MHERST - A win in November against a Division II team doesn't generally mean much.
But University of Massachusetts big man Sean Carter said the Minutemen (0-2) badly need a win in Saturday's game against Arkansas-Fort Smith.
"We have to win this game. There's no question about it," Carter said. "We need to win this game and get our momentum going.
"We took two tough losses. We could have helped ourselves by executing better," he added. "We made a few changes defensively that's going to help us more. I think we're going to have it together for Saturday's game."
Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg agreed.
"A win or to play really, really well would be good for everybody," he said. "We're putting in work and everybody is competing hard every day, "It's a process. But you do want to show some signs that you're improving."
Kellogg said he is trying to be hard on his players to push them to improve, but does not want to demoralize them.
"When you're trying to build a program and you're losing games, you want to be careful to keep the team in a certain frame of mind," he said. "You want to push them, but you can't beat them down and bury them. You have to find that fine line."
The game is part of the Legends Classic, but like Wednesday's 74-61 loss to Cornell the result will not affect UMass advancing to the tournament semifinals Friday in Atlantic City. The Minutemen will play Rutgers at 5:30 p.m.
Arkansas-Fort Smith is technically a transitional Division II program. A year ago, the Lions were still a junior college, a level at which they were a power. They were ranked No. 2 in the national junior college rankings and won the NJCAA national championship in 2006.
Their roster features five transfers from other junior colleges, one Division I transfer and seven freshman.
Arkansas-Fort Smith is in the Legends Classic because the Gazelle Group could not get enough Division I teams to fill out the field.
The Lions faced two Division I teams in exhibition games, losing to Saint Louis 79-51, and Nebraska 86-66. But they won their Division II debut, cruising past the University of the Ozarks 87-65 on Tuesday.
"They're a good team. For where they are as a program, they've done a nice job," Kellogg said. "They competed really well with Nebraska and Saint Louis.
"It should be a good challenge for us," he added "We just need to play our game. It wasn't like we blew (Division II exhibition opponent) Dowling out. When Division II teams come in they play like it's their Super Bowl, their national championship."
NOTES: This is the second straight season that UMass has played a Division II team from Arkansas early. The Minutemen opened last season with a 90-71 win over Arkansas-Monticello in the 2K Sports Classic, another Gazelle Group event.
UMass is 4-0 all time against schools from "The Natural State."
The Minutemen beat Arkansas to open the 1994-95 season and again in the Sweet Sixteen of the 1996 NCAA Tournament. UMass also beat Arkansas-Little Rock 66-60 to open the 2001-02 season.
Ricky Harris needs six points to pass Edwin Green (1,393) who is No. 11 on the Minutemen's career scoring list. And 40 points will get Harris into the all-time top 10 at UMass.

MHERST, Mass. - Behind a quintet of double-digit scorers, led by Anthony Gurley's 21 points, the UMass men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season, cruising 94-68 over Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center. Ricky Harris netted 18 points, while Freddie Riley (17), Terrell Vinson (14), and Sean Carter (13) gave the Minutemen their first game with five in double-figures in the Derek Kellogg era. UMass improved to 1-2 on the season, while Arkansas-Fort Smith drops to 1-1.
With his 18 points, Harris moved up to 11th on the UMass career scoring list with 1,406 points. UMass' assist to turnover ratio was 24-16, with David Gibbs leading the way with six helpers. The Minutemen also controlled the glass, pulling down 42 boards, including 14 offensive rebounds.
The Minutemen jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, but the Lions battled back as the UMass shooters looked for their touch, taking a 15-11 lead with 11:32 left in the half.
UAFS led by one with eight and a half minutes remaining in the first half when UMass went on a 13-2 run over 2:05 to take a 30-20 lead with 6:13 left. After the Lions went on a small 6-1 run, the Minutemen, led by seven-straight points from Gurley, closed the half on a 12-2 run over the final 2:58 to take a commanding 43-28 lead into the locker room.
Gurley finished the first half with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while Harris netted 10, including the last two buckets of the half. 34 of UMass' 43 points in the half came in the paint, while 20 points came off the bench.
The UMass lead was trimmed to 12 with 16 minutes left in the game, but that was as close as the Lions would get. The Minutemen then scored nine-straight points, six of which came from Riley, as the freshmen guard caught fire and UMass extended its lead to 21 with 13:40 to go. He scored 11 points in a span of 3:09 midway through the second half.
The Minutemen continued to roll down the stretch, building the lead to its highest on the last points of the night when senior Lex Mongo found Sampson Carter under the hoop for a 3-point play with 26 seconds left, making it a 94-68 game.
The Minutemen return to action on Tuesday when they host St. Francis (N.Y.) at the Mullins Center for a 7 p.m. tip.
UMass picked up its first win of the season with a 94-68 victory over Arkansas-Fort Smith.
UMass is now 5-0 all-time against teams from the Natural State: 2-0 vs. Arkansas, 1-0 vs. Arkansas Little Rock, 1-0 vs. Arkansas Monticello and 1-0 vs. Arkansas Fort Smith.
Ricky Harris moved to 11th in career scoring with 18 points. He now has 1,406 as he moved past Edwin Green (1,393).
Harris also moved to fourth in career 3-point goals attempts with eight. He now has 597 to surpass Rafer Giles (592).
Harris scored in double-figures for the 67th time in 101 career games. He has scored 10 or more in 64 of his last 69 games.
UMass had five players score in double-figures for the first time in two seasons and in the Derek Kellogg era. The last time came vs. La Salle (3/5/08).
Anthony Gurley scored in double-figures for the third time in as many games this season and 29th time in his career with 21.
It was Gurley's fourth career-game with 20-plus points and third at UMass.
Gurley also posted a career-high in assists with five.
David Gibbs had a career-high six assists. His previous best was three, set several times last season.
Freddie Riley scored in double-figures for the second time this season with 17. He had 12 in the opener at UCF.
Sean Carter played most of the game in jersey No. 42 after his normal No. 23 had blood on it. He also scored in double-figures for the first time in his UMass career with 13. It was his third-career game with more than 10, two coming at Oregon State.
Terrell Vinson scored in double-figures for the second game in a row with 14, also his second-career game with 10 or more.
Lex Mongo made his seventh-career appearance in a game, playing the final two minutes.
nthony Gurleys 15-point first half pushed the Massachusetts mens basketball team out to a 15-point lead at halftime, and it never lost the lead during its 94-68 rout over Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Despite 40 second-half points to go along with hot shooting (54.5 percent), the Lions struggled to cool down the Minutemen, who finished the game shooting 54.5 percent. Gurley finished the night with a game-high 21 points.
I thought he gave us a great boost when we were a little bit stagnant in the first half, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said of Gurleys performance.
One of the areas where the Minutemen were most effective was in the paint, where they finished with 54 points. Center Sean Carter (13 points, eight rebounds) shot 5-for-7 from the field to go with three free throws.
He did some good stuff, Kellogg said. When youre playing Division II teams like that, you need your big guy to be dominant and really change the complexion of the game and I thought he did that.
Without redshirt junior Hashim Bailey (groin), the Minutemen had to find other big men to relieve Carter inside. On the rebounding end, redshirt sophomore Matt Hill recorded four rebounds in nine minutes, which is the most hes played since last years season opener against Arkansas-Monticello where he played eight minutes and hit a 3-pointer.
Kellogg said he saw many positives in Hills game, but the fact that he has limited action in games might have been the reason for his 0-for-2 shooting night. Both shots came on follow-ups.
He just didnt quite finish, and Im not sure if thats rust or not playing or being injured last year, Kellogg said. He just didnt put those last couple put-backs right in the basket.
However, forward Terrell Vinson (14 points, 6-for-8 shooting) succeeded in impressing Kellogg with his best scoring night of the season. The freshman wasnt the only Minuteman to have a career night.
The Maroon and White had a variety of contributions, with five players finishing in double-figures for scoring.
All of those players except Harris finished with season-highs. Riley took nine 3-pointers for the third time this season and scored 12 of his 17 points from beyond the arc.
Now that he feels more comfortable scoring, he believes he needs to become a better defender before he becomes the type of player that Kellogg expects.
I can score, but I feel like my defense is the most valuable thing that I can bring to the team if its a lot better, Riley said of what he can do to improve.
Kellogg said that, despite winning the game by such a big margin, he found times where the defense still had its lapses. Until Gurley went on a surge late in the first half, Arkansas-Fort Smith kept the game close, even with bad shooting.
The game started as a back-and-forth affair early on with four different lead changes. The Lions biggest lead of the game was four points, but UMass responded without much of a struggle and took the lead for good with nine minutes, 10 seconds left in the half after forward Vinson took a fast-break to the basket and put the Minutemen up, 17-16.
A combination of poor first-half shooting (33 percent) and Gurleys surge gave the Minutemen a commanding lead at the half.
The Lions came out of the locker room with a run of their own and cut the deficit to 12 points, but UMass later went on a 9-0 run and kept the game out of reach.
The Minutemen conclude their home schedule in the Legends Classic on Tuesday against St. Francis before heading to Atlantic City, N.J., to face Rutgers and either Michigan State or Florida.

n order for any basketball team to be successful, it must have a bench it can rely on to generate offense when the starting five is not in the game, or struggling to create opportunities.
The Massachusetts basketball team displayed how it can effectively score through its depth, contributing 44 points in a 94-68 victory over Arkansas Fort-Smith Saturday night.
Redshirt junior Anthony Gurley played 24 minutes in his sixth-man role, scoring a game-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and added five assists.
I thought he gave us a great boost off the bench when we were a little stagnant in the first half, Kellogg said. Ricky [Harris] was making some decent plays but when hes not in the game or scoring, who else do you go to, and Anthony did that in the context of the offense.
Gurley was patient, didnt force shots, and was able to score in transition, as the Minutemen had 17 points in transition and 19 off of turnovers.
I was just going with the flow and just playing the game and just trying to knock down open shots, and thankfully, the ball just happened to go in tonight, Gurley said.
Gurley was not the only spark off the pine, with freshman guard Freddie Riley adding 17 points in 19 minutes, including going 4-of-9 from 3-point range. While Gurley was more complacent in scoring off the bench, Kellogg, along with Riley, felt that some of the freshmans shots were forced, and that he wants to improve on his shot selection and his defense.
A couple of shots I made were bad shots, they just happened to go in, but Im a lot more confident now, Riley said.
Riley had 12 points against Central Florida in his collegiate debut, and had eight against Cornell. Even with the questionable shooting, Kellogg feels that Riley will continue to provide scoring opportunities off the bench for UMass.
He took a couple of shots that I shook my head at, but when they went in, I said great shot, Freddie, Kellogg said. He gave you a little of what he is going to do here, maybe not this year, but definitely in the future.
Along with Riley and Gurley, freshman Javorn Farrell, junior guard Gary Correia, and redshirt sophomore forwards Trey Lang and Matt Hill provided depth when freshman forwards Terrell Vinson and Sampson Carter needed a break. Farrell had four rebounds and had two points and two assists in 14 minutes, while Correia had three points and four assists in 18 minutes for starting point guard David Gibbs. While Lang played just two minutes off the bench, Hill snagged four rebounds and had a block shot in nine minutes of play.
Matt did some good things, he rebounded the ball but he just didnt finish, Kellogg said. I dont know if thats rust or not playing or being injured all last year, he just didnt put those last couple put-backs back in the basket, Kellogg said.
Hill tore his Achilles in a loss to Memphis after playing 10 minutes, and saw action off the bench before his season-ending injury.
Center Hashim Bailey did not play against the Lions because of a pulled groin. Bailey, though, will also look to give center Sean Carter a rest at the center position later on in the season. The redshirt junior transfer from Memphis played in 14 minutes against the Big Red, securing three rebounds and had a blocked shot and a steal against the Golden Knights. While all of the Minutemens depth is beneficial, both Riley and Gurley know that their role as sixth and seventh man respectively will help generate scoring opportunities and could be the difference between winning and losing games.
I think thats both mine and Freddys role is, is to come in and provide some offensive lift off the bench, provide leadership, and make sure that when we come in the game, the score doesnt change, it goes up in our favor, Gurley said.

MHERST - As senior Ricky Harris jogged over to high-five the University of Massachusetts student fans under the southwest basket at the Mullins Center Saturday night, he smiled and pumped his fist.
"Finally!" he shouted.
The UMass men's basketball team got its first win of the season and an infusion of confidence as Arkansas-Fort Smith, a transitional Division II team, offered little resistance. The Minutemen outscored them 94-68.
"I wouldn't say we played a perfect game or a great game, but it does feel good to get a W," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "We obviously have a long way to go, but I do see some signs that this team could do some good things."
The Minutemen (1-2) return to action against St. Francis (N.Y.) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Mullins Center.
The Lions (1-1) stayed with UMass early. They led 15-11 and still were ahead by one with 8 minutes, 33 seconds left in the first half.
But Anthony Gurley's second basket of the game gave the Minutemen a 19-18 lead and sparked a 13-2 run that put UMass in control.
It was the start of a hot first half for the junior from Newton, who had 21 points and a career-high five assists. His 16 first-half points seemed to put the Minutemen over the top.
"I was just going with the flow and trying to knock down open shots," Gurley said. "Thankfully the ball just happened to go in tonight."
This was the type of performance envisioned by Kellogg when he decided to make Gurley, the team's second leading returning scorer, a sixth man this season.
"He gave us a great boost when we were a little bit stagnant in the first half," Kellogg said. "He did it within the context of the offense. He didn't force a lot of stuff. He got some good things in transition."
Gurley said all the bench players are just trying to provide a lift.
"We have to make sure when we go in the game that the score goes up in our favor and not down," Gurley said. "I'm just trying to be a leader for the young guys as well."
Sean Carter suffered a cut to his chin in the first half and bled on his No. 23 jersey. He finished the game wearing No. 42. The new digits seemed to bring him good luck. He had season highs in points (13) and rebounds (eight).
"I think Sean did some nice things tonight," Kellogg said. "Hopefully, he continues to get better."
Nine Minutemen scored and five of them reached double figures. Harris added 18, while freshman Freddie Riley (17) and Terrell Vinson (14) each had their career highs.
Aaron McHenry led Arkansas Fort-Smith with 18 points.
"A game like this is a good confidence booster," Gurley said. "... We got the win, but we obviously have a lot to work on still. We have to keep making progress every day."

MHERST - When a couple of Freddie Riley's 13 shots went up Saturday night, University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg cringed.
"I kind of shook my head, but when they went in I said 'Great shot Freddie,'" Kellogg said, laughing. "But he gave a little taste of what he's going to do here in the future."
The freshman from Florida made six of those 13 shots, including four-of-nine 3-point attempts, and he scored 17 points in 19 minutes off the bench as the Minutemen defeated Arkansas Fort-Smith 94-68.
"A couple shots I made were bad shots but they just happened to go in," Riley said. "I'm a lot more confident now than I was in our exhibition game and our first regular-season games."
Riley also acknowledged he has plenty to improve. "My shot selection and my defense most of all," he said. "I can score, but my defense is the most valuable thing I can bring to the team if it's a lot better. We already have scorers. It's improving a lot, rapidly."
MILESTONES - The 18 points scored by Ricky Harris gave him 1,406 for his career, passing Edwin Green (1,393) to move into 11th place on the school's all-time scoring list. Next up is No. 10 Horace Neysmith (1,428).
BAILEY HURT - Minuteman junior big man Hashim "Big City" Bailey did not play Saturday after suffering a pulled groin in practice on Friday. His status for Tuesday's game at the Mullins center against St. Francis (N.Y.) is uncertain.
LANG AND HILL - Bailey's absence opened the door for more playing time by reserve big men Trey Lang and Matt Hill.
Lang was the first big man off the bench. He played two minutes and scored his first collegiate point on a free throw. Lang has played nine minutes this season, matching the total for all of his freshman year in 2007-08.
Hill had four rebounds, tying his career total.
"Matt did some pretty good things," Kellogg said. "... Matt rebounded the ball, but he didn't quite finish and put the ball back in the basket."
MISCELLANEOUS - The game concluded the Amherst regional of the Legends Classic. Despite UMass splitting two games in the regional, the Minutemen resume play in the Legends Classic against Rutgers at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Atlantic City, N.J.
Attendance at Saturday's game was 2,866.
Kellogg kept the option open to redshirt freshman Raphiael Putney by not playing him in Saturday's blowout victory. Barring an injury, any appearance by Putney in a game would eliminate the redshirt possibility.
David Gibbs had a career-high six assists. He has 12 assists and one turnover this season.
Lex Mongo had his first career assist.
For the second straight season UMass got its first win against a University of Arkansas branch campus. Last year the Minutemen defeated Arkansas-Monticello 90-71 in the 2K Sports Classic.
For the fourth time since 1994, the Minutemen got their first win of the season over a school from the Arkansas system.
UMass is now 5-0 all-time against teams from Arkansas.
