Riley gets approval from A-10 to play, avoids suspension
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 2/5/2011
PHILADELPHIA - When University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg went to bed Thursday, he thought his team was going to be down a man for its game at Saint Joseph's.
Shortly after he woke up Friday, he got good news. Freddie Riley will be available for Saturday's 7 p.m. game after all. Riley elbowed a Saint Louis player in the face at the end of the Minutemen's loss Wednesday at Saint Louis. He was called for a flagrant foul and was ejected from the game.
The Minutemen believed that Riley would be suspended for a game, much the way Javorn Farrell was for throwing a punch in UMass' loss to George Washington last year. But because Riley used his elbow not his fist, he'll escape the one-game sentence.
According to NCAA Rule 4, Section 26: “A fight is a confrontation involving one or more players wherein (but not limited to) a fist, hand knee or leg is used to combatively strike the other individual.”
Atlantic 10 associate commissioner Ed Pasque sent UMass the following email Friday explaining the ruling.
“Jim Satalin, our coordinator of officials, has indicated that based on the way the officials called the play (flagrant, but not a closed fist and not a fight), that there is no suspension. That is where it stands at this point.”
Riley is averaging 8.5 points in 20.6 minutes per game.
“I'm pleased as much for him as anything,” Kellogg said. “He's a good kid. It'll be good for our team to have him playing tomorrow.”
Riley was repentant and relieved.
“I'm very excited,” Riley said. “I had already put the whole thing behind me I'm just glad and fortunate that things worked out in my favor after doing such a dumb thing in the game the other night.”
Kellogg expected his team to shake the frustration from Wednesday's loss.
“I'm confident they'll have a good attitude and play the right way,” Kellogg said.
Unless Riley finds his shooting stroke, which has been inconsistent all year, the game will feature the Atlantic 10's two worst 3-point shooting teams. Only UMass (28.4 percent) shoots worse from outside than the Hawks (30.4).
But Saint Joseph's has other problems. The Hawks (5-17, 0-8 Atlantic 10) have lost nine straight and 15 of their last 17.
Sophomore Carl Jones leads St. Joe's in scoring (18.0 points per game) and assists (3.2 per game). Langston Galloway is next with 10.8 points to go with his team-best 5.9 rebounds per game. Freshman forward C.J. Aiken leads the Atlantic 10 in blocked shots with 3.9 per game.
“Watching them on tape, they've improved to where they're a good team,” Kellogg said. “They've played everybody really tough and just haven't made those last couple plays to win a game. This is a team that's growing and getting better. Like any league game, it'll be tough.”
UMass (13-8, 5-3 A-10) has won three straight games against St. Joe's in three separate locations - the Mullins Center, Hagan Arena at St. Joe's and The Palestra in Philadelphia. Before last year's win over the Hawks in Philly, the Minutemen imitated Rocky Balboa and ran the up the steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. They plan to do it again this year.
GURLEY CLIMBING - Currently No. 23 on UMass' career scoring list with 1,198, Gurley needs 14 points to pass Anthony Anderson and Jim Town, who are tied at No. 21 with 1,211. Gurley is 10th on UMass' career 3-pointers list with 135. He needs one to match No. 9 Edgar Padilla and two to match Kellogg, who is eighth with 138.

Hawks Hold Off Late Minutemen Charge, 67-64
A late UMass comeback from 13 down was held off as St. Joe's got its first A-10 win.
From UMass Athletics, 2/5/2011
PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's freshman Langston Galloway converted all six of his 3-point field goals and finished with a career-high 25 points as the Hawks picked up their first conference win of the season with a 67-64 victory over UMass on Saturday night at Hagan Arena. UMass dropped its second game on the road this week and stands at 13-9, 5-4 in the A-10 heading into a week off. The Hawks are now 6-17 with their first A-10 win to stand 1-8.
Down five with 20 seconds left, Javorn Farrell made on free throw and missed the second, but Sean Carter grabbed his season-high 15th board of the game and found Anthony Gurley for a 3-pointer that cut the UMass deficit to one. After Idris Hilliard made two free throws with 12 seconds left, Matt Hill was fouled on a rebound with 3.1 seconds left. When the front end of his 1-and-1 missed, the Hawks secured the rebound as the clock ran out.
Galloway was unconscious midway through the second half as he nailed three treys during a 16-3 SJU run to give the Hawks a 50-37 advantage with 8:31 left in the second half. That run also included Charoy Bentley hitting a whirling over-the-head layup and converted the foul shot for the and-1 with 13:50 left in the half.
Down by 13 points with 8:44 left in the second half, UMass rallied to cut the deficit to just one at 53-52 on a barrage of Freddie Riley 3-pointers. Riley had three treys to bring UMass to within one with 4:10 left in regulation.
UMass senior and leading scorer Gurley was limited to a season-low 10 points.
The Hawks outscored UMass 13-5 to end the first half to take a 27-23 lead at intermission. Saint Joseph's worked the shot clock all half and finished the stanza with a pretty pick-and-roll lay-up by Todd O'Brien with nine seconds left. Sean Carter led UMass with six points and eight rebounds in the half.
The teams combined to shoot 34 percent in the first half: UMass 10-of-30 and SJU 10-of-29.
Saint Joseph's was playing without its leading scorer Carl Jones (18.0 ppg), who suffered a sprained right ankle in practice this week.
UMass will have a full week off before returning to action on Sunday, Feb. 13, as the Minutemen host George Washington at 4 p.m. That game is the Leaman Legacy Classic, where a portion of the ticket sales go to benefit the Leaman Legacy Fund. Call 1-866-UMASS-TIX for tickets.
NOTES
Minutemen fall at Saint Joseph's
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 2/7/2011
PHILADELPHIA - A late hot streak by Freddie Riley was not enough to rescue the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team from a damaging loss on the road Saturday night.
The sophomore guard shot the Minutemen back into the game with 14 points, all in the second half, but they could never draw even and fell 67-64 to Saint Joseph's before 3,742 fans at Hagan Arena.
A road trip that offered UMass an opportunity to gain some ground in the Atlantic 10 against two of the conference's struggling teams turned out to be a disaster for the Minutemen who also lost to Saint Louis on Wednesday.
Against the Hawks - a team that had not previously won a game yet in 2011 and was missing its leading scorer - UMass fell behind by 13 in the second half and could never dig all the way out of the hole.
“That's a bad one. Against a team with the worst record in the conference we came in expecting to win this game to get momentum coming back home,” said Javorn Farrell, who scored 10 points and added 10 rebounds and four assists for the Minutemen.
With 20 seconds left, UMass was down 65-61 after Farrell made a free throw. He missed the second, but Sean Carter grabbed the rebounds and got the ball to Anthony Gurley who buried a 3-pointer to bring the Minutemen within 65-64.
Idris Hilliard made two free throws for Saint Joseph's, and the Minutemen hurried the ball up the floor. Gary Correia, who had made a big 3-pointer earlier, got an open look at the potential tying shot, but it back-rimmed out. Matt Hill, who had just entered the game, was fouled on the rebound. But he missed the front end of a one-and-one with 3.1 seconds left. The Hawks grabbed the rebound and the clock ran out.
“We just didn't play hard enough in the first half,” Riley said. “By the time we started making a comeback it was too late.
“It's a frustrating loss because of where they are in the standings and we just lost another game to Saint Louis who we probably should have beaten,” he added. “That was two tough losses on the road. We just have to regroup.”
UMass (13-9, 5-4 Atlantic 10) heads home with a week to lick its wounds. The Minutemen will host George Washington at 4 p.m. Feb. 13.
Saint Joseph's “executed better than we did,” UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. “You can't miss 12 layups and expect to be successful.”
The Hawks' leading scorer Carl Jones missed the game with an ankle injury, but they got a big game from Langston Galloway (25 points, 6-for-6 on 3-pointers).
Saint Joseph's (6-17, 1-8 A-10) all but neutralized Anthony Gurley (10 points), and nobody picked up the Minutemen until Riley caught fire late.
“They made the game tough on Anthony and stayed connected to him the whole game,” Kellogg said. “He got a little frustrated and took some tough shots.”
Sean Carter had eight points and 15 rebounds for UMass.
The Hawks, who entered the game as the A-10's second worst 3-point shooting team (ahead of only UMass), hit eight of 1 from behind the arc.
The game was tight for the first 25 minutes as a 3-pointer by Raphiael Putney tied the score at 34 with 15 minutes, 14 seconds left. But Galloway made three 3-pointers in a 20-3 run by Saint Joseph's that put the Hawks in control of the game.
“We didn't take them seriously enough,” Riley said. “We aren't on the level as a basketball team to do things like that. We need to take every game seriously.”
A dismal weekend all-around for UMass sports
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 2/7/2011
PHILADELPHIA - When the final seconds ticked off the Hagan Arena clock, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's disappointing loss to Saint Joseph's was over. But it wasn't until a few minutes later that the misery was complete for the UMass athletic department and its fans.
The loss was just one piece of what likely will go down as one of the worst weekends in the athletic department's history amid what has been a tough year for the school.
It started Friday when former football coach Don Brown was hired to be the new defensive coordinator at Connecticut. Brown had been a popular coach among fans, many of whom rooted for his success in his endeavors beyond Amherst. But the Huskies are UMass' former chief rival. Seeing Brown in UConn blue won't sit right with many.
Later that night, the hockey team's rough weekend started with a 5-0 loss to No. 1 ranked Boston College, another school most Minuteman fans don't hold much affection for.
Things didn't get much better Saturday afternoon when the women's basketball team, which nearly upset a very good Duquesne team Wednesday, came up on the short end of a long score, falling 80-53 at home.
But Saturday night was particularly rough for UMass fans as, 300 miles apart, the men's basketball team and hockey teams were both suffering difficult defeats.
The struggling hockey team was certainly an underdog against No. 12 Merrimack. But its 11-2 drubbing, which concluded a few minutes after the basketball game did, was still a wider-than-expected margin.
In Philadelphia, Derek Kellogg's crew didn't find any offense until too late. His team lost its second straight game to a team well under .500.
BETTER VS. FULL STRENGTH - When Saint Joseph's officials announced before the game that leading scorer Carl Jones wasn't playing, it appeared that a game that already favored the Minutemen now had a decided advantage in its favor. But an opponent missing a key player hasn't helped UMass this season.
Boston College was missing Corey Raji, who was averaging 11.1 points per game, when it played UMass on Dec. 4, but the Eagles didn't miss him as they held off the Minutemen.
Seton Hall was without leading scorer Jeremy Hazell, but still dispatched UMass 104-79.
Injured Central Florida star Marcus Jordan didn't even check in to the Knights' 64-59 win over UMass until late in the second half.
Foul trouble limited Maine leading scorer Raheem Singleton to eight minutes and no points, but the Black Bears still upset the Minutemen 68-56 at the Mullins Center.
GURLEY STREAK SURVIVES - Anthony Gurley's consecutive games-scoring-in-double figures streak reach 23, but it barely survived. Gurley hit a 3-pointer in the final minute to bring his total to exactly 10.
