**Late Defensive Stand Gives Men's Hoops 70-65 Win Over Richmond**\\

AMHERST, Mass. - A late 11-point run and a defensive stand allowing just two points in the final six minutes enabled the UMass men's basketball team to defeat Richmond 70-65 on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center. Three Minutemen scored in double figures led by 18 from Chaz Williams. Cady Lalanne added 12 points, while Sampson Carter had 10 points in the win.

The win improves UMass to 13-5 overall and 3-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond falls to 13-8 overall and 3-3 in league action. The Minutemen will next play at La Salle on Wednesday, Jan. 30 with tip-off set for 7 PM.

Richmond was led by 13 points from Wayne Sparrow, 12 points from Cedrick Lindsay and 10 points from Greg Robbins.

Though UMass led the entire way in the first half, Richmond used an early 8-to-2 run at the start of the second half to take its first lead of the game, 37-36, nearly three minutes into the stanza thanks to a pair of Lindsay free throws. After Lalanne hit a jumper to tie the game at 40-40, Richmond used another 8-to-2 run to go up 48-42 capped by another pair of free throws from Lindsay.

Two free throws from Maxie Esho (4 points, 9 rebounds) followed by a highlight alley-oop from Williams to Raphiael Putney that pulled UMass within three. Cady Lalanne tied the game 54-54 on a three-point play with 8:50 left in the game after being fouled going strong to the basket in the lane.

The Spiders extended the lead back to seven on two Alonzo Nelson-Ododa free throws, but a Williams three-pointer ignited a 7-to-0 UMass run that tied the game at 63 each with 4:09 to go.

Neither team could score for almost two minutes until Sampson Carter broke the deadlock with a pair of free throws. Carter came up big on the ensuing Richmond possession as he hauled down a rebound off an errant three-point shot with just over a minute to go.

Freddie Riley pushed the lead up to four, 67-63, with a baseline drive with 27 seconds left.

After a pair of Richmond free throws ended a nearly six minute scoreless streak, Williams hit three straight to give the final 70-65 score.

The first half saw a strong inside presence from the Minutemen as Sampson Carter and Terrell Vinson combined for 15 of the Minutemen's 34 points. Carter's eight points came within the first five minutes of play as UMass took an early 12-3 lead to start off the game. Vinson made his presence felt late with his seven points in the last seven minutes of the half.

After the fast start by UMass, Richmond battled back with an 8-to-2 run capped by a Wayne Sparrow three-pointer pulling the Spiders within three points, 14-11.

Sparrow struck again 10 minutes later with back-to-back three pointers to pull the Spiders within one, 28-27. A quick two free throws by Trey Davis and a three-pointer from Vinson extended the Minutemen's lead putting UMass up 34-29 at halftime.

The Minutemen shot 52.3 percent for the game connecting on 23-of-44 shots. The free throw line was big as well for UMass which converted 21-of-27 attempts.

Richmond hit just 36.4 percent for the game on 20-of-55 shooting. 

NOTES

  * With the win, UMass won its second-straight over Richmond. The Spiders hold an 8-6 all-time lead in the series. In Amherst, UMass has won four-of-six meetings.
  * UMass is now 7-2 in the Mullins Center this season and 22-3 dating back to the start of last season.
  * UMass shot a season-high 52.3 pct (23-for-44) - previous high was 50.8 against Providence in the second game of the year.
  * UMass out-rebounded Richmond 32-23, improving to 5-0 on the season when leading in that category.
  * The Minutemen recorded nine steals for the second-consecutive game and collected three as a result of its press, pushing its season total to 41.
  * UMass is 8-0 this season when holding opponents under 70 points and 9-1 when leading at the half. They are 8-1 when decided by 5 points or less.
  * UMass finished with 38 points in the paint, its second-consecutive game with 38 and second-highest this season (46 vs. Providence).
  * Chaz Williams finished with 18 points, his 17th game in double figures this season and 67th of his career.
  * Cady Lalanne had 12 points for his fifth double-figure game this season and fourth in five A-10 games. He is now averaging 12.2 points and 9.2 rebounds in A-10 play.
  * Maxie Esho grabbed nine rebounds, the tenth time this season he has collected at least five boards. His career-high of 10 was set at Siena (11/28) this season.
  * Raphiael Putney handed out a career-high five assists. His previous high was three, set three times including against George Washington last Saturday.
