Power forward Tyrell Lynch (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) has been added to the 2008-09 UMass men's basketball roster after sitting out last year, but attending the school. He has four years of eligibility remaining.
Lynch, who starred at Niagara Falls High School in New York, originally signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Auburn University, but did not enroll at the school.
Lynch spent last season playing at the Laurinburg Institute in North Carolina where he averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds. In high school, Lynch was a leader on the Niagara Falls squad which won the 2005 New York State Class AA championship and played in the New York semifinals in 2006.
In 2005, the Wolverines went 28-1 on the way to the state title and a No. 1 national ranking according to several publications. USA Today ranked Niagara Falls No. 3 in its final poll of 2005. As a senior in 2006, Lynch was an All-New York State player averaging 18 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots per game.
In his three seasons at Niagara Falls, his teams compiled an overall win-loss record of 83-7 for a 92.2 winning percentage, and state tournament finishes of first (2004-05), second (2003-04) and third (2005-06).
He played his AAU basketball with the GC Ballers for coach Jeff Bishop.
