t may have just snuck into the Atlantic 10 Tournament, but that is no discouragement for the Massachusetts mens basketball team.
Despite holding the No. 11-seed the second to last seed in the tournament based on their regular season conference record, the Minutemen (11-19, 5-11 A-10) are looking at tonights 7 p.m. opening round matchup at Charlotte as a new beginning.
We put the struggles behind us and Coach [Derek Kellogg] told us this is a new season now, Javorn Farrell said after Saturdays victory over Rhode Island. I think anything is possible now.
The 49ers (19-11, 9-7 A-10), who hold the No. 6-seed in the conference tournament, took the earlier game of the year at UMass, 72-58, back on Jan. 30. The win was the fifth win of a seven-game winning streak for Charlotte, but after the streak it struggled as it dropped six of its final seven games of the regular season.
The winner of the contest will advance to Atlantic City, where the A-10 Tournament will resume on Friday, and face No. 3 Richmond at 9 p.m.
For UMass, not only will it be trying to overcome the past in terms of this season, but also its past struggles in past A-10 Tournaments. Not since 2002 have the Minutemen won a game in the tournament, a streak of seven-straight losses.
Even with the odds against them, Ricky Harris and the Minutemen have confidence in themselves heading into the tournament, in large part to Saturdays victory.
I think we can make a run at it because I think we havent really been blown out by a lot of the top teams other than Dayton. With a win like that against [Rhode Island], a possible NCAA team, I think that says a lot, Harris said following Saturdays win.
A common theme of many of UMass losses this season has been falling behind early against opponents, mounting a comeback and then not having enough left in the tank to finish the comeback.
Saturdays win over Rhode Island was a step in the right direction for UMass according to Kellogg and may not have come at a better time. For one of the first times this season, the Minutemen kept the game within striking distance, allowing them to have the energy to finish out the game.
In addition, with a young core of players who are still learning what it takes to compete at the college level, the win over the Rams gives them that experience and confidence needed to make a run in a conference tournament.
We can do a lot more winning if we stay positive and stay on this path, Harris said.
But even more important to making a run in the A-10 Tournament than strong play from the younger Minutemen, is the play of Harris. The senior scored a game-high 28 points in the victory over URI and has averaged 23.7 points per game over the final 11 games of the season to help lift UMass into the A-10 Tournament.

HARLOTTE, N.C. - University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg was still feeling energized from his team's upset of Rhode Island as he got set to head to Charlotte for tonight's game at 7 in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Rhode Island dominated the Minutemen 93-85 in their first meeting on Feb. 6, but UMass (11-19, 5-11 A-10) improved considerably to win 69-67 on Saturday.
Kellogg hopes for a similar upgrade against the 49ers (19-11, 9-7 A-10) who beat the Minutemen 72-58 at the Mullins Center on Jan. 30.
"I'm hoping we can have similar progress from the last time we played Charlotte to this time," Kellogg said. "Not even wins and losses, how we played and what we're capable of doing.
"They're a good team that came in and handled us at the Mullins Center," he added. "They're obviously a good ball club, but I think we were our own worst enemy at times in that game. There's some things we have to do better to stay in the game against a team that still has hope for an at-large bid.
"I feel like we're better than we were then. I feel like guys' roles are better defined," Kellogg continued. "I hope we're taking a little better care of the basketball."
Charlotte still has at-large hopes for the NCAA Tournament, but they are slimmer now than three weeks ago. The 49ers have lost six of their last seven games and would likely need a deep run in the A-10 Tournament to be considered.
Charlotte ended the NCAA Tournament hopes for UMass in 2008 when the sixth-seeded 49ers upset the No. 3 Minutemen 69-65 in the A-10 Tournament in Atlantic City.
Kellogg has shortened his rotation in recent games. Hashim "Big City" Bailey and Matt Hill did not play at all against Rhode Island and will likely have their minutes dictated by foul trouble or matchup, while Anthony Gurley's recent struggles have cost him time.
Freshman Sampson Carter, who played 25 minutes combined in three straight games in mid-February, has averaged over 22 minutes in the last four games. He has rewarded Kellogg's confidence with increased production, especially on the glass, by grabbing 6.5 rebounds per game in that stretch.
"He's done a great job. He showed some early signs, but nothing real consistent. But he's been one of our most consistent guys over the last four or five games," Kellogg said. "He's done some really good things. He stopped worrying about scoring the ball and done the things the team needs him to do.
"It's been a good run for him," he added. "Hopefully that's going to springboard him to a very good Atlantic 10 Tournament and a great career here. His confidence has gone way up. He's in a good frame of mind to be in."
A-10 TOURNAMENT WOES - UMass is trying to snap an eight-game losing streak in the conference tournament.
Since the last Minuteman A-10 Tourney victory - 73-62 over George Washington in the first round on March 6, 2002 - every other team in the conference has won at least once.
UMass has lost conference tournament games in Philadelphia, Amherst, Dayton, Cincinnati and Atlantic City, and will try to avoid adding Charlotte to the list tonight.

HARLOTTE, N.C. - UMass won an Atlantic 10 Tournament game for the first time since 2002 with a 59-56 triumph over Charlotte on Tuesday night at Halton Arena. The 11th-seeded Minutemen (12-19) were led by a game-high 24 points from senior Ricky Harris to top the 6th-seeded 49ers in a back and forth game that featured nine lead changes and 10 ties. UMass advances to Atlantic City and A-10 Quarterfinals to face No. 3 seed Richmond on Friday night at 9 p.m.
On a night when the shots were not falling, the Minutemen used a strong defensive effort, holding the 49ers to 35 percent shooting in the second half and 37 percent for the game. UMass shot 32 percent from the field.
With UMass leading by one, Charlotte looked to be scoring for the first time in about five minutes as Derrio Green had a breakaway but his shot was blocked by Javorn Farrell into the backboard support for a jump ball and UMass was awarded possession with 1:26 remaining. That was followed by Terrell Vinson dropping in a baby jumper with 50 seconds left for a 54-51 UMass edge. After Charlotte called timeout, the 49ers went out on to the court with six players and were called for a technical foul, Harris made both free throws and UMass went up 56-51.
A 3-pointer by Gokhan Sirin, his first points of the game, pulled Charlotte within two with 46 seconds left, but Harris hit two free throws with 20 seconds left to put UMass up four, 58-54. After a Phil Jones putback with 12 seconds left, Vinson made one of two free throws with six seconds left to make it 59-56.
UMass then fouled with four seconds left to put DiJuan Harris at the line for 1-and-1. Harris missed and the clock ran out, giving UMass the 59-56 victory.
Charlotte was led by An'Juan Wilderness' 11 points, while Jones added 10. Derrio Green, who scored 34 against UMass in their regular season meeting, was held to just two points on 1-for-7 shooting.
Charlotte used a 10-2 run to take a 47-44 lead with 12:21 left in the second as Ian Andersen canned a 3-pointer for the lead. The 49ers made the run with four subs in the game (Phil Jones, Gokhan Sirin, Charles Dewhurst and Andersen) as coach Bobby Lutz benched starters Derrio Green, Wilderness, Chris Braswell and Spears for a long period of time.
UMass took a five-point lead on back-to-back alley-oops dunks by Sean Carter with 15:15 left in the second half to make it 42-37.
Thanks to a 16-point first half by Harris, UMass led 31-29 at intermission.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Gary Correia and Anthony Gurley gave UMass a 20-13 lead with 10:43 left in the first half. Harris scored UMass' first 10 points of the game, putting the Minutemen up 10-9, 6:01 into the action.

For the first time in eight seasons, the Massachusetts mens basketball team defeated an opponent in the Atlantic 10 tournament, as the Minutemen (12-19, 5-11 A-10) upset Charlotte on Tuesday night, 59-56, at Halton Arena.
Eleventh-seeded UMass will now head to Atlantic City to take on No. 3 Richmond on Friday night at 9 p.m.
It was a hard fought game by our players, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. Its about the team and players, its about Ricky [Harris] playing the way he has down the stretch.
Harris led all scorers with 24 points, including hitting his first four shots of the game, going 5-of-13 from the field and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line.
Its a great feeling right now, Harris said. Its a great win in a hostile environment against a great team that is well coached, and the win on the road is big for us. Now, we have to take it to Atlantic City, and hopefully carry it over.
While Harris led the game in scoring, the Minutemen won on the defensive side of the floor, as they caused the sixth-seeded 49ers (19-12, 9-7 A-10) into shooting 35 percent in the second half and 37 percent for the game, while causing five turnovers.
Thats the thing Ive been preaching all year, and I didnt think we played well on the offensive end, but we grinded it out, Kellogg said of his teams defensive performance. Its been a long time coming, but we toughed it out for a win and made some plays down the stretch.
UMass shot 32 percent from the field and went 7-of-32 from 3-point range, but converted from the free-throw line with 18-of-22 shots.
With the loss, the 49ers will be hard pressed to make the NCAA tournament, losing seven of their last eight games.
The Minutemen were up one when freshman Javorn Farrell blocked a shot from Derrio Green against the backboard, causing a jump ball in the possession of UMass with just under a minute and a half left in regulation.
Freshman forward Terrell Vinson then hit a jumper to give the Minutemen a 54-51 lead with 50 seconds left.
The 49ers called a timeout and went on to the court with six players, resulting in a technical foul, with Harris making both free throws to put the Minutemen up five.
A quick 3 by Gokhan Sirin cut the 49er deficit to two with 46 seconds to play, but Harris again hit two more free throws to put UMass up 58-54.
After a quick Charlotte basket, Vinson hit one of two free throws, and Hashim Bailey grabbed the rebound to seal the victory after a one-and-one miss from DiJuan Harris.
Along with Harris, Sean Carter added seven points and seven rebounds, while Terrell Vinson and Bailey both added six points in the victory.
Freshman Freddie Riley added a 3-pointer, while Farrell added five points and four assists.
Its unbelievable, and its a pleasure to watch them, Harris said of his young teammates. I wish I had another year, because next year they will be a good team with well-rounded individuals.
The 49ers were led by AnJuan Wilderness (11 pts) and Ian Andersen (10 pts), while Shamari Spears and Phil Jones each had eight.
UMass fell to the 49ers 72-58 back on Jan. 30, and lost to the Spiders 70-63 in an overtime contest on Jan. 13.
In 2008, the third-seeded Minutemen fell to the sixth-seeded 49ers, 69-65, in the the A-10 quarterfinals, after earning a first round bye.
We have good kids, and when things arent going well, they work hard and persevere, they have tremendous attitudes and have stayed up beat, Kellogg said.
That optimism has brought UMass back to Atlantic City for the second time this season, not for the Legends Classic it played earlier this year, but a shot at the A-10 title.

HARLOTTE, N.C. - The University of Massachusetts snapped its Atlantic 10 Tournament losing streak and popped what was left of Charlotte's NCAA bubble hopes all in one shot Tuesday night.
Despite making just two of its last 19 shots, the No. 11-seeded Minutemen upset No. 6 Charlotte 59-56 in the first round of the tournament.
"That was a great college basketball game," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "Both teams competed and played really hard. Sometimes luck is better than skill. For us to came away with a victory is a testament to my team."
UMass (12-19), which had lost eight straight A-10 postseason games, will try to win its second in a row against No. 3 Richmond at 9 p.m. Friday in Atlantic City.
The 49ers (19-12), who lost seven of their last eight games, will hope for a National Invitation Tournament bid.
After UMass took a 54-51 lead on a Terrell Vinson jumper in the lane with 56 seconds left, Charlotte called time-out. But out of the break, the 49ers inadvertently put six players on the floor and as soon as they passed the ball inbounds they were called for a technical foul.
"You would think a guy with three undergraduate degrees and two graduate degrees could count to five," Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz said. "That was a huge play and ultimately it comes to me."
Kellogg said he was surprised.
"Strange things happen in college basketball," Kellogg said. "Maybe fate was on our side tonight."
Ricky Harris made both free throws to put the Minutemen up 56-51 and in control.
Gokhan Sirin hit a 3-pointer at the other end for the 49ers, but Harris answered with two more free throws with 20 seconds left to give UMass a 58-54 lead.
Sirin missed a three at the other end, but Phil Jones put back the rebound with 12 seconds left to cut the deficit to 58-56.
The Minutemen burned six seconds before Charlotte fouled Vinson. He made one of two free throws and UMass called time-out.
With only seven team fouls, Kellogg instructed his players to foul Dijuan Harris when he crossed half court to prevent a game-tying 3-pointer.
Gary Correia fouled with four seconds left and Dijuan Harris missed the front end of the one-and-one. Hashim "Big City" Bailey grabbed the rebound as the clock ran out and the Minutemen celebrated.
"We had a total team effort. We didn't shoot well or make all the plays," Kellogg said. "But we made the key plays we needed to make."
Ricky Harris led UMass with 24 points, while Sean Carter added seven points and seven rebounds.
An'Juan Wilderness led Charlotte with 11 points, all in the first half.
Led by a hot-shooting Ricky Harris, the Minutemen did not fall into their usual early hole. He scored 16 points before intermission to help UMass take a 31-29 lead at the break despite no points from Vinson or Freddie Riley.

HARLOTTE, N.C. - After the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team lost to Michigan State in the Legends Classic at Boardwalk Hall in November, coach Derek Kellogg said he hoped his team would play well enough to earn a trip back to Atlantic City in March.
The Minutemen needed back-to-back wins over Rhode Island and Charlotte - teams that had been on the NCAA Tournament bubble - but Kellogg's November wish is coming true.
The 11th-seeded Minutemen were the only road team to advance in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Tuesday with their 59-56 win. In the other first-round games, Dayton defeated George Washington 70-60, Rhode Island beat Saint Joseph's 87-76 and St. Bonaventure won over Duquesne 83-71.
UMass will face No. 3 Richmond at 9 p.m. Friday in Atlantic City. The quarterfinals will start with No. 8 St. Bonaventure playing No. 1 Temple at noon, followed by No. 5 Rhode Island against No. 4 Saint Louis at 2:30 p.m. No. 7 Dayton will take on No. 2 Xavier at 6:30 p.m.
The winners of the UMass-Richmond and Dayton-Xavier games will play at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
"I thought it was another step forward for a young team," Kellogg said of Tuesday's win. "Ricky Harris is really leading us and playing like a senior should play in tournament play. He's been a great ambassador for the program."
Harris said feels like the momentum is building for UMass.
"Guys are playing together and playing hard. Everyone is playing their roles," he said. "We're starting to gel at a crucial point in the season."
BACK TO 2007-08 - Kellogg said he wasn't thinking about the 2007-08 NCAA Championship game when he elected to foul Dijuan Harris with four seconds left and UMass leading by three points Tuesday.
Kellogg was an assistant coach on the Memphis staff that didn't foul with a three-point lead against Kansas in the championship game. Mario Chalmers hit a game-tying 3-pointer and Memphis lost that game in overtime.
"With six seconds on the clock my philosophy is we're going to foul and not give them a chance to shoot the 3," Kellogg said. "Fortunately for us, it worked. I think the percentages are best when you do foul in that situation."
The Minutemen weren't thinking of that season either. But the win at least partially avenges Charlotte's 69-65 upset of UMass in the Atlantic 10 Tournament quarterfinal, ending any hope the Minutemen had of an NCAA at-large bid that year.
CONTAINING GREEN - When the 49ers beat the Minutemen 72-58 on Jan. 30, junior guard Derrio Green led Charlotte with 34 points, including eight 3-pointers. On Tuesday Green had just two points and was 1-for-7 from the field.
UMass shut down Charlotte leading scorer Shamari Spears in both games. He had eight points Tuesday after getting four in January.
MISCELLANEOUS - With Charlotte on spring break, the 49ers drew a season-low 1,941 fans.
The 24 points scored by Ricky Harris give him 1,941 in his career.

f there was one play signifying the Charlotte 49ers' late-season collapse it was this.
Trailing by three with a chance to tie and 55 seconds left in the game, the 49ers never got a shot off. Why? The 49ers were assessed a technical foul for having six men on the court.
That was just one of many things that did not go right in Charlotte's 59-56 loss to Massachusetts Tuesday night in the first round of the Atlantic 10 tournament at Halton Arena.
The 49ers, the tournament's third seed, drop to 19-12, having lost seven of their last eight games. Their only chance remaining at further play this season now lies in the hands of the National Invitational Tournament officials.
UMass (12-19), the 11th-seed, advances to the tournament quarterfinals Friday in Atlantic City, N.J., where the Minutemen will face third seed Richmond (24-7) at 9 p.m. Friday at Boardwalk Hall.
"You would think a guy with three undergraduate degrees and two graduate degrees could count to five," Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz said of the technical foul for too many players. "That was a huge play and ultimately it comes to me."
Ricky Harris made both free throws to give UMass a 56-51 lead with 55 seconds left but Charlotte's Gokhan Sirin made a 3-pointer to cut the Minutemen's lead to two with 39 seconds to go.
UMass made 3-of-4 free throws to close the game in the final 21 seconds.
Charlotte again struggled from the 3-point line as guards DiJuan Harris, Derrio Green and Ian Andersen were a combined 2-of-16 from long-range.
"These last few weeks have been really tough. I've tried every coach technique, strategy, motivational technique that I know and I just haven't been able to get us turned around," Lutz said.
"We were missing something. We lost our confidence and that's something hard to get back. It's my job to get that accomplished and I wasn't able to."
At one point this season the 49ers were 18-5 and 8-1 in league play and appeared headed to a NCAA tournament appearance - a big turnaround coming off an 11-20 season.
Lutz said he hopes the 49ers' late-season losses don't overshadow the progress made this season.
"We had a good year but a bad finish. We won 19 games and did a lot of terrific things," he said. "The finish is what people remember and I understand that and hate that for our team.
"In some ways they deserve better. I'm still proud of them and proud of our seniors."
Junior An'Juan Wilderness led the 49ers in scoring with 11 points, nine of which came in the first half.
"We started off good and towards the end of the season we just lost it," Wilderness said. "I thought we got it back in the Saint Joseph's win (a 95-58 49ers victory) but we couldn't hold on to it.
"It's really hard to explain right now."
