Appeal for Mike- re Hosting of this site

Post by jj » Fri Nov 18, 2016 10:20 am

Hi All,

I've hosted UMASSHoops.com on my servers for as long as I can remember. It was something I was glad to do as a fan and a friend of Mike. A lot of us go way back to the glory days.

Long story short, it's got to move. In another life, I was a bike racer and took my fair share of shitters. I've lived the last 6 years and change with a pretty potent bout of post-concussion syndrome and it's become pretty clear that my cognition is taking a major nosedive and continues to erode. I don't have the ability to stay on top of things like this anymore. Here's a couple of articles if you're interested, but the bottom line is that I'm toast, fading kind of quickly, and we've got to find a home for this place.

In the past, people have announced that they have servers/alternatives/etc and we could sure use some now if they really exist. I'd hate to see this site end up with ads or on some wacky platform.

JJ,
Really sorry to hear that. I read the first article and wish all the best to you with respect to your health. Thanks for hosting the site for all these years. The more we learn about concussions, the scarier it is. I'm happy to chip in if we need to pay to host the site moving forward.

Wish I knew more about tech and could help. Wishing you the best with your health.

I just sent another donation to the UMassHoops PayPal account. Good time to remind people to donate if they can.

Looking forward to the 2022 UMass Football Season (Oh boy, just jinxed that one)

Same here JJ, wish you the best and thanks for all your work.

At one point thought 247Sports was a possibility. Then Bob McGovern unloaded the Musket and saw the issues there.

A good number of teams have successfully used Collegiate Sports Nation site for a forum, but don't think it can cover the depth of 247sports. Mike started and owns this site, so whatever he decides, I'm good with. I'll put a link on the our csnbbs site and will be interesting if they have or will contact Mike.

PS When George Mason joined the A10, the CAAZone site fell apart. The csnbbs did a good job getting James Madison up with the wall boards of their school, very nicely.

Hey, thanks guys. I appreciate the kind words. Shitty deal, but I did it to myself.

re: the site, Mike ideally would like to keep the same platform (docuwiki and phpbb), so the hosting should support those. He's looking for a host that has decent firsthand reviews and decent tech support. The rest will take care of itself.

Thanks,

Jay

Wow what an eye opening article. i wish you the best and who knows miracles in brain recovery are out there in the future. Hang in there! Makes me think of Dante's face plant in the Temple game, I hope they are evaluating those types of injuries seriously now.

JJ - I hate to hear this, buddy. No doubt you're a tough bastard. Thank you for all of your efforts re UMass Hoops and stay strong.
Retarded artistically. Idiotic in other respects.

I know nothing that could help in terms tech support, but I would and I assume many others would to be willing to pay a membership price for a year say $20-30 to keep things the same. This is the best type of board setup that I deal with...almost nothing else is close. Not sure how many "memberships" would need to be "sold" to keep things the same or if it's even possible to do...throwing it out there.

JJ, wishing you all the best. We've never met, and I'm sure you've never gotten the thanks you deserve for what you've done for this site and through it UMass sports, but thank you....and best wishes. If there's anything UMasshoops nation can do to help ya out, I'm sure that we'd step up.

Sorry to hear about your troubles jj.

I can't offer any tech help but I do have a suggestion. Don't make this thread "sticky". I think most posters are like me - they've trained themselves to ignore the first few threads and just skip down to the latest thread with activity. I swear the sticky threads are always the least visited simply because they get overlooked.
This is the most enjoyable losing season ever!

Trainers are getting better, but we're still light years away from where we need to be.

Good stuff, Harbo. She was in pretty serious shape a while back. Actually had nerves in her head resected rather than live with the pain.
