EWARK, N.J. - Undefeated Seton Hall handed UMass a 86-68 loss at the Prudential Center on Monday night. Seton Hall's dynamic combination of Herb Pope (22) and Jeremy Hazell (21) combined for 43 points as the Pirates moved to 7-0 overall. The Hall shot 53 percent from the floor in the first half in building an insurmountable 44-19 advantage. Pope added 15 rebounds. UMass (4-5 overall) was led by Ricky Harris (15) and Anthony Gurley (15). Both players have scored in double-figures in every game this season.
Harris moved to ninth in career scoring, passing Mike Pyatt (1,503) as he now has 1,506.
The Minutemen shot just 29 from the floor in the game after 19.4 percent in the first half. UMass missed its first 14 shots from 3-point range in the game. Gurley ended the drought with 14:27 left in the second game as he drained a trey to make it 57-28 in favor of the Pirates.
Seton Hall's largest lead of the game was 35 points at 64-29 with 11:31 left in the second half on a pair of Robert Mitchell free throws. UMass had a run of making 7-of-9 3-pointers in the second half to cut the deficit to 24 on several occasions.
UMass outscored Seton Hall, 49-42 in the second half. Terrell Vinson scored nine of his 12 in the final 20 minutes.
The Pirates led 44-19 at halftime as Pope (16) and Hazell (15) combined for 31 points. Seton Hall shot 53 percent from the floor in the first half, while UMass made just 19.4 percent of its shots (7-of-36). The Minutemen missed on all 12 of their 3-point attempts.
The Pirates took a 22-point lead at 39-17 on a jumper by Hazell with 2:48 left in the first. That expanded to 25 points on Hazell's second 3-pointer of the half with 51 seconds left, making it 44-19.
Seton Hall methodically built a lead of 16 midway through the first half. Jordan Theodore scored five points in a row to give the Pirates a 28-12 lead with 7:47 left in the first half. Seton Hall used a 13-2 run to take expand a 15-10 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half.
The Minutemen are off until Friday, when they host Grambling State at the Mullins Center at 8 p.m., following the women's game against Providence at 6 p.m.
Ricky Harris scored in double-figures with 15 points. He has tallied 10 or more in 20 games in a row, 70 of his last 75 games and 73 in his 107 career contests.
Harris moved to ninth in career scoring with 15. He passed Mike Pyatt (1,503) as he now has 1,506.
Anthony Gurley has also scored in double-figures in every game this season, netting 15 vs. Seton Hall. Gurley has 10 games in a row with 10 or more dating to last season and 35 overall in college.
Terrell Vinson scored in double-figures for fourth time this season with 12.
UMass missed its first 14 3-point field goals of the game. Then the Minutemen made seven of their next nine treys.
EWARK, N.J. - Bad things continued to happen to the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team when it crosses the George Washington bridge.
The Minutemen could not handle Seton Hall's full-court pressure and the score got ugly fast as the Pirates blitzed UMass 86-68 Monday night at the Prudential Center.
The Minutemen are now 4-5 and three of those losses this season have come in New Jersey, including the two most lopsided - Monday and the 106-68 loss to Michigan State on Nov. 28.
The game was not as close as the final score made it appear because UMass made up some ground once it was out of reach. The lead for Seton Hall (7-0) peaked at 64-29 midway through the second half.
"I thought Seton Hall played a good game tonight," Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said. "They played with a little more fire and a little more energy than my team, They're a good basketball team and I don't think we were ready for what they brought at us tonight."
A year ago against defensive pressure, UMass could give the ball to Chris Lowe and the speedy left-hander could usually get the ball across half court on his own.
But with Lowe graduated, the point-guard woes for the Minutemen were on full display Monday. UMass had nine turnovers, including several in the backcourt, and just one assist in the first half. The Minutemen finished with 16 turnovers.
On top of that, UMass did not shoot the ball well either in the first half. The Minutemen missed 29-of-36 shots from the floor including all 12 from 3-point range.
"It's rough for us when we're not making shots," said sophomore big man Sean Carter. "They sped us up and we turned the ball over. They got a lot of run outs. When you give a Big East team a lot of run outs, you're in for a long night."
The Pirates' lead reached 10 just before the midway point of the first half and 25 on a 3-pointer by Jeremy Hazell with 51 seconds left before halftime as Seton Hall coasted to a 44-19 advantage.
The Minutemen's total was the fewest points in a half since they scored 16 against Saint Joseph's on Jan. 23, 2008.
UMass could not guard Herb Pope inside or outside as the transfer from New Mexico State had 22 points and 15 rebounds.
"He dominated the game," Kellogg said. "He gives them extra opportunities when they take tough shots and miss."
Hazell, a junior guard, added 21 points, including a free throw with 15:47 left in game that put the Pirates up by 30.
Ricky Harris and Anthony Gurley, each with 15 points, continued to lead the Minutemen in scoring, while Terrell Vinson added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Late in the game with a win out of reach, Kellogg experimented with lineups by using four freshmen - Vinson, Freddie Riley, Javorn Farrell (eight points, four rebounds) and Sampson Carter - with junior point guard Gary Correia. The group helped cut into the Pirate lead.
"The one good thing was that I was able to play my freshmen some quality minutes," Kellogg said. "I thought they did some good things at the end, but the game was over at that point. I just want to get them as many minutes as I can do they can progress and get better."
UMass hosts Grambling at 8 p.m. Friday at the Mullins Center. "I want us to come back like we did after Michigan State when we got two good wins and not lose our focus and our goals," Harris said.

EWARK, N.J. - After a while Monday night, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team stopped even trying to go inside as it proved fruitless throughout the loss to Seton Hall.
Among the Minutemen's many issues in the 86-68 defeat were that their true inside players - Sean Carter, Hashim "Big City" Bailey and Matt Hill - were all held scoreless.
Freshman Terrell Vinson, who is more of a combo forward, had 12 points, but six came on 3-pointers.
"It hurts because they stayed attached to a couple guys (Ricky Harris and Anthony Gurley) on our team tonight. When we did get the ball inside our team didn't finish," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "It's a little bit demoralizing when you get the ball two feet from the bucket and the ball doesn't go in."
The defense had a lot to do with the Minutemen's struggles because the Pirate blocked 10 shots. Center John Garcia had four blocks.
Seton Hall rotated five players 6-foot-7 or taller through its lineup, wearing down the Minutemen's thin frontcourt.
"It hurt us a lot. We're not that deep inside," Harris said. "They were good inside and our guys wore down."
Bailey agreed.
"It was real tough. We were real small in there," Bailey said.. "They had a lot of guys 6-foot-8 or above."
HARRIS MILESTONES - Harris became the 10th player at UMass to pass 1,500 points in his career. His 15 points gave him 1,506 in his career, passing Mike Pyatt (1,503) to move into No. 9 on the all-time list. Next up is Harper Williams, who scored 1,534 from 1989-1993.
TECHS - Kellogg was whistled for his first technical foul of the season less than a minute into the second half. Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez was called for one in the first half and Jeremy Hazell of the Pirates got one for trash-talking to Gurley after a dunk with 14 minutes, one second remaining.
UNDERSIZED CITY - There are many times when Bailey guards a bigger opponent. But in the first half, the 6-foot, 275-pound Bailey found himself paired off against Melvyn Oliver who is listed a 6-foot-10, 340 pounds, which makes him heavier than former Minuteman Jeff "Big Deli" Salovski.
At one point midway through the first half, Bailey tried to back in on Oliver and bounced off him.
Oddly enough, Gary Correia, the shortest regular for UMass at 6-foot-1, blocked a shot by Oliver in the second half but was called for the foul on the play.
RUNNING TIME - Late in the first half, 21 seconds ran off the game clock during free throws and nobody noticed.
NEXT UP - The Minutemen return home to host Grambling at 8 p.m. Friday at the Mullins Center.
The Tigers are 1-4 with their lone win coming against Paul Quinn, a non-Division I opponent.
MISCELLANEOUS - Monday's game was the first half of a home-and-home series between the two schools. Seton Hall will visit UMass next year.
Freshmen Terrell Vinson and Javorn Farrell both fouled out.
Freshman Raphiael Putney, who is expected to redshirt this season, did not make the trip to New Jersey, staying behind to catch up on academics.

fter putting together its best performance so far this season on Saturday, the Massachusetts basketball team fell way short against Seton Hall on the road Monday night, 86-68, snapping its two-game winning streak.
The Minutemen cut a 35-point deficit to 18 after an abysmal first half in which they shot 19.4 percent from the floor, but could not stop the Pirates on defense, who recieved strong performances from a number of different players.
Senior guard Ricky Harris and redshirt junior Anthony Gurley both had 15 points for the Minutemen (4-5), but the Crusaders (7-0) remained undefeated behind impressive play by guard Jeremy Hazell and forward Herb Pope. Pope led all scorers with 22 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, going 9-of-15 from the field, while Hazell went 8-of-14 from the field and made five steals.
Gurley had five turnovers, while forward Terrell Vinson had four against the Hall who had a 44-19 lead going into the half.
Along with Harris and Gurley, the freshman class showed promise on the offensive side of the ball, with Vinson and Javorn Farrell adding 12 points and eight points, while guard Freddie Riley and forward Sampson Carter both added seven off the bench.
Vinson led the team in rebounds with seven, while Hashim Bailey and Sean Carter each had six rebounds. Vinson scored nine of his total in the final 20 minutes of the game, with the contest way out of reach for UMass.
The Minutemen were 9-of-29 from 3-point range, and missed their first 14 shots from beyond the arc, while not making one three-pointer in the first half, compared to the Pirates who were 4-of-15 from deep. UMass struggled from the field, shooting just .293, after converting 15-of-21 free throw attempts.
The Pirates started off strong, building a 16-point lead midway through the first half, when Jordan Theodore scored five straight points to give the Hall a 16 point lead with under eight minutes to go, going on a 13-2 run after only being up by five points with 11 minutes to play. They then took a 25-point lead with a jumper and Hazells second three-pointer of the half with under a minute to go in the frame.
UMass came out strong in the second half, especially from beyond 3-point range, converting 7-of-9 three-pointers to cut the deficit to 24 on several occasions while outscoring Seton Hall 49-42 in the second half. The Pirates offense, however, was too potent, as they took their largest lead of the game (35) with just over eleven and a half minutes to play in the second half.
The Minutemen are back in action when they host Grambling on Friday at 8 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
Notes: Harris passed Mike Pyatt to move to ninth in career scoring with 1,506 career points as a member of the Minutemen. Gurley has scored in double figures in every game this season, while Vinson scored in double figures for the fourth time this season.

pproximately 20 minutes after his team thoroughly dispatched Massachusetts, Seton Hall point guard Jordan Theodore sat in the Pirates locker room and made a curious remark. One that seemed especially out of place on this night when everything fit perfectly in place for the Pirates.
This was a must-win for us coming into tonight, Theodore said.
A must win? On Dec. 7? Against UMass? According to this team, yes.
Seton Hall had beaten up its last three opponents before Monday nights 86-68 victory over the Minutemen, but had gained nothing but three wins and a lot of empty feelings. Thats why Monday's game was so important to the Pirates.
Even a UMass team that is 4-5 with wins over teams such as Arkansas-Fort Smith and St. Francis (N.Y.) symbolized legitimacy to Seton Hall.
Our nonconference schedule hasnt been that good except for Cornell, Theodore said. So after we beat Cornell, people would look at us. But then we played NJIT and we played Hartford. Now we got to come out here and play a team from the Atlantic 10; it was good for us to get this win.
A good win? On Dec. 7? Against UMass? Absolutely, according to the Pirates.
To them, this game wasnt just their fourth straight win by 18 or more points to give Seton Hall its best start since the 1988-89 season, when the Pirates made it to the NCAA Tournament championship game. That Final Four team opened 7-0 with Utah, Kentucky, Kansas and St. Johns among its victims. The average RPI of the first seven teams this season? 246.
But a convincing win against an opponent from a solid conference despite the poor quality of the Minutemens record was something this team felt it needed.
I would say (they need to be) convincing, Theodore said of winning nonconference games. Because the NCAA looks at that. They look at how much you beat a team by, you know? We give credit to (UMass) because theyre a good team. We were just the better team tonight.
It helped that Seton Hall had another off-the-charts performance from Herb Pope who had a double-double in the first half as well as 21 points from Jeremy Hazell. Pope finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds when he wasnt even sure if he would play earlier in the day.
Pope was sick Sunday night and early Monday and needed fluids and IVs before the game to get back into playing condition.
With the forward hitting long-range jumpers in addition to banging around in the low post, the Pirates had exactly what they wanted for their must-win game.
To be honest with you and this might sound a little scary but he can do more, Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez said. I think eventually hell become a better free-throw shooter. I think hell be more consistent with handling the ball, in terms of turnovers. I think he plays his best basketball when he plays against big-time competition. I think when he gets challenged and he gets against the real big-timers I think hell step it up.
Which makes one wonder that Seton Hall really did believe it needed to win Monday night's game for legitimacy purposes.
The Pirates began the game as if they were shot out of a cannon and by halftime UMass was on the wrong end of a 44-19 deficit. Seton Halls defense held the Minutemen to 19.4 percent first-half shooting. Until the last five minutes of the game, when UMass connected on a couple of 3-pointers, Seton Hall continued to pour it on.
With its non-conference credibility being questioned, the Pirates took their aggression out on UMass, hoping to change that sentiment.
It was a must-win because theyre saying that weve been playing teams that werent that good, Hazell said. It was a must-win to show people that we are legit.

tar-Ledger college basketball writer Brendan Prunty has all of the answers about Seton Hall's 86-68 win Monday night, including why this game was not a must win for the Pirates:
1. After the game, players called the UMass game a "must win." Was it?
This is not to put a damper on what was arguably the Pirates' most complete all-around game of the season, but if beating UMass was a must win, than this team is in trouble. Jordan Theodore and Jeremy Hazell both told me after the game that they felt they needed to win this game to legitimize themselves and tone down some heat about their non-conference schedule. Seton Hall shouldn't be placing the "must win" moniker on a UMass team whose best win was against a 2-7 Holy Cross team. This should be a "just win" game for the Pirates who can't afford to slip up in their non-conference slate. There's just no need to put any un-needed pressure on a game that was never at any point in doubt. Place the "must win" banner on West Virginia on Dec. 26 or Syracuse on Dec. 29, not against a 4-5 UMass team.
2. Heard that Herb Pope was once again a beast, correct?
Well, let's see: it was a day ending in "-day," so yeah, Herb Pope had another great game. The transfer forward had a double-double against the Minutemen in the first half. Pope had 16 points and 10 rebounds at halftime and was causing all kinds of problems for UMass. What was most outstanding about Pope's night was his jump-shooting. We know how good he can be in the low-post, banging around with the big bodies for rebounds and baskets. But to see how effective Pope was stepping away from the basket he hit two 3-pointers Monday night has to get Seton Hall all kinds of giddy. It was clear that UMass mis-scouted him, typecasting Pope as strictly an inside guy. They paid big-time for that.
3. You said this was the most complete game Seton Hall has played this season. Why?
It just looked like every facet of the Pirates' game was clicking on all cylinders: offense, defense, transition, shooting, everything. Seton Hall's defense was terrific against UMass Monday night the best it's been all season long. Theodore had a blocked shot, so did Pope, Eugene Harvey had four steals. Heck, even Jeremy Hazell who isn't known for his defense usually made a couple of heads-up plays on defense and had five steals for the game. The Pirates shot just under 45 percent for the game and were over 50 percent for the first half. The only thing that I didn't like was that the Pirates let it slip away in the last four minutes of the game. But other than that this was the total package for Seton Hall: Cornell may have been their best win, but this was their most complete.
GAME BALLS
Herb Pope (22 pts., 15 reb., 2 blk.): It seems like he keeps getting more and more impressive with each game. Monday night was his fifth double-double in the last six games. Don't care who the opponents are, that's some serious work.
Jeremy Hazell (21 pts., 5 stl.): Like we said, his defense was the best part of his night. One observation: his aggressive play seemed to energize his offensive performance.
Jordan Theodore (12 pts., 3 reb., 5 ast.): This offense is just able to hit another gear when he's running the show. UMass just could not keep up with him when he was in the fast-break.
SUICIDES
Seton Hall late-game strategy: Noticed this at the end of the Monmouth and NJIT games Seton Hall refuses to kill the clock. No issue with beating a team by as much as possible, but when you're up by 20 points or more with less than 2:30 left, just dribble it off. Seton Hall didn't do that last night and it cost them points on the other end.
UMass 3-point shooting: Please guys, when the 3-pointers aren't falling just give it up. The Minutement were 0-for-12 from beyond the arc in the first half and then jacked up 17 more after the half.
Jeremy Hazell: Now I know what you're thinking, "But he just got a game ball, right?" Yes, but he got whistled for a technical foul in the second half, when he dunked on UMass guard Anthony Gurley and then taunted him right in from of the official. As an experienced player, he's got to be smarter than that.
NEWS, NOTES AND QUOTES
The News
Seton Hall's man-mountain, Melvyn Oliver returned to action Monday night after a three-game absence to focus on his academics. Oliver, who was removed from the team before the Long Island game on Nov. 28, scored three points and grabbed three rebounds in nine minutes of play.
Hazell's technical foul in the second half wasn't the only one called Monday night. Each coach got hit with one during the game for arguing calls. Seton Hall's Bobby Gonzalez got one early in the first half (his first of the season) and UMass' Derek Kellogg got one in the second half.
The Notes
How's this for differentiating styles? Seton Hall's next game Saturday against VMI should be a high-scoring affair. VMI surrenders an average of 98.7 points per game to its opponents. The game after that, the Pirates will have to reverse gears and go in the opposite direction against Temple on Dec. 19. The Owls are quite stingy, allowing 54.3 points per game. ... Herb Pope's double-double Monday was the sixth this season by the Pirates team. Pope has had four, while Eugene Harvey and Robert Mitchell have each had one. ... Over the past six games, the Pirates have had an average margin of victory of 25 points per game. ...Talk about capitalizing: UMass turned the ball over 16 times Monday night, which turned into 20 Seton Hall points. ... Further proof that you should never gamble on sports, because the men in Vegas know everything: The line for the Seton Hall-UMass game was 16. The Pirates won by 18 which was saved by an offensive foul call on UMass in its final possession of the game.
The Quotes
"I wanted to help Jamel Jackson out. Me and him are both the new guys, so I didn't want to let him down. It was pretty high. When I saw it on the jumbotron during the game, I said, 'Man, he threw that pretty high.' I had to be like Jeff Robinson."
-- POPE on throwing down the alley-oop from Jackson in the second half
"It was just a hustle play, you know? (Ricky) Harris, he got me in the first half. He pinned mine on the glass, so it was just a little payback."
-- THEODORE on his shot-block
"It allows me to gamble a lot. To get into the passing lanes, because when those two guys are defending like that and they're on people, I can get out and gamble for steals. It works great."
-- HAZELL on being able to do more defensively with Harvey and Theodore in simultaneously
"He dominated the game. He had 16 points and 10 rebounds at the break. He gives them extra opportunities when they take tough shots and miss. He also hit two 3s, which equals his total for the year.
-- DEREK KELLOGG on the matchup problems created by Herb Pope
"Jordan is a rocket. He's like a one-man fast break. When he and Eugene are in together or we can pressure the ball the way we were pressuring the ball and take their guards out of it, we're pretty tough."
-- GONZALEZ on the problems that playing two point guards create for the opposition
RIDICULOUS STAT OF THE GAME
19.4
That's the first-half shooting percentage that UMass had Monday night against the Pirates' defense. It was the best shooting percentage for a half that Seton Hall has allowed all season. In fact, the Pirates didn't even come close to holding an opponent to that low of a shooting percentage for a half all of last season.
