+After winning 20 games in [[season_2023-24|2023-24]], UM lost key contributors to the transfer portal, including [[Atlantic 10]] First Teamers [[Matt Cross]] and [[Josh Cohen]].  While Cross had a solid all-around game, [[frank_martin|Coach Martin]] hoped to improve defense at the center spot vacated by Cohen.
+UMass took centers [[Malek Abdelgowad]] and [[Shahid Muhammad]] out of the transfer portal.  Muhammad had set a school record in blocks the season before at Southern Idaho, and Martin had tried to get the 6'10" Abdelgowad in 2023 before he committed to Murray State.  While neither had Cohen's offensive skills, it was hoped that they could add a little more defensive resistance down low.  That didn't pan out.  Abdelgowad got 21 starts, but never seemed to earn Frank's full confidence, and only averaged 13.8 mpg.  Muhammad saw the floor even less, at 12.5 mpg, only averaged 3.5 points per game, mostly on putbacks, and averaged just 2.2 rpg.
+[[Rahsool Diggins]] stepped up to lead UM in scoring, at 16.8 ppg, but his shooting percentages regressed from the prior season.  In fact, UM as a team was often atrocious in the shooting stats.  UM finished dead last in the A10 in overall FG% (.410) and 3FG% (.281), and next to last in Offensive Rating.  Nationally, we were next-to-last in 3FG%, 358th (out of 364) in Effective FG% (.455), and in the bottom 30 in FT% (.664).
+Diggins' season was marked by his gritty performance in a [[game20250115_fordham|triple-overtime win at Fordham]], in which he set UM's new single-game scoring record, with 46 points.  He finished the season getting honored to the A10's Third Team.
+Sometimes forced into playing an unnatural center position, [[Daniel Hankins-Sanford]] was UM's leader in the frontcourt, averaging 9.8 points and a team-lead-tying 7.4 rebounds.  DHS lost some time with a hand injury, and was tentative in his initial comeback, but averaged 18.8 ppg over the last four of the regular season.

+[[Jayden Ndjigue]] started the season on the bench after starting all 31 for UM as a freshman, as Coach Martin tried to figure out the rotation.  Though still offensively challenged, Jayden's junkyard dog mentality got him back into the starting five in late November.  He finished as the team's 4th-leading rebounder with 4.7 rpg.
