Ricky Harris has embraced this thing as a senior,” Martelli said of Harris’s improved scoring. “As a senior, you can grab it by the throat and not let it get away.”

Before his recent scoring burst, Harris ran into quite a few bumps early in the season. He sprained his ankle during practice and sat out against Grambling State on Dec. 11.

When Harris came back, he wasn’t getting the lift in his shot, which negatively affected his shot. In his first two games back, he averaged 12.5 points per game.

No. 5’s scoring eventually went up, but his shot wasn’t going in. Between Dec. 19 and Jan. 13, he went 5-for-35 from 3-point range.

But after an 11-point performance on Jan. 16 against Temple, Harris has been going to the lane more and hasn’t shot below 40 percent since the loss against the Owls.

Harris said his improved scoring has to do mainly with his comfort level and wanting to help UMass finish the season out on a good note.

“I feel like I’m more relaxed out there and the game is coming to me,” Harris said. “I’m not having to go do stuff that I’m not capable of doing like forcing tough situations on myself.”

His increased scoring numbers haven’t just boosted his scoring average. It has also given the Minutemen (10-15, 4-7 Atlantic 10) help against a conference that is the most competitive it’s been in years.

In the last three games, he scored over 25 points while boosting UMass to an eighth place tie in the A-10.

Harris’s recent scoring surge is inching him closer to more UMass records. After recently passing Rashaun Freeman (1,744 points) on the all-time scoring list, Harris (1,816) needs 90 points to pass Lou Roe and 184 to become the third Minuteman to score 2,000 career points.

Although it is statistically unlikely that he gets to 2,000 points, if Harris can average 18 points over the next five games, he will become the third all-time scorer at UMass.

UMass coach Derek Kellogg said it wasn’t just the scoring that has made the difference. He also believes that Harris turned into a more complete player over the course of the season.

“He’s playing like a senior,” Kellogg said. “Over the stretch where we’ve played better, I think he’s been the most valuable player in the league.”

Over the past few games, Harris’s rebounding numbers went up and he’s become a better defensive player. After the game, the senior captain said he’s been working to improve defensively so that he can help his teammates out.

However, he believes his contribution to the team has been part of a two-way street, especially after the Minutemen lost sophomore David Gibbs for the season with a foot injury.

“I just applaud these guys because they come to practice every single day and work hard for me and the coaching staff,” Harris said.

D.C. game close to home for UMass guard
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/17/2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. - It has started to hit University of Massachusetts senior guard Ricky Harris that his college basketball career is almost over, as he begins to encounter the many lasts he will face over the next few weeks.

One of those is his last college game inside the Beltway, which is a big deal for the Baltimore native. Harris will have many friends and family members in the Smith Center tonight at 7 p.m. when the Minutemen (10-15, 4-7 Atlantic 10) take on George Washington in Washington, D.C.

"I'm starting to get a little sad. But I've got to gut it out," said Harris, who added he is excited to be playing close to home. "I get to go back home finally and see my parents. It's only my second time going. I'll have a lot of people there, so it should be fun."

Each player is allotted complimentary tickets for every road game. Two years ago, Harris had no trouble getting enough when UMass last visited the Colonials.

But he's got competition now. Freshman teammates Terrell Vinson, Javorn Farrell and Raphiael Putney all have roots in the area and also expect to have friends and family in the crowd.

UMass coach Derek Kellogg said he hopes nobody gets over-hyped by playing close to home.

"I remember when I was playing that guys would have rough games when they played at home," Kellogg said. "With so many guys from that area, at least it's not a home game for just one guy. I hope they continue to play a team game, bring energy and play with a high level of intensity."

George Washington coach Karl Hobbs said he will not be sorry to see Harris graduate.

"Ricky Harris is a terrific, terrific player," he said. "He had a great game, particularly in the second half, against us last year. "He more or less willed them to the win. He's capable of willing his team to victory. He's really starting to play well."

The Colonials enter the game after snapping a three-game losing streak with a 78-53 win at Fordham on Saturday. But George Washington has struggled in Atlantic 10 play at 3-7 (13-10 overall) and has lost seven of its last nine games.

"They're in the same position as us, fighting for a seventh or eighth spot," in the conference tournament, Harris said.

The Colonials figure to put pressure on the Minutemen's inexperienced point guards as they lead the league in 8.4 steals per game. Senior forward Damian Hollis leads the Colonials with 14.3 points and five rebounds per game. Freshman guard Lasan Kromah is among the league's better rookies and is averaging 11 points per game.

NOTES: UMass has won the last three games in the series and 10 of the last 13.

Harris scored 19 against George Washington on March 4, 2009, in the Minutemen's final home game of the season.

UMass is now ranked sixth in the nation in offensive rebounding, averaging 15.4 per game.

Harris is No. 8 on UMass career steals list with 140, but he could move up quickly. He's one behind No. 7 Jim McCoy, and two behind Shannon Crooks and Donald Russell who are tied for fifth. No. 4 Mike Williams (145), No. 3 Anthony Anderson (150) and No. 2 Monty Mack (154) also are potentially within reach.

UMass Falls At George Washington, 66-60
Minutemen host Saint Louis on Sunday at 4 p.m.
From UMass Athletics, 2/17/2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. - UMass couldn't get over the hump in the final minutes, cutting the lead to one or two on several occasions, but George Washington prevailed, 66-60 at the Smith Center on Wednesday night. The game was pivotal in the A-10 standings as the Colonials (14-10 overall) moved ahead of UMass (10-16 overall) by a half-game with a 4-7 record to the Minutemen's 4-8. Junior Anthony Gurley led UMass with 16 points and freshman Freddie Riley added 15, all in the first half. Ricky Harris added 10.

Colonial freshman Lesan Kromah was the difference as he netted a game-high 22 points including five 3-pointers. Joseph Katuka had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

After getting to within one at 54-53 on a Sean Carter alley-oop dunk with 5:16 left, GW scored the next four points on lay-ups by Kromah and Katuka to take a 58-53 lead with 3:12 left in the second. Gurley bombed his fourth 3-pointer of the half to cut the margin to 58-56 with 2:21 left. After GW went back up by five, Harris nailed a three with 21 seconds left to pull within two, but two late free throws and a steal gave the Colonials the win.

UMass didn't make a basket for the first 10:49 of the second half, missing its nine initial field goals. The Colonials took the largest lead of the game on a 3-pointer by Kromah with 11:33 left in the second half, for a 43-36 lead. The freshman added another trey to extend the lead to eight, midway through the second half. Anthony Gurley finally broke the slump with back-to-back 3-pointers for UMass making it 50-44 GW with 8:23 left in the second half.

Gurley scored 11 consecutive points for UMass to bring the Minutemen within one, 50-49 with 7:04 left in the second half.

The first half was back-and-forth all the way (16 lead changes) with neither team leading by more than five points. After GW took the largest lead at 26-21 thanks to a five-minute scoreless drought for the Minutemen, UMass scored seven points in a row to retake the lead, 28-26 on Riley's fourth 3-pointer of the first half. The Minutemen were up 31-29 at intermission thanks to 15 points from Riley.

UMass freshman Javorn Farrell was ejected with 17:45 left in the second half after he threw a punch at a GW player after the referees reviewed the play on a video monitor.

UMass' next game is Sunday, Feb. 21 vs. Saint Louis at 4 p.m., at the Mullins Center.

George Washington edges Minutemen
By David Brinch, Massachusetts Daily Collegian Staff, 2/18/2010

The strongest part of the Massachusetts basketball team’s game was nonexistent against George Washington Wednesday night.

In a highly physical game, the Minutemen (10-16, 4-8 Atlantic 10) were outrebounded, 55-34, by the Colonials, who went on to win, 66-60.

“There were a lot of differences, but that was the main culprit in the game,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “Those second chance points were daggers, and they looked like the more physical team.”

GW grabbed 26 offensive rebounds on the game, turning their boards into 26 second chance points, while UMass had 11 offensive rebounds.

Along with the rebounds, the Minutemen went 13-of-23 from the free-throw line, while the Colonials shot just over 50 percent from the charity stripe.

“I guess it was physical game, when both teams were on the 1-and-1’s, but we got out-hustled,” Kellogg said. “But, we didn’t quit, but with not quitting you need to make those plays, and they executed down the stretch.”

The Minutemen committed 30 personal fouls, including 19 in the second half, and had three charges called against them after they made all three baskets.

Freshman forward Javorn Farrell, playing in front of friends and family from his native Maryland, was ejected early in the second half for throwing a punch at a GW player.

Freshman guard Freddie Riley led the Minutemen with 15 points, all in the first half, going 5-for-9 from the field and 4-of-8 from 3-point range, while redshirt junior guard Anthony Gurley had 16 points off the bench.

Senior guard Ricky Harris was held to 10 points after strong offensive efforts in the Minutemen’s last two victories, while freshman forward Terrell Vinson added 10. Centers Sean Carter and Hashim Bailey each had six rebounds in the loss.

“We did that to Duquesne last week, but tonight, we had it done to us,” Kellogg said.

The Minutemen were dominant on the glass, grabbing 60 rebounds in the victory over the Dukes, while leading the A-10 in offensive rebounds.

UMass was up by two points at halftime, 31-29, but found itself playing catch-up again late in the second half, after 16 lead changes and neither team being up by more than five points in the first half.

After a scoring drought that lasted five minutes, Riley put the team back on top with his fourth 3-pointer of the half. Riley could not get open looks in the second half, as GW narrowed in on him, along with Harris.

“As teams key in on Ricky, Freddie and Anthony and some other guys are going to get some open looks, they just need to convert,” Kellogg said.

In the second half, the Minutemen missed eight of their first nine shots, but Gurley scored 11 straight points for UMass to bring the team back to within one with just over seven minutes to go.

UMass again cut the deficit to one, 54-53, on a Carter alley-oop dunk from Harris, but GW scored the next four points before Gurley hit another 3-pointer. The Colonials went up by five, but Harris hit a big 3-pointer with 21 seconds left, but the Minutemen could not grab rebounds, as two free throws and a steal cost the Minutemen the game.

The Minutemen return to the Mullins Center this Saturday when they host Saint Louis at 4 p.m.

The Billikens are coming off a come-from-behind double-overtime victory over Dayton last Sunday, and are in fifth place in the A-10 with a 7-3 conference record.

SLU leads the all-time series, 5-3, and defeated the Minutemen, 69-64, last season in Saint Louis.

The Billikens are one of the youngest teams in America, with 11 of their 12 players being underclassmen, and are led by Kwamain Mitchell, who averages 16.1 points per game.

Minutemen fall at the end to Colonials
From Daily Hampshire Gazette, 2/18/2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rebounding and second-half surges have been the bread-and-butter for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team in recent weeks, but Wednesday night it was George Washington dominating the glass and late-game action.

The Colonials (14-10, 4-7 Atlantic 10) defeated the Minutemen 66-60 at the Smith Center.

"We let this one get away," UMass senior guard Ricky Harris said. "We got a little content winning two games in a row."

With 20.1 seconds left in the game and George Washington leading by three points, the Colonials did not put anyone on the blocks as Tony Taylor attempted his second free throw, choosing instead to drop everyone else back to play defense.

But after his free throw kicked off the side of the rim, Taylor raced in and beat four UMass players to the ball that was bouncing toward the end line.

Taylor grabbed the ball and launched it back into play, where teammate Lasan Kromah alertly sprinted up to get it.

The Minutemen were forced to foul and Kromah made both to stretch George Washington's lead to two possessions and clinch the win.

"How does that happen? They had nobody in there," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "That was a big play. It was unacceptable to have that happen at that juncture."

Harris agreed.

"That was a rebound we definitely had to have," Harris said. "We had time to get a shot off to tie the game."

The play was the most glaring example of an extremely rough game on the glass for the Minutemen who were outrebounded 55-34. The Colonials turned 26 offensive rebounds into 26 second-chance points.

Including the one by Taylor, George Washington had three offensive rebounds in the final two minutes that they turned into points.

"That was a tough game because it meant a lot. There was a lot riding on it for both teams," Kellogg said.

UMass fell to 10th in the Atlantic 10 at 4-8 (10-16 overall).

The Colonials looked poised to pull away when they stretched their lead to 50-41 with just under nine minutes remaining as the Minutemen had not yet made a field goal in the second half.

But Anthony Gurley, who had missed eight of his first nine shots caught fire, and scored the next 11 points for UMass on three 3-pointers and a mid-range jumper to bring the Minutemen within 50-49.

But they never quite closed the gap as Gurley cooled off quickly and finished with 16 points.

Freddie Riley had a similar hot streak in the first half with four 3-pointers and a three-point play to finish with 15 points, all before intermission. Harris and Terrell Vinson each added 10.

Kromah led George Washington with 22 points, and Joseph Katuka added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

UMass hosts Saint Louis at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Farrell ejected, suspended
From Daily Hampshire Gazette, 2/18/2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. - University of Massachusetts freshman Javorn Farrell was ejected for fighting in the second half of Wednesday night's loss at George Washington and in accordance with NCAA rules, he will be suspended for the next game when the Minutemen host Saint Louis at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Farrell swung an arm as he chased a ball that went out of bounds with 17:45 left in the 66-60 loss. It was unclear whether he hit anyone.

According to the NCAA's Rule 4, Section 26, "A fight is a confrontation involving one or more players wherein (but not limited to) a fist, hand knee or leg is used to combatively strike the other individual."

Rule 10, Section 7, Article 2 states: "The first time an individual participates in a fight during the season the individual shall be suspended from participating in the team's next regular-season game."

If Farrell is called for another fighting technical this season, he would be suspended for the remainder of the season.

Originally there was no call on the play, but the officials checked the replay, saw the infraction and assessed a technical and the ejection.

UMass coach Derek Kellogg said he had not seen a replay.

"They didn't let me look at the monitor so I haven't seen it," Kellogg said. "It was unfortunate that it happened."

The incident sparked two other confrontations as Kellogg and Colonials coach Karl Hobbs shouted at each other briefly before Kellogg extended a handshake.

There were quite a few UMass supporters among the 1,646 fans at the Smith Center and some of them were seated next to the George Washington student section. After the incident there was shouting between the two groups before Smith Center staff intervened.

Farrell's absence was particularly damaging because he is the Minutemen's top one-on-one defender who guards backcourt and frontcourt players, and also the secondary ball-handler.

"His toughness would have helped us in the second half," Kellogg said. "He does come up with loose balls and loose rebounds and we didn't do those things in the second half. He would have helped us."

Fouls marred the entire second half as 33 were called after intermission. Colonials leading scorer Damian Hollis played just 14 minutes before fouling out with nine points, while Hashim "Big City" Bailey also picked up five whistles.

Sophomore center Sean Carter was also in foul trouble the entire game.

Hobbs, who complained to the officials throughout, opted for diplomacy afterward.

"I thought both teams were playing very aggressive basketball and the game was officiated very well," Hobbs said.

HARRIS STREAK SURVIVES - A 3-pointer by Ricky Harris with 21.2 seconds left was his only field goal of the second half. It extended his streak of scoring in double figures to 36 as it gave him 10 points.
