lthough getting an NCAA Tournament berth is out of the question, the Massachusetts men�s basketball team still has something to fight for: making the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
The Minutemen (10-17, 4-9 A-10) are 1.5 games ahead of Saint Joseph�s, who is currently in 13th place. The top 12 teams in the conference will play in the A-10 Tournament.
UMass is coming off of two straight losses to George Washington and Saint Louis, and hopes to knock Dayton out of its chances to make the NCAA Tournament after a week of rest.
The Flyers (18-9, 7-6 A-10) are also coming off of two straight losses to Duquesne and No. 18 Temple. Their losing streak hasn�t only hurt their chances of making it past the A-10 Tournament, it has also given the Minutemen a slight chance of finishing the league in seventh place.
If UMass can beat Dayton, it will be two games behind the Flyers with games against La Salle and Rhode Island. But before the Minutemen can worry about any of that, they have to overcome playing in a hostile environment.
The Flyers� home-court is one of the few arenas with NBA-caliber facilities and holds 13,500 people. UMass coach Derek Kellogg expects the arena to be packed and rowdy.
Dayton media relations reports the game is sold out, the fourth time this season that the team has reached maximum capacity for a home game.
�It�s a huge homecourt advantage,� Kellogg said.
Despite having a high RPI and wins against quality opponents, Dayton�s performance in the A-10 schedule has put itself in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament. It is currently the only team with six conference losses still on the bubble, and suffered a devastating loss earlier this season to the Hawks.
For Kellogg, it means his team will have to work harder to avoid its 10th in-conference loss.
�The one thing you�re going to know is that they�re going to bring maximum effort and play as hard as they possibly can, because when you have a berth like that at stake, that�s what they�re striving for,� Kellogg said.
At this point of the season, Kellogg has two objectives in mind. The first is to make sure his senior captain, Ricky Harris, leaves UMass on a positive note.
Kellogg also wants to allow the future of the Minutemen to gain experience heading into next year. Since losing sophomore David Gibbs to a broken foot, Kellogg has been starting three freshmen, and at times has played four at the same time.
�I�m interested to see where the young guys are,� Kellogg said. �Sometimes, young [players], especially freshmen, either kick it into high gear at this time of the season, or they hit a wall. I think my guys are ready to go.�
Unlike the last game the Minutemen had against the Billikens, the Flyers are an experienced team with seven seniors and four juniors. One of those juniors is Chris Wright (14.6 points per game, 7.4 rebounds per game), who leads Dayton in scoring and rebounds.
He also gives the team a strong defensive presence, averaging 1.4 blocks per game.
As a team, the Flyers (44.1) have the fifth best field-goal shooting percentage in the A-10. While their offense isn�t going to scare anyone, they have allowed 61.2 ppg this season. The only teams allowing fewer points are the three currently tied for first place in the conference (the Owls, SLU and Richmond).
�We need to play smart and make sure we take care of the basketball, because they�re really good when they can pressure you,� Kellogg said.

MHERST - The University of Massachusetts will try to clinch a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament while Dayton tries to boost its case for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament when the teams meet at 7 p.m. Saturday at UD Arena.
The Minutemen (10-17, 4-9 Atlantic 10) can assure themselves of making the A-10 Tournament and potentially help their seed with a win. But UMass coach Derek Kellogg said he is most concerned about getting his team playing better.
"We had a rough stretch. I just want to play well down there," he said. "It'll be a difficult game to win. I think we can win, but I want to play well first and foremost and get over that end-of-the season hump."
The Flyers, who were picked first in the A-10 preseason poll and entered the season ranked in the top 25, have been a disappointment and are on the NCAA Tournament bubble.
At 7-6 in A-10 play (18-9 overall), they are in seventh place in the conference and almost out of contention for a top-four finish and the valuable bye in the first round of the conference tournament.
Dayton has lost three of its last four games, but unfortunately for the Minutemen none of those losses were at UD Arena. The Flyers are 13-1 in their home gym, with the lone loss coming to Rhode Island on Jan. 26.
"That's a tough place to play," said UMass senior Ricky Harris, who respects the venue despite never having lost there. "They have like 14,000 people there screaming and yelling.
"They have a good team," he added. "I love playing at Dayton. The fans make it a great atmosphere. It kind of reminds me of Freedom Hall."
UMass has actually had more success than most at UD Arena. The Minutemen have won two straight there, ending long Flyer winning streaks both times. Overall, UMass has won four straight against the Flyers in three different buildings with wins at UD Arena, the Mullins Center and the MassMutual Center.
Kellogg has never been to UD Arena because Dayton did not join the conference until after he graduated from UMass in 1995.
"I've heard it's a pretty tough place to play. I know they're averaging 12,981 fans per game which gives them a nice little home court advantage," Kellogg said. "I know that they're 5-1 in the league at home. It's obviously a tough road game against a team that's still fighting for an NCAA berth. I'm sure they're hungry."
Chris Wright leads the Flyers with 14.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Chris Johnson is next with 12.2 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
FARRELL STARTING - After serving his one-game suspension for throwing a punch in the Minutemen's 66-60 loss to George Washington on Feb. 17, freshman Javorn Farrell will return to the starting lineup, Kellogg said.

AYTON, Ohio - UMass' recent dominance over Dayton came to end on Saturday night before a sellout crowd at UD Arena as the Minutemen dropped a 96-68 decision to the Flyers. The Minutemen had won the last four meetings with Dayton dating to 2005 including two wins as UD Arena. Over the last four years Dayton is 62-6 at home with two of the losses to the Minutemen. UMass falls to 10-18 overall, 4-10 in the Atlantic 10 while Dayton is now 19-9 and 8-6.
The Flyers made a season-best 13 3-pointers and shot 46 from beyond the arc. Dayton had a well-balanced attack led by Mickey Perry (career-high tying 15 points) and Chris Wright (14 points). Ten different Flyers scored in the game, with nine scoring in the first half, alone. A total of six scored in double-figures with Chris Johnson (11), Marcus Johnson (11), Rob Lowery (13) and Devin Searcy (10) also breaking 10.
Freshman Terrell Vinson led UMass with 16, his third game in a row in double-figures. Freshman Sampson Carter also had his best scoring game in more than two months with 10. Freddie Riley tallied 12 on four 3-pointers and Anthony Gurley had 10 points. Senior Ricky Harris saw his 37-game streak of scoring in double-figures end as he had just nine.
Dayton took control of the game midway through the first half on back-to-back 3-pointers by Paul Williams and Chris Johnson to take an 18-11 lead. The advantage ballooned on another set of 3-pointers just before halftime as Marcus Johnson and Williams canned treys in the final 1:22 before intermission.
The Flyers were red hot from the floor in the first half, shooting 57 percent in the first 20 minutes as Dayton led 43-31. The 43 points were more in one half than the Flyers scored all game in their last contest at Temple (losing 49-41). Dayton made 6-of-13 from 3-point range with nine different players scoring in the half.
UMass was hit hard by foul trouble in the first half as both Vinson and Javorn Farrell picked up three fouls with more than four minutes left in the first half. Vinson topped UMass with seven first-half points.
In the second half, UMass came out strong with Vinson scoring the team's first seven points including an emphatic dunk - the first of his college career. The lead was trimmed to nine at 54-45 with 14 minutes left as UMass went on a 10-0 run. That was ended by a Wright fastbreak slam dunk with 13:19 left in the second.
The Dayton lead was cut to eight on several more occasions by the Minutemen. Sampson Carter showed his prowess with several nice baskets but it wasn't enough in the end. The Flyers continued to pour it on and took a 20-point lead on a Perry bomb with 6:48 left in the second half, making it 78-58. Perry added another minutes later for an 83-59 edge. He hit four second-half 3-pointers.
The Minutemen play their final regular-season road game on Wednesday at La Salle. The home finale is set for one week from today against Rhode Island on March 6 at 4 p.m.

# Ricky Harris continues to stand fourth in career scoring at UMass with nine in the game and now has 1,858. No. 3 on the list is Lou Roe (1,905).
# Harris continues to stand fourth in career field goal attempts at UMass with 1,454, after he took 15 shots in the game. Next on the list at No. 3 is Lorenzo Sutton (1,518).
# Harris also is also seventh in career made field goals list with three today. He now has 610 in his career. He stands behind No. 6 Lou Roe (661).

# Ricky Harris did not score in double-figures for the first time this season, the first time in 26 games he has played. He also saw his 37-game overall streak end. assachusetts men�s basketball coach Derek Kellogg knew that playing an away game against Dayton was going to test his young team. He also knew that with an NCAA Tournament bid on the line, the Flyers were going to be difficult to beat.
What he didn�t know was just how difficult they would be.
UMass (10-18, 4-10 Atlantic 10) dropped its third-straight game in a 96-68 loss to Dayton on Saturday. It was the worst defeat for the Minutemen since Nov. 28, when they lost to Michigan State by 38 points.
Although Dayton didn�t take UMass out of the game until the second half, the Minutemen never had a lead past their first two baskets of the game. The Flyers were up by 33 points with two minutes, 34 seconds left in the game after Rob Lowery stole the ball from senior Ricky Harris and converted on a lay-up.
�For their team and their program to come home in a game which I think was somewhat of a must-win for them to play the way they did was a testament to their maturity and their age,� Kellogg said.
Dayton�s offense controlled much of the game, shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 46.4 percent from 3-point range.
Six different Flyers scored in double-figures. Mickey Perry scored a team-high 15 points and finished with five 3-pointers while forward Chris Wright added 14 points.
Meanwhile, Harris (nine points, 3-of-15 shooting), who recently has been on a scoring surge, had his worst offensive performance since Jan. 24, 2009 against La Salle where he finished with six points. Five of his points came in the first half.
The Flyers (19-9, 8-6 A-10) contained Harris by rotating three guards and made him a focus of the defense. As a result, the team captain also led his team with three turnovers.
�I thought they did a very good job of forcing him into some tough plays,� Kellogg said.
Despite a rough night for Harris, Kellogg was encouraged by his freshmen�s performances. Terrell Vinson (16 points) led the team with 60 percent shooting while Freddie Riley (12 points) had a hot shooting night from beyond the arc with 4-of-6 shooting.
�When your four freshmen are your four leading scorers, that�s a good sign for the future, but when you�re playing that many, sometimes it doesn�t work out that well right off the bat,� Kellogg said.
The Minutemen will play their last road game of the season on March 3 against La Salle, who is also fighting for a spot in the A-10 Tournament, before ending the season at home on Saturday against Rhode Island.
Game notes
Center Hashim Bailey didn�t play in the loss to Dayton. AYTON, Ohio - Guards Ricky Harris of the University of Massachusetts and Rob Lowery of Dayton spend time together working out during the summer in their native Baltimore.
They are close friends, but Lowery was much too close for Harris' comfort when they met on the court Saturday night at sold-out University of Dayton Arena.
Harris is the Minutemen's leading scorer and the second-leading scorer in the Atlantic 10 at 19.3 points per game, and he had averaged 24.2 points in the past five contests. But Lowery and teammates London Warren and Mickey Perry were on a mission not to let Harris take an open shot.
Harris took 15 mostly contested shots, made three and scored a season-low nine points. It was the first time in 37 games that the senior failed to score in double figures, and the Flyers made the young Minutemen pay with a 96-68 victory that kept them from clinching a spot in the Atlantic 10 tournament.
"Coach (Brian Gregory) told me, #You have to contain him. You can't stop him,'" Lowery said. "One guy can't guard him. We have to shrink the court, and the team has to guard him. We just did a good job on him."
Lowery defended Harris to start the game, but it wasn't long before the UMass guard had seen Warren, then Perry. The Flyers substitute often and rotate as many as 11 players.
"It kind of wore me down a little bit, because a fresh new body was out there every single time out," Harris said. "To go up against one of your friends is good in a way, but then again you want to beat each other so bad. Tonight Rob got the best of me and my teammates."
Dayton (19-9, 8-6 A-10) needed this win after back-to-back conference losses to keep alive its hopes of making the NCAA tournament. The Flyers appeared well on their way to the victory until UMass (10-18, 4-10 A-10) got a fast-break layup from Javorn Farrell to cut its deficit to 58-50 with 12 minutes, two seconds left.
But that's where the Minutemen's youthful energy was not enough. Dayton outscored them 38-18 the rest of the game.
Flyers forward Chris Wright, who hit his average of 14 points, got loose for a couple of play-of-the-day caliber dunks. But it was some uncharacteristic accuracy from 3-point range by Dayton that put the Minutemen away.
Lowery, who scored 13 points, increased the lead to 67-54 with a 3-pointer, then it was the Perry show. Perry made four 3-pointers during a four-minute stretch that pushed the Flyers' lead to 86-60 with 4:22 to play.
Perry led Dayton with 15 points on five-of-seven shooting from 3-point range. Lowery made three of five, scored 13 points and the Flyers made a season-high 13-of-28 3-pointers.
"They're a good home team and they've got 13,000 people standing behind them," Harris said. "When you're at home the ball normally falls on your side."
Dayton is 14-1 at home this season, the only loss coming on a last-second shot to Rhode Island. The Minutemen had won their past two trips to Dayton and had beaten the Flyers four straight times, but that streak was broken before 13,435 fans Saturday night.
Despite the final margin, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said he was encouraged by what his freshmen contributed. Terrell Vinson scored a team-high 16 points, Freddie Riley had 12, Carter Sampson had 10 and Farrell scored nine.
"I thought we did some very good things in spurts, but we've been that way pretty much in conference play," Kellogg said. "We've outplayed some of the best teams in the conference for say 12 minutes of a 40-minute game, which obviously is not good enough."
