mherst, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts sophomore guard Anthony Anderson (Lynn, Mass.) earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors for his efforts in UMass' season-opening victory over Arkansas-Little Rock, the league announced today.
The first Minuteman to win the award since Monty Mack earned the honor Jan. 3, 1998, Anderson tallied 10 points and four assists in UMass' 66-60 come-from-behind win over the Trojans, Nov. 16, at the Mullins Center. He scored eight points in the second half, including five in the final 5:04, as UMass erased a 10-point deficit in the game's last half to secure the win. In a 37-minute stint off the bench, Anderson had no turnovers, and in his two appearances this season (including the EA Sports All-Stars game) has yet to have a turnover.
UMass, shooting for its first 2-0 start since the 1995-96 team ran off 26-straight wins to open the season, returns to action against Marist, Saturday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center. Marist is 2-0 on the season prior to a Nov. 21 home game against South Alabama.
Saturday night's game against Marist has been designated as Family Night at the Mullins Center, where families can purchase four tickets, four hot dogs and four Cokes for $50.00. The University of Massachusetts sophomore point guard, who sat out last year as an academic non-qualifier, captured the Atlantic 10's Rookie of the Week honors after his first college game Friday.
Anderson helped lead the Minutemen to a 66-60 win over Arkansas Little Rock, scoring 10 points, including a clutch 3-pointer and two free throws late. He grabbed five rebounds and had four assists without committing a turnover.
Anderson is the first Minuteman to capture the honor since Jan. 1998 when Monty Mack was picked as the league's top rookie.
BRAND CONSIDERED: UMass junior Micah Brand was a candidate for player of the week, as he scored 23 points to tie his career high in the Minuteman win Friday, but the award went to reigning player of the year David West of Xavier.
In X's 72-41 win over Coastal Carolina, West scored 25 points, grabbed seven rebounds and broke a single-game Musketeer record with eight blocked shots.
RETURN TO HAWAII: The Maui Classic released its field for the 2002 event and UMass will make its third trip to Hawaii since 1995.
Also included in the Classic are Arizona State, Gonzaga, Indiana, Kentucky, Utah and Virginia.
