he Massachusetts mens basketball team needs to do one thing in order to make it into the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Win sooner, rather than later.
The Minutemen (10-18, 4-10 A-10) take on La Salle in their final regular season road contest this Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Tom Gola Arena, in hopes of clinching the final spot in the conference tournament.
UMass can clinch a spot with a victory over the Explorers (11-17, 3-11 A-10) or with a win over Rhode Island on Saturday, two opponents the Minutemen have already faced this season but have had little success against.
If the team loses both games, it could get in if Saint Josephs loses either of its remaining games against George Washington or the Explorers. Both the Explorers and Hawks are tied for 12th place in the A-10, while the Minutemen sit in 11th place.
The two most active scorers in A-10 history will square off in UMass Ricky Harris and the Explorers Rodney Green, who have scored 1,858 and 1,872 points, respectively, throughout their collegiate careers.
Harris is second in the A-10 in scoring average with 18.9 points per game, while Green is third with 18.3.
The Minutemen saw their four-game winning streak against Dayton come to an end on Saturday in the way of a 96-68 defeat.
The Flyers made a season-best 13 3-pointers while shooting 46 percent from the field, while freshman forward Terrell Vinson led the Minutemen with 16 points. Harris saw his stretch of 37-straight games scoring in double figures come to an end, as he was held to nine points, a season low.
The Flyers are in seventh place in the A-10, right behind the Rams, and have an 8-6 conference record.
The Explorers are coming off a 65-53 loss to No. 20 Temple on Sunday, as Green scored 21 points on 10-of-23 shooting in 29 minutes.
UMass and the Explorers have met 23 times, with the Minutemen holding the all-time series advantage, 13-10. But the Minutemen have dropped their past three games against La Salle, including this year on Jan. 10 at Springfields MassMutual Center.
The Explorers used an 18-5 run in the second half to get rid of a seven point deficit, as UMass was outscored 16-10 in the final five minutes of play. The Minutemen were coming off their first A-10 victory of the year against Fordham, and went on to drop its next four contests.
Freshman guard Freddie Riley led all scorers with 22 points, going 6-of-14 from 3-point range, while Harris finished with 17 points. Green was held to 17 points, but La Salle used the contest to give it momentum in a win against GW three days later.
Along with Green, who is third in the conference in assists with 4.3 per game, the Explorers are led by Kimmani Barrett (13.3 ppg) and Aaric Murray. Murray is 14th in the league with 6.5 rpg.

MHERST - It's not quite a playoff game but both teams need a victory at 7 tonight when the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team plays La Salle at Tom Gola Arena.
The Minutemen (10-18, 4-10 Atlantic 10) need either a win tonight or Saturday at home against Rhode Island or a loss by Saint Joseph's in either of its final two games (tonight at George Washington, Saturday vs. La Salle) to get a berth in the conference tournament.
"It's their senior night, so its going to be a tough game and both of us need to win," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said about tonight's game against the Explorers. "Both teams would love an opportunity to prolong their season a little bit."
The Explorers (11-17, 3-11) could win tonight and still get left out of the A-10 Tournament if they fall to the Hawks Saturday and Minutemen upset the Rams Saturday.
"It's obviously a big game in the standings," La Salle coach John Giannini said. "Defensively both teams have to put forth great efforts because I think it will come down to shooting."
The Explorers beat the Minutemen 80-74 at the MassMutual Center on Jan. 10, but a rash of injuries has gradually eroded La Salle. Ruben Guillandeaux has been out almost all season. Kimmani Barrett suffered a foot injury against UMass and has not played since. He is not expected to play tonight and the best-case scenario is a return in the A-10 Tournament if the Explorers qualify.
Yves Mekongo, who has a finger injury and missed the last five games, could be back with a cast tonight but his status is uncertain.
La Salle enters the game having lost eight straight without those three players who all averaged scoring in double figures last year.
Without them, the Explorers have been forced to start a big lineup with point guard and leading scorer 6-foot-5 Rodney Green (18.3 points per game, 4.3 assists) as the only player smaller than 6-foot-8. He is joined by Jerrell Williams, Steve Weingarten and Devon White, who are all 6-foot-8, and 6-foot-10 center Aaric Murray.
The Minutemen could be smaller at every position.
"They do a great job of posting up their mismatches," Kellogg said. "They hit the boards as hard as anyone in the league and play a matchup zone which is difficult because of their size."
La Salle's bench is fairly thin as freshmen guards Parrish Grant and T.T. Carey are averaging less than six points per game between them.
Kellogg said he hopes his team would be able to use its depth by staying out of foul trouble, which has been an issue lately.
"I have to teach my guys to play without getting into foul trouble," he said. "In the last few games, a lot of my key young guys were in foul trouble. I have to work with them on how to be smart on the floor."
Kellogg said he continues to see signs of improvement. "The progression has been pretty good and I think they can make another jump," he added. "I'm just not sure there's enough time left in the season for them to make the next step forward that I really expect out of those guys."
CHASING ROE, GREEN - UMass senior guard Ricky Harris enters the final month of his career ranked No. 4 on the Minutemen's all-time scoring list with 1,858 points. He needs 48 points in the final two regular-season games to pass No. 3 Lou Roe (1,905).
Harris has a chance to leave as the Atlantic 10's leading scorer over the past four seasons, but he enters the game 14 points behind Green, who has scored 1,872 points for La Salle since 2006. The Minutemen would likely have to reach the postseason and last longer than the Explorers for Harris to pass Green.

HILADELPHIA, Pa. - Despite a career-high eight 3-pointers from Ricky Harris, the UMass men's basketball team fell, 89-78, to La Salle on Wednesday night at Tom Gola Arena. The senior guard scored 31 points, while the Explorers' Rodney Green tallied 30 in a clash of the Atlantic 10's top two active career scorers.
La Salle led throughout the second half, but UMass cut the deficit to four on a Harris 3-ball with just under eight minutes to go. La Salle however, was able to hold off the Minutemen, with Green hitting key free throws down the stretch.
UMass attempted a school record 39 3-pointers, making 13 from beyond the arc (33.3 percent) and shot 41 percent overall. The Explorers shot 50 percent from the field and were 5-for-14 from 3-point range. La Salle scored 28 points at the free throw stripe, led by Green going 13-for-16.
Besides his 31 points and eight 3-pointers, Harris finished with eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
Green continues to be the A-10's active career scoring leader with 1,902 points while Harris is second with 1,889 heading into his final regular-season game.
The Explorers built a lead as large as 13 in the second half as Green scored 17 of his points in the second stanza. Steve Weingarten scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half including 7-of-8 from the foul line.
La Salle's Jerrell Williams (14) and Aaric Murray also added 13 points.
UMass didn't have a player in double-figures other than Harris. Sampson Carter made and attempted a career-high 7-of-8 free throws and finished with nine points. Freddie Riley also had nine points, making three 3-pointers.
La Salle took a 40-32 halftime lead as the Explorers shot 48.4 percent in the first half, while the Minutemen struggled from the floor, making just 11-of-32 shots (34 percent). Harris scored all 12 of his points on four 3-pointers in the first 12 minutes of half. As a team, UMass was just 4-of-16 from beyond the arc with Anthony Gurley and Freddie Riley combining to go 0-of-8 in the first 20 minutes.
Terrell Vinson suffered an injury early in the second half and didn't return.
A win in Wednesday's game, or a Saint Joseph's loss, would have clinched the Minutemen a berth in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, but UMass' loss combined with the Hawks defeating George Washington, 80-71, means UMass' fate will be decided in Saturday's regular season finale.
UMass closes the regular season at home on Saturday when they host Rhode Island at 4 p.m. It will be Senior Day at the Mullins Center, with Harris and Lex Mongo to be honored. Its Maroon Mania, where special T-Shirts will be given to fans.

he Massachusetts mens basketball team might now have to try to clinch an Atlantic 10 Tournament birth without one of its best players, and could rely on another team losing just to get by.
The Minutemen (10-19, 4-11 A-10) fell to La Salle Wednesday night, 89-78, at the Tom Gola Arena, and lost forward Terrell Vinson to a left ankle injury early on in the second half.
UMass must now win against Rhode Island Saturday or have Saint Josephs lose at home to the Explorers.
The Hawks defeated George Washington on Wednesday night, hurting UMass postseason hopes, as the Minutemen could have clinched with an SJU loss.
Im not a big man on excuses, but hes become a guy we rely on, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said of Vinson. He has been rebounding the ball, and he is one of our tougher players, and anyone who has watched our team knows he is one of our primary options, so I hope his ankle is alright for Saturday.
Vinson finished the night with eight points on 4-of-4 shooting, while grabbing three rebounds in 11 minutes before leaving the game.
We dont really know too much, I think it was a sprain, so Im happy it wasnt severe, Kellogg said. We need him to get better and to establish himself because he is one of the better freshmen in the league, but we made runs without him.
Senior guard Ricky Harris led the game with 31 points, including hitting a career-high eight 3-pointers, while A-10 leading scorer Rodney Green scored 30 for the Explorers in a match-up featuring the two leading scorers on the Explorers Senior Night.
Rickys a very emotional guy, and it was a tough loss, and he wants a chance to play in an A-10 tournament his senior year, Kellogg said. He gave it everything he had, and I gave him the green light, and he deserves it. Nineteen threes are a few to many, but he had a lot of good looks.
Harris went 11-of-26 from the field and 8-of-19 from beyond the arc while finishing with seven rebounds, three steals and five assists.
With Harris 3-pointers, the Minutemen set a school record of 39 attempts, while shooting 41 percent from the field.
Along with Harris, freshman guard Freddie Riley and Sampson Carter had nine points each, while Sean Carter and Anthony Gurley had seven and eight points respectively.
Im frustrated with the way the outcome went, and there were a few plays we didnt come up with the ball or make the right play, Kellogg said. We pride ourselves on making it to the free throw line and we didnt do that tonight.
The Minutemen went 11-of-19 from the line, while the Explorers were 28-of-38. La Salle also scored 22 points off turnovers and 38 points in the paint, while scoring 14 fast break points.
The Minutemen complete their regular season when they take on Rhode Island at the Mullins Center this Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Rams are coming off an 80-58 win over Charlotte on Wednesday evening as Delroy James paced URI with 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Keith Cothran led the way with 18 points.
UMass fell to the Rams back on Feb. 6, 93-85, as Harris led the way with 32 points. The Minutemen erased a late 24-point deficit, scoring 21 points late in the second half to come within six points, but could not break even.
This will be the 134th meeting between the two teams, with the Minutemen winning 32 of the past 45 meetings, including four of the last six.
Gurley was second on the team with 15, while Carter added 11 in the loss against URI.

HILADELPHIA - Things just got very interesting for the University of Massachusetts basketball team.
After Wednesday night's 89-78 loss at La Salle, the Minutemen (10-19, 4-11 Atlantic 10) must now either beat Rhode Island in Saturday's regular-season finale or hope that the Explorers lose to Saint Joseph's if they want to advance to the Atlantic 10 Tournament next week.
To qualify for the postseason, UMass needed a win in one of its last two regular-season games or at least one loss by the Hawks. However, St. Joseph's (10-19, 4-11 A-10) won 80-71 at George Washington Wednesday night and will host La Salle Saturday.
If the Explorers win Saturday, both they and the Minutemen would make the conference tournament.
"We just have to execute," UMass guard Ricky Harris said. "Every play is important, every possession is important. We've got to come ready to play.
"Rhode Island is a good team, one of the top teams in our conference," he added. "It'll be our senior night, and we just have to come out ready to play and go hard."
The two active career scoring leaders in the Atlantic 10 in Harris and Rodney Green of La Salle were matched up Wednesday night, and they did not disappoint. Harris scored 31 points and Green had 30.
The difference was that Green had help. Jerrell Williams had 14 points, and Aaric Murray, an A-10 rookie of the year candidate, and Steve Weingarten each added 13 points for the Explorers (12-17, 4-11 A-10).
But no other Minuteman reached double figures. Freddie Riley and Sampson Carter each had nine points, and Anthony Gurley and Terrell Vinson contributed eight apiece. Vinson left the game with a sprained ankle with 17 minutes, 15 seconds left and did not return, but the 6-foot-7 freshman forward said he hopes to play Saturday against Rhode Island.
The 31 points by Harris were four short of his career high. The 6-2 senior now has 1,889 career points.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said he wished Harris had more help against La Salle and expects to see that Saturday.
"We're going to try to give a great effort for Ricky, his last home game in a UMass uniform," Kellogg said. "He deserves that our other guys play well for him, and I told them that in the locker room."
Harris simply got tired down the stretch against the Explorers. He shot 11-of-26 overall and 8-of-19 from 3-point range.
The 39 3-point attempts by the Minutemen set a school record. The previous record of 38 was set in the season opener at Central Florida.
UMass trailed 40-32 at halftime after struggling to get any consistent offensive flow against La Salle's zone in the first 20 minutes. The Minutemen chucked up 16 shots from 3-point range and hit just four of them, and when they tried to dribble into the teeth of that zone or pass across it, they handed over nine turnovers which the Explorers converted into 11 points.
La Salle led by as many as 13 points in the second half before UMass cut the deficit to 63-59 when Harris hit a 3-pointer with 7:55 to go But the Minutemen never got any closer than that.
"We just didn't make plays, and really at some inopportune times and I'm just hoping these guys can turn it around for Saturday," Kellogg said.
Harris does not want to see his career come to an end this weekend, and he would like to get a UMass team that starts three freshmen and a sophomore to tournament play.
"I just want to give them a chance to see what it's like to play in the Atlantic 10 Tournament," Harris said. "Hopefully it'll give us a chance to make a run. You never know.
"Something could happen for us or turn it around for us, and we could make a run," he added. "You don't want to end your season on a bad note at the end of the regular season."
