aturdays loss to No. 9 Michigan State could have two very different effects on the Massachusetts mens basketball team, according to coach Derek Kellogg.
Either the Minutemen (2-4) will be inspired by seeing what a Final Four contender does to win games, or they will look at the 106-68 score and lose the momentum from the two straight wins they had before Thanksgiving.
Kellogg is hoping its not the latter.
While the score is indicative of how the game went, I hope it didnt damage our psyche as a team, Kellogg said.
UMass next opponent isnt at the same level as the Spartans, or even Rutgers, but Kellogg believes that Quinnipiac is still a team that will provide a challenge at the Mullins Center tonight.
The Bobcats (3-2) are coming off a three-point loss to Navy, but are still one of the better teams in the Northeast Conference. Kellogg expects Quinnipiac to feel pretty confident about its chances at competing with the Minutemen, despite the recent loss.
They played a good schedule for their team and their program and Im just hoping that we can get better as a team and play hard defense and make it rough on them, he said.
The Bobcats have a mostly veteran roster with four freshmen on their 15-player roster. At the helm is shooting guard James Feldeine (17.2 points per game). The senior is not only the top scorer on his team, but is also a strong rebounding force.
Feldeine is second on the team in rebounds per game with six despite being a 6-foot-4 guard.
Quinnipiac also has a strong inside player in junior Justin Rutty. He averages 15.2 points per game and leads the team in rebounds (8.4). However, he and the rest of the Bobcats are going to have a hard time with the Minutemen, who are much bigger inside.
Rutty, who stands at 6-foot-7, is the tallest active player Quinnipiac has. Forward Eric Coggins (6-9) is the teams biggest player, but he only played five minutes this season and probably wont even see playing time tonight.
The Bobcats lack of size should bode well for UMass, who isnt all that big, but features Hashim Bailey and Sean Carter up front.
Neither player will be dominant inside scorers; however, they both have the ability to rebound.
Carter (6.7 rpg) leads the Minutemen in rebounding with his athleticism and long body. Carter started every game at center except for the last one against MSU, where he played power forward while Bailey started in the middle.
The Memphis transfer comes off arguably the best game of his career. He blocked a shot and grabbed seven rebounds in 25 minutes against the Spartans.
UMass size advantage is even greater thanks to the new freshmen. Sampson Carter and Terrell Vinson started every game of the season until Thanksgiving Break. After the St. Francis win, Kellogg felt encouraged with both of their progress.
Sampson Carter and Vinson finished with 13 points against the Terriers and shot better than 50 percent from the field.
I think these last few games were good stepping stones for [the freshmen], Harris said following the Nov. 24 win. They got their confidence up. You could see them out on the floor playing with confidence.
It was a different story for them when the Minutemen played in Atlantic City. Both struggled on the offensive end and grabbing rebounds, but it was against competition that Kellogg didnt feel that his team was ready for.
He hopes that wont necessarily be the case against the Bobcats.

fter two tough losses this past weekend in the Legends Classic, the Massachusetts mens basketball team is feeling the effects of playing back-to-back contests on the road to strong teams early in the season.
It was a long weekend, and I thought now you are basically playing two BCS teams, one that is rated in the top five in the country and another one that is much improved in the Big East, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. I thought they were both obviously pretty good challenges for us.
Junior guard Gary Correia, redshirt junior center Hashim Bailey and freshman forward Javorn Farrell are suffering from minor injuries, that might affect how the Minutemen game plan for Quinnipiac tonight. Farrell sat out Mondays practice after playing 13 minutes and scoring three points against the Spartans.
The freshman played in all six games, averaging four points per game and 2.7 rebounds per game, while being a constant on the defensive side of the ball.
Playing so many games in such a short period of time with such young guys, they tend to get injury-prone a little bit, Kellogg said.
Bailey sat out the game against Arkansas-Fort Smith with a groin pull, but logged the most minutes of his career (25) against the Spartans on Saturday, while securing seven rebounds.
UMass gave up 100 points Saturday for the first time since 2007, when the Minutemen had a 107-100 win at Syracuse.
With some of his players being a little banged up, Kellogg wants to focus on making key stops and rebounding against a Bobcats team that is coming off a buzzer-beater defeat against Navy Monday night, and playing through the pain.
I want to see us get a little bit tougher and a bit better defensively, is the actual goal right now, Kellogg said.
Harris to play more point
Senior guard Ricky Harris (15 points) made his career debut bringing the ball up against the Spartans. However, Kellogg liked what he saw from the Minutemens leading scorer, who finished 5-for-11 shooting, including 2-for-5 from 3-point range in 24 minutes.
Im hoping he can play some point and not have it affect his scoring, because now he has the ball in his hands and in that juncture, you want him to score, Kellogg said. But you also want him to score the basketball and make the right plays, and its a work in progress.
This could impact sophomore guard David Gibbs and Correia, who both have experience bringing the ball up. Gibbs started the first five games at point, averaging 2.7 points per game in 22.7 minutes, while Correia has helped off the bench.
Against the Spartans, Kellogg wanted to start his most mature and physical players, so he started Bailey, Sean Carter and Anthony Gurley, who has scored in double-figures in all six games this season.
Against Michigan State, I was trying to play the most mature, oldest team possible to compete with their size and physicality, and it worked for about five minutes, Kellogg said.
Harris currently averages 17.7 points per game, and is now 10th all-time in career scoring with 1,453 points.

MHERST - Senior guard Ricky Harris was thinking about how to help his men's basketball teammates on and off the court as he prepared for the University of Massachusetts game at 7 tonight against Quinnipiac at the Mullins Center.
The Minutemen's only senior will now be at least a part-time point guard, adding to his leadership responsibilities. He was focused on learning how to get his teammates the ball in places they could be successful and what he could do to make sure the team had put Saturday's 38-point loss to Michigan State behind them.
"It's hard getting people the ball in the right place to get shots, but I think I'll get the hang of it pretty fast," he said. "I've got to find Anthony (Gurley) who likes to score. I have to find Sean (Carter) on lobs and Terrell Vinson who likes to score. It's not just me out there trying to score.
"I was hesitant with moves that I would normally make if I was off the ball at the point position because you have to get other guys involved," Harris continued. "I was thinking a little bit. But as I started to play, I started to get a feel a little bit."
Harris said he encouraged his teammates to put Saturday's loss behind them.
"I don't want them to start getting down on themselves. We're only six games into the year and we played one of the best teams in the country in Michigan State," he said. "I want them to put that behind them. It was a good test. I hope we learned from it."
Coach Derek Kellogg said the Minutemen's confidence also was on his mind.
"If you go through what we went through in Atlantic City, it takes a little while to get their psyche back and their confidence back," he said. "But we came back and had a good practice on Monday and I thought our guys came back focused and ready to go" Tuesday.
"It's always easy to learn from wins," Kellogg added. "When you have to learn from losses and build the kids back up, that's what coaching is about."
Like the Minutemen (2-4), Quinnipiac also is coming off a disheartening loss, but one at the opposite end of the spectrum.
On Monday, the Bobcats erased a 17-point deficit at Navy and held the Midshipmen without a field goal for over 10 minutes and appeared to be headed to overtime. But Chris Hall hit a half-court shot that beat the buzzer for Navy, sending Quinnipiac home with a crushing 65-62 loss that dropped them to 3-2 this season.
In their third season under coach Tom Moore, the Bobcats opened the season with a win over Hartford and after falling to Lehigh they won back-to-back games at Yale and Maine before Monday's loss.
Senior guard James Feldeine has led Quinnipiac in scoring this season, averaging 17.2 points to go with six rebounds per game.
He's joined in the backcourt by 6-foot point guard James Johnson, who is averaging 11.2 points and four assists per game.
All-Northeast Conference forward Justin Rutty figures to be an handful inside. The 6-foot-7, 240-pound forward is averaging 15.2 points and 8.4 rebounds.
NOTES - The game marks the second of potentially three games in three sports between the University of Massachusetts and Quinnipiac in nine days. The Bobcats beat the Minutemen 5-4 in overtime on Saturday in hockey, and the women's basketball teams could play in either the championship or consolation game of the Brown Bear Classic on Sunday.
Quinnipiac is the only school UMass plays in all three high-profile winter sports.

MHERST, Mass. - Behind a 19-point effort from Ricky Harris and a late first half run in which they took the lead the lead for good, the UMass Minutemen men's basketball team defeated Quinnipiac, 62-58, on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. Anthony Gurley added 15 points and Sampson Carter had 11, as the Minutemen used a 9-0 run late in the first half to take control of the game and held off a late second half rally by the Bobcats to secure the win. UMass improved to 3-4 on the season, while Quinnipiac went to 3-3.
UMass led by 12, its largest lead of the night, with 6:17 to go, but went without a field goal for the final 4:35 and scoreless for 3:13 of that span to allow Quinnipiac to cut the lead to as low as four, but free throws by David Gibbs and Gurley in the closing seconds kept the Minutemen in front by seven. QU's James Johnson hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer that made it a four-point victory for UMass.
The Minutemen shot 21-for-48 from the floor, while Quinnipiac was 23-for-66. The Bobcats dominated the glass 46-29, including a 28-11 edge in offensive rebounds.
Harris came out hot in the first half, hitting his first five shots and scoring 15 of the Minutemen's first 19 points, but the Bobcats used a 17-10 rebounding advantage over the first 16 minutes and 12 points from Feldeine in that time to lead for most of the half. Quinnipiac took the lead at the 15:30 mark and held onto it, with the lead reaching as much as seven, until two free throws by Matt Hill, the first of his career, gave UMass a 28-26 lead with 2:38 left in the half. That was part of a 9-0 UMass run, capped off by a Freddie Riley 3-pointer, in which the Minutemen held the Bobcats scoreless for over 4 minutes. The first half ended with UMass leading by six, 35-29.
The Minutemen shot 44 percent (11-for-25) in the first half, while the Bobcats shot 38.2 percent (13-for-34). Harris led the way for UMass with 15 points on 5-for-6 shooting. Quinnipiac had the edge on the boards in the half, 21-15, including 12 offensive boards for the visitors.
The Bobcats cut their deficit to two in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Minutemen responded with an 8-0 spurt on a pair of Gurley 3-pointers and a Harris drive to the hoop to take a 10-point lead, 46-36, and force a QU timeout with 13:49 to go.
The UMass lead hovered between 10 and 12 for the next 10 minutes, but it was held scoreless from the 4:35 and 22-second marks, giving the home team a five-point lead with 22 seconds remaining. Gurley sank two free throws with 5.9 seconds left, before Johnson hit the 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded, giving UMass a 62-58 victory.
The Minutemen return to action on Saturday when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross at the DCU Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Ricky Harris scored in double-figures for the 71st time in 105 career games with 19. It was his 68th time in the last 73 games with 10 or more. He reached double-figures in the first 10 minutes of the game and had 15 in the first 12 minutes.
Harris had his 31st career game and third this season with more than 20 points.
Harris, who stands 10th in career scoring at UMass, now has 1,472 in his career. Next on the list is Mike Pyatt (1,503). Harris also increased his career numbers on the made 3-pointers list (227) and attempts (623). He is fourth on both career charts.
Anthony Gurley continued to score in double-figures in each game this season with 15. He now has 33 career games with 10 or more points. He has at least 13 in each game this season.
Sampson Carter reached double-figures for the second time in his career with 13. He also had 13 vs. St. Francis (N.Y.).
Matt Hill scored his first point of the season and made his first-career free throws with 2:38 left in the first half.
Hill scored a career-high with 4. His previous best was three points done twice.
David Gibbs made his first free throw attempt of the season with 22 seconds left in regulation.
Gurley drew a charge for an offensive foul in the last first half, his first of the season.
Quinnipiac had 28 offensive rebounds, the most against UMass since Hofstra grabbed 36 last season in a 97-81 Minuteman win on Dec. 20, 2008.
UMass and Quinnipiac played basketball for the first time. The teams will play in Hamden, Conn., next season.
Coach Derek Kellogg's opening remarks on the game against Quinnipiac:
I always enjoy Ws which is nice, but it was a pretty hard fought, well played game, I thought Quinnipiac had some really good offensive rebounding. They did a good job, I think Rutty is one of the better offensive rebounders I've seen for an undersized five man, and thank God Ricky and Anthony played well offensively, but that's what your juniors and seniors are supposed to do. That was a well played game, I think it was a good team, and we're still in the growing stages and in the growing process of getting better and continuing to compete. I thought our defense was a little better, but we need the last part of good defense, which is rebounding.
Kellogg on Ricky Harris:
I think Ricky's play is starting to etch in stone. Ricky's playing well and David's doing well at the high guard spot. And Ricky is dangerous with the ball out there, and now he doesn't have to work so hard to get open, and it's enabling me to play Anthony Gurley more minutes. Because those two are competing for minutes, and now some of the freshman minutes are less than they were in the first couple games.
Kellogg on improving the teams rebounding:
I think its going to take more effort to fix the rebounding margin. You have to get more guys going to the boards. You have to get your guards crashing the glass. I have to get the guys in the weight room and make sure their eating right and get them tougher and stronger.
Ricky Harris on the team's confidence:
We needed a win bad to get our confidence back up after losing to Michigan State the way we did. We started to get down on ourselves, but that was a good win, that was a good team we played, and I feel good about that win.
Harris on all around effort:
I would say everybody contributed in their own way, and that's what we need, for everybody to come out and play and contribute. We don't have as much talent as other teams, so we need all ten or twelve guys that play to come out and play like that every game.
Harris on switching to the point guard position:
At first I thought switching to point guard was just a half-time adjustment against Rutgers, I didn't know it was going to last like this, but the coaches talked to me about it and my teammates talked to me about it and gave me confidence in it, and I embrace it and appreciate it. I accept the challenge and I like the position.
Sampson Carter on playing with Ricky Harris:
I feel like Ricky is the best player on the team, so when I come out I just want to get some points. I feel like Ricky has more confidence, I feel very confident when he has the ball, I know that he's going to score.
Harris on the win against Quinnipiac:
Like coach always preaches, they out toughed us, they beat us on the glass pretty badly, but a wins a win, and we'll take any kind we can get. They got a lot of easy shots, they got a lot of layups that didn't go down, a lot of floaters that didn't go down, and the big kid Justin Rutty, he had a lot of hook shots that didn't go down, and this let us get a win.
Quinnipiac Head Coach Tom Moore on his team's play:
I was happy with a lot of things tonight, other than the score. Coming off the way we played Monday night down at Navy, I thought it was our most uneven performance of the year. I thought tonight we played with a lot of heart, a lot of courage and a lot of focus throughout the game. We got a little tired at the end of the first half and we lost our heads our heads a little bit. But other than that for 40 minutes with played with a lot of courage and toughness, and for 38 minutes we played really smart defensively and offensively. So I'm proud of my guy's effort, that is a tough team to beat. They have great size and athleticism, and obviously Gurley and Harris are just really tough scorers they fit the system very well. They are hard to keep out of the lane, very physical, and good with the ball.
Coach Moore on UMass Head Coach Derek Kellogg and the Minutemen:
I think Derek is doing a great job here. When you take a look at how many first year kids he has in his top 7 or 8 it is staggering. They're recruiting like crazy and their system is terrific. They are going to be a monster in the Atlantic 10, I don't know when; I could be January, February or sometime next year. He is doing a terrific job. He uses his personnel and talent very, very well.
MHERST - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team survived a late Quinnipiac rally and a beating on the boards the whole game to get a much-needed victory at the Mullins Center Wednesday night.
After two straight losses, the 62-58 win gave the Minutemen a lift.
"We needed that one bad, just to get our confidence back up," senior guard Ricky Harris said. "After losing to Michigan State the way we did (106-68), a couple guys got down on themselves."
Wednesday night "was a good win," he added. "That was a good team we played. I feel good about that win."
The Bobcats (3-3) might have pulled out the victory if not for their struggle to make shots near the basket.
Justin Rutty, who entered the game shooting 60.8 percent from the field, was 2-for-13, all from close range. He missed his first eight shots, negating his nine offensive rebounds (13 total).
Of the 43 shots missed by Quinnipiac, 27 were in the paint, including 13 layups. The Bobcats outrebounded UMass 46-29, and they had almost as many offensive rebounds (28) as the Minutemen's total boards.
"If anyone had told me that we would have 28 offensive rebounds against their length and athleticism, I don't think I would have thought that was possible," Quinnipiac coach Tom Moore said. "One of the reasons we struggled to finish inside was their size and athleticism."
Rebounding was a black mark on a game that UMass coach Derek Kellogg otherwise said he was pleased with.
"I think it's effort and we have to get more guys crashing to the boards," Kellogg said. "Defense is on my mind. Rebounding is on my mind and toughness is on my mind. We have to continue to get better at that."
Despite their shooting woes, the Bobcats controlled the game early by opening an 18-11 lead and led for most of the first half. Four straight free throws - two each by Anthony Gurley and Sampson Carter - started a 9-0 run that put the Minutemen ahead 31-26, and they held a lead the rest of the way.
UMass led 35-29 at halftime and stretched its edge to 12 on a basket by Sean Carter with 6 minutes, 18 seconds left. Quinnipiac took advantage of some sloppy play by the Minutemen down the stretch to cut the lead to four but never got closer.
Harris had his best balance of scoring and passing since he began playing point guard in the second half against Rutgers on Friday.
He scored the first seven points for UMass and 15 of its first 19. Harris finished with 19 points, six assists and three turnovers.
"At first I thought it was just a halftime adjustment we made against Rutgers. I didn't know it was going to become like this," Harris said. "I accept the challenge. I like the position."
Kellogg said he was pleased with Harris' progress at the position.
"Ricky is playing well at the point," Kellogg said. "Ricky is dangerous with the ball and now he doesn't have to work as hard to get open."
Gurley added 15 points and six rebounds, while Sampson Carter added 11 points.
James Feldeine had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Bobcats.
UMass (3-4) will play Holy Cross at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the DCU Center in Worcester.

MHERST - The last time Matt Hill even attempted a free throw in a game was during the 2005-06 season when he was a senior at Cheshire Academy in Connecticut.
One Achilles heel injury kept him out of his postgraduate season at the Tilton School in New Hampshire, and the aftereffects of his rehabilitation limited him to just eight minutes as a freshman at the University of Massachusetts.
Then an injury to his other Achilles cost Hill all but three games of last season, and in those three contests he never shot a free throw.
But late in the first half of the Minutemen's 62-58 win over Quinnipiac on Wednesday night, Hill was in the game. Starting center Sean Carter was in the locker room getting his right cheek stitched and backup center Hashim "Big City" Bailey was unavailable with a groin injury, so UMass coach Derek Kellogg called on Hill.
With 2 minutes, 38 seconds remaining before halftime, Hill was fouled away from the basket and went to the line for a one-and-one. With no rust from three seasons away, he swished both. The points actually put the Minutemen ahead for good.
Just over two minutes later, Hill finished an alley-oop pass from Sampson Carter to give him a career-high four points. With two surgically repaired ankles, Hill wasn't sure he could even catch the pass and finished the play with more of a lay-up than a dunk.
"I was testing myself to see if I could get up there," Hill said.
Hill added two rebounds in nine minutes and played sparingly in the second half, as Sean Carter returned.
But the 6-foot-7 sophomore was glad to contribute.
"It was fun to be out there and nice to help the team," Hill said. "I had to step in and hold it down at least until Sean came back."
Kellogg said he was pleased with Hill's effort.
"He probably played with more toughness than a lot of people. He was in their banging people, being physical," Kellogg said. "He can give us some minutes at the big-guy spot.
"He's got pretty good hands," Kellogg added. "If we can get his lift better and his moves around the basket better, maybe he can give us some quality minutes."
BAILEY QUESTIONABLE FOR SATURDAY - Bailey aggravated his groin injury in the loss to Michigan State on Saturday and could miss this Saturday's game in Worcester.
"I probably played him way too much over the weekend. I'm not sure if he'll practice or even play Saturday," Kellogg said. "I'd rather him sit and get better."
NEXT UP - The Minutemen play Holy Cross at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the DCU Center. The Crusaders, who beat Brown 85-79 in overtime Wednesday, are 2-6, but have won their last two under new coach Sean Kearney.
MISCELLANEOUS - Kellogg abandoned the big starting lineup that he used against Michigan State. He started Ricky Harris, Anthony Gurley, Terrell Vinson, David Gibbs and Sean Carter.
The parents of Quinnipiac coach Tom Moore, a Worcester native, were in the crowd of 2,502.

icky Harris scored 15 of the Massachusetts basketball teams first 19 points, and the Minutemen held off a late rally by Quinnipiac for a 62-58 victory on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
We needed that win bad, just to get our confidence back up because after losing to Michigan State the way we did, a couple of guys started to get down on themselves, but that was a good win, Harris said.
Harris, who finished with 19 points and six assists, started 5-of-5 from the field, and 3-of-3 from 3-point range, while his UMass teammates struggled to find their shots.
Hes the best scorer on our team, freshman Sampson Carter said. I feel way confident with him with the ball, [and] I know that hes going to score.
The Minutemen (3-4) started 4-of-11 from the field, shooting 36 percent, as the Bobcats took an 18-11 lead within the first nine minutes of play. After a quick rest, Harris returned to the floor to ignite a 17-8 run, as UMass took its first lead of the game, 28-26, with 2:38 to go in the first half. Harris scored 15 points in the first half, as the Minutemen held a 35-29 lead at the break.
James Feldeine, Quinnipiacs leading scorer, scored 10 of his teams first 24 points, finishing with 20 points and eight rebounds. Justin Rutty, the Bobcats second-leading scorer, came into the game shooting 61 percent on the season, but struggled to find the basket, finishing 5-of-15 shooting, and going the entire first half without a field goal. Bobcats coach Tom Moore attributed Ruttys struggles to the amount of size seen in the Minutemen forwards.
Coming into the game, we didnt face anything close to the size and athleticism at the four and five position, Moore said. [Rutty] just looked a little off balance when he was finishing, and I think he was surprised a few times at their length.
The Bobcats did not come out in the second half with the same success they had in the beginning of the game, going 4-of-14 and shooting just 29 percent. UMass built a 46-36 advantage at the 13:29 mark, a lead it did not relinquish for the rest of the game.
Quinnipiac (3-3) capitalized on a few Minutemen turnovers late in the game to get within four points with 33 seconds left in the game. However, UMass was able to make its free throws to secure the win. James Johnson hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to draw the Bobcats within four.
Junior Anthony Gurley continued his success as a starter for UMass, as he scored 15 points, including 11 in the second half, and added six rebounds to give Harris some relief. He also hit two big free throws with 5.9 seconds remaining to give UMass a better cushion. Gurley leads the team with an average of 18.2 points per game on 53 percent shooting.
Thats what your juniors and seniors are supposed to do, take the game over and make plays, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said.
The Minutemen relied on clutch 3-point shooting as well as steady free throw shooting to sustain their lead, but allowed 28 offensive rebounds to the Bobcats, who outrebounded the Minutemen 46-29 in the game. UMass did not miss a free throw until the 9:44 mark in the second half, going a perfect 8-for-8 at the line.
Quinnipiac shot 35 percent for the game while going 3-of-13 behind the 3-point line, and shot 53 percent from the free throw line.
The Minutemen will travel to Holy Cross for their next game on Saturday.

icky Harris recent move to point guard is looking more and more permanent, after Harris scored 15 of the Massachusetts mens basketball teams first 19 points, and finished with 19 points and six assists.
What started as a mid-game adjustment against Rutgers looks to be a permanent change for UMass (3-4), as Harris develops in his new role.
Its etching its way, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said when asked whether or not Harris performance made his status at the point written in stone.
Ricky is dangerous with the ball, he added. Now he doesnt have to work so hard to get open. And really what its enabling me to do is play Anthony Gurley more minutes, because those two were kind of competing for minutes.
With just over four minutes left in the first half, Quinnipiac (3-3) had outshot, outrebounded and outplayed the Minutemen, except for Harris, who carried the offense for most of the first half. After his fast scoring start, though, Harris helped drive a successful offense that pulled out from its slow start.
Chipping in
Harris kept the Minutemen in the game for most of the first half, but it was not until the rest of the team busted out of its slump to take the lead. For the remainder of the first and the entire second half, UMass attacked from all fronts, as Harris scored just four points for the rest of the game.
I think everyone contributed in their own little way, Harris said. And thats what we need, for everyone to play and contribute. Its a full team effort, and were not that deep of a team. We dont have as much talent as other teams, so were going to need all 12 guys, all 10 guys to come out and play like they did tonight.
Gurley had 15 points and Sampson Carter had 11 behind Harris at the point. But when Harris left the game, Sampson Carter, Matt Hill and Freddie Riley came off the bench and put the Minutemen ahead for good.
Carter, who added, two blocks, three boards and a steal, hit a key 3-pointer that jump-started the UMass offense en route to a 35-31 halftime lead.
Hill, who was in the game with Sean Carter out of the game after getting struck in the face, made a key steal and scored four vital points, including the go ahead free throw with four minutes left in the first, in his nine minutes in the game.
Outrebounded, not outplayed
Gurley had a team high with just five rebounds, as the Minutemen struggled to establish themselves on the boards against the Bobcats, who outrebounded UMass 46-29.
Justin Rutty had a game-high 13 rebounds while James Feldeine had eight, and Jonathan Cruz had six for the Bobcats in a dominant effort on the boards.
I think its effort, Kellogg said. Definitely effort is a thing. You have to get more guys going to the boards. You have to get your guards crashing the glass. Ive got to continue to get our guys in the weight room and make sure theyre eating right and just get them tougher and stronger.
As the game went on, the Bobcats kept rebounding, but failed to convert the boards into points, even with the deluge offensive rebounds. Rutty, who grabbed nine of those offensive boards, was ice cold inside, going 2-for-13 from the field with most shots coming in the paint as part of a rough shooting night for Quinnipiac. The Minutemen outshot the Bobcats 43.8 percent to 34.8 percent on the night.
